Bell of Lost Souls: 40K BATTLE REPORT: Tau vs Tyranids (Video)

  • metalloveman · 1 month ago
Those are the coolest fire warriors I have ever seen. Way cooler than the one from the video game. Screw killing a ton of marines and deamons, killing a genestealer brood in assault is where its at.
  • Mr. Blank · 1 month ago
im glad to see a battlereport with no space marines in it. everybody always likes a good xenos bash

    Again, Great BatRep!
BatReps are an invaluable for learning.

    Still the same request as the previous ones;

Army List posted (maybe in a pre-post then the follow-up BatRep)
Close-up of Armies (maybe static shots)
Shot of whole table after each turn

Such a short amount makes it difficult to do everything, plus play the actual game.

    Great job, again.
  • albertsevil · 1 month ago
Very good report but i'd still like to see a shot of the whole table after each round please. Is there anyway of having the army lists posted with the video too?

Both armies looked great, just starting tau myself and love that colour scheme (any chance of more pics of both forces?). Oh and nice board, beats the 4' by 4' boards i normally play on.

These video reports are great, keep up the good work

Nice to see you guys giving the xenos some love! It is much appreciated, and I hope it continues. That said, and I'm not trying to be rude, but I do suggest that you do some reading over at some of the army specific forums. I know that neither of these armies are regularly played by either of you, and I commend you for taking this leap, but you might glean some useful tricks and tactics for using them by reading around a bit. A lot of people have put a lot of thought into building and using these armies effectively and your reports would benefit from a bit more research I think.
Nonetheless, thanks again, and I hope this attention to the "other" half of the galaxy continues!

    G'day Gniknok,

What are those Xenos specific forums you hinted at?

Thank you, as a deposit ;)

Advanced tau tactica is a great site for all things Tau.
  • darkwynn · 1 month ago
would have been very different if I heard Bigred say he had without number gaunts and scuttle genestealers.

Pathfinders get Rail Rifles, not Railguns
Also those are commonly called "Sniperfexes" not "Dakkafexes". Devourers make them a "Dakkafex".

Regardless, thank you. I love these video reports.
  • Caboose · 1 month ago
I was going to comment on the fexes thing, but you beat me to it.

    2x Twin Devourers = Dakkafex

    Strangler + V.Cannon = Sniperfex (or Gunfexs)
  • LordSandwich · 1 month ago
I would be scared if Pathfinders had Railguns.
  • pigeon poop · 1 month ago
nice one like the way thes tau look can we get a close up from them

btw first just would like to say that
  • tdogp · 1 month ago
I second that. It would be awesome to see that army in detail.
  • Myu · 1 month ago
    Hooray for Tau!
  • Myu · 1 month ago
I like the thought of more xenos battle reports as well. Anything with Necrons or Tau would be good!

For marine armies, I'd be interested in seeing a battle report making use of landspeeder typhoons, or land speeders in general if that's not possible.

I'm planning a combine arms force, with a mini armoured spearhead, landspeeders and a few drop pods (just need the speeders). I've looked them over points wise and they look very promising, but I'm not sure how they run on the table top.

^ Two worst codexes out there in 5th edition.

"The battle of the shitties codexes!!! WHO WILL PREVAIL???"

    Money on tau.
  • Slackermagee · 1 month ago
I would put my money on Tau... but he set up just begging to get face-rolled by outflanking genestealers.
  • sodcactus · 1 month ago
What? Where did the Necrons deploy, totally missed that?
  • DarkLink · 1 month ago
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that everyone else will agree that Necrons and Daemonhunters are the two worst codecies in the game. Daemonhunters have been the bottom of the pile since they were first released, and Necrons got hit in the face with the nerf bat when 5th came out harder than any other army.
  • Myu · 1 month ago
Tau? The worst? Wow, if you hadn't told me, I wouldn't have known :P
  • tdogp · 1 month ago
That report was refreshing. It was like a last hurrah for the nids before the new codex, and it is always a pleasure to see the tau (espcially a static variety)
  • DoomedDiceThrower · 1 month ago
That battlereport was a lot of fun again, you're doing this great. The Tyranids scheme looked lovely. Can't think of any critique for the reporting style now. Keep this up, it's highly entertaining ;-)
  • Suneokun of Pathfinder · 1 month ago
Sometimes a combat of two 'optimised' forces just isn't as fun. That looked like a seriously challenging battle ... plus I love it how the fight over two objectives came down to some serious NERF fighting between the Drones/Rippers and Firewarriors/Zoanthrope. Very Amusing.

