Bell of Lost Souls: 40k HOBBY CHALLENGE: IG Command Squad Edition

  • Anon · 5 months ago
This is exciting. I hope to see at least one non-cadian/catachan squad.
  • faultie · 5 months ago
    Wow! Go-go IG players!
  • Couillu · 5 months ago
this will be great to see what you crazy guys out here are capable of! :) I would participate if I had a command squad to paint ^^ But noooo I will not break. I will wait until the release of the leman russ before starting my IG!
  • Jack Champion · 5 months ago
Sounds an immense competition, you've given me the incentive to kick start my IG plans, if the results are good will deffinitely be entering. Can they be traitor guard?
  • Chaosgerbil · 5 months ago
I'm a little confused that this is only open to modes using the new box sets. I have been working on my traitor command models.
  • bob · 5 months ago
It says that they must be based on the new versions with up to minor conversions and base detailing.
  • xarius · 5 months ago
guess that meeans my squats arent acceptable.......
  • Matt · 5 months ago
My IG use Catachan legs and Cadian torsos (and arms), with a mix of heads.

Am I allowed to mix the two boxes for this competition?
  • Herald of Nurgle · 5 months ago
Yep. They just have to be based around the sets - e.g: expecting standard, vox, medic, and prob. special weapon as well as plastic officer

Can't wait for your entry lol
  • James G · 5 months ago
I'd like to echo the people unsure about precisely how much conversion can be done. I use headswaps and sometimes even bodyswaps for my guard but they are based on the cadian command squad.
  • Kepora · 5 months ago
Would something along the lines of Tau converts be fine? Because I've already got an idea....
  • Herald of Nurgle · 5 months ago
    Hmm

I love the idea of the competition, but I won't be taking part for the simple fact that I don't know where to start lol
  • dave · 5 months ago
i plan on making a traitor guard force, would i be wasting my time entering if i planned on using a FW model as my commander and some FW models as regimental advisors? the rerst would be converted from the cadian command box.
  • Couillu · 5 months ago
Does traitor guards use the standard IG codex? Or is there any (un)official stuff for them?
  • Ed · 5 months ago
    Siege of Vraks
  • Couillu · 5 months ago
Thanks a lot, now the seed of the chaos is in me, I am wondering wether to go for IG or traitors! ^^
  • Ed · 5 months ago
You'll want part 2, part 1 is out of date already and I'd hold off deciding to buy it if you can find a copy to read first, as with most FW publications it has a few errors. It does also rely on having an IG dex and to a lesser extent the CSM dex for certain parts of the traitor list.

As for the traitors or IG question, I'm personally biased towards traitors but why not make some exchangable banners or something so you can switch. If only there were magnetizable paint jobs!
  • TSINI · 5 months ago
magnetizableb paintjobs, invention of the millennium!! :D
  • Ridicule · 5 months ago
    Question to BoLS:
Just saw the other comments as well but I'll add my question anyways.
Small convertions. Does that include perhaps a FW-head on one or two of the guardsmen, or will such choice of heads get me disqualified from the competition?

Also I assume that regimental advisors are allowed, that might not use any Command Squad bits at all?
  • Bijyu · 5 months ago
I saw this and got all excited I was even looking for my camera while reading it and then I got to the part where all entrants have to be from the cadian/catachan new boxes.

Definitely a bummer since I have sitting RIGHT in front of me my Death Korps Command Squad that I just finished painting yesterday.
  • Kungfuhustler · 5 months ago
Can I kitbash the two new HQ boxed sets? I'm building another 3k of guard right now (sigh, another 3k) and It's a cadian/catachan kitbash force. Would this be allowed?
  • jwolf_bols · 5 months ago
    Yes.
  • GMTA · 5 months ago
If it's a hobby challenge, it shouldn't matter if it's Cadian, Catachan, Mordian, Death Korps, whatever as long as it has Officer, Vox, Medic, specialists, etc.
  • Old_Paladin · 5 months ago
I don't think it matters what the regiment the squad ends up being; just that you must use either of the new plastic command boxes.
Anything else might be considered and unfair advantage; ie. if you have the money to buy and ship stuff from forgeworld, pig iron minis, etc. The forgeworld command squads (cadian, death korps, drop troops) already look so superior, that they need zero conversion work and even a crappy paint job wouldn't make them look bad.

I don't think they'd turn away green-stuffed models made to look like Mordian, Vostovyan, Steel Legion, etc.; but you'd have to do you're own work (not ride the coat-tails of an other company).
  • TSINI · 5 months ago
although i agree, the part about the crappy paint job wouldnt fly due to this really being a painting competition.
  • mordiano · 5 months ago
In this view I guess it makes sense to base it on the kits.

My first impression was that it severly limits the range of possible entrants and that it doesnt make full use of the IG range, its players and their creativity.

