Bell of Lost Souls: 40K RUMORS: The Wolftime Approaches

  • gwensdad · 4 months ago
But will they have access to any types of Leman Russ MBTs?
And Wolf Riders? Rough Riders for Marines!
  • mordiano · 4 months ago
That was a bad idea and has since been dropped..... (I hope!)
  • BrotherWill · 4 months ago
I pray. First GW is trying to price me out (which is impressive, as I have a fair amount of disposable income) now they try to game me out with goofy ideas. Seriously? Wolf riders? Lame with extra lame sauce on a lame seed bun.
  • duder · 4 months ago
You know its saying alot when people think something in the 40k universe is maybe too goofy (and yes space marines riding wolves does sound too goofy)
  • Skragger · 4 months ago
I agree, wolf riders are a double helping of lamecake, however, what might look interesting would be marines with trained attack-wolves. I saw a cool rough riders conversion where the IG weren't mounted, but they had attack dogs
  • mordiano · 4 months ago
The bad idea in this case was including an IG vehicle in an SM list. Slow, heavy, ponderous, crude=IG ...does not mix well with the fluff of SM and even less with the playing style. Not forgetting appearance.

This is why they took away lasguns from the Eldar, and bolters from the orks. You just cant mix-and-match between theese diffrent styles, doesnt look coherent.

    On the giant dogs?

I actually like the idea :)

...and whats stranger with that than any other kind of IG roughrider (liuzards from dessert worlds etc).

Think it will add charachter to the army!!

PS. Hoping for a realy cool raven with Njal; this could be so cool fluffwise!!
  • Drew_Da_Destroya · 4 months ago
Well, when the IG Vehicle in question is named after the Primarch of the SM legion, then I would think it's perfectly fine for one to show up in the Codex. Fluffwise, it makes perfect sense, and is in fact seen as a show of respect between the Guard and the Wolves.

This isn't the fluff of SM, it's the fluff of SW... I agree that a Leman Russ doesn't fit in an Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Grey Knights, Black Templar, or any other form of Marine. But they completely mesh with the Wolves.
  • Chaosgerbil · 4 months ago
    Well said.
  • MeanAngel · 4 months ago
Little fantasy goblin riding on a wolf sounds fine. A power-armored Space Marine, who weighs around half a tonne riding on a wolf ? Yeah, suuuuure, whatever....(rollseyes) ....
  • Fulminata · 4 months ago
Whether or not the concept works, the wolf in question would be a Fenris wolf, which has been described in previous fluff as being a huge beast at least the size of a horse, not a terran wolf.
  • annon · 4 months ago
Not a big fan of Wolf Riders.

Been too long dreaming about what this codex should be, I fear it may fall short of my expectations...
  • BrotherWill · 4 months ago
That seems to be their business model with all the latest codexs.
  • Bucho · 4 months ago
nice to see they get some army specific nice stuff.

and the plastic kit sounds like it could be good value for anyone with marines, not just wolves.
  • Spawn_of_the_Warp · 4 months ago
Yes I thing my Khorne Berzerkers would look good with wofl head mix in
  • Ryan · 4 months ago
"Canis Wolfborn" sounds to me like a revamping of the 13th Company Woulfen. Fluffwise they could be those who have failed the Space Wolfs initiation rites and never received the Canis Helix. Instead of leaving them as slavering beasts prowling Fenris they could through them to the front line so they aren't just a wait of geneseed.
  • fenris · 4 months ago
    Found this... http://galaxyinflames.blogspot.com/2009/07/spac...
Possible inspiration for the new Canis Wolfborn model. I'd like to see what they are coming out with.
  • JL · 4 months ago
It all sounds really cool, but come on those have got to be some super strong wolfs! I know the current wolf models are big (I have a bunch) but depending on who is riding them (Marines or scouts) that might look to far fetched.....
    ......
    ....
...Wait now I kinda hope its terminators riding the wolfs!

with all that said I can't wait for the codex
  • Dantethegolden · 4 months ago
that's exactly what i was thinking! those wolves have to be huge to support 1500 pounds of marine in power armour. besides that, a wolf almost seems out of place next to tanks and land speeders and other technological marvels. kindof adds to the whole gothic theme, though.
  • Kirasu · 4 months ago
I guess this means Jervis' vision of "marines" has been fired.. What are these options? DA, BA and Chaos sure dont understand what cool options are
  • Mike X · 4 months ago
Chaos has some pretty sweet options still. Maybe not as great as they did in the last codex, but they can still do some cool stuff in their new one. But I agree, I'd like to see more options for them (and other armies).
  • hludwig11 · 4 months ago
Can we please all stop beating that dead horse. Yes it wasn't what everyone was hoping, but every codex since has rocked out with its socks out. (Thought I was going to write something else didn't you?) Orks, Space Marines, Imperial Guard, all of them great codexes. They made one ok book, and then they fried the writer, I mean he moved on to other things. Besides the price increases GW as only done good to great things. As long as the mins. keep getting better and better I'll just play the armys I like not talk about the ones I hate.
  • Spellscape · 4 months ago
I think if new wolves will be really good - they will find their way in to my Goblin army :-)
Anyway - I have almost all old metal SW - after the new codex I think I'll start finally painting them :-)
  • Conrad · 4 months ago
They definitly have Lightning claws...or a version there of. You need only look at the new artwork in Planetstrike for confirmation of that.

