I'm building my Space Wolves army now. That way, when the new Codex comes out, I'll have a roughly playable force with only a few additions to make.

I have always felt that the Space Wolves should be a feirce drop pod army with everybody fighting on foot.
So as far as I'm concerned, for creating a rich background army, I shan't have any models which do not fight on foot -the way Russ taught the Space Wolves to fight!
If it emerges that the best Space Wolves armies for tournaments cruise around in Land Raider Redeemers and ride lots of giant wolves, well darn it, I suppose I'll have to buy those too!

its been rumored that the wolves will either have to entirely use drop pods for the army or none at all, so you might want to think about that as well...

Seems ironic that The Wolves' Primarch's name has been lent to the ubiquitous Imperial Guard battle-tank. He can't have been too fiercly opposed to a bit of tank-age when the time was right! I think I'd find it a lot easier to be fierce and aggressive if I had a huge battle-cannon and several tons of thick armour between me and the enemy...

I think it was due to him saving the crew of a crusade ships (I think his) and all the Imperial Army troopers on board. So when they found the STC print out for the Leman Russ/ They had an unamed tank type that had been newly invented, they called it the Leman Russ in honour of well Leman Russ the Primarch :)

Also, wasn't he originally an IG commander along with Guilliman? As in, not Primarchs, just an average Joe with a large cape?
Spun

Ahh no. Primarchs were created as Primarchs, not turned into them like a space marine.
Sorry.

I have always loved the army play style, fluff, and mythos but never really felt like the codex met up with that. Now that the newer codex and army books are being re-worked with the fluff in mind I really think that they will be pretty awesome and not just because they are the "new codex" army. The whole idea with the Sagas really helps to put it all together for me seeing as the Wolves are all about telling the story of their lives and learning form the past.

kauyon_la

?? I have, I play them....
The Chaos codex has some nice fluff basis when you look at if from the fact that it was intended to represent Renegade Marine armies as a whole and thus why it has a more generalist feel. But I do agree with what I believe you are trying say is that the codex doesn't do a great job of it. The Codex was very rushed but then that's the Orks fault seeing as their release windows were supposed to be swapped but because of problems with some of the new Ork sprues the Chaos codex was pushed forward 4 months.

i have mixed feelings about the new dex, i wish it were comming earlier or later, conflict is in november here which means i will only have a month to work out a dead killy army list, also i don't know how much they are going to change the play style of the army and how long it will take me to adjust
Sathos

Wolfy_Molder

unfortunately they are my only army, i do have access to a small eldar army but it needs another wave serpent or two, never played eldar before so i don't know how they will go for me, something tells me the adjustment from my rampaging horde of drunk marines to space elves will not be an easy one, ah well i have a few months to work out what i am doing
Sathos

ouch no fun... my main is orks although I have (roughly) 3000 point armies of custom space marines and night lords but I dont have the new 'dexes for either... so I have decided to start painting my tyranids lol...they need more adding to them but i'll start with what I have ^^

I'm liking this whole 'saga' spin to SW characters. I wonder if they can extend to army composition rather than simply pumping up the character in question; sounds like a good alternative to the rampant CharacterHammer I've been loathing so far. I'd much prefer a subway-sandwitch-style approach of building up a modular character than 'take named character X to receive Y benefit(s)'.

Mm.. the first thing I thought of when I saw "sagas" was the vampire counts book. Still, I think it sounds like a perfect idea for space wolves, and he may not necessarily want to play fantasy

What an odd way to specify: "Move, Assault, Fire"
...Space Wolves can shoot their ranged weapons at whoever they're in close combat with instead of using their normal attacks?
Sathos

yeeesss....surely it should be move, fire, assault...
lolcatz

Or maybe they have the assault phase before the shooting phase? That sounds like a pretty big disadvantage and might be something to balance out all the other goodies.