For sure I have difficulties in seeing why one would have an unfair advantage by having to hack and slash through tons of metal in order to get the kitted out command squad ready (as is the case if you are using the other ranges).

On the forgeworld however (particularly the deathcorps) I understand it, heck, they even look so good that they look out of place!!
  • Eyespy · 5 months ago
Well now, and I have a Command Squad arriving this week too...
  • Commisar_Xi · 5 months ago
Awesome. I have one Cadian and the bitz from another...hmmmm....
  • SpartanTau · 5 months ago
That Valkyrie will definitely help out my air regiment... Consider me entered!
  • Kungfuhustler · 5 months ago
Same here fellow BOLS poster, same here!
  • Bigred · 5 months ago
OK, CLARIFICATION: the entries must be composed in the majority of the above two plastic IG command boxes sets.

-You can get both boxes and mix and match if you desire.
-You can get the occasional bit from somewhere else to do some neat conversions
-You CAN'T get some other kit and use it as a basis, and add in a bit or two from the IG command squad kits.
-You CAN'T use forgeworld or the old metal IG models for your command squads.

In the end, the Challenge is to see what you guys can some up with using the 2 new IG plastic command sqaud kits.

    Go get em guys!
  • Kepora · 5 months ago
So using some Tau torsos, helmets, and possibly some weapons would be fine?
  • Chaosgerbil · 5 months ago
This was pretty clear, what isn't clear is the reasoning behind the restrictions. You're going to get less entries and less conversions.
  • SinCollector · 5 months ago
I'm going to take a wild stab here and guess the reasoning is to draw attention to the new kits.
  • Ed · 5 months ago
I don't collect guard but I'm tempted to give this a go anyway, that is, if I find time between my large backlog of Horrors. Actually it might help break that up a bit.
  • Myu · 5 months ago
A backlog of Horrors is horrible :P Sorry, I just had to say it.
  • OptimusDerf · 5 months ago
Grumbles... the motivation I need just as I leave for my summer job off in the woods for two months. Col. Kilgore needs all the Valkyries he can get! (plus motivation for me to make him and his surf buddies)
  • Dvastator · 5 months ago
I guess that means I am gonna have to buy a camera. And learn how to use it.

My only question now is which command squad to use? I have 3 so far. This is my third Guard Army!
  • MaxisLithium · 5 months ago
Boo-urns! This has to be one of the new catachan/cadian HQ boxes? I have been stripping and re-painting my Mordians for quite a while now, and could easilly do my HQ squad for this, but the fact that I HAVE to use the new model box means I can't submit them.

I can't believe I'm sayng this, but whoever came up with this idea sux.
  • TSINI · 5 months ago
i think everyone should stop worrying about "what is legal" and just submit yor command squad that you were going to build anyway, if its disqualified so what, its not like you bought a £15 boxset just to get an outside chance of winning a £35 one...

at the end of the day this is a painting competition, it shouldnt matter about whats underneath the paint, just that it fits the theme: ig command squad
  • Simonski · 5 months ago
I could well enter, would shipping to the UK be possible?
  • jwolf_bols · 5 months ago
    Yes.
  • MrChaos · 5 months ago
I'm thinking of entering this competition, but do you ship to Malaysia (South East Asia)?
  • jwolf_bols · 5 months ago
    Yes.
  • Equinox · 5 months ago
What is the deadline to submit an entry? I must be over looking it.
  • RealGenius · 5 months ago
    The Deadline is June 26th.
  • Admiral_Drax · 5 months ago
    Oh, man!

I can't wait to see these entries - I just wish I had the time, the money or (for that matter) the need of another command squad. Frustratingly, I now have three which are redundant!

    Have fun, everyone...

    - Drax.

I'm in. I'm not the greatest painter and have only been at this a year, but IG are my first army and they could use a new command squad anyway. Plus my wife thought the idea of a contest was an awesome way for me to get involved and went out and bought me the command squad for me to paint. Damn I love my wife!
  • Ridicule · 5 months ago
Sure sounds like a keeper :)
  • ician · 5 months ago
Hey guy's I am new to the website long term reader short term poster (blah blah blah), Just wanted to say I am really excited about this challenge and will be entering into it with a offshot Cadian command Squad I've been working on for the last few days. But so far I am loving the freedom that the new Command Squads have given IG players. Oh and Good luck to everyone who is involved.
  • Nooshlapoosh · 5 months ago
After reading the rules, a simple head swap would be ok yes?

    Thanks!
  • SpartanTau · 5 months ago
I just sent my entry in! Yes, early, but I didn't want to forget or leave town before the deadline. I did just notice that in my e-mail every single quote or double quote appeared as a question mark... Weird.
  • Ridicule · 5 months ago
So, deadline 26th of june, I assume that entries can be made during the entire day? +9 GMT or whatever it was the us had?

Hopefully I won't have to but it's nice to know.