I note that the claws are much longer and pronounced in both the mini and the artwork though.
  • Big Jim · 4 months ago
I think you missed the point. SW don't use lightning claws, they use Wolf Claws! They will have their own special rules in the new SW codex.
  • Fulminata · 4 months ago
Which means they might have actually been listening to everyone who's been saying if you want to give the same piece of equipment different stats in different books, then at least give it a different name.
  • anonymous · 4 months ago
Funny for me, i build a wolfguard with sword and shild riding on a wolf (reaper werewolf model; much bigger). I used it as a bike with wolfguard + 2 normal sized wolves.
I remember the polish modeller Scibor produced a very cool set of wolfriders. But not sure.
  • Vampire Harlequin · 4 months ago
If you saw a Space Marine hurtling towards you on a wolf, wouldn't you justshoot his furry steed and leave him stranded? If these things are gonna be strong enough to carry a plated Space Marine, and tough enough to not be spooked by, or injured in, the heat of battle...ye gads, they must be super-wolves!

You can already hear the cries of WFB goblins as they yell, 'Riding Wolves? That's OUR shtick!' before exploding in a hail of bolter rounds.
  • hludwig11 · 4 months ago
LOL, I can almost hear the hardcore WFB players throwing a fit now.
  • BigGrim · 4 months ago
Fenrisian Wolves are Super Wolves. Much bigger that Terran Wolves and much smarter. Some of the species grow to bigger than Rhino APCs.

    I love Space Wolf fluff!
  • Skragger · 4 months ago
"Gah! I'll never be able to wash this wolf smell out of my armour! we're never riding on Brother Bjork's giant Wolf again!"
  • JL · 4 months ago
I hope they include one of those bigger then a Rhino wolfs!! as some kinda Space Wolf monstrous creature! don't really think it'll ever happen but I can always hope!
  • Kryppers · 4 months ago
The Wolfmounts sounds like the trendy conversions of SW characters on juggernauts you see every so often.

    should be an interesting 'dex.
  • Silber · 4 months ago
I just hope they retain the Leman Russ Exterminator. I don't play wolves, but I always thought it was cool they could take it. Also I don't want my wolf-loving buddy to whine to much about the changes they make.... he's been waiting for years to get that Russ, just to be sure it's still in the codex which "has to be right around the corner"....

I think he's going to faint when he finally holds that book in hand....o.O
  • faultie · 4 months ago
I agree with the first bit. I don't play Space Wolves, but I've often thought that their use of the LR:Ex is quite cool and fluffy. I like it.
  • Robey Jenkins · 4 months ago
So does that mean that he's "Bjorn" again?

    LOL!
  • mordiano · 4 months ago
    Still entombed Robey, still entombed
  • BigGrim · 4 months ago
    Badum Tish!
  • Robey Jenkins · 4 months ago
I thank yow. I thank yow. I'm here all week, ladies and gentlemen. Try the salmon!
  • fenris · 4 months ago
Did you just fly in? Boy, are your arms tired?
  • Skragger · 4 months ago
Damnit.. now we need to pun-ish him
  • TSINI · 4 months ago
i'm thinking of selling my old space wolves, i need the money so must part with my beloved sons of russ.

anyone know if people would be snapping up old space wolf stuff, or are they likely to hang on and buy the new stuff?
  • whitewolfmxc · 4 months ago
What stuff you got ? i collect old SW models just for collection

If your interested you could email me
  • TSINI · 4 months ago
off the top of my head,