I run a Tyranid and Tau force alongside Guard, and they often give me the funiest games.

Just one mistake I spotted. Your pathfinder squad had three railrifles... I think the codex only allows 2.

    Great Batrep.
  • Random Guy · 1 month ago
Up to three pathfinders may replace their pulse carbine and markerlight for a rail rifle and target lock.
  • whitestar · 1 month ago
All tyranids flee towards synapse. They would not run off the table unless there's no synapse on the table.

    The Tau are the anti-nid
  • Chumbalaya · 1 month ago
    Good report.

Tau vs. 'Nids tends to be quite one-sided, I can see why you took a more casual Tau army. Maybe they'll be able to handle it when the new book comes out.
  • Bigred · 1 month ago
This was one of the most fun games I had had in a while. Its easy to really get hardcore with your regular week-in week-out army as you are always to hone its tactics and use.

Having Darkwynn and I have to take armies we don't usually play made us both have to "play on instinct" instead of relying on every little combo and nuance we know with our regular armies.

We also didn't have the models available to build super-tuned lists with these alternative armies, and that also makes players have to loosen up and play by the seats of thier pants... which is turns out provides for a really fun atmosphere and game.

I recommend all of you guys try it out one of these weeks.
  • Chumbalaya · 1 month ago
That does sound like a lot of fun. My brother and I have swapped armies before, it's not the same but a similar idea. Leads to a lot of new ideas popping up.
  • BuFFo · 1 month ago
Try it out one of these weeks?

    :)

All my games are fun games. No one in my area, who has any mentionable skill, even bothers with 'tuned' out armies.

I think your power gaming group just had a taste of fun... and doesn't it feel, um, fun?

We have no idea what you are talking about Buffo :D

    ROBOT HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Shrek · 1 month ago
Ya Tyranids usually eat up Tau quite easily. Good battle report. Just adding to others, tyranids run towards synapse. So those gaunts would have been running towards the hive tyrant.

Being a Tyranid player, I would have left the warriors in cover and had the lictor have a go at one of the tanks. You'll be back in Tyranid shape in no time.

Looks like the board favored Tau as well ;)
  • gunnargunnar · 1 month ago
    tau should not exist
  • tdogp · 1 month ago
    Why not?
  • steesefactor · 1 month ago
Please don't feed the troll. :)
  • tdogp · 1 month ago
But I wanted to set up my well worded rebuke;) oh well
  • DeathJester · 1 month ago
Brillant report guys, big gold star! These have been getting better each time, and the camera work is definately improving ;-)

I was wondering how the two carnifexes got killed in the first round of combat? I count 5 rail guns (3 BroadSides and 2 Hammer Heads). These i would think would kill one fex, but how did the other one die? Unlucky saves?
  • darkwynn · 1 month ago
Crisis suits jumped out and shot him with plasma in rapid fire range then jumped back out.
  • Slackermagee · 1 month ago
I'll let the critiques of the announcer go, I don't want to discourage you guys from doing this again!

For Darkwynn however... did you forget about the ability of genestealers to outflank/entry table edge of w/o# gaunts in spearhead missions while you were deploying?

