REAL WORLD: Bolters are Real!
: )
I'm not implying anything! Just saying.
:D
I think hosting only one North American GD shows a lack of respect from GW towards their fans/gamers/buyers. One day in each North American country of fan appreciation, one day for gamers to interact with other gamers to share ideas, battle and learn new stuff is apparently too much for GW to handle. This is serious bull.
Guess who won't be making a table this year and guess who's bad-ass female commissar costume is going in the garbage.
Which probably means we Canadians should just organize our own Games Day and tell GW to go flog itself.
And I second the vote for not throwing away the costume.... instead, post pictures!
Pathetic.
Nothing can stop House rules. Tournament or the living room, no one will burst in and order your to follow the codex. But to rely on house rules? To use their existence as reasoning for a lack of errata, balance, what have you? THAT is what is pathetic in my opinion.
Calling anybody that doesn't agree with you pathetic: very very pathetic.
"We have received input from hobbyists, clubs, and attending parents as well as from many parts of our own business on things that need to change or improve to make your Games Day experience a truly memorable one."
So instead we are going to have 1 that 90% of you CANT make it to. Smooth GW... How about one games day Europe too? Bet that wouldn't fly would it? To me looks like cost cutting. Almost surprised there wasnt also an announcement about raising NA prices to pay for it...
I don't think the Quality is dropping. However, the Global Economy is in the PITS. That may have to do with cutting Very EXPENSIVE events.
THANKS GAMES WORKSHOP!! MAY I HAVE ANOTHER?!
And marketing fail. What, did they ask three asshats in a Baltimore GW where they wanted the GD this year?
I know that the recent Games Days have gone down hill for a variety of reasons. I fail to see how reducing the number of people that can attend the event will make the event "amazing".
A single Games Day event works fine for smaller geographic locations such as Paris, England, and Italy. One can drive clear across all of those countries in a day or less and fly across them for relatively cheap. One can't exactly drive from Los Angeles to Baltimore in a day and flying cross-country costs almost as much as flying overseas these days.
And as for complaints about the cost of flying. I just checked Priceline.com for round trip tickets from LAX to Baltimore MD (8/20/2010-8/22/2010) and the price ranged from $250 with layovers to just under $400 for non-stop. If I lived in LA and wanted to go to games day, I'd be saving up for that plane ticket as fast as possible. So quit whining, make a plan, and go to GD2010.
Good job guys!
"If you host it, they will come."
the problem is that they AREN'T hosting it anymore, ONE GD for all of North America is a joke. As a result I can say that I personally wont be going, and I think that the majority of Canadians will feel the same. I think Canadian sales are going to suffer because of this.
Step 2: Wait at least three months past the release of the book, so everyone has had plenty of time to argue endlessly over every iota of rules and entrench themselves into whatever bizarre interpretation of the rules they have decided upon.
Step 3: Ignore every major rules dispute in the community at large.
Step 4: Find one drooling incompetent who doesn't know how to even pronounce the word "space marine," much less play the game. Ask him if he has any questions.
Step 5: Put out a FAQ with Q/A pairs like "Q: Can I take a cover save against line of sight? My Demolisher looks to be smaller than it should be! A: No; the assault rules are only used during the assault phase, so it's just going to have to deal with the consequences of being a tank!"
Note that at no point during the process does "profit" enter into the equation.
Instead they NEED GW to house rule a house rule based game themselves.
People have no imagination. Haven't since 3rd edition.
GW, as an ostensibly-neutral third party and creator of the game, has an authority that individual players or playgroups lack.
Or would you be just as likely to go to jail because Joe Street told you to as if a policeman did?
If you bother to read the Shrine of Knowledge, it specifically says, by GW itself, that FAQS are no more an authority than house rules your friends make up.
And this is my point... People require GW to hold their hands in this 'hobby'.
Its disgusting.
Hell, son, if you're such a go-getter why don't you write up your own system of rules and popularize it across three continents? No one's telling you how to play.
As it so happens, the rest of us, when we buy what is ostensibly a system of rules for a game, like it when those rules are reasonably complete and well-written. Saying "well you can just make the rest up as you go along!" means nothing because I could do that anyways, so why are we paying US$75+ for this if it's gonna get tossed out the window on a whim?
aL also raises a very good point: if you're playing with a bunch of strangers, you want a common ground you can all agree on. You should not have to spend half an hour hashing out "Okay, so how do _you_ guys play Biovores? Alright, what about..."
