40K RUMOR: Dark Eldar In The Can

REAL WORLD: Bolters are Real!
Unfortunately in 3 edition, deep striking was much more brutal. As my friends waves of Raiders and Ravagers arrived, some rolled double 1's *death* and some unluckily scattered off the table. *death* The few that remained on the table scattered into difficult terrain, promptly rolled a 1 for dangerous terrain and crashed.
One of those Raiders that crashed onto the tabletop was the Archon and his retinue of Incubi. Unfortunately my friend continued his trend of rolling poorly and most of the incubi in that unfortunate accident died. To add insult to injury even the Archon was wounded in the crash and rolled a 1 for his shadow field save *fizzle... pop!*
We declared the game over as my army unfolded lawn chairs to watch the Dark Eldar invasion break apart in the atmosphere.
Just seemed like the funniest thing at the time.
That was always my favorite matchup in the jungle, Catachan vs. Nids.
What I really miss is being able to use my 30 plus laspistol/ccw guardsmen. It took so long to scrounge that many pistol bits.
In another game he killed a GUO, the combat had dragged on for about three turns and the only wounds that got caused where by Bob.
He has also managed to kill Calagar, Eldrad and Kharn. He is currently waiting to be incased in Mega Armour to led his very own ork horde.
And then there is one where a Space Hulk (1st edition) genestealer hybrid uses lightning arc to kill every marine apart from two on the board on turn two. Then the hybrid shoots one of the remaining with a las pistol and kills the marine. Leaving the librarian to complete the mission by himself. Which he does, and the kill counter for him went into the hundreds before we ran out of paper to record them. Somehow the librarian closed off all the access points and won the game.
But really, the hybrid almost won the game single handed for the stealers. If only he rolled better and got the librarian with the lightning arc!
My friend had the last 2 members of his Cadian squad assault my last 2 Firewarriors. My Firewarriors not only survived, but killed one Cadian and sent the last running for his mommy without taking a single wound.
My friend once shot at one of my terminator squads with his assault squad with plasma pistols and stuff. None of them did anything. Then he shot with a bolt pistol and killed one of my terminators. We were both like "What just happened?"
I also had a SM seargent with a power ax and bolt pistol, a marine with a meltagun, and a regular marine in close combat with an almost full forced tactical squad. They managed to chop their way clear after about 3 turns, killing every one of my friends marines and not one of them dying. Now whenever I play with them I give them special treatment on account of that game.
In general, in every game I play in, I will get some squads that are killed down to 2-3 and then not take a single more wound. My units just refuse to be wiped out!
I have also charged a Necron Lord with a Herald of Khorne on a chariot. I hit all 5 of his attacks and only needed a 2+ to deliver the final wound that would kill him... I rolled 5 1's, yelled "Yahtzee!" and congratulated my opponent for his incredible luck.
Against my dark eldar, he made an near impossible jump to get onto a ledge where I had a sniper squad. There was barely any room to get onto the ledge and the model kept teetering, so I said he could roll a d6. On a 6 he nailed the landing and was perched on the edge of the broken wall somehow and could shoot and assault as usual next turn. On a 1 he missed and knocked Mephiston off HIS ledge (Mephiston having landed on the next ledge over, out of range, but directly under Neo's flightpath). Any other result and Neo got to spend the turn hanging on by his fingertips and trying to get his footing. No shooting or assault.
He rolled a 6. Proceeded to demolish the squad over the next two turns. Then flew over to the next ledge and kick my archon in the head on the way down, as my archon was dragging the unconscious Mephiston back to Comorragh.
"Ha ha" I said as he moved about 5 inches away, "you know what rapid fire means don't you?"
My 12 Fire Warriors opened up, rapid firing their little blue hearts out, cutting the Foul Dark Eldar squad down to a single man.
I stayed behind my fortified gun position, believing that I could easily defend against one measly Dark Eldar, who had to climb the hill and assault me over a plascrete wall topped with razor wire.
How very wrong I was.
The Dark Eldar made it into combat, the Fire Warriors all attacked first, but unfortunately scored no wounds on the Eldar, who in turn cut down one of my Tau.
Then, my Fire Warriors failed their break test for losing the combat and proceeded to flee.
This wasn't enough for the Dark Eldar, who vaulted the razor wire and chased down my Tau, killing every last one of them...
Stupid sweeping advance...
You can't run down a unit that is bigger than yours- the combat just starts again next turn
The Champion with his 4 Lightning Claw attacks and the Raptor rained down blow after blow on the Horror, but it survived to strike back, hit on a 5, wound on a 6, Raptor fails his save, the Champion rolls 11 on his Ld check, and then a 1+4 to see if he gets away to be run down by the lone Horror who clearly had Tzeentch smile knowingly about his flagrant breach of the laws of probability. A Greater Daemon in the making methinks.
(note we where playing with the old ork codex as the new one wasn't out at the time)
(also we painted blood splatters on to the church so we would never forget)
My Lemartes joined 5 assault marines but my Assault marines were dead before getting into CC. So I charged my Lemartes into a squad of Fire Warriors (10 strong with some gun drones), after 2 turns, my Lemartes was down to one wound and the FW squad was down to 1 drone. I striked first and failed to hit, drone strike back, scored one wound and of course, I failed the save..... so for the rest of the game, I was watching this drone floating around with proud.
If you kill the vehicle the drones vanish?
Cause I've had some REALLY nasty armies turn up with about 10 drones detaching from Piranha's and larger tanks to charge on the last turn and hold up objectives by contesting. They're just annoying cause they're usually good enough to last out one round of combat against a small squad that's holding an objective. While I've got anti-tank still available to take down the vehicles, I'd like to be able to kill 2 birds with one stone rather than charging my anti-tank unit in on some drones to try and win me the combat on the last turn of the game.
The only thing that puzzles me is that the fluff states that the drone controller is in the vehicle... o.O
Mathhammer without taking into account, who attacked first i.e. attacking resolved at the same time:
9 unupgraded hormas kill statistically 1,5 Marines.
4 Marines with an E-Sword-Sarge kill 2,11 Hormas.
As you see, your example is not far away from what statistics say us.
The only reason I am beating this dead horse is because I feel you have missed the point of the post and possibly the game as a whole.
I miss those combats.
2. Tau vs Ulthwe Strike Force. Avatar charges 8 Firewarriors. Avatar dies.
The funny thing was that this was the same game... those poor, poor Eldar. :D
That he possessed such burning hatred for bikes earned him the title of 'The Pedestrian'.
With the move to the 5th edition IG 'dex I made him sergeant of a squad of penal legionnaires. These legionnaires outflanked behind a Tau battlesuit command squad, decisively won the assault, then chased them all down when they fled.
But he did not break! His faith in the emperor was strong and even in the face of an attacking army of Ultramarines led by Sicarius, he stayed his ground.
