Bell of Lost Souls: 40K NEWS: 'Ard Boys Begins

  • Larry Hightower · 4 months ago
Argh! (shaking fist at sky) I am picking my wife up from the airport as I type. I had to miss it. Oh well, its not like I have played much since moving to Sacramento.
  • RazorOne · 4 months ago
Larry, if you are short opponents my brother and I are always up for a game at our house in which you can use anyone of our armies(all of them) or play at GEG. We live in Citrus Heights, If you want to get together let me know and we can go off line some how...
  • Hightower · 4 months ago
While I have no shortage of armies or opponents (via GEG), I may take you up on your offer. I am actually in Roseville, and playing once in a while in Citrus Heights beats having to drive into Sac Town. Shoot me a message through my facebook account.
  • RazorOne · 4 months ago
Sorry to continue this conv. here but Larry what is your facebook account? There are 3 pages of Larry Hightowers...

Those are some overall gorgeous painting jobs! I'm really digging those Dark Eldar.. and Thousand Sons, one of my favourite armies!
  • bushidoredpanda · 4 months ago
Heh, the purple and gold Dark Eldar as well as the Thousand Sons belong to Demosthenes, who is behind the TS himself. Jwolf is piloting the Dark Eldar, the red and black ones are his.
  • Skragger · 4 months ago
He is now my new favourite human being
  • bushidoredpanda · 4 months ago
He's got some sexy armies, that's for sure. He also has an excellent Salamanders army he's preparing. His Librarian recently beat my Eldrad in a painting competition by one point due to conversions :P

Badab is going to be bringing some VERY good looking armies out of the Fly Lords.
  • Skragger · 4 months ago
I really wish we got the same level of GW fun stuff up here in the Great White North as you Yanks.. the nearest GW store is almost half the province away, and we dont get to partake in great tournies like 'Ard Boyz and painting competitions. And Gork knows my lass would never let me pay real money to fly south for my "painted dolls" lol.
  • bushidoredpanda · 4 months ago
I know your pain, it's too bad too.

Maybe you can talk her into just one tournament a year and come down
    for BoLScon! :)
  • Skragger · 4 months ago
Lmao, the squats will make a comeback tour before that happens sadly.. oh well, I'll just have to organize me own I guess lol.
  • Demosthenes · 4 months ago
haha, thanks for the compliments Skragger. It takes me so long to get my models finished that I appreciate some positive feedback!
  • Viperion · 4 months ago
Lightning Claw Terminators? (Pic #3). Interesting choice for an Ardboyz tourney...
  • bushidoredpanda · 4 months ago
HA! I was wondering if someone would comment on my odd choice. I was not really out for a win as I will not be able to attend the regional tournament next month. I decided to just play deathwing, for the heck of it really.
  • Viperion · 4 months ago
Fair enough mate :) How'd they work out for you? I really like the re-roll LC's give you, but that 3++ save really is too good to pass up unfortunately.
  • bushidoredpanda · 4 months ago
Oh yeah, for normal marines the TH/SS is the much better option. This squad is actually from the last DA codex and 4th edition, so it's pretty old school :) It's really not meant for 5th edition heavy play, but it was pretty fun! I lost to Demosthenes round 2, and Mkerr round 3.

I think a combination of both is the better option, heavy TH/SS with a few claws.

All the local shops aren't having the comp until tomorrow and I'm scheduled to work 2-10pm. Curses!
  • mordiano · 4 months ago
I think well see the most competitive lists shown here and elswhere after the tournament.

Listening to the previous comments on 40k becomming a "list-building exercise" it would be cool to see some of the top games as battle reports, to show that it does go alot of tactics into games at this level. Perhaps with comments on tactical decisions made as the battlereport unfolds.

