Bell of Lost Souls: 40K RUMORS: Space Hulk Contents?

  • Littleleadmen · 4 months ago
~Further commenters have indicated that 10 terminators is a more realistic number.

If BOLS dug a little further, they would see that the original poster on Dakka Dakka acknowledged that he had misspoke and the actual number was 10 termies plus a librarian. He even went as far as to correct it in his original post on Dakka Dakka.

I would suggest that BOLS do the same, otherwise the internet becomes even more of an echo chamber, with people arguing about how 20 termies is unrealistic, even when the actual rumour wasn't 20 to start with.

Oh come on BLOS. Do yer damned research. This 'news' is over a week old and was suspect in the first place.

If you're going to copy stuff straight from Dakka, read more than the first page.

Shhh little snotling, with your unecessary prattle.
  • Andy · 4 months ago
You can tell him to shush if you want, but he's right. BoLS often pulls articles from other sights, without crediting them.

And not only is the news often weeks old (such as Space Marine death toys), but is somewhat suspect when put under any kind of scrutiny.

BoLS does battle reports, and hobby advice very well.

    "News", not so much.
  • Wes Brown · 4 months ago
Actually, I have yet to see a BOLS "news" article that HASN'T cited a source of info. As you can see above, there is little blue text below the picture that says where they got the info from. In the case: Dakka. All "news" articles have this text. We just need to learn to look for it.

Also, if anyone is coming to BOLS specifically for news content, then you're misguiding your efforts. It's a hobby forum that does excellent work on expanding codex and fluff. Those that have limited time and solely follow BOLS (as I do) truly appreciate what some would call "copying stuff" from other sites. I get to be included in the rumor mill even if the news is a month old. So what if they're not on the cutting edge with news. Those more involved in the game than I am obviously visit those sites that offer breaking news. BOLS is NOT that site, and I have a hunch that they don't intend to make it into that either.
  • BuFFo · 4 months ago
Andy, you are just an example of an internet parrot.

You read what other dolts on other other 40k forums blindly say, and repeat it because you want to sound clever.

Posters over at Warseer, Dakka, etc... constantly say "Bols never credits us, they are a bunch of thieves".

    1) Bols ALWAYS cites their sources. Period. Learn2read ftw as the 'leet' onliners say.

    2) Some sites, like Warseer, has controlled leaks by GW, and they call them 'rumors' when they are actually just free, internet word of mouth marketing. So while there are rumors on Warseer and other sites, some of them are just controlled leaks, masked as rumors.

    3) So what if the news is a week old to YOU. To bols readers, they are new. And seriously, this is news/rumors about products coming out in 3 - 6+ months in advance. Does one week really matter? No, it doesn't. Get over yourself.

At least Bols doesn't require you to register a name, and you can post anonymously. Dakka, and other sites don't. Bols is a beacon of freedom of speech of which does not exist on other sites at all, and oddly enough, even with anonymous posting, Bols has the nicest group of respectable people around. So it is no mystery why some readers only use Bols for their articles, rumors and news.
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
Well done to Buffo and Wes... to Wes, I too am one of those with limited time and only really check BoLS so a week, a month...it makes no odds I would still rather know late than not at all and as Buffo says when the item is 6 months down the line a week doesnt matter.

To Buffo...I am starting to like you more and more dude, some of your posts come off as harsh or reactive and I have "posted against you" a few times but posts like this hit home and show that much of your supposed "dick-ness" is probably just the way you wrote something at the time or in how it was read.

    Nice job lads :)
  • HBMC · 4 months ago
I actually don't care if they do or don't credit their sources, and most of the time BLOS does. What I care about is the /content/ of the news. In this instance, there wasn't any. It was over a week old, suspect when posted, and if they'd read past the first page of the thread at Dakka they'd know that.

Being a one-stop-shop for rumours taken from Dakka, Warseer or whatever is fine - it saves time, and saves you having to go to Warseer, which is always a bonus - but a little bit of integrity with what they report would be helpful.

    BYE
  • Wes Brown · 4 months ago
Get over it man. BOLS linked to the Dakka page and someone looking to further learn about the subject can easily click the link and read there.

A single time does BOLS slip up on their reporting and they get hammered by (as BuFFo put it) internet parrots. It's unnecessary to make issue with this. A simple, polite correction would do fine. But that's not what you chose to do. Which leads me to believe that it's not just about BOLS slipping up on a detail.

Honestly, if the only things you have to say about this subject are negative, then maybe you best stick with the Dakka and Warseer forums.
  • BuFFo · 4 months ago
Sathos, I love you too :)

I think I need to add more smileys to my posts, so that the wording isn't taking so critically.

So in honor of you, I shall add many smileys from now on!

