Their raider was shot down, right in front of 2 blob guard squads of about 30 and 40 guardsmen, plus commissars. After the shooting was done and some lucky rolling, only my Archon and 2 Incubi remained. My turn, I decided to charge both of the guard squads. Amazingly I only missed 1 attack, and wounded with most, taking out a surprising number of guardsmen. They attack back, directing all of their attacks against the Archon. After wounding is said and done, my Archon has 29 shadow field saves to pass. One roll at a time, he passes every single one. What was even better, is, even with commissars, both squads broke and were run off of the table.

Re: 40K Ridiculous Assault Stories

See, drones are awesome in close combat. With an incredible roll, 7 out of 8 templar drop pods land on turn 2, swamping my corner with troops. I whittled down a squad of templars, but they caught my suits in combat for 3 turns. The templars have a marine, a powerfist wielding sergeant, and the Champion. All wounds were either absorbed or blocked by shield drones, and the suits fail to kill anything. What does happen, is after three turns of combat, a single shield drone kills both the marine and the powerfister, and wounds the emperor's champion. Not to mention, the drone passed about 3 invuln saves. It took a squad of lightning claw termies to take down that drone!

Re: 40K Ridiculous Assault Stories

I just had an interesting story with a friend of mine.

1250 points Mostly Genestealer Nidz vs Troop heavy IG

I had a carnifex on the board and it had charged down a unit of foot sloggers. Previously he was hit with plasma and other painful things. He bites and Crushing claws his way through the squad but one guy. So the player wants to call it dead because its only one guardsman. I told him nah lets play this out. So he rolls Stupendously double 6's. Hit wound. I am thinking ok thats cool my 2+ save will rescue me...
...
...
...
1
...
...
...
My Carnifex took a bayonette to the face... Feeling pretty hardcore now, she rampages onto the hammerhead that was immobolized, used +2 str again and destroys it. Getting tired, she hides behind the wrecked hammerhead. Along comes a lone gun drone that happen to be passing by, its shots missed and it hurls itself headlong into the battle sister, who tries to kill it with her power sword, unfortunately, the canoness, falls flat on her face due to tripping on her high heels and dies as the drone shoots her at point blank range in the head, a fitting end to my hero

Re: 40K Ridiculous Assault Stories

A ong time ago (4th ed.) Marines had to hold a fort under assault from all directions, I showed up late so put 2 5 man squads of terminators on the perimeter as no room inside. Termis assaulted by 40+ genestealers and a carnifex, several turns later one TH termi remains and the back of the tyranid assault broken (the tyranids got recycled and the fortress overrun later) I'll always remember that one.... something to do with terminators making a save on 2d6 may have helped :o)

Best part about it the other marine players just got sit sit and watch the first few turns while my blood angels showed how it was done.

Re: 40K Ridiculous Assault Stories

I'll share two with you guys. The first of which isn't me, but someone else I played with a few times. A friend of mine has his big nasty 4th ed Khorne daemon prince, 2+ save, 4+ invul, 4+ FNP. Pretty damned hard to take down in combat. Every game I played against him he would pass an ungodly amount of armor saves and just keep coming until he squashed my units. Very disheartening. The first game I see him play against a guard player, and a random stormtrooper (not even a sgt!) kills him. Sheesh.

Second story is of a game I played against a good friend of mine. We had an eldar vs space marine grudge match to play, and our legendary loudness and bravado while playing 40k has the whole store watching the game. I charge his farseer with a full terminator squad - 7 powerfists wounds has me convinced he was dead. He rolls 7 invulnerable saves and the store erupts!

Re: 40K Ridiculous Assault Stories

My favorite assault was my Fire Warriors in cover getting charged by a Terminator Rune Priest (old SW codex) who had 1 wound left. He went last (as he had no frags), and 8 Fire Warriors slapped him down. Both me and my opponent just laughed, it was so ridiculous.

Another of my favorite combats was with my Vespid. An 8-strong squad tied up no less than 5 IG squads (old 'everything Deepstrikes' IG), several of which were command squads. It's amazing what T4 allows you to shrug off, and I rolled 5+ saves like a maniac. it was Turn 5 when they finally died, and both me and Bjorn (my opponent) were kinda relieved.