After weaving their way through my own salvo of orbital bombardments (a fun way to spend my 6 heavy choices for sure), a squad of terminators made it to my one lone stormtrooper and engaged him in assault, and after a round of brutal combat, he still stood! Next round, Sicarius himself and his retinue joined the fray, and yet still, this lone valiant trooper refused to go down.
Eventually, the round after that, he succumbed, but he had singlehandedly managed to keep two squads of terminators and Sicarius tied up for quite a few rounds, allowing me to systematically pick apart the rest of the attacking army, and the terminators were then grouped up nicely for the missile silo (we were using a stand in for one of those fortresses) and battle cannon to violate them. My own terminators, accompanied by a Grand Master, then swarmed out of their bastions and overwhelmed the survivors, securing victory for the defenders, wiping out the attacking force down to the last man. It was one hell of a victory :)
After being amazed, amused and (in my opponent's case) somewhat distrought once again, there was nothinge sle tod o but charge the next group of infantry - and do it again!!
Unfortunately, the heroic swarm of bugs were now in the open and were promptly flamed to oblivion. However, a lone base of Scarabs obliterating two regular and one Heavy Weapon squad of guard made for a memorable game (and lone Scarab Swarm bases have never been ignored by that opponent since).
I'm playin Necrons on this game, and my Herald of Ressurrection had raised a group of 2 Tomb Spyders and 13 Scarab Swarms near the Termies the round before. Needless to say, the Spyders and Scarbs killed all but one of Terminators in two rounds of combat.
The last Termie was killed by an allied Baneblade shot that scattered off my Pylon.
I play with IG versus GK (loads of terminators). I was asked not to bring SC (opponent was a novice) and agreed.
My army was a bit static at the center with mobile groups spread at flanks to contest objectives, GK player went for deep striking.
Turn 2, all of his goodness(inclding a callidus) becomes available and comes nicely, crushing an entire platoon. The only part left of it is a squishy mortar squad at the open and in the charge range of callidus, who shot his shredder at the unit nearby and incinerated it completely.
Well, blood-hungry asassin charges, cause 1 wound and get clubbed to bloody death with the nice, sturdy, imperial mortars.
-"comissar will shoot us dead if we lose these weapons!"
I still fondly remember a game involving a 3rd ed tooled up Khorne Lord and my mortar squad having a quiet tete-a-tete behind some trees.
Net result: Dead Lord.
Course, my friend got his revenge some time later, when, during a megabattle alongside Orks against me and another Guard player, we wiped out his Terminator squad all bar the Champ. Now, again, he'd decided to spend 70 odd points on tolling up this 1 wound champion. "Ahha!" Says I, "an easy kill."
I've had to subsequently blank the shame from my memory, but the champion then ran the length of the board, taking fire from around 3k of Imperial Guard, and shrugging it all off, while chirpily butchering his way through our combined army.
The battle is nearing the end, and it comes to those favourite of moments, the battle of the leaders. My Hive tyrant swoops down and rushes into his ork warboss. For two turns, his ork warboss passes about 8 invulnerable saves on 6's, whilst I fail 2+ armour saves against his big choppa, and he came out fully intact.
On it rushes.
Your heavy gun speaks again, close but no blood. Damn!
Now its nearly on top of you. You must stop it before it reaches the crucial artillery, not to mention your own miserable skin. Time to heat up the plasma. Malloney takes careful aim ZAP ZAP! The carnifex screams in pain, but where did Malloney go? Not enough - the monsterous beast comes crashing through the pitiful cover your team had been firing from.
"Fix bayonets!" screams Sgt. Murphy. (Yea, right.)
With teeth clenched, (and eyes closed) everyone prepares to meet the Emperor with rifles extened - and the brute manages to impale itself on Shannon's pig sticker! Holy Saints Preserve Us!
"Hey guys, fresh meat!"
The same IG team also survived two apocalyptic barrages during the game so very lucky indeed.
Round 1:
Marines - 10 man Vanguard Vet Squad, LC/SS, Deep Strike/Heroic Intervention (Dead On), Assault 50 Man Guard Squad, 5PW Sergeants and Commisar. Take 5 PWeap wounds 15 bayonet wounds, Total saves made 1 PWeap wound 2 Bayonet Wounds. Kill 5 guardsmen. Fail Stubborn Leadership 9. Run away, Caught, Die from ATSKNF.
My dice hate me :(
IG -
1. My Shas'O, back in 4th, successfully dealt two wounds to a Chaplain with Artificier Armour in a SINGLE combat round. The opponent then gave up.
2. Again, he managed to kill a charging Lictor UNSCRATCHED in one round.
3. Back in 4th his kills includes a single-wound DP. Also in 5th he's able to withstand attacks from Nurglings for a few round and SINGLE-HANDEDLY reduces a DP to a single wound before being killed.
4. My Stelathsuits managed to hold some Wyches for 3 rounds of combat (and keep outnumbering them) before Archon+Incubi came in and crushed everything.
5. My Kroot killed a charging Talos and again, unscratched.
Pvt. O'Neal reports sighting a huge Tyranid bio-creature, a Carnifex, charging in their direction.
Sgt. Murphy orders their only viable weapon at this range, a lascannon, to open fire.
SCORE! Crap! It only wounds the damn thing!
On it rushes with fury in its eye.
The heavy gun speaks again. Close, but no blood. Things are starting to look pretty bleak.
Now the loathsome creature is nearly on top of them.
The whole squad opens up with all available weapons. Lasguns only seem to infuriate the foul thing, but the lascannon scores again. Its time for Malloney to open up with his pet plasma gun - ZAP ZAP! The vile bio-creature lets out a mind numbing scream, but crashed onward. (Where did Malloney go?)
"Fix bayonets!" screams Sgt. Murphy. (Yeah, right)
With clenched teeth (and eyes closed) the squad prepares their souls to meet the Emperor as the horror crashed through the pitiful barricade the squad is firing over.
Then . . . the damn thing manages to impale itself on Shannon's rusty pig sticker!
Saints Preserve Us.
"Hey guys - fresh meat!"
Love that, very funny!
I had a few cityfight games in which my ONLY casualties were those unfortunate souls lucky enough to be "promoted" to plasma duty.
In warhammer we were playing a three way giant battle undead, vs DE, VS High Elves & Wood Elves. In the first turn Tyrion gets charged by harpies, he flees and is run down. The resulting leadership tests for losing the army general force the ENTIRE elf army to fail and flee the battlefield.
And wow dvastator failing 11 saves of 3+ on 2d6 is serious bad luck. How many hits were needed for that?
Also Ive had Gretchin take out way too many Terminators
But the real thing I saw is how much those 5th ed. CC rules s**k a**.
My necron Warriors wiped out big units of tyranid warriors and hormagaunts because of the fearless kills you bad rule.
I think GW should put a lot more into rule testing so we would have more fun assault stories then frustrating ridiculousness of today.