    :)
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
HAHAHA thats how I do it dude... at times my wit can be very dry/caustic with a lot of sarcasm
and we know such things dont carry well in text so I smile smile smile lol ;)
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
Umm Andy... I hate to stop you in your tracks as you are doing sooo well and all but the source is credited ..and I quote "Rumors brought to the community by DakkaDakka's: Chief Librarian Vaako " which also links to the source.

Also surely news a week late is better than no news at all?
As well as the fact that if they get it from another site the fact that it is suspect is nothing to do with BoLS and they do state with all of these that you shouldnt take them as gospel.
  • kauyon_la · 4 months ago
This should be a pretty nice release. Cheap Terminators are always win(ask the Doombringer Annihilation Force), if only Dark Angels were a more competitive codex....

I have a feeling the scuplts on these might actually be pretty nice though and I can't wait to see how they vary from the standard molds especially the two Characters.
  • Vampire Harlequin · 4 months ago
Wonder if they'llchange the box. Seems amusing how the termies look like if they met in a corridor, one of the termies would have to back up, possibly making a vehicle-reversing beeping noise to let the other past. Meanwhile, the Termie at the headof the squad there (Steve I call him) is busy just glory hoggin' and blocking his mate's fire-arcs. They're bouncing up and down going 'What's happening? I wanna see!'

The '3-D Roleplay' seemed odd too me. Are theyimplying a dimension was missing from other board games? As I recall, you couldn't go up or down stairs or anything, so Ididn't know to what the 3-D referred.

Finally, the tag line, 'man vs alien in desperate battle' sounds like the best. newspaper-headline. Ever.

In any case...it'sspace hulk! Yay! Wonder whythey're deciding to do it? Reaping on nostalgia from us old hands? Re-introducing an out-of-the-box game to bring in new customers? Either way, the chace to have this game, which was excellent fun, and this time paint thepieces properly and all is too good to miss! Hurrah!
  • LEGION3000 · 4 months ago
3d is referring to the playing pieces being models rather than flat counters. I highly doubt it will have any stairs.

I don't really see where they get the roleplay part from. Just having a marine that carries over into the next game is not roleplaying.
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
Remember that old box cover is from a different time... when "real roleplaying" ie: d&d/cthulhu at the time was done by secretive cults in mother's basement...

Also its not hard to see where they can get roleplaying from, you do take on the role of the overall commander leading the terminators, in the same way you do in most pc strategy games.... Heck they could slap roleplay as a tag onto Monopoly because you are playing the role of a property tycoon :)

To use the word the product doesnt have to fit the "common preconceptions" of the word, only the literal meaning ;)

    Clue: 3-D roleplay.

    Life: 3-D roleplay.
  • BuFFo · 4 months ago
3D role playing is just weak marketing.

I am sure many dolts will fall for it.
  • Anonymous · 4 months ago
    "Will fall?"

We have no indication that the new packaging will look anything like the classic box pictured there.

I'm sure plenty of dolts ALREADY fell for it the first time around.

From what I've been told by a local manager is that the plastic terrain idea was dropped as they would not be able to fit it in the box, but it may have 3D card terrain. Also the genestealers are in different poses with things like coming out of the ground and lookinig round corners...

I wonder why the metal Broodlord in an otherwise all-plastic set?

I'm interested to see how the Librarian turns out.
  • Cergorach · 4 months ago
I seriously hope the don't include any metal miniatures, that would seriously cramp my style! Plastic Fanantastic all the way ;-)
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
If its metal broodlord then it would mean they are working with current miniatures, not doing new ones... so sprues of genestealers, doing a sprue of termies (likely the snap ones) and throwing in the metal broodlord thats currently available... however it wouldnt fit with the games purpose (to reach a wider audience) as it would require superglue whereas snap models dont...so I pour a truckload of salt onto that one
  • Anonymous · 4 months ago
Obviously because they didn't want to make a new mold for a plastic Broodlord.
  • Game Thug · 4 months ago
There is simply no way it is a metal model. GW does not release metal models in starter game sets. With the exception of the limited ed. Space Marine Captain and Bretonnian Knight, as a promotional offer, GW has not released a metal model in this sort of box since...well, since ever.

And no, Bommas does not count.
  • closetgamer · 4 months ago
With retro board games in mind, they should re-release Tyranid Attack and I would like to see the return of genestealer hybrids from the Space Hulk of old. Can't wait.
  • JON · 4 months ago
    DUDE,...SPACE CRUSADE !!!
still got my models, , hell yeah, yellow red and blue plastic marines :P
  • Dr Henry Killinger · 4 months ago
Space Crusade was brilliant! All marines were Devastators, Marines could carry Assault Cannons and Plasma Guns could only be aimed diagonally.

