Bell of Lost Souls: 40K NEWS: How to Paint Citadel Tanks

  • Lonesome George · 5 months ago
Could be very cool. The How to Paint Citadel Miniatures and How to Paint Space Marines books were okay, but I feel that there are better guides and tutorials on the web. You just need to know where to find them.

All in all, I'm willing to bet that this won't hold a candle to Imperial Armor Masterclass.

Pretty much all of GW's "How To" books are crappy or redundant. They're good for giving ideas, but they don't really put much depth into the whole "How To".

For example, they'll say something as vague and unexplained as: "We made this gaming table using only plywood and foam board." It's like, yeah, great, but can we get some dimensions? Or what type of stores to get the supplies? Or even what tools were used?

Not to mention most of the pictures or articles in the books are already covered in codexes, expansions, or even the core rule book's modeling section.
  • Ssyrie · 5 months ago
The problem with listing the stores they got supplies from, is that most of us don't live in England so many of those retailers won't be available to us. Generally speaking, most stuff can be at the following three places: hobby stores, arts & craft stores, and you local hardware store.

I will agree that sometimes they could be a little more forthcoming with details about how they built certain things.

But the "How To" books are really aimed to less experienced painters/modelers who are getting started. What the books are good at doings is taking articles that are spread across numerous books, White Dwarfs, and web pages and putting them all together in one easy to flip through book. You may own every Codex/Army Book but I know plenty of people who only buy the ones for the armies they plan to build and play.

I agree.. I've been modeling and painting for nigh on 10 years now, but when I was starting out a book titled "Imperial Armour Masterclass" would have intimidated me into *not* buying it. As a beginner I'd rather have a simple book called "how to paint tanks" its small, concise, and right to the point. Great for a starter

Being said, that's what it's aimed at, beginners. people like (probably many of) us, who have painted for a long time don't need to have those basics outlined for us in black and white, we know how to drybrush and use washes, so the Masterclass book series are more in our league, whereas a book aimed towards new painters is obviously going to be too simple for advanced painters.

It's kinda like complaining the kids picture book doesn't offer enough plot for lovers of classic fiction.

Even though "The Scarlet Letter" can't hold a candle to "Where the Wild Things are"!
  • Mike X · 5 months ago
I have to say, the "How To" books are a lot worse for starters, for the exact same reasons I gave above.

People entirely new to the hobby will have even less clue what the hell "foam board" or "plasticard" is, and will have even more questions unanswered by the books than someone who's learned from his own trial and error experiences.

I still, to this day, cannot find foam board or plasticard anywhere. I've tried Lowe's, Home Depot, Target, Wal-Mart, my LGS, and even an arts & crafts shop (Michael's).

But I will admit, the books are clearly aimed (read: marketed) towards new players... because they don't know any better. Like I said before, most of the content in them is either already in other books, or free online.

However, I can't blame GW for trying to make an easy buck. They are a business, after all.
  • Lagduf · 5 months ago
GW's Source Books for the LotR SBG gave pretty decent tutorials and descriptions on how to build terrain and boards (with dimensions, materials and everything).

I don't think their is a need to list where to get materials since it should be assumed that any modeler worth his salt will know where to get stuff like this.

I really with GW would put out some scenario books for 40K that were similar to the Source Books for LotR SBG.
  • Skragger · 5 months ago
But as a beginner, building a beautiful gaming board usually isn't the first thing on my mind (at least). And I agree.. I cant find plasticard for the life of me, it seems up here in Canada it doesn't exist at all. Rona, Home Depot, Michael's, none of them seem to have the stuff.

A *really* good source if you're looking for terrain tips is, surprisingly, railway modeling mags. My dad's railway mags taught me the paper mache over balled up newsprint and scotch-tape method of making really detailed hills.

I tend to agree on the overall side, buying books is almost null these days, everything is online for free, but it's like the difference between downloading and buying a codex, I like having it in my hot little hands as opposed to a screen.

And yes, but even Where the Wild Things Are (a good piece of memory there) doesn't hold up to I Love You Forever.. still cry at that one...
  • DJL · 5 months ago
It doesn't matter where you are; plasticard is hard to find. You're not going to find it at Michaels. Here's a hint - try eBay and look for plasticard from Plastruct or Evergreen. Alternatively, GF9 has a variety pack of various thicknesses.
  • soundgear · 5 months ago
Go to a train store. That is where I get all of my plasticard and formboard. They usually a large selection of plasticard, and if they don't carry formboard, they will be more than willing to tell you where to get it.

