If you keep coming first like this, you will have no success with women in the future. Not that you would anyway, but this won't help.

I know! Everybody that tries to be first, I have a new game for you. Try to be LAST instead. Just fill in the last comment, like 2 weeks after the blog-post been made or something.
  • Edward · 1 month ago
I'm fairly sure I never saw these 'first' comments until the last few years. In the mid-'90s the web was still mainly populated by intelligent people.

What are you talking about, sounds glorious.
  • Commisar_Xi · 1 month ago
It was awesome. Intelligence was required to game online, too, none of this battle.net crap (just an example) AND Zork was king!

Speaking as a Canadian gamer, a girl one at that. I LOVE GAMESDAY! I have been the past several years and not only that , I have put my blood, sweat and tears into making a table for these events. In fact last year my table won best Club Table. I had already begun planning a bad-ass female commissar costume for this year.

I think hosting only one North American GD shows a lack of respect from GW towards their fans/gamers/buyers. One day in each North American country of fan appreciation, one day for gamers to interact with other gamers to share ideas, battle and learn new stuff is apparently too much for GW to handle. This is serious bull.

Guess who won't be making a table this year and guess who's bad-ass female commissar costume is going in the garbage.
  • Lyinar · 1 month ago
Please don't throw away the costume... Come down to DragonCon with the money you'll not be spending on Games Day and show it off!
  • aL: · 1 month ago
GW have consistently shown a lack of respect for fans/gamers in North America. The NorAm management have run it as a "money money money" company, with little or no regard to the hobby or community end. It's entirely fallen to the fans/gamer/clubs to fill the void.

Which probably means we Canadians should just organize our own Games Day and tell GW to go flog itself.

And I second the vote for not throwing away the costume.... instead, post pictures!
  • Commisar_Xi · 1 month ago
No no no use the money you save and tour local cons!
  • BuFFo · 1 month ago
I guess people can't have fun in this hobby anymore unless GW tells them to.

    Pathetic.
  • Crevab · 1 month ago
Geez Buffo, you sure are aggressive about this today. What is it about people wanting GW to be responsible for its own games, that you find annoying?

Nothing can stop House rules. Tournament or the living room, no one will burst in and order your to follow the codex. But to rely on house rules? To use their existence as reasoning for a lack of errata, balance, what have you? THAT is what is pathetic in my opinion.
  • Herald of Nurgle · 1 month ago
    No-one expects the Imperial Inquisition!
  • aL: · 1 month ago
Yeah... well, you're one person I won't miss not meeting at Games Day.

Calling anybody that doesn't agree with you pathetic: very very pathetic.
  • kafkadreams · 1 month ago
Worst FAQ Ever. There's so many things in that book that need errata and they give us this? Would have been better to not put out anything.
  • hogue008 · 1 month ago
Pretty short for and FAQ but maybe I haven't play enough PS to know if it needs more or not.
  • Farsight · 1 month ago
Glad they finally ended the "Deepstirke in entry" debate.
  • aL: · 1 month ago
From the wording of the GD announcement, I take it there will be NO Games Day Canada this year. One Games Day to rule them all (for NorAm)... sucks. Continent is way too big for just a single Games Day.
  • liazardman · 1 month ago
Ya... somehow I dont see the the relation.

"We have received input from hobbyists, clubs, and attending parents as well as from many parts of our own business on things that need to change or improve to make your Games Day experience a truly memorable one."

So instead we are going to have 1 that 90% of you CANT make it to. Smooth GW... How about one games day Europe too? Bet that wouldn't fly would it? To me looks like cost cutting. Almost surprised there wasnt also an announcement about raising NA prices to pay for it...
  • jasperflint · 1 month ago
    slight problem with language...
  • eldargal · 1 month ago
Of course its cost cutting. By all accounts the quality of GD has been declining, while costs have been increasing. They are cutting costs AND focusing on delivering one quality event over a couple of mediocre ones. It makes sense, if they deliver.
  • Tynskel · 1 month ago
Quality declining? WWhattt are you talking about. In the last 5 years we have seen Plastics like crazy, Apocalypse, 5th Edition, Planet Strike, and Planetary Empires.

I don't think the Quality is dropping. However, the Global Economy is in the PITS. That may have to do with cutting Very EXPENSIVE events.
  • pad_uk · 1 month ago
He said the quality of Games Day has been declining. And I am inclined to agree. Games Day UK just gone was nowhere near as good as it was a few years back.
  • eldargal · 1 month ago
Quality of Games Day, not quality of Games Workshop. GWs quality is unmatched and well wroth putting up with an idiosyncratic approach to customer relations.
  • Commisar_Xi · 1 month ago
Once again we the dedicated hobbyists get fucked.

