I think it's really good in respect to the low budget and amateur-acteurs; I've seen much worse million dollar productions! It's a fan film after all and you should be glad that there are such devoted people in this hobby. And if you don't like it stop watching it! Nobody forces you to do so! It's always easy to complain about something, without beeing able to do it better or even knowing how much effort it takes to produce such a movie...

Signed. Its a low-budget fanmovie. And for that its great. Voice acting could be better but everyone who has tried to dub something on their own will know how hard that is.

Seeing as it is "only" a fan made film I am staggered by the production quality. 3D effects, acting by people who actually know and understand the story and a well captured grim and dark atmosphere. Though my German is poor it is easy enough to grasp what is going on.
Hats off to them for trying, I know I couldn't do any better.

Eh, it is a piece of crap if you ask me. If I were GW, I'd halt any official release as well. Fan made video appearing on youtube? That's fine. W40k deserves something much better than this shameful, low budget mess.

i want a 40k movie that has a similar style to to that of 300. THAT would be badASSSSSSSSSSSSS slomo kickass etc... with stunning comicbook like scene panels... good music too, not any of that weird holy music like in DOW. if they did it right it could and should be the best action movie ever.

"Madness? This... is... TERRA!!!"
I'm like the only person who hated "300". I was so pumped for it, then so utterly disappointed...
Supposedly GW is making a CGI movie, based on the Ultramarines, in the same quality as the Dawn of War intro videos.

haha well what im saying is that they could make this movie really good. and if they do, they probably would get a large reaction out of the people who dont play. however if it is as you say and the rumored movie is of the DOW quality....................... it wont be that good at all. if they dont do it the way i want it, i wont see it. in fact, they should let me direct it, because i will make sure it will be extra badass. ten times more badass. no, 100x more badass. as you can see, i would make it fairly badass.

BloodQuest, which wasn't really a blood angels movie. It failed because GW chose a new studio to produce it and they went down the drain (much like the original development of Warhammer Online).
Damnatus isn't bad for a fan movie, which is to say that it isn't good for a real movie, but succeeds far above what you'd expect on a small budget

Are you on "Krak" the movie was amazing. It was a little "Eurostyle" ala Dr. Who but you forget this was made for $15K this is a group of fans that made an AMAZING looking movie, not bad acting, and actually a pretty good plot. If you are comparing this to $100million movies ...Yes it will not be in the same ballpark but this movie was made by 40k fans for 40k fans. It had so many little things that you could tell these people loved the 40K universe.

Dude, there have been fan-films made of Star Wars that are nearly identical to the official movies, or spin-offs that have the exact same high quality effects, and top-notch acting.
I'm downloading Damnatus now, but I'm not expecting anything fantastic. If I remember the trailer correctly, it looked terrible.

30 years of technology will do that. That speaks more about how bad the CG was back then than how easy it is to get good CG now adays.

I was referring to the fan-made Star Wars: Episode III movie that was put online roughly 6 months before the official movie was released in theaters. It made big buzz in the news, even had anchors comparing scenes from the fan-film to the real Lucas movie.
But, anyway, I just gave Damnatus a quick scan, it seemed pretty good with effects, quality, and acting... though the lack of subtitles ruined it for me. Gotta give them kudos though, they did a great job overall.

I liked it. It was okay. not great, but okay. I managed to get the subtitles to work, and the acting was competent, the effects surprisingly good, and the writing had high points. It wasnt Dorkness Rising, but it was okay.

For a fan project this really is truely stunning, even with my limited grasp or german the creators seemed to capture every aspect of the 40k universe, much more so then certain other failed film projects created by GW. but yea can we get anyone in here to subtitle this thing?

Luckily, german is my native language, so no problem there... I'm at minute 35, and not that bad, actually. Captures the gritty atmosphere of 40K quite well, but the acting is... well...

I thought Damnatus was "ok", I mean its pretty decent for a fan-film, but still has a cheesiness to it that kinda ruined it for me. Still, I couldnt do better and I respect their efforts. The main crit I had was the godawful music choice, did they have to use a cheesey tame genre like death/black metal ? they should of used some dark electro-industrial like Allied Vision or even better...death-robot, that would of crushed our souls in the most grimdark way!