    @Mike X,

    Just trying to help:
"Foam board" at Lowe's and Home Depot will be in the sheet lumber section near the MDF/Particle Board. An employee should be able to help if you ask the for insulation foam that comes in large sheets; usually pink or blue.

Michael's and other craft stores carry foam core but It's expensive compared to insulation foam. It should be on the aisle with the other types of poster board. Someone in the framing section should be able to point you in the right direction.

HobbyTown USA is the best chain store I have been able to find plasticard at. You may not have one near you but here is a link to their store locator; the one's that also carry GW merchandise are listed in the back of White Dwarf:

    http://www.hobbytown.com/StoreLocator/

They typically carry Plastruct; here is a link to Plastruct's dealer locator:

    http://www.plastruct.com/Pages/USDealers.html

    Hope this helps! :)
  • Mike X · 5 months ago
No, no, no. I said "What TYPE of stores", not "What stores". I am very familiar with franchising and the fact that not every retailer is international.

I'm just saying it'd be nice if they told us if these items were found at a hardware store, craft store, convenience store, electronics store, grocery store, etc. I mean, I know they can't hit every nail on the head, but a little guidance would be quite helpful.
  • Lagduf · 5 months ago
As someone who builds scale models you really should know where to get materials at.

Any good hobby shop will have most of what you need, other than that hit up a hardware store.

And the internet is your friend.

I don't really think out of all things to criticize GW's books for that this is really anything of any importance.
  • Shane · 5 months ago
Well i have to agree with lagduf.

You basically just ask at a hobby store, or search online.

Just for FYI. There arent that many stores one would go to looking for things to use for modelling. Craft Shop, place like lowes has things for modellers as well. Why would one go to a grocers? Or convenience Store. The beginners would go to the obvious places.

And i mean, hell, even those places have things we can use for our hobby, if you know what your doing.
  • Mike X · 5 months ago
I have three local game stores, and none of them carry foamcore or plasticard. They have a few tables but they're so old that none of the employees know where the original materials came from. How sad is that?

Edit: Actually, my most frequented LGS buys its gaming tables used on eBay or from other closing hobby stores.

The other two stores have the older tables.
  • Irondog · 5 months ago
If you're looking for terrain making materials in a game store, you'll have a tough time unless you're looking for the GW stuff (CoD buildings, etc.). What you need to look for is a hobby store, especially one that specializes in model trains. They should have all the stuff you need, plasticard, trees, flock, etc.

"All in all, I'm willing to bet that this won't hold a candle to Imperial Armor Masterclass."

I think the clue here son is the word "MASTERCLASS".

GZ on being the first to whine and then post "first, btw" it will be your life's greatest achievement.
  • Kieran · 5 months ago
That will be interesting, but I agree with Lonesome George, it wont be anything close to Imperial Armour Masterclass, which I dont own either. Too bad really, I should get it........... anyways, 1 would definatly be the Rhino/Razorback/Predator/Whirlwind/Vindicator, because that is really 5 tanks, plus the chaos versions. And 2 is probably the Land Raider, the normal one. Then hopefully something Eldar and Ork. As for the 5th, it's probably the Baneblade.
  • fade_74 · 5 months ago
Yeah....imperial armor masterclass is great. There are tons of great ideas in it. I considered myself good at painting vehicles. After I got that book....my vehicles look TONS better.
  • Lagduf · 5 months ago
I thought the Masterclass books were for advanced painters and modelers while the "how to paint" books were for beginners.