And then there's Mr. "Knock Knock?", Captain Cortez - rolling four ones when trying to hit a Rhino. WITH A POWER FIST.
Also had a squad of Imps that took down 3 squads of Firewarriors and squad of Stealth suits all in hand to hand....The Sgt and plasma gunner surviving and looking for a promotion...
Ahriman was fighting three tyranid warriors and it was my turn. I cast gift of chaos three times and "blorp" three spawn popped up and simultaneously beat down the hive tyrant near by with a whopping 19 attack on the charge (5,5,6 + charge)!!
Recently it was 3 TH/SS termies against 5 deathwing and a librarian. Deathwng wiffed and my termies killed the librarian and 2 termies. No retreat? 4 ones...
A chaos rhino tank shocked (yes, its not in the assault phase but just wait) a group of pathfinders with a farseer in some woods and they broke and fled 5 inches. Next turn they couldn't rally and kept falling back and was then escorted by that lovely rhino back to their craftworld.
Turn one, i had two units on the board (ironclad and drop pod, and the dp shot and killed a big mek with it's storm bolter). The two subjugators were on a flank attacking one of my ally's isolated positions. My dreadnought was supposed to be a speed bump. He was charged, attacked first
2 penetrating hits.
I rolled a 5 and 6 for damage, rolled again for a chain reaction, and got a 5. I rolled for an explosion and got a 6. The 9" explosion failed to do anything to my ironclad, but took off a damage point from the other subjugator, kill 5 nob bikers, and dozens of assorted enemy grunts. Next turn, my ironclad charged the other subjugator and chopped it down to.
He survived the game, and now sports two super heavy kill markings :)
Archon slayed 5 grots but the the remaining 7 attacks causes 3 wounds which all roll up as 1's!!!!
My Farseer killed a Callidus Assasin in turn 2, after it had assaulted him in turn 1, without loosing a single life.
And my 5 Pathfinders killed a Tyranid Liktor after 2 turns, again without loosing a single man. 5+ save may live forever.
And at last the best one: Olg IG against Tau in a turnament. My Storm troopers had killed a Tank, and then only my Veteran Sergeant with powerweapon survived the shooting. My oponend thought: oh well lets charge him with 2 colossus so I get all the victory pionts! He made 2 wounds with the drones I saved them, I killed one drone, he made 2 wounds with the colossus, I saved them. He failed moral check, lost initiative roll, I had killed 200 victory points^^
With those 200 points I won the game. The VetSergeant made it into my hall of glory.
5th ed. Wolf Lord with terminator armor, storm shield, wolf tooth necklance, and thunder hammer charges in. He has two TH/SS/WTN/TDA wolf guard with him, the other members of the retinue having died to shooting after their transport was destroyed. They managed to get into base to base with two full squads of Fire Warriors. The Fire Warriors strike first, killing the two Wolf Guard. The Wolf Lord proceeds to kill the remaining two squads, wiping one out to the last man and forcing the other to flee.
my friend has a Chaos Lord named "Lord Invincible" its fair to sa he got his name because he never failed his bionics test!! (3rd/4th ed)
he'd always get up the next turn, and in a few games, he repeatedly got back up, over and over and over. in one game he was killed turn 1 and proceeded to last till turn 6!!
in my last game i played, a 20man conscript squad followed by a Lord Commissar were assaulted by some seriously nasty dark eldar guys, and some flash gitz. all the conscripts dead, and the Lord, fails just 1 of his 5 or so allocated saves.
because he is stubborn, he holds both those squads in place until the next turn when he died...
Now over many games they have managed to kill everything from Tactical Squads to tanks, from Monstrous Creatures to very far away Scouts lurking in cover- in fact there has never been a game were they haven't killed way more than their points cost- to me they are the ultimate in firepower- all purpose and devastating... I dreaded the day they would one day find themselves in combat.
Then came the Apocalypse game that they did. From Reserve, they poured onto the table, reinforcing my gun line where it was weakest. Their target was a unit of Stealers with a Broodlord, so Vengeance rounds it was. Unfortunately, there was also a Hive Tyrant to their left, charging towards my Terminators. And my Annihilator had decided to leave it with one Wound, despite it only having two left before that. Screw it, I thought to myself, the Sternguard have 1 Combi Melta, that might work. And to my surprise, it did! The Tyrant was killed.
Unfortunately, that left the Stealers and Broodlord to mince my Sternguard. A worthy sacrifice I thought, as they charged into me the next turn. But for three whole combat rounds, the Stealers didn't rend at all, despite their being eight of them, and the Broodlord failed to Wound at all. And in the fourth round? My Power Weapon armed Sergeant killed two Stealers, and eventually the Sternguard won the combat! It seems that firepower isn't all they are good for.
1. Against the Tau. A bunch of kroot where advancing on his oblierators, the Daemon Prince swoops in to take care of them. 6 turns later the daemon prince is still in combat with them. He doesn't die but it's pretty embrassing.
2. Against Space Marines. He charges a 2 wound bare bones chaplin, 2 turns later he's dead.
3. Vs Space Marines. Got in a fight against 10 devastators in cover got clubbed to death by lascannons.
4. Teamed up with a Changer of Ways and 10 blood letters in order to kill my Chapter Master and a Chaplin. They killed the Blood Letters, then the CoW and then the DP.
He never used the DP again.
I had a similar incident - my lone Gaunt (with 1 attack) killed a Terminator Sergeant in close combat - me and my friends just stood and stared for like 5 whole minutes.
In my very fist game of necromunda a juve was charged by 6 redempionists including a deacon and zealot.
He proceeds to kill all of them in 1 combat..
I also had a friend of mine tell me about a game where his chaos sorcerer managed to turn the decievers necro-dermis into a chaos spawn!! he then made a chaos spawn model using deciever parts as the sorcerer lords 'pet'
I had a game where a sorceror of mine turned Inquisitor Codiaz into a spawn, which then promptly destroyed the 3 GK Termies next to him before dying to 3 Deathcult assasins
This story was slightly better than when I had a whole squad of fire warriors charged by 3 sword brethren Black Templar. I went from 12 to 4 models in an instant, and only could throw back 4 attacks and caused 3 wounds. The whole room went silent when he rolled three ones for his armour saves.
Ridiculous luck as Tau usually are horrid in close combat.
Orks vs. 5ed IG
30 Boyz devestated on the 1st turn by massed fire. 10 grots and a runtherd shooting managed to mow down Creed, Kell and a tooled up command squad. Something like 400pts I think - from a unit which cost 45!
Of course I also had 2 terminators die to 15 Grotz...