I'm really trilled about this release because space wolfes might just be that marine army that I can convince myself to start. combineing melee and storming is what is my play style and for campaigns I'm in real need for a "loyalist" army with my others beeing nids and csm.
Roa

Why does this army sound simply like "Space Marines Plus"
So basically, it's Space Marines, but with even more special abilities and wargear?
Also, I'm going to cry if Wolf Lords end up being even more beastly than Khornate Chaos Lords.
manton
They sound like space marines plus because that's what wolves are. If you've ever read any space wolf fluff they're always just like space marines but stronger, tougher, have sharper senses and most of all are a whole lot hairier! I'm really looking forward to this one. Wolves were the first army i really loved and so they'll always have a place on my shelf. If ragnar's model is any good, I'm totally smashing out ragnar's company this time. For Russ and for the Wolftime!
Roa

Sorry, but it still sounds like an over-inflated fanboy 'dex. Any chapter or Legion could be made into this. You could do Iron Warriors with heavy weapons galore and Bunkers with minefields instead of Rhino's or Night Lords with Fantasy equivalent Terror rules, etc.
it just seems like "lets take the super rare elite combat forces, and make a super rare elite amongst them even though they should be roughly the same!" type of thing.
manton

As an iron warriors player, your suggestion for them sounds uber cool and i will dream that that one day shall come to pass.
Sathos
Indeed..you get SM, dark angels, blood angels, space wolves, black templars all written up in their own codexes or minidexes so where are codex/minidexes for Emperor's children, Thousand Sons, Iron Warriors and World Eaters?
Surely if they feel the loalist chapters are different enough to warrant special treatment then the chaos end should get the same...
4thCompanyCommanderCorvus
Defently agreed as a Iron Warrior Lover and an off Player, I mean I started beacuse of the cool armour then I saw the old codex and realised I could possibly (legaly) have 4 Defilers and 9 Obliterators, then that all changed :(

"They will be able to take one sage and apparently cost about 130pts." Sadly the Tarragon and Oxo upgrades are unavailable in this Codex, but with the added sage, them roasted greenskins will taste a little nicer.

Well, I figured that the sooner it's out of the way the sooner they get to the other four 3rd ed codices that are cluttering up 5th editions perfection.
So bring on the Wolves and then bring on the Sisters, Necrons, DEldar and GKnights circa next millenium.
Sathos
yup and although they should be near the end of the list, Tau havent been updated yet... soo much could be "stopgap" fixed with some strong errata style work from one person on the design team (and I dont mean just for tau, necrons need fixes more than a whole new dex)
mathhammer
all they need to do to fix my sisters and GK is fix dedicated transports and storm shields.
necron and dark eldar need redone, the dark eldar codex for example makes me think of the 80s again.... ahh those were the days....
Engelus
yeah, in terms of all that is left, wolves are the easiest, al they need is a sprue or two, and a redo of some metal special characters.
Dark eldar, and sisters/knights need an entirely new line of modelsand as for necrons, I don't know if they are plastic or not.
dark eldar are logicly next, and they need an entire new model range, recuts would simply not do. and as such, wolves are the next easiest and quickest army to do.

i imagine that a draw back if the codex is getting fluffy would be much like the Red-thirst for the Blood Angles; the mark of the wulfen.

Mark of the wulfen is an option in the current dex so I say they'll probably keep it alright. Probably with a rule change.

I kinda liked the old SM book (the previous ed not the OLD codex) It let you make a certain specific chapter "feel" army but it threw some punishments in there for doing so!
I am also getting tired of the SM + theme! IMO there needs to be a balance. You can have all the cool special chapter specific stuff but you should loose out on some of the other things. Loose certain squad choices or limit the amount or something to make it unique and different and not just the upgraded package.
I have noticed the lack of variety in any other army as well. Chaos Marines are only one type ( no specific chapters, Night Lords, death guard etc) and the guard are now all the same as well. (sure they have catachan models but they play the same as any other list you will get out of the dex)
It would be nice if they went back to Chapter approves or more "official" mini dexs. But thats just me!

Contrary to many whiners' opinions SW have always been balanced. There are enough disadvantages to the SWs to offset the advantages. I'm sure the new codex will be the same.
As far as guard goes, you're way off base. I have played guard since 3rd Ed. and the guard have never been as much fun to play. I play against other guard armies once or twice a week and I have yet to play against the same list twice. There is plenty of variety.