Its much more difficult for sure to make, and i think its therefore some ppl think 40k is all about armylists, because thats what ppl post 99% of the time. "Copy paste", Therefore fellow internauts think 40k is 99% about army lists.
  • Skragger · 4 months ago
Aaahhhh it would be amazing to see the last games set out as battle reports after!
  • kriegfreak · 4 months ago
I feel bad for those types of people.
  • TheRealChris · 4 months ago
You need something like Epic-uk.co.uk which has all the UK Epic results plugged in and a horde of the army lists. Would be great if something like BoLS did it with anyone able to enter lists and results.
  • Skragger · 4 months ago
In the IG picture, that fellow hitching a ride on the Chimera.. whats that on his back?
  • bushidoredpanda · 4 months ago
I believe that is Bullymike's (one of the Austin players) Straken and I think what you're referring to are hoses/cables attached to his metal arm.
  • bitteroldman · 4 months ago
I just got home from my local FLGS with my IG army. Pulled down 3rd place and am going on to the semi finals. Didn't see much variation in most of the armies in the tournament. Vanilla marines, orks with bikes, chaos with summoned daemons, and IG with valkyries. Strange tho, my list, which used no valks and just the same principals I've played with since 2nd edition did better than any of the "new hardcore super duper" IG lists.
  • bushidoredpanda · 4 months ago
I agree and have seen that some lists that were similar in the old codex are strong with only minor changes (mostly to fit correctly within the new codex). Jwolf's army is like this.

The strongest IG army here in Austin I'd say belongs to Darkwyn, who dropped I'd say about $1200 in the last month on forge world conversion kits/tanks. That figure may even be a bit conservative, his entire army is Elysian drop troops.
  • Viperion · 4 months ago
Care to share the gist of it? Drop troops? Vets? A million and one conscripts? ;)
  • bushidoredpanda · 4 months ago
If you mean Darkwynn's army, I can give an overview.

Everything in the army is mounted I believe, so lots of chimeras. He has two command squads with nearly all the upgrades in each, but no characters I don't think. He has 2 valkyries with veterans in them. He runs 2 Hydras, 2 medusas, a manticore. He's running a psychic battle squad and an elite terminator inquisitor armed with a psycannon with 2 mystics and a sage. I'm sure he had some other stuff, but those are the basics.
  • darkwynn · 4 months ago
going to do a write up of my list and post it up later.
  • RealGenius · 4 months ago
Don't forget the fantastic looking Chimeras were assembled by yours truly. :)

It is a tough nut to crack though-- the army is good at just about every part of the game; really a swiss army knife.
  • bushidoredpanda · 4 months ago
    And my awesome inquisitor!!! :)
  • bitteroldman · 4 months ago
Well, what I took was two command squard with astropaths and masters of the fleet. Put them in chimeras and nothing else in the squads. Three two russ teams, two teams were just normal Russes and the final team was two demolishers. Two plasma vet squads in chimeras. Two platoons with a total of 4 squads each with one melta gun, two lascannon HW squads, three autocannon HW squads. And of course... Marbo.
  • faultie · 4 months ago
IG took 1st (and 3rd too, I think) @ my LGS.
  • Blaznak · 4 months ago
Hey! Played in Minneapolis today. There were 3 Tyranid players, a marine codex, Space Wolves, Drop Pod marines, Dark Eldar, and something else I did not get to see.

Dark Eldar went 3-0 with three massacres. They were just unstoppable. Nids came in 2 and 3 on tied scores. Wolves and Marines came in low.

I went off base from Orks and ran Scuttler Nids. My two genestealer squads were very dominating, and I would've pulled 2nd if I had not gotten greedy (After killing the opposing Nid HQ, I got bogged down with guards and a killer fex. I should have just focussed on the guard. Bleh)

The space wolves were extremely frightening, but Rending beats Marine armor it turns out (Grin).

The generic codex marines actually got more kills on round three, but got killed off the two objectives. Feeder Tendrils are ugly!

Loser of the game for me was my Broodlord, but only because I kept trying to infiltrate him. Memo to self. Big HQ in middle of the board in cover is still in the middle of the board.

Well, I'm on to Semis and would be interested in seeing how others did!
  • Kirasu · 4 months ago
My mech eldar took 1st in pittsburgh with Chaos and sisters taking 2nd and 3rd

My meta was specifically designed to obliterate guard squadrons
  • BuFFo · 4 months ago
Okay, Kabal of the Budding Lotus....

Mission 1 - Versus Space Marines. Tabled on turn 6. Massacred, 24 points.

Mission 2 - Versus Space Marines. Massacred, 23 points.

Mission 3 - Versus Double Lash Plague Marine list. Massacred, 22 points.

    69 points total.

Top 3 in the Melbourne, Florida area....