Wez kickt me red trukk in da gear "red go fasta" and charge at dat umie "sm predator" gunwaggon that was taking pockshots at us.
me boys and i took it apart good and propper but wef got caught em the open whear em umis waz shooting at us so we got in what waz left of the waggon and let em have it wit our shootas harhar.
that and thers the story wear my sniper scout team heald up a brood of geensteelers off for 3 turns.
i just found the story of my trukker boys taking down a pread and using it as a bunker funnyer
This was turn two... and every single assault phase after that, it was the 'Fex smoking a scout or two and sarge poking back and scoring a wound or coming close.
Turn 5 started and it was down to Sarge and the Fex. CC comes and goes... Fex gets a wound. Fails to hit sarge in both CC rounds
Turn 6... Sarge goes first and scores a Wound... the final one as the Fex misses the save and dies.
4 full turns of CC and he survived.... thus he became dubbed "Brotha with a Knife." And not charged again by carnifex's
A few games later, he is now armed with a Thunder Hammer- which is now modeled on him. The squad gets charged by a Dread this time.... and after the Dread makes his swings, Vet Sarge Hamma swings- and destroys the Dread.
When my opponent squawks over it, I remind him I play WYSYWIG and even told him he had it.... After that game, that squad never got charged again by big things.
That was sweet!
First off back in 4th ed. I was very new to the game as was my friend, he played necrons and I was my black templars. I was running the emperors champ solo and charged into a 20 strong necron warrior squad. I killed 4 on the charge and saved all my wounds. He failed his moral, fell back got run down and then with my consolidate move, charged a second 20 man squad, wash rinse repeat til phase out.
Second story is in more recent 5th ed. When playing a tag team match against blood angels and CSM, my crusader squad with a chaplain and the emporors champ gets thrown into a mosh pit with-a squad of 2 oblitorators 10 CSM one with Power fist a squad of khorne berzerkers with a khorne lord with daemon weapon attached, dante attached to a 4 man death company, a furioso dread and a DEFILER! The emporors champ first challenged the khornate lord who, with the emperors watchful eye rolled a 1 for his daemon weapon-and got killed. The next round of combat dante is the next independant character so its 1 on 1 time. Dante hits 4 wounds 3- and the emperors champ saves all. Emporors champ hits 3 wounds 3 and kills dante. NEXT ROUND with just 4 crusaders and the emporors champ left, wipe out EVERYTHING exept the defiler and the now 1 armed furioso. Finally alone against impossible odds the emperors champion falls to the defiler. With dante and a Khorn chaos lord under his belt, the emperors champ stands as my most proud model of my collection.
Last weekend I played two on two (My Eldar and marines vs. Necron and Tau).
Turn three I opted for an assault against Necrons with my Seer council and rolled double one for my charge move, as the foe stood in difficult terrain. Not so uncommon one might say.
Next turn my trusted Seer council tried the same thing again and whammy double one on move in difficult terrain, followed by a single one for my run movement. Now I was three inch away and desperate to get an assault going, so I rolled once more and guess what, DUBBLE ONE!
Still I had a chance to remedy the situation with my Banshees, guess what they rolled, DUBBLE ONE!
Otherwise, the game was great, the only thing out of the ordinary was the Necron player’s ability to roll a ridicules amount of successful cover saves...
n hestan took a tooled up nob squad and warboss, an ard boys squad, snikrot and kommandos, and was finally taken out by a big boy squad, after his whole retinue was taken down. It was insane.
5 penetrations! Uh oh. They diced delicately praying to the C'tan for a wreck result. One six came up.
A mighty one inch explosion wounded each of them.
Three ones later: 123 points vs. a 35 point storm bolter.
No photocopies close, so no WBB.
A hard lesson after all these eons.
Anyways, my first opponent was Tau. I figured "Great! Marines have some of the best armor in the game, & they're combat monsters with Jump Packs...I should be able to take care of this if I can avoid getting hammered by their guns!" Hoo boy!
Within the span of the first two turns of the game, I had pretty much lost everything I had purchased for the army...My Devastator squad was down to a single Lascannon-weilding coward who kept failing his "Last Man Standing" test, running just out of weapons range in one turn, then coming back into range the next.
The big blow was my Commander & Command Squad...After they wiped out a Fire Warrior Squad, I swept them forward into the next Squad, when my opponent reminded me of a rule I didn't know about...the opponent can fire at a unit that Sweeps from one Combat to the next. He proceeded to obliterate my entire, 6-man, unwounded Command Squad with shots from the 2nd Fire Warrior Squad, the Crisis Squad, the Hammerhead & the Shas'O Commander.
All I had left of any consequence was a single 5-man Tac Squad (4, by that point), a 3-man Bike Squad, & my Jump-equipped Death Company (11-men strong, I think) & Death-Chaplain. Of course, my Power Fist & Meltagun-equipped Bikers failed in their assigned task to destroy the Hammerhead (damn Stealthsuits).
Anyways, with my Bikers tied up, & my Devastator running about like a chicken with his head cut off, my cheap little Tactical Squad & my free Death Company (with relatively inexpensive Chaplain) proceeded to mop the floor with a good three-quarters of the opposing buggers. The Marines acted as fire support, shooting their Missile Launcher & Plasma Gun into anything they could target, while the Forlorn Hope followed the Chaplain into battle, wiping out everything in arm's length.
I lost the game (my opponent wisely controlled or contested 3 of the board quarters, while I was focussed entirely on trying to wipe him out), but it was a LOT closer than it should've been, thanks to two cheap little units I threw in because they were mandatory.
Lesson learned...for my next game against Chaos Space Marines, I re-worked the entire army to be a LOT more balanced.
Course, as soon as combat was done, and tea and medals were being distributed, the Sergeant was killed by a cowardly sniper's bullet (Boooo! Hisss!)
So, in my turn I have the Commander (picture at this link: http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/51286-Command...) charge into the enemy Storm Troopers single-handed. Now the Commander has a power fist, so he's going to go last, but I take the risk of using it to ensure if I do get to attack that I definitely cause some wounds. The Commander manages to save what few wounds are caused against him, including amazingly making the 5+ refractor field save as needed against the enemy sergeant's power sword. My Commander then kills three or four enemy troopers. In the assault phase in my friend's turn, he manages to pull off the same stunt in nearly identical fashion.
By now me and my friend are both amazed because I usually can't make saving throws in anything approaching an average fashion, often missing really good saves like power armored saves and terminator saves on a regular basis often far beyond statistical average. But, having now made every 5+ save needed in two rounds of combat except perhaps one, the Commander is down to one wound but still alive and the assault continues into a third round in my next turn. Again, the remaining Stormtroopers go first, all three of them at this point, and the Commander makes every save required. He then finishes off the remaining Storm Troopers with his power fist. In three rounds of combat, the wounded Commander has eliminated ten foes while always striking last and only taking a single wound himself in the assault.
If you visit the link above with the picture of my Commander you'll see that he has a Lion cloak. He really earned his nom de guerre, "The Lion" after that battle!