THANKS GAMES WORKSHOP!! MAY I HAVE ANOTHER?!

And marketing fail. What, did they ask three asshats in a Baltimore GW where they wanted the GD this year?
  • Chronowraith · 1 month ago
So wait, they are holding only one Games Day AND limiting the number of tickets available?

I know that the recent Games Days have gone down hill for a variety of reasons. I fail to see how reducing the number of people that can attend the event will make the event "amazing".

A single Games Day event works fine for smaller geographic locations such as Paris, England, and Italy. One can drive clear across all of those countries in a day or less and fly across them for relatively cheap. One can't exactly drive from Los Angeles to Baltimore in a day and flying cross-country costs almost as much as flying overseas these days.
  • chranos · 1 month ago
you know Paris is not a country right?
  • LordSandwich · 1 month ago
Aah! I was going to say that.
  • Steel_Rain · 1 month ago
Well, limiting the number of tickets does two things for them. One, by limiting the supply, they artificially drive up the demand, thus increasing the chance they sell out the event. Two, by limiting the number of people attending it's easier to forecast attendence for events. If I know I can get into a pick up game or a huge mega-battle because there's a limit to the number of people there and hence there's an appropriate number of tables, I'm more likely to actually bring my army and have that "amazing" time
  • Ssyrie · 1 month ago
It also makes sure they don't oversell the event and get shut down by the fire marshal. Even San Diego Comic Con had to start limiting ticket sales when the fire marshal threatened to shut the doors to the exhibit hall one year. That's why me and by brother already got our tickets for SDCC2010 (which isn't until July).

And as for complaints about the cost of flying. I just checked Priceline.com for round trip tickets from LAX to Baltimore MD (8/20/2010-8/22/2010) and the price ranged from $250 with layovers to just under $400 for non-stop. If I lived in LA and wanted to go to games day, I'd be saving up for that plane ticket as fast as possible. So quit whining, make a plan, and go to GD2010.
  • Katie D · 1 month ago
A bit short, but it covered probably the most controversial issue, so well done, I guess.
  • rockdeity · 1 month ago
wow, seriously? One question and one answer? They didn't even definitely say whether daemons can assault when they deep strike... or is that covered by "in its entry"?
  • anubisblade · 1 month ago
it doesn't even remotly answer the question of can deamons assault the turn they land just when they can land. terminators and droppods have the rules laid out nicely for answering that same question but deamons are ... i guess up to the conventions of the players or house rules of the club/store
  • Sam Akers · 1 month ago
Since they removed the "in their entry" part of the deepstrike assault rule (I have no idea what the actually rule is called, I don't have a PS book with me) there is no longer a question that needs to be answered. Daemons can deepstrike, and in PS units that can deepstrike can assault afterwards. Done.
  • mongolian_bbq · 1 month ago
It actually makes it extremely clear. The removal of "in unit entry" means that as long as you could normally Deep Strike, you may assault. So Deamons, winged Hive Tyrants, etc may indeed assault the turn they show up.
  • zombied00d · 1 month ago
So on top of saying "Screw you" to much of their US and Canadian fanbase, they're also giving the finger to anyone who happens to place any emphasis on hobby participation outside of the GW family - who really thinks that scheduling this to coincide so closely with both GenCon and PAX was unintentional?

    Good job guys!
  • Mike X · 1 month ago
A single GD is a good thing, in my opinion. It makes sense. Think of all the other events and conventions of other companies that are singularly placed.

"If you host it, they will come."
  • pierce raats · 1 month ago
"If you host it, they will come."

the problem is that they AREN'T hosting it anymore, ONE GD for all of North America is a joke. As a result I can say that I personally wont be going, and I think that the majority of Canadians will feel the same. I think Canadian sales are going to suffer because of this.
  • Faolain · 1 month ago
I have played many games of planetstrike, and this doesn't begin to work out a lot of the ambiguities in the missions. We've had to houserule tons of things.
  • tjkopena · 1 month ago
I would be really curious what their process is for collecting and selecting items to go in FAQs. One question? A decent read through the book alone raises at least a handful of questions, let alone play time...
  • abusepuppy · 1 month ago
    Step 1: Take a nap.