For the Nid player: I played nids up until a while ago, I feel your pain. Would have been nice to have gotten both stealer groups on one side (one assaulting up top, the other assaulting the two tanks down low), but ce la vie.
  • darkwynn · 1 month ago
Lol Slackerr i didn't know he had the generstelers with scuttle until he rolled for reserves. Bigred pulled one of those . opps I forgot to tel you but these had scuttling :P
  • Slackermagee · 1 month ago
Ouch. I almost always ran stealers with scuttlers... they just never made it to the enemy without that.

Also, threats of side-attacks tended to herd the enemy into the center of the table, all nicely clustered together for the VCs and BS's (go go str 8 large blast with pinning).
  • darkwynn · 1 month ago
Ya , I would have used the stealth squad in the front then to use the night fight rules and to also give cover to the guys behind them.

But oh well it was just a quick and fun game that we had and we stayed up to midnight playing.
  • steesefactor · 1 month ago
I had some trouble following this one. Maybe because there was so many units on the battlefield. I think a wide shot of the board before each turn would have helped. I understand that the 10 min limit on youtube is pretty constraining. Have you looked at using something else, like vimeo? Not that I want you to go to 30 min videos, but a few extra mins could help.
  • sodcactus · 1 month ago
I was wondering when it was going to be posted. Been available on Youtube for a couple of days now. :-)
  • Berserker666 · 1 month ago
Great great battle report. Loved that there were no marines (chaos too) in this one. Gives me a bigger reason to pursue my tau army :)
  • BuFFo · 1 month ago
Thank you guys for another wonderful battle report.

The only complaints I have are the same that a few other posters keep bringing up...

    1) Army lists posted somewhere
    2) More Camera shots of the whole table ( I was having a hard time figuring out what tables edges were short and long in this one.. I had no idea the orientation of the game the entire time)
    3) More fart jokes.
  • slxiii · 1 month ago
Why Advanced stabilization on hq? serves literally no purpose but making you slower
  • darkwynn · 1 month ago
    advance relay was on HQ..
  • slxiii · 1 month ago
    do you mean positional relay?
  • ghost · 1 month ago
wow, zoanthropes and tyrant gaurd, theres somthing you dont see much in my area, same with pathfinders (i should know i play tau), i am also wondering why he put adv stabl on a commander with no heavy weapons
  • Moses Ying Jie Chen · 1 month ago
I think someone else pointed out earlier, but Advanced Stabilization System on the monat HQ does absolutely nothing, since the HQ already has Relentless... That's points wasted.... All in all though, this was a great report! Good stuff.
  • Dave · 1 month ago
great battle report, very close at points it seemed. almost makes me wanna do tau again.
  • Uzmn · 1 month ago
I've missed any rolls for instinctive behaviour on Tyranids side. And threre should be a LOT rolls on 5 with WN gaunts.
  • deuce1984 · 1 month ago
I apologize from the outset if this seems overly critical, and I understand you fellas are running fun games, but the lack of competitiveness is hurting the credibility of the BoLS staff. How are the readers supposed to take your write-ups on strategy as credible when each and every BatRep involves less then optimized lists.

Obviously, these video BatReps would get boring if every one involved Lash Prince/plague & oblit spam vs. Mech Guard vs. [power build] vs. [power build] etc. Perhaps an explanation for your unit choices would be beneficial to those watching to grasp a new gaming concept they have not thought of or have had difficulty implementing.

My suggestion is that you, BoLS Staff, as a voice in this gaming community, use the video BatReps more as tutorials of how to use specific units, tactics, unit combinations, and the like. Try to break codices, find ways of combating the list of the month, or add flavor to an army by explaining how to use less optimal units.

In this case, the Nid list was awful and deserved to lose.
  • tau_noob · 1 month ago
I would kill for a guide to the Tau paint scheme! Its the absolute best Tau scheme I have ever seen. I'm looking to get into the hobby and would happily pay Darkwynn for a guide.
  • 4thegreatergood · 1 week ago
Great batRep! :D tho..tau didnt run at least 10 battle suits (9+1hq) at 2k?? what was he thinking? :P