Eversor Assassin Poping (when he dies) and killing Fuegan in Close combat. (and you thought the Pheonix lords where tough now)
Vet assault marines back in 2nd ed charging into swooping hawks outnumbering them 2 to 1 and getting WIPED OUT. Was awesome.
4th ed old IG codex my friend had a seargant with bionics that survived a melta round, 2 full combats with a dread, and then another melta round before claming an objective and winning the game. (He has been promoted since)
One space wolf scout pack, in a doubles tourney, took out 2 hammerheads, 10 devestators, 5 tactical marines, and like 30 some odd kroot before standing on an objective and surviving two full missle pods to win the game.
Baharrath (however it's spelled) 50+ IG in one game. Need I say more?
Oh I could go on for ages. I just realized... I've been playing way too long.

Of course, the Dire avengers were all lined up for Vulkan to twin linked heavy flamer them so they didn't survive the next turn...
What would you have to say about that?
What would you have to say about that?
1.Space Marine Chaplain charges a termagaunt: both die. My brother then took the model and painted "SuperGaunt" around the edge of the base.
2.Chaos Dreadnought charges a squad of gaunts, and fails to kill any for about 3 turns in a row.
3.Not a cc actually, but a lone scout took out a full health Tyranid Warrior with only his shotgun: "I keep this around for close encounters"*ka-chak**BOOM*
The best combats I've seen, though occurred in an apoc game. Myself and my ally both gave our Space Marine Captains a legionary relic. My captain and his honour guard then proceeded to carve his way through the following:
Scythed Heirodule
Genestealer squad
Several Zoanthropes
My buddy sliced up the following with his:
The other Scythed Heriodule
Several Warriors
A Carnifex
after finishing off the Genestealers, my other ally decided that the legionary relic was too powerful, and began trying to "accidentally" kill my Captain with his Battle Cannon. Interestingly enough, we ended up losing the game because the relic holders got killed, and mine also counted as an objective that we failed to hold.
Anyway chaos went frist they had a single landrider right in front of the Fortress and so moved it in to range then the shooting started the first shot of the frist apoc game the club had had hit and whit the best run of 6s iv seen killed the Fortress and did a lot of damage to the imperial line whit the explosion that followed.
But a if to show that the god of the dice can play fair when it came time for Abandon and his guard to join the fray by deepstrike his scattered off landing on a fleeing IG squad died instantly.
My partner throws his Farseer in combat with a Blood Thirster (Khorne) on the second turn of the game to try and slow it down on our far right flank, where there are only Guardians.
The Farseer “continues” to make his invulnerable saves (the Chaos player even insisted my friend use Chaos dice to make his rolls at one point) never able to wound the Greater Daemon, as we all maneuver our units to shoot the Daemon to pieces when the Farseer dies.
By turn four, everyone in the store was gathered around when it was time for my friend to roll his saves, all rooting for him, even his opponents (except the Chaos player).
Finally, on turn five the Chaos player, a tad discouraged and upset, throws his Daemon Prince and three CSM into the fray to “uncork” this stubborn Farseer, mistake, the Farseer kills the three CSM and makes all his saves again, and wins the combat.
The Chaos player quit the game, even though his side was winning and would have most assuredly won.
Known only two wars after his induction, Gonad the Barbarian, was a soldier of the truest mettle.
His first campaign occurred with out any grand displays of skills, it is even thought that he may have died fighting against the dark eldar back in 2nd edition.
Maybe through some near death experience or through some latent psychic ability to soak up combat tactics by merely watching and absorbing the skills of those around him, Gonad was born.
Campaign two occurred on a eldar claimed world. Gonad was sent as a forward platoon meant for nothing more than cannon fodder and a combat wall. To those around him Gonad was a mystery, still dressed in the same olive drab garbs of his new unit yet placed within a desert camo squad of guardsman. Many must have thought that should anyone be shot first it would have been him. After a few volleys from both sides, the sergeant lead an offensive against a recently titled wraith lord (3rd edition). The battle was lop sided from the get go. Completely underpowered all the platoon could hope to accomplish with there deaths was to lock up the monstrosity for a few rounds of combat while the Leman Russes delt with the jet bikes and vypers that were causing hell on its flanks. Through what is no less than a miracle, Gonad became the lone survivor of his squad and stood toe to toe with the Wraithlord for 4 turns. The efforts of Gonad were quickly noticed when his efforts effectively allowed for the mission to be successful. Gonad was found unconscious after turn 5, but was elevated to the rank of sgt.
Sgt. Gonad was loving his position as a squad leader during the 4th edition of his service. He had fought against numerous foes in uncountable battles and yet still managed to stay in the emperors service! He had yet to know that his true test was to come during this time. The Chaos scum of the universe had just received new powers and layouts and he was amongst the first to try and reign in the enemies progression into the emperor's realm. Sgt Gonad was in the midst of a great Chaos Space Marine invasion. Luckily for him the Leman Russes and Basilisks were doing a great job of ground and pound, and even the Hell Hounds were taking their tolls on the chaos scum. But, as it always goes, some things never are perfect. Gonads squad was about to open fire on a dreaded Deamon Prince when they were warped to an area right in front of the beast. The beast quickly took advantage of the squad who was stunned by the displacement. Half of the squad was wiped out immediately. If it had not been for the courage of Sgt. Gonad surly the squad would have been broken and cleared by a frenzied sweep of the Deamon Prince. Although Sgt. Gonad did not kill the beast he did by enough seconds for the squad of ogryns to bash their way to the warp spawn and fell it in the end of the engagement. Sgt. Gonad was not done though. The battle was over but the war was not yet won. Gonad set up position within the edges of a nearby forest and prepared for a charge of between 6 or 7 beserkers of Khorne. Through his diligent resourcefulness he was able to fight back with the crazed chaos marines for two turns. The squad, lead by Sgt. Gonad lasted for 2 of the longest turns he remembered. His men used every ounce of cover they were allowed to confound the enemies hits, and in return many of theirs hit home. The battle ended with 2 berserkers against a lone Gonad. Gonade made a run for it at the last minute. The emperor must have been protecting him that day. Just as he ran leaving the chaos marines standing in their tracks with murder on their hearts a shell fell out of the sky smiting them in the Emperor's wrath leaving Sgt. Gonad alive yet again.
It is the 5th season of Sgt. Gonads campaign. Although the fighting techniques have changed and the battalion he has been assigned to is equipped with better technology, Sgt. Gonads awaits for his unit to be completed. He will be dressed the same, in the Olive Drab uniform that he was given years ago. Sgt. Gonad will be seen as clear as day charging in front of the Forge World army of the Death Korps of Kreig. His foot steps will tremble small pebbles as he strides across the battlefield his lasgun will burn tiny pockmarks into the Emperor's foes. In the end Sgt. Gonad the Barbarian will claim his victory, in the end he will be seen as a hero worth his on place in the back of the codex's covers!