Step 2: Wait at least three months past the release of the book, so everyone has had plenty of time to argue endlessly over every iota of rules and entrench themselves into whatever bizarre interpretation of the rules they have decided upon.

Step 3: Ignore every major rules dispute in the community at large.

Step 4: Find one drooling incompetent who doesn't know how to even pronounce the word "space marine," much less play the game. Ask him if he has any questions.

Step 5: Put out a FAQ with Q/A pairs like "Q: Can I take a cover save against line of sight? My Demolisher looks to be smaller than it should be! A: No; the assault rules are only used during the assault phase, so it's just going to have to deal with the consequences of being a tank!"

Note that at no point during the process does "profit" enter into the equation.
  • Major_AC_Dent · 1 month ago
I doubt they will ever have just one Games Day Europe...
  • Miggidy_Mack · 1 month ago
I still don't understand why this FAQ took THIS long to produce.
  • BuFFo · 1 month ago
Because the masses of customers are flat out to friggin stupid to realize they can 'house rule' their games all they want.

Instead they NEED GW to house rule a house rule based game themselves.

People have no imagination. Haven't since 3rd edition.
  • abusepuppy · 1 month ago
See, the problem with house rules is someone inevitably calls them unfair one way or another- and sometimes rightfully so.

GW, as an ostensibly-neutral third party and creator of the game, has an authority that individual players or playgroups lack.

Or would you be just as likely to go to jail because Joe Street told you to as if a policeman did?
  • BuFFo · 1 month ago
    What?

If you bother to read the Shrine of Knowledge, it specifically says, by GW itself, that FAQS are no more an authority than house rules your friends make up.

And this is my point... People require GW to hold their hands in this 'hobby'.

    Its disgusting.
  • anubisblade · 1 month ago
problem is the rules lawyers that don't play by house rules at all and if ya can't show it as bein from GW / FW they don't accept it. in my area we have over 50% of the players as rules lawyers so ya rarely have a fun game with all the goofy rules like all weapons have their ranges doubled or 2 razorbacks can be bought for a single 10 man squad if they combat squad up. but all too often ppl revert to rules as writen and never allow for any idea play. i try and avoid them but all too often i am stuck playing them if i want to get in a game
  • aL: · 1 month ago
It's not about "rules lawyers", it's about consistency of play between strangers. You may like playing only with your small circle of friends, but for some of us the hobby gets a lot more interesting when we meet new people. And, on meeting them, we would prefer to be able to get down to gaming right away, instead of arguing for hours about who's house rules are better or fairer.
  • abusepuppy · 1 month ago
    >And this is my point... People require GW to hold their hands in this 'hobby'.

Hell, son, if you're such a go-getter why don't you write up your own system of rules and popularize it across three continents? No one's telling you how to play.

As it so happens, the rest of us, when we buy what is ostensibly a system of rules for a game, like it when those rules are reasonably complete and well-written. Saying "well you can just make the rest up as you go along!" means nothing because I could do that anyways, so why are we paying US$75+ for this if it's gonna get tossed out the window on a whim?

aL also raises a very good point: if you're playing with a bunch of strangers, you want a common ground you can all agree on. You should not have to spend half an hour hashing out "Okay, so how do _you_ guys play Biovores? Alright, what about..."

You seem to equate wanting a set of official rules with being some sort of baby-faced loser who is terrified to do anything on their own, when in reality it's much more of an issue of not wanting to spend an hour arguing with someone over what a given wording means. "Yeah, I houseruled my Bolters to be S5 AP1 today" is very creative but not exactly the sort of thing you want to play against, and to be honest most people are _terrible_ at writing rules because very, very small things can make a very big difference. If it's you and three friends hanging out and having a good time, yeah, you can fly by the seat of your pants, but not all games are that casual or are between close acquaintences.
  • eldargal · 1 month ago
Before we make any judgements over whether the US or Europe should have multiple Games Days, it would be good to see some attendence figures. I have heard, and I have no way of verifying this, that attendence at EU Games Days is much higher than that of US Games Days. IF this is true, it makes sense for GW to keep multile events in Europe while scaling back the US event calender.
  • Sarah M. · 1 month ago
Maybe if GW put as much effort into their events in North America as they do in Europe then their attendance figure would be better. The quality of the events has been going down each year.
  • eldargal · 1 month ago
I agree, and they have a better chance of doing that with one event that spreading their resources over several. In all honesty I think they should stick to one GD per geographical zone and focus on high profile attendences at events organised by others (Bolscon, Adepticon, even things like Comicon and PAX.
  • toolman · 1 month ago
When I got back into the hobby and went to my first GD back in 04, Chicago's gamesday had a higher attendance than Baltimore, and rivaled the Paris GD's numbers. The next year, when Chicago was the only GT on the gamesday circuit, they sold out of Tournament tickets in record time. And the year after that showed great numbers as well.