Sir, it is a fan production. As a Multimedia Specialist it was good for a fan production done on a limited budget. The acting was not all that great but there were a few gems in it that really shown bright.
If this had been a multimillion dollar film, then I would agree with you.
QBall78
Sorry, but i don't believe "Good call" fits here.
Funny thing is, that GW hasn't prevented the movie from being published because of the quality (they actually never referred to that). The reason was german copyright law, wich only allows economic rights for the movie beeing transfered to GW. Intellectual property of the movie always belongs to the artist and can't be transferred (that's how I understood it).
So GW banned the movie because they where affraid of loosing control over W40K.
The ending is pretty good but it was very long and needlessly drawn out. But i guess there so much to cover in the 40k background that it's be hard to make a movie true to the game keep it entertaining all the way through.

Its all envy cause germans did it :P Im german and watched it months ago. As others said its a fanfilm, live with it or do it better. If you want more battles and fights and actions go watch transformers or starship troopers or some b-movie warmovies from the 80es. I think an inqisition story fits better for 40k movie for peopl knowing nothing about 40k than sensless violence like the most warmovies.
ps: 300 the movie sucked only the comicbok is pretty nice

Word_Bearer

Well this was pretty much exactly what I was expecting quality wise, and I rather enjoyed it. The ending really surprised me, although I can't think of any more melodramatic of a way for the various characters to all die off, that was my primary disappointment. Also the fact that the daemonhost did not mutate at all, they just used those annoying camera effects for FAR too long. Still, it was definitely entertaining.

First off it's in german with no subtitles so how the hell is everyone else supposed to enjoy it. Second, the quality is trash so even if I understood german how the hell can I enjoy it. Fail!

I quite liked the ending. For a fan-made movie with a low budget, this thing is awesome, and the story is perfect. It does suffer from the acting style, though. At some points, you get the distinct impression of watching a live action roleplay session instead of a movie, which destroys the suspension of disbelief.
The ending does make it work again, though.

I really want to give them credit. And I do. The priest looks great some effects are well done, and for a fan film they put a ton of time, effort, and love into it.
But saying that I just watched it, and it wasn't much good... at all (bear in mind this is from a guy who hates Dr. Who). Corny hear and there line delivery wasn't believable. Everything camera related seems very amateur. Also everything was a "Hey we're a fan movie, with Easter eggs for the fans" and all at the same time coming off corny and forced.
Again I give credit where credit is due. Yet the fact that this movie exists, is more of a plus than the film itself.

It's a valiant effort I'm sure from fans with a low budget to recreate the stiflingly dark atmoshphere and look of 40K. However, the film has some major problems from a pure film-making standpoint. There are too many endlessly long, ponderous shots and lengthy walking sequences used to pad out the film, reminiscent of the films of one Robert L. Lippert. There's more walking in this movie frame for frame than if you combined the walking scenes in King Dinosaur with the rock climbing scenes from Lost Continent (any Mystery Science Theater 3000 fans out there?). It takes more than 20 minutes before nearly anything actually happens, and that doesn't last long before we're back to more ponderous shots and walking sequences. If it wasn't for the fact that this film is a rare 40K related effort, I never would have stuck with it for more than 5 minutes. That said, I admire the effort and energy that went into the project by what appear to be fans and purely amateur film makers.

It's the movie - I got lucky enough to see a screener of it last year. It's really pretty good, and I hate that Vu and the guys weren't able to market it out like they wanted (it was gonna be free anyway!). One of the best fan movies I've seen.

Hey, heresy online, you like to repeat yourself, don't you?
I was one of the guys working on Damnatus over 8 years ago. Back then all of us were amateurs in film making (now most of us have taken a degree in different branches of media studies or film making), just loving the fluff and feel, and so we based the film's look on John Blanche's red-dominated artwork. When criticizing the film, remember that the technology that came to use had to be affordable for the students we were and is now almost nine years old, too. We didn't want to create something groundbreaking in terms of effects or technology, we just wanted to show our love for the 40k universe and perhaps get people into it who don't know anything about it.
Looking at it now we all know it could have been better if we'd make it now in terms of film making, but it is a fact that dispite all the struggle with GW it was fun to make it, to be part of it, and to get to know a lot of other hobbyists over the course of production sharing the same love. And it is a shame it can never be released properly for a broader audience.
Because in the end we have to be aware of one fact: after this film has been banned, all efforts by other creative people to do similar or better fan projects have been brought to a halt. Forever. Interaction with GW and their fans on the basis of the awesome fluff they created is practically non-existent, now that GW have proven that they don't put any trust in their fans who want to pay tribute to the fluff. I'm shure that an agreement could have been reached, if GW had been willing to do so.
It's a fan film after all and you should be glad that there are such devoted people in this hobby. And if you don't like it stop watching it! Nobody forces you to do so!