My son has a squad of Tau with EMP grenades who are *death* on Dreadnoughts. Venerables, Siege, Garden Variety, it just doesn't matter, they all die to this squad.
Then came the glorious day when Bjorn himself slammed into them. The big B butchered em all except for a single drone... which then proceeded to dodge Bjorn's enraged swipes for three combat phases. When the game ended they were still there, Bjorn whiffing and the drone buzzing around him like an angry hornet.
Then there's my Grot mob that...
(2nd edition) killed a charging Lictor in one round of close combat.
(4th edition) charged a squad of Necron Heavy Destroyers sitting an objective on the last turn. Killed two. Ran the remaining one off, and did the happy dance on the pile of grog barrels that were the objective. They're being converted to Cybergrots as a reward...
And finally...
(2nd edition) A tooled up Techmarine with a Storm Shield, Bionics, Plasma gun, Power Fist and Servo Arm was standing in the middle of a circular firing squad consisting of:
- One each close combat Inquisitor Lord (WS/BS 8!! with power armor, a Combimelta and power sword)
- One each Leman Russ
- One each Chimera
- Two squads of IG infantry with Plas/Las
As the honorable foe picked up hands full of dice, I winced. The dice hit the table with a thud... and when the smoke cleared, there he was, still on his feet. He charged the Chimera and blew it to pieces.
Next turn... more las/plas/battle cannon fun, he's staggering but still upright. This time he crashes into the Russ, immobilizes it and tears off a sponson.
By now the honorable opponent is getting a tad frustrated. The Inquisitor and one of the infantry squads charge into close combat. The IG do nothing, the inquisitor whiffs, and the Techmarine, going for gold, proceeds to tear off the I-Lord's head and drop kick it onto the Russ like a bloody hood ornament. Thus endeth the game...
i deployed a scout squad and a tactical squad with a librarian, he deployed 2 chimeras with vet squads.
first turn saw him jump out and waste 4/5 scouts woth his flamers, the last scout was then assaulted but the guard failed to hurt him. in turn, he let out a howl of victory, killed 1 guardsmen and the other 9 failed there leadership and where run down.
pretty standard combat results, odds-wise, but it's one I like to think about, simply for the sheer number of dice I had to roll to kill 6 termies.
The vet sarge stood his ground and finished off the remaining three daemons in the next few rounds.
---------------
Another time 5 dev (srg had power weapon) taking on a full Gen squad and wining by turn 5 of the game in CC.
I didnt know he had a squad of Dire Avengers and a Wraithlord in tow waiting for me. I moved in and assaulted his gaurdian squad. He sent in his avengers and wraithlord. My assassin fought all 3 squads simultaneously and only lost a wound to the Dire avenger squad and then slowly killed the rest of the enemys off.
In the end she killed a gaurdian squad, Dire avenger squad, and a wraithlord on her own. Eldrad finally killed her with his spear thing. The inquisitor lord made him suffer for this later with a hail of spychannon bolts out of a stormbolter.
This one happened long ago, I was playing Tau against Old CSM. Chaos Lord in a Daemonic Armour mounted on a bike, armed with lightning claws charged squad of Firewarriors, killed one of them - FW responded, managed to hit him couple of times and scored two wounds. Then, Chaos Lord failed both of his saves, failed leadership test and ran away just to be shot in the back in the proceeding Tau round.
On the other hand my marine have wiped that guys guardsmen off the planet every time. Once, my biker with meltagun was able to go all across his army destroying every tank he had (three chimeras, 1 hellhound and 1 leman russ) he then assaults some guardsmen in cover and dies from the dangerous terrain test. He's a bit of a one trick pony.
#1- My buddy's Blood Angels: With his Sanguinary Priest leading an Assault squad, they leapt into a forest, requiring dangerous terrain rolls, (honestly, I cannot remember WHY they needed to land IN the forest?) The end result was a dead Sanguinary Priest. From that moment on, (and even until this day), we have been inspired to sing a little ditty to the tune of Little Bunny Foo Foo. "Sanguinary Priest, jumpin' in the forest, swooped into the branch and bopped him on the head."
#2- My Catachans, supposed experts in covert warfare, were the attackers in a game involving sentries. I had 3 snipers, (Catachan snipers mind you! Real ones, with Deathworld toxins and 2+ to his. Remember, 3rd ed.), all of which rolled 1's to hit on turn 1. Thus, alarms were raised and the entire point of BEING the attacker was lost on my first go. *sigh*
#3- Our first Planetstrike mission, my IG as defenders. I kept 2 units of Stormtroopers in reserve for deep strike, one of which was packing a pair of Plasma guns and a sarge w/ Plasma pistol. Dedicated Termie hunters, (oh, and my Deathwing opponent had some termies, lemme tell ya!). Down they come, right on target. Perfect range, the glory boys line up their sights and unload 5 shots of plasma death. Three roll 1's. *sigh* Scooping up the same 3 dice, I roll my armor saves. Guess what? Yup, three 1's AGAIN, (seeing a parallel with story #2?).
This is why I keep a button on my bag that says, "Dice don't like me".
Oh, the look on his face that he soon buried in his hands! The termies were promptly mushed half to hell by 6 Quins and their friendly Avatar. w00t!
These troopers once ended up in an assault against some Ork bikers, some CSMs, and a Dreadnought, all at once.
They lasted two full combats and part of a third.
Another game, those troopers had a lictor pop up next to them and assault. They ripped its limbs off and beat it to death, and then consolidated and assaulted a second the next turn, ripped THAT one to shreds, and then started chasing a third lictor.
He ran away.
Not only did he stick his landing (deep struck within 3" of a table edge) he ran his fat ass clear across the board over the course of 4 turns, moving over 52" in total from a combination of always moving 6" when rolling to move (slow and purposeful, remember?) always running 6", always assaulting 6" and always getting a 6" massacre move. The whole time, he stomps and smashes tactical squads and eldar Dire Avengers AND shrugs off D-weapon hits from a Warhound Titan with dual turbolasers until eventually going toe-to-toe with Prince Yrial for 2 turns - the combat ended in a draw!
Way back in late 2nd/early 3rd edition, I had a small unit of BA Scouts (mohawks with bolt pistols and a CCW) immobilize and disable an IG Sentinel and then win in CC against a unit of Ogryns, causing them to flee. Unfortunately, they rallied and re-charged, squashing them flat, but they went down swinging.
This was really just dumb luck, but an Eldar player used his (wounded) Avatar to destroy my last DE Raider in CC, only to have it blow up and take him out!
a single terminator and a PK biker warboss with 1 wound remaining failing to kill each other in 4 rounds of combat (as it happened, this was in the same game)
a single sergeant with a cc weapon killing a 2 man terminator squad with his 2 attacks after i charged to change a solid win to a draw (2 hits, 2 wounds,' anything but snake-eyes!')
an isolated terminator chaplain and 1 terminator surviving 3 charging killer kans and going on to kill them, killing a trukk boyz squad, breaking a warboss +2-3 nobs, a battlewagon and surviving a few rounds with an ard boyz unit, ending the game with the chaplain on 1 wound.
a twin las/ML dread nailing a charging avatar on 2 wounds.
all that i can think of off the top of my head although i have had more than my fair share of howlers.
