Why is everyone bashing this book before it comes out? All their other ones were decent. Hey in the making terrain book they even said "we got this cardboard from cutting up cereal boxes" To find the foam core board, well go to walmart, turn to the left side of the store, head to the stationary part, look for the aisle that has the posterboard and there you go. Really do you need GW to be that detailed? The last book HTP citidel models I learned a few techniques and I've been doing this for years! And hey, no one has a gun to your head telling you to buy it!

If you're looking for terrain making materials in a game store, you'll have a tough time unless you're looking for the GW stuff (CoD buildings, etc.). What you need to look for is a hobby store, especially one that specializes in model trains. They should have all the stuff you need, plasticard, trees, flock, etc.

Dude, people destroy rhinos and other models all the time to make terrain pieces.

I didn't want a bunch of useless pages of catalog in a stats book. It's not much different than ripping out those subscription order forms from magazines... except magazines don't bump the price by $8 or $10 just for including them.

I have three local game stores, and none of them carry foamcore or plasticard. They have a few tables but they're so old that none of the employees know where the original materials came from. How sad is that?

Edit: Actually, my most frequented LGS buys its gaming tables used on eBay or from other closing hobby stores.

The other two stores have the older tables.

Just trying to help:
"Foam board" at Lowe's and Home Depot will be in the sheet lumber section near the MDF/Particle Board. An employee should be able to help if you ask the for insulation foam that comes in large sheets; usually pink or blue.

Michael's and other craft stores carry foam core but It's expensive compared to insulation foam. It should be on the aisle with the other types of poster board. Someone in the framing section should be able to point you in the right direction.

HobbyTown USA is the best chain store I have been able to find plasticard at. You may not have one near you but here is a link to their store locator; the one's that also carry GW merchandise are listed in the back of White Dwarf:

Go to a train store. That is where I get all of my plasticard and formboard. They usually a large selection of plasticard, and if they don't carry formboard, they will be more than willing to tell you where to get it.

Could be good for beginners but if it's like their other How To books it will leave most players who don't play GW's favorite armies/varients in the dark. I will definitely have a flick through before I make my mind up fully but I hope it's not a disapointment like "how to paint ultramarines, with a few pages at the back for everyone else"

Also anyone else notice the really obvious transfer on the predator? I don't consider myself a good painter but even I can make a transfer blend in better than that.

It doesn't matter where you are; plasticard is hard to find. You're not going to find it at Michaels. Here's a hint - try eBay and look for plasticard from Plastruct or Evergreen. Alternatively, GF9 has a variety pack of various thicknesses.

But as a beginner, building a beautiful gaming board usually isn't the first thing on my mind (at least). And I agree.. I cant find plasticard for the life of me, it seems up here in Canada it doesn't exist at all. Rona, Home Depot, Michael's, none of them seem to have the stuff.

A *really* good source if you're looking for terrain tips is, surprisingly, railway modeling mags. My dad's railway mags taught me the paper mache over balled up newsprint and scotch-tape method of making really detailed hills.

I tend to agree on the overall side, buying books is almost null these days, everything is online for free, but it's like the difference between downloading and buying a codex, I like having it in my hot little hands as opposed to a screen.

And yes, but even Where the Wild Things Are (a good piece of memory there) doesn't hold up to I Love You Forever.. still cry at that one...

Well i have to agree with lagduf.

You basically just ask at a hobby store, or search online.

Just for FYI. There arent that many stores one would go to looking for things to use for modelling. Craft Shop, place like lowes has things for modellers as well. Why would one go to a grocers? Or convenience Store. The beginners would go to the obvious places.

And i mean, hell, even those places have things we can use for our hobby, if you know what your doing.

I thought the Masterclass books were for advanced painters and modelers while the "how to paint" books were for beginners.

It was my understanding masterclass books used advanced techniques, particularly for weathering vehicles?

As someone who builds scale models you really should know where to get materials at.

Any good hobby shop will have most of what you need, other than that hit up a hardware store.

And the internet is your friend.

I don't really think out of all things to criticize GW's books for that this is really anything of any importance.

GW's Source Books for the LotR SBG gave pretty decent tutorials and descriptions on how to build terrain and boards (with dimensions, materials and everything).

I don't think their is a need to list where to get materials since it should be assumed that any modeler worth his salt will know where to get stuff like this.

I really with GW would put out some scenario books for 40K that were similar to the Source Books for LotR SBG.

Yeah... 'cause literally 22 pages of it were just a pictorial of the Space Marine catalog. Completely useless and worthless, but allowed them to bump the price by $8 ($10 at the time).

Did anyone else cut these pages out and trash them?

I have to say, the "How To" books are a lot worse for starters, for the exact same reasons I gave above.

People entirely new to the hobby will have even less clue what the hell "foam board" or "plasticard" is, and will have even more questions unanswered by the books than someone who's learned from his own trial and error experiences.

I still, to this day, cannot find foam board or plasticard anywhere. I've tried Lowe's, Home Depot, Target, Wal-Mart, my LGS, and even an arts & crafts shop (Michael's).

But I will admit, the books are clearly aimed (read: marketed) towards new players... because they don't know any better. Like I said before, most of the content in them is either already in other books, or free online.

However, I can't blame GW for trying to make an easy buck. They are a business, after all.

No, no, no. I said "What TYPE of stores", not "What stores". I am very familiar with franchising and the fact that not every retailer is international.

I'm just saying it'd be nice if they told us if these items were found at a hardware store, craft store, convenience store, electronics store, grocery store, etc. I mean, I know they can't hit every nail on the head, but a little guidance would be quite helpful.