Good friend of mine used to manage the St. Louis GW store (That GW closed, even though it was profitable, as a part of it's restructuring plan) I've got good numbers.

Last year? Last year the GD was a pitiful support of the fanbase. I remember there used to be some awesome seminars, trivia, and guest speakers. Last year? I remember the easel board announcing the seminars had sharpie through each one, and just had "new product seminar" written into each time slot. and the seminar was 20 minutes, and it blew. They dissappointed alot of people last year, and they wonder why this year's attendance was poor???

    Seriously???

And why, pray tell did all this happen... Hmm... Well, didn't they get rid of their US community staff? You know, the folks that put the time and effort into making the events fun and worth it?

    Yup
  • Terran_Forge · 1 month ago
Damn, now I REALLY have to choose whether or not to go to Games Day or BoLScon. Need to work on the whole "poor unemployed college student" thing too as that might help with my decision (crosses fingers for both).
  • Bigred · 1 month ago
    No worries Terran Forge,

BoLScon 2010 will be announcing dates in the near future, and the new GD won't be a scheduling issue.
  • toolman · 1 month ago
Bigred, it's good to hear that the dates won't conflict...

though to be honest, I don't think that you would have had any problems even if they did. GW has seriously turned alot of the NA fanbase off of GamesDays during this year and last year's sad showings, and now their one and only GD is going to be in Baltimore? Wow... smooth. heck, you'd think that if they were going to only have one, they'd put it in a more central location like Chicago so that travel expenses are more fair for the masses rather than their staffers. How many GamesDay events are held in Europe alone? and how many US STATES are larger than one of their countries??? ANd that doesn't even being to take into account Canada.

I seriously wonder sometimes where their sales mass a higher profit, NA or EU... and are they marketing themselves properly to the right marketshare?

As of right now? I'm heading to Adepticon in April, already asked for the days off at work, and as soon as your dates are posted, I'll be turning in my PTO sheet for your dates. Southwest flies to Austin from St. Louis :)

    Long story short....

40k is a game based on house rules and mutual fun.

Planet Strike is just one giant house rule game. Just like any other expansion.

The fact that people require GW to house rule a house rule based game is rather pathetic.

You guys know the FAQS are not official first off all right? Only Erratas are.

Second, the FAQs GW gaets are usually house rules out sourced to gaming groups that happen to know a codex's designer? This has been the case for every FAQ in the past 3 years. There is a Yahoo group for a circle of people who submit questions to GW. Just regullar non employee hobbyists like you and me.
  • abusepuppy · 1 month ago
    >You guys know the FAQs are not official first off right?
I'm pretty sure that basically everyone who runs tournaments or plays in any meaningful way will disagree with you on this one.
  • BuFFo · 1 month ago
You need to read GW's Shrine of Knowledge first dude.

And guess what Tourney FAQs are? House rules.

    You'll learn.
  • abusepuppy · 1 month ago
When a man runs up to you and screams "I'M NOT CRAZY!!!" at the top of his lungs while clawing desperately at his eyes, do you believe him?

Sometimes people say things because they know you're going to assume the opposite- and then you do anyways, despite what they've said. GW's pronouncements, no matter what they put in the fine print, have an level of authority to them that amateur FAQs and tourney judges never will. It's simply how things are.
  • VonKoeder · 1 month ago
That is a lame excuse for a company providing a product.

If they should have an easy to find link on the top web page of there site to collect this kind of information about there products and then compile answers that are given regular updates from again an easy to find link on the top web page of there site.

This has lazy written all over it.
  • BuFFo · 1 month ago
    Lazy?

The product GW sells is a HOBBY, not a tourney minded game.

The game for nearly 3 decades has ALWAYS been about the friendly group setting, making your own rules, creating your own models with conversions, period.

No offense, but you are the exact type of person I am referring to in my post.
  • Big J · 1 month ago
A products consumer determines it's use, not it's supplier.
  • VonKoeder · 1 month ago
I have never played in a tournament and have no intention to. I do enjoy knowing how the game is meant to work by the intent of the designers. My interest goes beyond the little inbred gaming ideas of my group. I understand some people worlds are not that big and I don't fault them for that. What I propose is that the effort and resources needed to expand past that tiny little mentality is minimal. Lazy might not be the word as it denotes acknowledgment there is an issue. Perhaps ignorance or maybe carelessness is more appropriate.