Nuf' said.
Spladge P
He was promoted to Senior Officer, and has proved me proud ever since!
Then the eldar player decided in his next turn to try and kill the 2 guys off, as harker was still firing his heavy bolter as he ran for the edge, so he charged with a 4 man seer council, with one farseer, and 3 warlocks. They were also fortuned. They managed to hit with most of their attacks and wound of course with their always wound on 2+. But some how i managed to pass about 5 saves, 2 on harker and 3 on the veteran (+5 save). And hit back, managing to cause a wound. He took it on a warlock, and failed his +4 invun. then rerolled it because of fortune and still failed. So the 2 guardsman beat the 4 man seer council. Then they did their leadership test, which was 9 because they lost by one, and even with a reroll they failed. this meant that the farseer and 2 warlocks ran for the hills, and ended up running off the board, as harker and the other veteran stayed close enough so they could not rally.
I was so funny, having 2 veterans running for the board who could not rally, to find that they got charged by a 4 man seer council, won the fight then made the rest of them run of the board, not bad for 2 guardsman :)
or if we can count Epic, space marine librarian with assault squad, taking down a warhound titan, detonating the reactor... with bolt pistols (god bless the stupid firepower system)
or for 2nd ed, virus grenade whiping out an entire ork army... tossed turn 1 by a farseer on jetbike
take your pick for most ridiculous, I'm sure I could provide more
Well back in days of old the Eldar could equip a powerfist on the lowly guardian and while making all those figures i had put in a powerfist with each close combat guardian squad. One of the games came down to a single remaining round of close combat sitting on an objective. The guy i was facing off against had stuck in his space marine commander right in the middle of an objective that my guardians had been holding all game.
Due to some wargear on the marine i had almost no chance of hitting or wounding the space marine with the week little guardians. Low and behold the one guardian left in the squad with anything that can kill the space marine steps up and manages to kill a commander with a tiny eldar power fist. Years later i still have that old figure, the army is long gone but the guardian remains proudly holding his pistol and weedy looking powerfist.
Also, I killed a whole squad of terminators with gretchins under the PREVIOUS codex... my opponent was not pleased.
Finally, and sort of off-topic, I used to run a snotling bloodbowl team... I never won (even with two trolls), but I did manage to kill a very powerful Skaven star player... the owner of the team was a notorious cheater and had most certainly fudged the stats of the player... this player had a been a bane to every team, all season... killed several of my star players on other teams... so killing him was kind of cool... and we never let him roll up another star player when we were not present!
Unfortunately, during his first turn his stone thrower dropped right on top of the nimrod general carrying the bray horn who promptly failed his "Look out, sir!" roll. The stone thrower killed him and about 8 other beastmen. Which meant the 50+ models waiting to hear the signal to attack kept on waiting.
And I had to face 2000 points of dwarves with about 800 points of special units that died quickly and spectacularly to dwarven shooting by the end of turn 2.
Of course, we played again, right away with a regular army, but I always liked pushing those rules too far...
The Defiler charged the Conscripts and I expected them to flee right then, but they held out in combat against a fully kitted Defiler FOR SIX TURNS(Thats 11 Combats) until the Techpriest arrived and killed it with his Servo Arm.
I went and bought new Conscripts that night so I could promote my new favorite soldiers!
In the words of Kren and Frep from TSOALR: "Twin Linked fool!!"
The first time I faced his land raider, he tank shocked some firewarriors. 1 does a death or glory, they have EMPs, he immobolises it. Next turn I assault with same squad and same fire warrior destroys it(rolled seperate). I have since given him a badge of honor so that I will always know what he accomplished.
Lately, I have a friend who just started playing, and started with SMs. He plays Sicarius(I believe. its the one with the insta kill sword) His sword doesn't seem to work on anyone but my other friend close combat Carnifex, he is 2 for 2. The shooty fex CCed him in a heart beat though.
In a standard game Captain Sicarius was bladestormed by some Dire Avengers. I rolled each die individually, just for laughs. In the end I laughed the most, suffering no wounds from 40 odd shots.
I was taking on a friend's 'Nids with my 4th Ed. Guard. Here came what was left of a choppy Warrior Squad, bearing down on my Ratlings back in a corner of the map.
Surprisingly, the little buggers held on for three turns before inflicting a wound and running away.
I've always imagined them crawling on the backs of those giant bugs and hiding behind that big head-frill.
it must have been just after the strike force rules were brought out since the staff member working gave my friend an exra full unit of stormguardians randomly in hte middle of the game.
thiose guardians poped up right next to a unit of 4 grey knights in power armour the 5th had been lost to an errant pistol round.
the storm guardians charged and unleashed a storm of attacks which claimed no grey knights the knights retaliated won combat and managed to run down the eldar. at which point my friend gave up.
annother somewhat related story is in fantasy i managed to beat that same friend with my bretonnian army against his tomb kings suffereing a total of 3 wounds. thats two casualties at 2250pts
5 man squad. 6 wounds. 5 ones.
It looked like it was going to be a draw with no objectives. The Tau player took a devilfish and dropped of 2 tau drones, one of of them captured the objective last turn and i lost, i had no clue those drones could capture objectives in 4th.
We've also seen tau drones win against terminators in close combat.
That game was so bad for my friend..so many 1s...
5 spears and Exarch with star lance, withdraw and skilled rider.
Farseer on jetbike with doom, fortune etc
Autarch on jetbike with Laser Lance and Mandiblasters.
Took on,
Lysander and a tactical squad.
Took out all the marines with shooting in the turns leading up but Lysander was still left standing at the edge of a forest (just inside).
I moved in with the spears and 2 characters and proceeded to Doom Lysander and fortune the squad (hoping my opponent would target the Farseer who had been the bane of his squads thanks to doom). Unfortuanatly, I couldn't get the 2 characters in as they were at the back from a previous combat and the consolidate wasn't enough to get them forward for the next move onto Lysander.
So....there I was with 8 dice at strength 6 and 3 at strength 8. These would all hit on 4+ and wound on 2+. I proceeded to miss with all but 2 and then failed to wound despite the re-roll of doom!!!.
Lysander proceeded to swing that hammer, hit all 4 times and kill 4 spears!!
The squad broke and it ended with the Seer, Autarch and Exarch making high speed to the nearest pub to drown their sorrows.
I still believe that independent characters should allow a squad under half strength to attempt to rally.....