It was my understanding masterclass books used advanced techniques, particularly for weathering vehicles?
  • SinSynn · 5 months ago
    let's just guess
    Predator
    Landraider
    Battlewagon
    Wave Serpent
    Baneblade
    *sigh*
Once again, the Tau get no love from GW....A Devilfish or Hammerhead would've been nice.
  • FiscalHermitCrab · 5 months ago
Yep! Makes perfect business sense, which is all GW cares about. The fluff is just a tool they use to sell you more stuff and they don't care what condition the fluff is in or if it gets put back properly when they're done with it as long as they can use it to pay the mortgage.
  • RexScarlet · 5 months ago
    Judging from the "latest" Box art (Images/photos) of GW's newest products, maybe they should release a book;

    "How to MODEL Citadel Tanks"

    dos-pesos
  • Anon · 5 months ago
Generally the books include a section of modeling. I know what you mean, but i'm just saying.
  • BrassScorpion · 5 months ago
Some stores have preview copies of this book already. There's one in the Maryland Battle Bunker that's been out for preview for about 2 weeks. There are a number of good hobby ideas in this book as far as modeling damage, etc.
  • berzerkermike84 · 5 months ago
mike x u just sumed it up. why have a how to book when half of it is a "sales catalog".
  • Mike X · 5 months ago
Like the new Space Marines codex's misleading sales pitch: "Biggest codex to date!"

Yeah... 'cause literally 22 pages of it were just a pictorial of the Space Marine catalog. Completely useless and worthless, but allowed them to bump the price by $8 ($10 at the time).

Did anyone else cut these pages out and trash them?
  • · 5 months ago
"Did anyone else cut these pages out and trash them?"

Yes, I did, because I'm TWELVE YEARS OLD...

    Good grief...
  • Mike X · 5 months ago
I wish I were 12, I would've never complained about the price if I were.
  • UltramarineFan · 5 months ago
You must have been given everything you wanted as a child then if that's your vision of the average twelve year old.
  • UltramarineFan · 5 months ago
No, because I don't pay for something if I'm then going to destroy some of what I've bought. What's the point? You've paid the full price and then you rip out some of what you've paid for. *clap clap*
  • Mike X · 5 months ago
Dude, people destroy rhinos and other models all the time to make terrain pieces.

I didn't want a bunch of useless pages of catalog in a stats book. It's not much different than ripping out those subscription order forms from magazines... except magazines don't bump the price by $8 or $10 just for including them.
  • UltramarineFan · 5 months ago
Yeah, but they use the terrain afterwards don't they?

'It's not much different than ripping out those subscription order forms' It kinda is because those magazines are going to sell you many issues throughout the course of the year. You're probably only going to need one copy of that codex.
  • Anonoymouse · 5 months ago
You know it would be nice if us Dark Eldar players would get some respect. If we can't get a Codex update, then why not at least include our vehicles in the new painting guide?
  • (*ಠ益ಠ) · 5 months ago
Look, you have JWolf on your side.

That's just as good as GW taking you seriously!
  • Anonoymouse · 5 months ago
For those that don't want to squint, the five vehicles are:

"Space Marine Predator, an Imperial Guard Leman Russ, an Ork Trukk, a Chaos Space Marine Defiler and an Eldar Falcon."
  • Capt_Forrix · 5 months ago
You do realize that's completely wrong, right?

It's a SM Predator, an Eldar Falcon, an IG Baneblade, probably also an IG Russ, and an Ork Trukk.

Where'd you get the Defiler from?
  • Anonoymouse · 5 months ago
    From the GW website

Books > Books Advance Orders > How To Paint Citadel Tanks

    It's in the book description.

"This 96-page book covers every aspect of paining and modelling Citadel vehicles, including: essential tools and materials, preparation and assembly, and five complete stage-by-stage guides examining: a Space Marine Predator, an Imperial Guard Leman Russ, an Ork Trukk, a Chaos Space Marine Defiler and an Eldar Falcon."

Could be good for beginners but if it's like their other How To books it will leave most players who don't play GW's favorite armies/varients in the dark. I will definitely have a flick through before I make my mind up fully but I hope it's not a disapointment like "how to paint ultramarines, with a few pages at the back for everyone else"

Also anyone else notice the really obvious transfer on the predator? I don't consider myself a good painter but even I can make a transfer blend in better than that.
  • mike · 5 months ago
Why is everyone bashing this book before it comes out? All their other ones were decent. Hey in the making terrain book they even said "we got this cardboard from cutting up cereal boxes" To find the foam core board, well go to walmart, turn to the left side of the store, head to the stationary part, look for the aisle that has the posterboard and there you go. Really do you need GW to be that detailed? The last book HTP citidel models I learned a few techniques and I've been doing this for years! And hey, no one has a gun to your head telling you to buy it!