There are plenty of people who are interested in playing competitive 40K; they're the ones that go to tournaments.

Hobbying is one aspect of the game; tactical gamesmanship is another, and one that GW has long ignored, and that has hurt them a lot. Magic: the Gathering wasn't intended to be a competitive game, either, but the company saw that, in doing so, they could make a lot of money and expand their audience, and went with it. GW's stubborn refusal to make anything resembling a decent FAQ or errata or try to have any kind of tournament system has, in my opinion, been a major detriment to the game as a whole.

Why are so many people talking about the dumb FAQ, and so few outraged about the ONE GAMESDAY. I mean seriously, i give gamesworkshop the benefit of the doubt for pretty much eveything they do that most people get mad about, but to me this one gamesday is saying that they don't care about the majority of their customers from the states, and they don't care diddly 'squat' about their Canadian customers, which i happen to be one of. SCREW YOU GAMESWORKSHOP!!!
  • Horn · 1 month ago
Maybe we're not all based in North America, ergo we don't give a toss about that part of the blog :)
  • eldargal · 1 month ago
But everyone just whines about GD anyway. GW listens and says "Ok. we will focus on doing one good one instead". Result, everyone whines.
Maybe if this GD goes well they will expand the event calender.

Oh, and also? There is a recession on and people are spending less on luxury goods, we should be damned grateful GW is doing as well as it is and isn't cost cutting even more.
  • festablo · 1 month ago

Canadians are getting the royal screw job here... They have closed the Canadian mail order (everything gets shipped out of the states), cancelled the Canadian WD (and stopped sending it to Chapters), charge us way more than the exchange rate, and now they cancel the CDN GD. Colour me upset.
  • mightymconeshot · 1 month ago
at least you guys got one last year. stupid GW stopping LA games day. this really sucks for those that live on the west coast . for canadians i am sorry. that really blows.
  • Sien_Creis · 1 month ago
I think its pretty refreshing actually. When was the last time you saw any GW rules publication only needing 1 errata and 1 FAQ? I think that shows an impressive improvement in GW rules writing.
  • RevDoom · 1 month ago
It all comes down to two things, ether you are into the hobby for yourself and the price and business decision GW does matter for nothing. Because you will keep on buying their items for the love of the hobby and the universe they have created. Then there is the other side of the coin. That by being in this hobby or buying their products they owe you something more and should as a business react to every little whim that the consumer wants. If you are a member of the first group then complaining is kind of pointless, as you will continue to buy their product. If you are a member of the second group then life is one big disappointment for you because no business does this. The problem with any hobby type business is it starts about the customers or players but once profit starts happening and investors get involved it becomes about money and the players or customers voice is no longer heard. Want to get their attention become a major shareholder and then they have to listen. Until then they will do what every keeps the books running in black ink. Just enjoy the hobby or move on to something else that is the two choices.

only one GD US? sucks for them.
  • Steve · 1 month ago
Disappointed by a single Games Day. I wanted to make Chicago this year, but it didn't happen. I've already started saving up for next year and I'm surprising myself with the amount I've got squirreled away already, so it was looking like I could do Chicago next in grand style (assuming my rate of savings up to that point remained constant).

But now only one? In Baltimore, to boot? Ugh. Not sure how airfare will nuke my ability to attend. I wish they'd said what the actual venue was going to be in the announcement. The Baltimore Convention Center is the obvious choice, but I don't see GD on the BCC's calendar of events so I can't start pricing out hotels yet.
  • pad_uk · 1 month ago
I'm really no surprised to hear that the quality of US Games Days has been declining. I went to the UK Games Day this year, and it was no where near as good as it used to be. I'm not sure if the attendance figures were up or down, it seemed to have a reasonably crowd, but there really was very little there compared to previous Games Days I have been to. And the cost of a ticket - £30!!!! It's outrageous, and I certainly wont be going back for a while.

What the Hell, No games day in Canada.

We are a relatively small club in the Toronto Area, but we always contribute big to gamesday. bringing in 2 tables, and competing in costume contests, banner contests and golden demon

what are we supposed to do? I don't think we can afford to go all the way to God Damned Maryland (no offense to those who might live there)