Space Crusade is what got me into this hobby.
  • JON · 4 months ago
ahhh back in the days when conversion beamers were fashionable, and missile launchers were tipped with pine cones :D ha ha
I was but a small child thing when I first got my hands on a set of slightly disturbing toy soldiers in those murky years of the early ninetys, when everything was cyber-punk, and my nights were spent sneaking down stairs to watch those warped japanese cartoons at 3 in the morning on channel 4.....I quite liked the smurfs back then too :P ha ha
  • Destructor · 4 months ago
I am so pumped for this. I am getting two copies- one for me and one for the beach house. Sweet!
  • heartbit · 4 months ago
I hope they've solved the base sizing issue (for corridors, ...). Now the terminators are not using the same basing as the original SH did.
In fact, I still see some terminators deployed on 40K games with the 25/28mm model base.
  • LEGION3000 · 4 months ago
Yep, happens all the time over here. lots of my group are old timers and they just plop down their tiny termies. But its all good, more termies to get hit by pie plates.
  • Name · 4 months ago
It's actually 13 terminators plus the Librarian. The Terminators are all unique and the Librarian is Maphiston before he bcame the lord of death
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
and you can link us to your source I assume?

By the way its 103 terminators and the librarian is actually the god-emperor of mankind and it isnt just genestealers, its the whole of hive fleet kraken in the box totalling several billion tyranids...

    ;)
  • FatalXS · 4 months ago
    Bugger painting that lot!
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
haha tell me about it... a friend of mine was going to do a hive fleet's ground forces in 3rd ed till he realised how many it was...he was thinking double a marine chapter tops until we all told him the numbers should be almost limitless... he fields a 3k max force these days and the bugger moved to the other end of the country before I got to play him lol

  • Tonelowke · 4 months ago
Good luck, apparently there are only supposed to be one or two released per store...
  • Lagduf · 4 months ago
The guy this rumor comes from thought there would 20 Terminators because he was told there would be "two boxes of terminators." Obviously he wasn't an SM player because he thought 1 box=10 terminators, hence 20 terminators.

Either way, i'm dying for this release. As are a lot of people in the board game community.

Space Hulk has a lot of fans, and not all of them even play 40k!
  • Bomster · 4 months ago
Yeah, I'd say 10 Terminators (+ options) would be realistic; 20 would rather crowd the board (not to mention that you'd need tons more Genestealers to stand a chance).
  • LEGION3000 · 4 months ago
Yeah, I doubt 20. That would take forever to play using 20 termies. Probably just 2 squads of 5 like the old game.

As for metal brood Lord, I think that is a fanboy inclusion. GW are not in the habit of making an all plastic board game and tossing in a free metal mini. Also a brood lord doesn't really fit into the game unless it gets some different rules.
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
hmm a brood lord would work, they are effectively a more powerful strain of genestealers often leading genestealers in various actions... it would make sense that an infested hulk would have a broodlord at its heart.

On the rules front I would expect them to be a watered down version of the relevant 40k rules with the genestealers probably being buffed a bit and if the broodlord (which if true I would expect to be plastic) is included would also have a reasonably "fixed" ruleset like the librarian would.
  • LEGION3000 · 4 months ago
Space hulk doesn't play anything like 40k in even the slightest bit. It would make sense fluff wise that there might be a brood lord but game wise not so much.

Tyranids are already super killing machines rolling 3 dice in close combat. A brood Lord would be either rolling 4 dice or getting +1 on 3. I think that would be rather overpowered.
  • Gotthammer · 4 months ago
They did have rules for the patriarch in Genestealer: 9APs, 4 dice with a +3. Couldn't move though, but used the crappy, crappy Genestealer psychic rules and was very powerful.
  • desaster · 4 months ago
I´ll bet money on the fact that there won´t be any metal in the box.

Otherwise 13 Terminators sounds reasonable: 5 with Stormbolter, 5 with HtH-weapons, 2 heavy weapons, character.
  • Robey Jenkins · 4 months ago
I'm surprised to hear any such rumours coming from store management. The last I heard, anyone outside the Studio and the Executive Board was being kept firmly out of the information loop.