    1 - Dark Eldar
    2 - Orks
    3 - Orks

    See ya in Orlando :)
  • RealGenius · 4 months ago
I was surprised to not see any Orks at our Round 1 (was at the fine tournament run by Bigred). I think it was probably 25% IG, 25% Marines, 25% Chaos Marines, 15% Nids and the rest other.

No Eldar, No WH/DH, No Daemons, No Tau.
  • phaze24 · 4 months ago
got 3rd in LA, i was expecting more guard but only 2 showed. i played one the first round deamons the second and marines (lysander) the 3rd and the hardest game was the deamons. over all a good time!
  • Sergent Zimm · 4 months ago
We had a fun showing up here in NW Washington. Our top 3 were Eldar (eldrad with dual seer councils on bikes), Deamons ( My list with fate weaver) and SM (Vulcan). It was a pretty good day. It was the first time I had run Fate weaver and he is silly. Had a good time and it should be cool to head down to Seattle for the regionals
  • luculluslegio · 4 months ago
Lol That was me with the SM w/Vulcan. Very good games. I had a blast.
  • Sergent Zimm · 4 months ago
Lol yeah great day for sure. You guys were a blast to play, come down anytime and play.
  • Asugradinwa · 4 months ago
What store was this? I won Games & Gizmos with a Vulkan list and will be playing the 2nd round at Ernie's Games in Woodinvile.
  • luculluslegio · 4 months ago
Eagles games in bellingham. Vulkan lists seem to be doing well everywhere. I really have to credit my inquisitor w/mystics they are the only reason I was able to get a draw the second game and still be in the running. Also Karma my Inquisitors Storm Bolter caused the last wound on a lord of change helping to even up the Kill Points at the last sec
  • Vince · 4 months ago
    At Dragon's Lair it was

    1. Chaos (No lash or Obliterators)
    2. SM (Vulkan)
    3. Chaos (Lash and Obliterators )
  • sodcactus · 4 months ago
Why am I not surprised that Mech IG is the top contenders?
  • lordseverus · 4 months ago
    At my LGS it was
    MEch eldar
    Vulkan Marines
    My mech Guard

Surprisingly I was the only guard player out 20 players. There were lots of choas and spacve marines, the 2 probably accounting for half of the armies.
  • bushidoredpanda · 4 months ago
I'm guessing there will be close to 50% guard at the regional tournaments.
  • joshuadearth · 4 months ago
In the Pacific NW in Washington Dark Eldar took first with 72 points and lost a total of 18 models combined between all three rounds! IG took second with a mega mech list and flash git orks took third from a guy who hasn't played 40K in almost 10 years! It was amazing to see this guy win after not playing for so long. All in all a great day and had a lot of fun!
  • doughboyguard · 4 months ago
I won first in MD with my guard list. 2nd was a crimson fist marines, and 3rd was nob bikers. Outflanking chimeras was a great success, though my favorite thing was the deathstrike missle. It was phenominal. 1 shot in the second misson killed 2 vindicators, 1 landraider (which was transporting vulkan and th/sh termies) and 1 dp.
  • ObiFett · 4 months ago
We had 26 people show up at our store with a WIDE variety of armies.

I came in second with Tau - 3 massacres and 8 bonus points, only second :(

    1st place - Jetbike Eldar
2nd place - Hybrid Tau (me)
    3rd place - Mech IG

Speaking of Dark Eldar, I had to face a list of ravagers, raiders, and witches in the final round. Stole the initiative and my missle pods, railguns, etc just tore his vehicles apart. It got close in the middle when a couple made it into my lines, but by the end he didn't have anything left on the board.
  • BuFFo · 4 months ago
Yes, stealing the initiative is pretty much pants in 40k.

I would enjoy the game much more if that rule was removed somehow.
  • Deathwing · 4 months ago
Sounds like everyone in Austin had fun.

Only two places here in Houston ran the Ard Boys and one was a GW store. They got told the day before by higher ups that they couldnt run it as an official qualifier as ard boys was going to be independent retail only this year. We still ran the event but those that placed cant advance.
That left only 1 place in the intire Houston area that people could try to play at, and they were full up already. Still had a great time, the local GW staff ran the event anyway and it was awesome,
Money armies were Eldar1, my Deathwing2 (huray 19kp for mission 2!), and Tau3.
  • moonreaper · 4 months ago
    Anyone seen any necrons ?
I read Tau got second at one tour But I havent seen any necrons .

Were there anyone playing them at least?