10 grey hunters, 10 blood claws, 5 long fangs, an iron priest, 2 rhinos, 1 landraider, 1 predator, logan grimnar, a converted (badly) wolf priest and a converted (badly) wolf lord from a lightning claw terminator

to be honest i might just box them and make them my next project after this guard army. i'll just have to be broke longer lol

but yeah if you fancy any of the figures let me know.
  • BrotherR · 4 months ago
wouldn't scouts riding wolves be cool. They could infiltrate because no noisy engines like bikes
  • Ian · 4 months ago
aye - but the size of a Fenrisian Wolf makes them a little hard to hide ;)
  • BeastOfShadow · 4 months ago
Fenrisian puppy then? Still should be plenty big.
  • Skragger · 4 months ago
Aye, and dont forget the smell...
  • Theloser · 4 months ago
Ok, everything so far sounded cool.... But Space wolfs riding on wolfs ? Those must be really, really big. Not shure what to think of it, depends on how minature's are going to look (Wolfs with armour plates ? hmmmm)
  • Inquisitor Hate Machine · 4 months ago
Brimstone hinted on another forum that the vehicle is a new Land Raider variant
  • MeanAngel · 4 months ago
Wow, like we needed yet ANOTHER Land Raider variant ... :-/
  • TSINI · 4 months ago
one with a wolf launching cannon!
  • mordiano · 4 months ago
one with thoose ultra-sound dog-scarers to whip up the dogs into frenzy!!!
  • annon · 4 months ago
I always thoought a 13th Co Variant with Plasma Cannon Sponsons, TL Heavy flamers on the front (Would have to have a special rule ignoring the squad that just disembarked) and a Teleport Homer on the tank rather than a Multi Melta.

-Imagining this is awesome to me. 13th use little to no vehicles (in my mind) as nothing would last long enough in the warp with constant battle and little to nowhere to repair things. Landraiders I think would last though. A variant with Plasma cannon sponsons blowing holes in buildings/vehicles, while the Heavy flamers burn/flush out any infantry, then get assaulted by whatever is inside, while Rune Priests use The Gate psychic power to warp in by the tanks and provide close fire support.

I dunno, as a commander, I don't know how you couldn't out a teleport homer on your toughest vehicle that is constantly in the fray of battle.
  • Inquisitor Hate Machine · 4 months ago
Make the heavy flamers work like the IG hell hound :) That might be fun just to convert up
  • Anonymous · 4 months ago
It'd be cool for Wolves to have snow motorcycles or some landspeeder "snowspeeder" variant. :(
  • mordiano · 4 months ago
Haha, if you ever been to northern scandinavia you would see that thoose who actually drive thoose things are far from cool!!!

Still though, could be some interestingly converted bikes!!!

    http://www.norwegianadventures.com/images/scoot...

actually, quite a lot of inspiration there:

Scouts flanking with skiis, stuff pulled by wolves...

    hehe

  • Tad · 4 months ago
    Marines.... riding giant wolves?????

    WORST

    IDEA

    EVER.
  • annon · 4 months ago
    /Signed.

Space Wolves will have degrated to goblins... I've played SW for almost 13 years and I hate the idea. - If it's in the codex I'll just black out the section with a marker and pretend it was never in there.
  • Poochute · 4 months ago
Wait til you see it. It is very fluffy (Narrative, not fur) and seriously awesome.
i think you meant 'degraded' but fluff-wise and in uniqueness this should be very awesome, and a nice fast attack thing to perhaps balance out the lack of drop pod goodness.
  • Deris87 · 4 months ago
The best part of this is it means The DE codex will be on schedule for January ;)
  • Kirasu · 4 months ago
    Yeah january of 2013
  • fenris · 4 months ago
    Ahahahaahaaa!
No love for the DE. I love it!
  • David · 4 months ago
    Marines on Wolves = Awesome!
  • Stephen · 4 months ago
Wolf riders i love it i see how GW are going to relive of my money now
  • steve g. · 4 months ago
I have found a bit more rumors over here as well : http://space-wolves-grey.blogspot.com/2009/07/n...
  • Shane · 4 months ago
Not sure if i am the only one, but i have heard of a land raider with assault cannon sponsons. Perhaps a new land raider variant in place of the leman russ?

Would make the wolves more space marine-y.
  • Sasquatch1916 · 4 months ago
well, I picked up an SW army because it's supposed to be the "Fantasy" chapter and I'm glad to see GW is going with more fantasy stuff like wolf riders. Fenrisian wolves are as big as Rhino apc's so maybe we'll see giant wolves as a sort of super fast troop transport that can carry 5-10 marines. As for the rest; Njal coming back, possibility of new Wulfen, new plastic kits, a unique vehicle, and new models/characters? *drools*
  • Ahriman · 4 months ago
I'm just not sure that wolf riders are really gonna look or indeed feel that good - i am dreading looking at them, then again i have been proved wrong before...
  • Asymmetrical Xeno · 4 months ago
The Wolf riders could be good, it would only suit scouts though IMO. But scouts riding giant oversized wolves could be cool - and its one more thing that seperates them from normal marines and I think if your going to give different chapters a codex you should make them visually different as possible IMO.
  • faultie · 4 months ago
I don't think it's a unit of guys riding wolves. The rumours seem to indicate that it is just a single special character (Canis Wolfborn) who is riding one. Maybe I'm wrong.
  • Big Jim · 4 months ago
New from WS; Also Canis is power armoured and has 2 wolf claws. The wolf has some cybernetic bits on it. Its size may have been exaggerated a little it's just a bit bigger than a Juggernaut. IIRC taking Canis also allows you to take two cav choices, 1 can be SW mounted on wolves, the other is just wolves.