I suspect this may be attention-seeking, speculation or scuttlebutt.
  • Completely Anonymous · 4 months ago
Like I've said, if this turns out to be the super secret limited run "be there on the day or miss it" release I'll be mightily annoyed. I have friends I would dearly love to play this with, but for various reasons going to a GW store isn't practical.
  • Firaya · 4 months ago
Hehe I feel your pain. I have to take a flight out of my country to reach a GW store, so I'd hate it as well if it was a limited time offer.
  • closetgamer · 4 months ago
I'm assuming GW have realised that their older games carry a lot of weight hence the decision to re-release Space Hulk, Talisman and publish the rules for the original Mighty Empires and Gorkamorka online. They should keep going. All we need now is a re-release of Man O War and associated minis to keep everyone happy! That'll stop ship selling on Ebay for $50 each.
  • JON · 4 months ago
ohhhh, I loved gorkamorka, they keep saying it's not space hulk, maybe with all the new ork releases this year they'll continue the trend and release that, full of rebel grots diggas and muties :P
ahhhh, I can only dream :) ha ha
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
that would be awesome! I still have the original ^^

"Seems amusing how the termies look like if they met in a corridor, one of the termies would have to back up, possibly making a vehicle-reversing beeping noise to let the other past. That sort of thing is actually core to how Space Hulk works.
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
And how terminators are designed ^^ the ability to block a corridor even when dead is a key tactical point for such actions as if it does go tits up the guys behind you have a valuable few extra seconds to retreat :)

Think of it in terms of school bully... you are 5ft8 ... if a bully of 4ft5 tries to block the corridor you go over/past him... if he is 6ft6 and built like a bunker you are intimidated and likely to turn and flee.... which for the termie means he gets a free shot at your arse :)
  • meh2009 · 4 months ago
loved me some space hulk back in the day, don't know why they don't put a little more work in to it and make it a proper 40k expansion for ship to ship boarding actions. cool linked battlefleet gothic/ 40k games anyone? and throw in proper plastic corridors that would be ace. GW is finally starting to use some of the old games to their advantage instead of shutting them all away. BRING BACK MAN'O'WAR please. Or at least put the rules online so i don't have to pay stupid ebay prices for them.
  • TheRealChris · 4 months ago
Man O War is hated by certain GW staff, ensuring it will never see the light of day again. Which is a shame as it formed the 'big three' - Blood Bowl, Man O War and Space Hulk - in terms of sheer damn fun to play.
  • closetgamer · 4 months ago
Why do they hate Man O War? What is there to hate? It's awesome! I'm very intrigued.
  • PlasmaCow · 4 months ago
That was actually how BFG started in early development, as a big rules pack for having fleet battles and boarding actions happening simultaneously. However the project was so big it got scaled back and massively simplified to become the BFG game that we know today.
  • Myu · 4 months ago
I reckon one terminator captain and 5 termies makes more sense. I played space hulk the computer a lot and basically the terminators died and the captain had to kill everything by himself and prey to god a genestealer didn't attack from behind.

Hm... maybe those 10 terminators are terminator CAPTAINS :P
  • Ianar · 4 months ago
In my local gamestore the manager said he'd heard a rumour that the models in the renewed Space Hulk would be Inquisitor scale. Not sure if I believe that.

Space crusade is still all kinds of awesome. My brothers and I still play it! Seriously, there's a DOS emulator that you can play it on, and the sophistication and enjoyability of the gameplay, which is identical to the rules of the board game, is remarkable even today.
  • KveldUlf · 4 months ago
At retail price from GW, those models would work out at around £150...

Either the numbers are wrong or it demonstrates just how screwed GWs loyal customers are in terms of pricing.

    ~Adam
  • RiotMan · 4 months ago
They will likely not be the full kits for terminators just like the AOBR box or previous boxes of board games and starter sets. Still 20 terminators and a bunch of genestealers for 50 pound (USD $75) is a really goodd deal for the smurf players even if they are vanilla.
  • RiotMan · 4 months ago
    Or the corrected 10 termies
  • alessander · 4 months ago
big question is if the models (and board squares) will be 25mm or not.
  • The Hobo Hunter · 4 months ago
Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if they were just slightly off-scale; just enough to ensure that no-one could make a cheap deathwing army or something like that. Maybe scaled like the old metal terminators? IIRC, they were a little bit smaller than the plastic kits we have now, yet with GW's current technology I'm sure they could still make some ace looking termies.

Also, if worse comes to worse and GW makes retarded 'revised' rules for Space Hulk (not saying a revision would necessarily be bad, just that there's a chance) you could always just toss them out and use old space hulk rules. The miniatures/board pieces are all I'm really interested in tbh.
  • Yaji · 4 months ago
About the pricing.. The plastics will probably all be simple snap fit versions, not the same sprues as in the current boxes
  • RiotMan · 4 months ago
On that same note i have a friend who collects tyranids. in his house he has a bucket full of Mccrag and "sex toy blue" stealers that he got for free/next to nothing. Even with an entire army of nothing but full squads of them on the table the bucket isn't even empty.
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
I loved the blue genestealers, personally I feel that they are still the better version and some of GW's best work to date...if they had simply re-tooled them to be multi part I would probably be a nid player :)