Re: 40K Ridiculous Assault Stories

was playing early 4th edition fielding black legion. had a day with 2 games: vs. blood angels feat. imperial agents, and vs. dark eldar. in the first game, a thousand sons squad on my side managed to pistol-whip a callidus assassin to death with no loss of manpower.
i paid for it the next game though when i assaulted a squad of wytches with a bloodthirster. rolled a fist full of 1s to hit (yahtzee!) and the witches tore him apart with no loss of manpower. that was a really strange day.

Re: 40K Ridiculous Assault Stories

Ha, mortar squads are only good in combat.
I still fondly remember a game involving a 3rd ed tooled up Khorne Lord and my mortar squad having a quiet tete-a-tete behind some trees.
Net result: Dead Lord.

Course, my friend got his revenge some time later, when, during a megabattle alongside Orks against me and another Guard player, we wiped out his Terminator squad all bar the Champ. Now, again, he'd decided to spend 70 odd points on tolling up this 1 wound champion. "Ahha!" Says I, "an easy kill."
I've had to subsequently blank the shame from my memory, but the champion then ran the length of the board, taking fire from around 3k of Imperial Guard, and shrugging it all off, while chirpily butchering his way through our combined army.

Re: 40K Ridiculous Assault Stories

oddly in the same battle guardsmen marbo watch the massed squads defeat and eldar jetbikes fortifying the eldar position on 3 objectives. marbo true to his moniker of the one man army avenged the guard by using his demo charge on avengers. the jetbikes not wanting to give up their tentative hold of three objective couldn't muster all their fire on the patch of jungle the demo charge had come from and marbo then charges the full strength jetbike squadron with his pistol blazing. while marbo was gravely wounded and lost the battle he had killed enough of the squadron that they where to short handed to secure the same three objectives before guard reinforcements arrived. winning me the game 2-1 instead of losing 3-2

Re: 40K Ridiculous Assault Stories

I was playing at a convention tournament and after having a massive 15 termy kills in the first round my guards 51 man squad saw combat against eldar dire avengers. charged by a 10 man squad in a last ditch effort to pull me off an objective, my guard laughed in the agile face of the enemy. taking a respectable 8 casualties my guards sergeants to to the fight but eldar technosorcery made their power swords of little use. only half the avengers made use of their soul stones and my squad was shaken. as my commissar laughed at the lack of death she noticed the sergeants preparing to flee! finding such a coward wanting she executed him on the spot, but instead of rallying the squad the sudden death broke the squad. the avengers bolstered morale made their aim true and the guard squad was destroyed.

Re: 40K Ridiculous Assault Stories

In a recent game of mine, Marines vs. Tyranids, I had started by putting a wound on the Hive Tyrant with a Combimelta from my Tactical squad, but those brave Rhino-riders aren't the heroes of this story. Instead it was my Devastator squad, defending against the same Tyrant's charge. 10 men with not a single power weapon. All the Sergeant carried was his Chainsword and Bolt Pistol. The Tyrant suffered 3 unsaved wounds, putting him under for good. My squad only took 2 deaths, so the victorious Devastators continued to shoot for the rest of the game.... until they were eaten by a Carnifex. I lost the battle, but I still killed a Tyrant in combat with Devs and no power weapons!

Re: 40K Ridiculous Assault Stories

This isn't really assault but it kinda is at the same time for what I was using it for. The twin-linked bolter was already removed so he decided to do a all on you own last stand. All he needed was anything but a 2 and he got the 2. I was terminators, my opponent was genestealers. I started it off with 3 guys on one side of the board, and 2 guys on the other. The three on the left quickly sealed off those entrances, meaning that all of the genestealers had to come on the right side. They quickly killed one of the termies there, and the other, now cut off from his comrades by their flanking maneuvers, backed slowly into a corner, shooting his storm bolter at the seemingly endless tide of 'stealers as he fell back. Eventually, they swarmed him, but with rediculously good rolls, he killed 3 or so genestealers in close combat (in addition to the dozen he stormboltered) before finally being cut down.

For context here, in Space hulk, a genestealer gets to roll 3d6 and choose the highest. A terminator gets to roll 1d6. Whoever has the higher number wins. Yet his 1d6 beat out the genestealers' 3d6 several times over. :D