In revenge I turned every gun in my army on Lysander the next turn and turned him into a pile of mush but....I've never used Spears since.
Blood crushers made about 3/4's of their to hit rolls, and then, whiff.
my GK's DESTROYED THEM. So HA!!!!!
TAKE THAT HATERS!!!!!!
He suffered no wounds. Next turn, he shot up a 10-man CSM squad on the way in, and once he finished shooting, and assault phase, the squad was down to one man, and still he was untouched.
The emperor was truly with my Angels that day.
She kills one... and is slain in return.
The fire warriors hit and wound her on 5's and she fails all three saves...
Facing him were uncountable hoards of termagaunts, their vicious claws glistening in the falling sun. With a fierce howl he charged directly at them, his mighty bolter singing out in a litany of death.
His battle brothers fought hard to recover his mangled body and found that, by some miracle of the emperor, he still lived. They took his crumpled body from the field of battle and interred him inside one of their sacred Dreadnoughts, laying upon him the grave duty of once more protecting the Imperium of man from all that would cause it harm.
4th ED, 14 BC's + Rune Priest in LRC. Out the Assault Ramps to charge Necron Warrior squad. 9 PW attacks + 8 PF attacks. 0 Necron warriors brought down (seriously I have never ever rolled that many 1 or 2's to hit before).
A SW tale of Epic Victory (or 2)
4th ED: Scout Pack with WGL operating behind enemy lines walk up behind 3 man broadside squad. PW scout and others manage to knock out drones, just leaving the 3 Broadsides. WGL unleashes 4 PF attacks, hits with 3 and kills all before him in one mighty strike
4th ED: Same Scout pack setup as before. This time we knock on the side of the Falcon holding the Howling banshees. The hatch is on the rear edge of the table (effectively blocking disembark). Need 6's to hit. 1 PF hit. Falcon comes down as burning wreckage with the Banshee's trapped inside.
Tau
5th ED: Stealth Suits vs Hormagaunts. Not only do I win combat, but they end up being outside of range for synapse and fail their breakcheck providing a nice target the following turn for my burst cannons.
Played yesterday - 10 man Eldar Guardian squad + warlock, blasted a SM 5 man squad down too one man. Charged in, SM killed one Guardian. I caused six wounds, which he passed! I fail my leadership test and get cut down by the marine!
3rd edition; lone terminator heavy flaming and powerfisting entire IG platoon and company command after his squad took a bad battlecannon shot. yes he even got the tank that got his crew. we do vengeance real good.
I lost that game, but I would dare to say that I won the battle, killing the Warlord of the Black Crusades with my Order's Blessed Weapon (The Sapphire Blade). So I didn't mind the loss!
First round of combat, goes bad, two stealers die. Four fire warriors die.
Second round of combat. One fire warrior dies, three stealers die.
Third round of combat. Stealers dead.
Also one occasion where a full squad of thousand sons rapid fired into my broodlord after he infiltrated(broodlord at this point was alone with two wounds left) then assaulted trying to clean off his last wound. Broodlord wins combat. Thousand sons run. He cuts them down. He def. made his points back that game.
The necron warriors moved to secure the flank, and an epic gun fight erupted, resulting in 10 guardsmen dead and not a single wound on the Necrons. Then the Power Fist-enhanced captain and the Power Sword armed Inquisitor smashed into the lines with a score of guardsmen sprinting to keep up. In the mayhem, my Inquisitor and his squad dished out, over 15 Necrons were wounded and should have fallen, but of course they all came back to slaughter the squad. The Inquisitor stood alone, hacking and slashing and managed to kill 1 warrior. All those hundreds of points for 1. Good trade
Example One:
42 Kroot outflank turn 4 by my opponent's objective. The 25 man squad charges the tactical squad & chapter master while the rest rapid fire into the back of a dreadnought. Dreadnought loses all its guns & is immobilized while the big squad kills 7 marines.
On my opponents turn 5 I kill off 3 more of the marines leaving only the chapter master left.
My turn 5 since I can't get the small kroot squad into btb, they move into cover. Meanwhile the chapter master makes 5 saves, kills one kroot, who promptly fail their leadership and are run down.
My opponent's turn six has him gun one kroot down with his pistol, while a vindicator gets into range & kills 8 more. Chapter master charges & kills 4 more, taking one wound. This time my kroot hold and on my turn the chapter master fails his attacks and the remaining 4 kroot manage to cause two wounds which he promptly fails with his artificer armor, and my 4 kroot grab the objective winning the game.
Example two:
My opponent deep strikes 6 terminators near my board edge to promptly have 25 kroot come in from reserves & assault them. Before they can swing the kroot kill 5 terminators leaving only the seargent who just made 6 armor saves. Next turn he makes 12 saves, and kills a kroot, who stick around. On my next turn, the kroot once again cause 13 wounds, which he passes all again, kills one kroot who then break & he runs them down. After that he attacked a broadside & shielddrone only to have a major slap fight from the top of turn 4 until the end of the game at turn 7, each causing no wounds.
Fantasy Game.
2nd Edition waaaaay back....
My Ork general charges 10 Chaos Knights with Crossbows.
They "stand and fire"
My friend picks up his 10 dice and says something Gamers should never say..
"anything but ones"
he rolls 1 on each of the 10 dice !!!!!
nobody laughed / celebrated / was angry
we just stared in absolute silence...
[is anyone clever enough to tell me what are the odds of getting 10 of a specific number on 10D6 ?]
: )
For context here, in Space hulk, a genestealer gets to roll 3d6 and choose the highest. A terminator gets to roll 1d6. Whoever has the higher number wins. Yet his 1d6 beat out the genestealers' 3d6 several times over. :D
i paid for it the next game though when i assaulted a squad of wytches with a bloodthirster. rolled a fist full of 1s to hit (yahtzee!) and the witches tore him apart with no loss of manpower. that was a really strange day.
Another of my favorite combats was with my Vespid. An 8-strong squad tied up no less than 5 IG squads (old 'everything Deepstrikes' IG), several of which were command squads. It's amazing what T4 allows you to shrug off, and I rolled 5+ saves like a maniac. it was Turn 5 when they finally died, and both me and Bjorn (my opponent) were kinda relieved.
Second story is of a game I played against a good friend of mine. We had an eldar vs space marine grudge match to play, and our legendary loudness and bravado while playing 40k has the whole store watching the game. I charge his farseer with a full terminator squad - 7 powerfists wounds has me convinced he was dead. He rolls 7 invulnerable saves and the store erupts!
Best part about it the other marine players just got sit sit and watch the first few turns while my blood angels showed how it was done.
1 Carnifex
1 full squad of hormaguants (after they charged her)
10 Immortals
10 Necron Warriors
7 Tyranid Warriors
The insane moment was when she took a charge from a full squad of hormaguants and passed 13 of her 14 saves, did her hit and run, flamed them and then assaulted them back wiping the squad.