There is a unit of SW riding Wolves.
  • faultie · 4 months ago
    Ahhh...ok. Thanks.
  • Game Thug · 4 months ago
Wolf Riders? Gayer than a handbag full of rainbows....
  • Anon · 4 months ago
So long as the Skaven are completly ignored, the the DE will be out in November...

    PLEASE!!!
  • Drew_Da_Destroya · 4 months ago
Considering this Wolf codex is supposed to be out in October, a November DE release seems to be a bit of wishful thinking, GW likes to give the new army some time to dominate before putting out the next codex. January, though, is a very real possibility... and an exciting one!
  • wolves · 4 months ago
i dont see what everones problem with a marine riding a giant wolf is. Chaos lords can ride steeds and they why the same as a loyalist marine. Id love to see a wolf the size of the fantasy juggernaut
  • bryce963 · 4 months ago
Crap.... just when I thought I was done with marines, then they put marines on giant wolves... looks like my guard will be moving closer to Fenris, and may have some allies.
  • The Mike · 4 months ago
Has anyone found out if the rumor about the new character for $41.25 is true and the where is the "trade listing"?
  • Athanaris · 4 months ago
I don't think anyone has considered that Canis Wolfborn may be an IC rather than a unit. Of course a unit of SW's riding Fenrisian wolves the size of Rhino's would be cool.
Strike that. got off on the wrong track. The Unit thing looks like wishful thinking on some level.
As for mounted chaos...I actually had an ancient box (plastic), from GW, containing 5 chaos marines and 5 horses...
  • Chaosgerbil · 4 months ago
I'd love to see pics of that. How ancient can it be I wonder, since it took a pretty long time to see plastic chaos marines.
  • Athanaris · 4 months ago
They were old(80s) CMs in metal with plastic horses in a clear plastic Citadel(?) box. I gave them to a buddy of mine and he says he still has them, stay tuned.
  • Shin_Ra · 4 months ago
it looks like the more prominent weapons for the wolves will be the lighting claws *sigh* ill miss you o' powerfist ;_; BTW i hate how the LC look in 40k; maybe if the finger were clawed/talon then that would be cool but stupid butcher blades sticking out of a powerfist is halfed ass an lame
  • BeastOfShadow · 4 months ago
"1,2 Freddies coming for you. 3,4 better lock your door. 5,6 grab your crucifix. 7,8 gonna stay up. 9,10 never sleep again."
  • annon · 4 months ago
Haha. - I was thinking the same thing.

    - Lightning claws are awesome.
  • Poochute · 4 months ago
the new wolf guard with 'wolf claws' looks markedly different from regular lightning claws. Far better imo.
  • mordiano · 4 months ago
Yeah, but then again there are several models with diffrent lightning claws: terminators, power armouired matrines. They dont look al the same.

Its like with powerfists, they dont look the same between an IG officer and a SM one.

It is NOT obvious that theese things are not lightning claws.

    ...very wolwerine-inpired though: me like!
  • Frostclaw222 · 4 months ago
This particular member of the jury is reserving judgment on Wolfriders. Yes, we've had fluff saying there are Fenrisian wolves big as Rhinos. But to my knowledge, we've never had fluff about riding any. In terms of variety, it'd be nice to see Astartes cavalry, just to break up the bike monotony. But it could set a very weird precedent, and take the dex in the wrong way. Like I said, I'm waiting to judge this one.

Claws that can either reroll to-hit or to-wound? Still need to be taken in pairs, I'd assume. I suppose this will prove very useful against high WS opponents, but it makes me wonder if this means Wolf Tooth Necklaces are gone. If so, that's sad, and it makes me wonder what other fun or unique wargear (runic charms? pelts?) has gone the way of the Squat.

Njall, Ragnar, and the Iron Priest all need new models. Bjorn could use one, too. Logan just needs to get beefed up a bit to resize him; the sculpt is awesome in and of itself.

The 30+ heads on sprue thing has me very hopeful, as long as half of them ain't wulfen. Even pulling heads from WFB, I'm starting to have to GS a lot of heads in order to not make my great company look like something out of the Spaarti cylinders of a different Emperor....

I keep hearing talk of a new tank, too, but this new sprue bit might be getting crisscrossed with the new assault cannon razorback sprue that's coming later this summer. That alone will make for a very, very nice Long Fang ride. If this is a new LR or Pred variant, there's ample precedent. I mean, our Iron Priests invented the Annihilator variant of the Predator, right? Would only seem fitting if we did something similar to the Raider chassis.

This is me going from flinching to cautiously optimistic.