You seem to equate wanting a set of official rules with being some sort of baby-faced loser who is terrified to do anything on their own, when in reality it's much more of an issue of not wanting to spend an hour arguing with someone over what a given wording means. "Yeah, I houseruled my Bolters to be S5 AP1 today" is very creative but not exactly the sort of thing you want to play against, and to be honest most people are _terrible_ at writing rules because very, very small things can make a very big difference. If it's you and three friends hanging out and having a good time, yeah, you can fly by the seat of your pants, but not all games are that casual or are between close acquaintences.
Good friend of mine used to manage the St. Louis GW store (That GW closed, even though it was profitable, as a part of it's restructuring plan) I've got good numbers.
Last year? Last year the GD was a pitiful support of the fanbase. I remember there used to be some awesome seminars, trivia, and guest speakers. Last year? I remember the easel board announcing the seminars had sharpie through each one, and just had "new product seminar" written into each time slot. and the seminar was 20 minutes, and it blew. They dissappointed alot of people last year, and they wonder why this year's attendance was poor???
Seriously???
And why, pray tell did all this happen... Hmm... Well, didn't they get rid of their US community staff? You know, the folks that put the time and effort into making the events fun and worth it?
Yup
BoLScon 2010 will be announcing dates in the near future, and the new GD won't be a scheduling issue.
though to be honest, I don't think that you would have had any problems even if they did. GW has seriously turned alot of the NA fanbase off of GamesDays during this year and last year's sad showings, and now their one and only GD is going to be in Baltimore? Wow... smooth. heck, you'd think that if they were going to only have one, they'd put it in a more central location like Chicago so that travel expenses are more fair for the masses rather than their staffers. How many GamesDay events are held in Europe alone? and how many US STATES are larger than one of their countries??? ANd that doesn't even being to take into account Canada.
I seriously wonder sometimes where their sales mass a higher profit, NA or EU... and are they marketing themselves properly to the right marketshare?
As of right now? I'm heading to Adepticon in April, already asked for the days off at work, and as soon as your dates are posted, I'll be turning in my PTO sheet for your dates. Southwest flies to Austin from St. Louis :)
YAY!!!
and ha ha
I am not a happy Canadian.
40k is a game based on house rules and mutual fun.
Planet Strike is just one giant house rule game. Just like any other expansion.
The fact that people require GW to house rule a house rule based game is rather pathetic.
You guys know the FAQS are not official first off all right? Only Erratas are.
Second, the FAQs GW gaets are usually house rules out sourced to gaming groups that happen to know a codex's designer? This has been the case for every FAQ in the past 3 years. There is a Yahoo group for a circle of people who submit questions to GW. Just regullar non employee hobbyists like you and me.
I'm pretty sure that basically everyone who runs tournaments or plays in any meaningful way will disagree with you on this one.
And guess what Tourney FAQs are? House rules.
You'll learn.
Sometimes people say things because they know you're going to assume the opposite- and then you do anyways, despite what they've said. GW's pronouncements, no matter what they put in the fine print, have an level of authority to them that amateur FAQs and tourney judges never will. It's simply how things are.
If they should have an easy to find link on the top web page of there site to collect this kind of information about there products and then compile answers that are given regular updates from again an easy to find link on the top web page of there site.
This has lazy written all over it.
The product GW sells is a HOBBY, not a tourney minded game.
The game for nearly 3 decades has ALWAYS been about the friendly group setting, making your own rules, creating your own models with conversions, period.
No offense, but you are the exact type of person I am referring to in my post.
Presentation of coherent thought FAIL
BuFFo WIN
Hobbying is one aspect of the game; tactical gamesmanship is another, and one that GW has long ignored, and that has hurt them a lot. Magic: the Gathering wasn't intended to be a competitive game, either, but the company saw that, in doing so, they could make a lot of money and expand their audience, and went with it. GW's stubborn refusal to make anything resembling a decent FAQ or errata or try to have any kind of tournament system has, in my opinion, been a major detriment to the game as a whole.
Maybe if this GD goes well they will expand the event calender.
Oh, and also? There is a recession on and people are spending less on luxury goods, we should be damned grateful GW is doing as well as it is and isn't cost cutting even more.
But now only one? In Baltimore, to boot? Ugh. Not sure how airfare will nuke my ability to attend. I wish they'd said what the actual venue was going to be in the announcement. The Baltimore Convention Center is the obvious choice, but I don't see GD on the BCC's calendar of events so I can't start pricing out hotels yet.
We are a relatively small club in the Toronto Area, but we always contribute big to gamesday. bringing in 2 tables, and competing in costume contests, banner contests and golden demon
what are we supposed to do? I don't think we can afford to go all the way to God Damned Maryland (no offense to those who might live there)
