Bell of Lost Souls: 40K RUMORS: You Can Cut the Tension with a Knife

  • Blasted Scrape · 4 months ago
I just hope that whatever it is, it's not vac-formed.
  • xas · 4 months ago
    AMEN!
  • Chaosgerbil · 4 months ago
    Let's sum up the rumors:

    It's Space Hulk
    It's not Space Hulk

    Limited release
    Not a limited release

Something GW has never done before
Not something GW has never done before
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
what can we learn from this summary?

If you bitch and cry because the rhumour says something you dont like you are a complete idiot who has a masochistic penchant for "owning oneself".

Official release information "for teh win"

But thankyou BoLS... my issue is not with you bringing the "news" as I love your site, my issue is with the toddlers crying over it ;)
  • melissia · 4 months ago
Meh, not really feeling the tension myself. It'll probably be either inquisitor or marine related, regardless of what GW says, and that means it's no too interesting to me with my Sororitas/Orks/Guard armies.
  • Culial · 4 months ago
I really WANT Space Hulk...but not like this!
Not if I have to cut my fellow hobbyists throught to get my hands on it.
Not if there are so few in circulation that no-one else knows the rules.

I don't get to play 40K often these days, Space Hulk would be the perfect remedy. Easy to transport, shorter playtime, more focussed rules to keep in practice with, and still be able to use my beloved Red Scorpions minis!

Please GW, don't do this to us!
Or at least tell us if there will be an unlimited version later in the year...
  • BrassScorpion · 4 months ago
This may be one of the best, most thoughtful comments I've seen on this topic ever. I was just saying the same thing, though not so eloquently, to my spouse earlier this evening. Well, done.
  • Guytholimew · 4 months ago
Man, I am SO excited now! I don't care if it's Space Hulk or not anymore, I just want cool new models...
  • absolutionis · 4 months ago
Drawing the connection, I still believe it is a set of miniatures and stat cards for Rogue Trader and/or Dark Heresy miniatures.
It fits all the qualifications for not being race-specific and something GW has 'never' done and still fits into the 40k environment. This also helps jump-start the Rogue Trader RPG that is coming out soon.

I will be slightly upset if I'm right and this is not Space Hulk.
It will be even more disappointing if the miniatures are not 28mm, but inquisitor scale, thus being incompatible with anything useful.
  • BittenByDesign · 4 months ago
After seeing the pic and hearing that the box is not done by GW, it seems more and more likely it might be the stat cards and miniatures for the RPG. Which I don't think they have done before.

I would be bitterly disappointed if the mystery box IS space hulk as that would mean it is a one off, and not to be supported with extra stuff. (and it would see a massive ebay fight to get the few copies that exist)

Personally I see a lot of people trying to get their hands on photocopies of the rules and board sections if it is limited.
  • whitestar · 4 months ago
Why can't it be both? Rather, the "Mystery Box" might be the miniatures you speak of, but maybe Space Hulk will still be coming out? Space Hulk doesn't seem like something GW would keep as a limited release - that always bothered me about Space Hulk being the mystery box. Plus, maybe GW has legit kept it's mouth shut about something and not let out ANY rumors about it?

For being so secretive, it seems odd that everyone knows it's Space Hulk. I think the mystery box might be these minis, but they'll also do Space Hulk in the future.
  • Shin_Ra · 4 months ago
i think its has nothing to do with 40k but some weird fantasy things like apoc. for fantasy or planetstrike.
  • alfonzo54 · 4 months ago
FFG's big announcement is the new version of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Nothing to do with the Box.
  • Myu · 4 months ago
Demiurge eh? I hope that's true
  • Conrad_Dakarn · 4 months ago
Lets hear it for the short stops!

    WOOOOoooo!

    -=silence=-

    er...
  • Myu · 4 months ago
    "-=silence=-"

Bah! Read some of the other post.
  • Conrad_Dakarn · 4 months ago
I love the little guys actually. Have been working on a 5th Ed Codex for them with a few people at our local club.

Unfortuanatly, Squats seem to be like Marmite...you either love them or hate them.
  • Myu · 4 months ago
I also hope it's 40k scale and not inquisitor scale...
  • Eisenhorn · 4 months ago
Not me, I paint larger minis much better and would love more minis to use with my Inquisitor group.
  • Myu · 4 months ago
Oh ok, fair enough. I prefer the smaller models because it means I can use 40K scale scenery and the boards don't have to be as big (my group scaled down the distances to be inline with the smaller figures).

Although I agree it would make things a lot easier to paint.
  • Slawson · 4 months ago
A friend of mine used Inquisitor scale models as greater demons for his chaos army. He also used empire flagelants as demons painted in a ghostly blue and white.
  • heartbit · 4 months ago
I'm still bid for Space Hulk. I'm still remember the words of a good GW office man (not red/black shirt) friend of mine, who told me in the last months of 2008, that the're working on an ancient game for revamping it, what will made a lot of people happy, and I MUST get aware from the news, I MUST no miss it.
Pity, I lost contact with him, because is not GW anymore and move out the country.
  • Mike X · 4 months ago
Watch it be something absolutely ridiculous and mundane, like a putty knife or something.

I would laugh so hard, 'cause everyone's popping boners over this 'mystery box' like it's the second coming of Christ.
  • duder · 4 months ago
agreed, after all this over-hyping its probably going to be something not so mind blowing. This is after all a time were GW as a company is playing it safe and avoiding financial risk (read: selling what they know will be popular from past sales)
  • asymmetricalxeno · 4 months ago
I dont have any expectations, so I wont be surprised if its something I dont care for. Anything less than Epic : War in heaven or a new xeno race would be boring to me anyway..and both those things are extremely unlikely, so I wont be dissapointed.
  • waffle · 4 months ago
u say a new race would be boring but i think codex: fishmen would be freakin awesome
  • asymmetricalxeno · 4 months ago
reread my post, I said anything less than E:war in heaven *OR* a new xeno race, would be boring to me. in other words, if its not one of those two things I aint buyin'. Personally I want new 40k races, specifically non-humanoid and abstract stuff. It wont happen though. Its too liberal and weird for a miniature company.
  • whitestar · 4 months ago
I've been saying that maybe they'll announce that Tyranids will be next in line after Space Wolves. With all of the Space Hulk rumors, it's not far-fetched. Usually they come out with a boxed set near the time they update the races involved (see: Battle for Macragge, Black Reach)
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
but this box is still supposed to be something they have never done before ;)
  • Chaosgerbil · 4 months ago
That's an interesting mixed metaphor. =|
  • Mike X · 4 months ago
    It was intended.
  • BittenByDesign · 4 months ago
or like when they did the airbrush that looked like a flamer...

if it is something like that, I think a LOT of people will be disappointed!
  • dvastator · 4 months ago
I am sure they know by now that they will piss off a lot of folks if it is Space Hulk, and it is only a limited number of copies!
  • RetributionAngel · 4 months ago
Looks like a Dwarf with stormbolter to me on the pic
    freakin squads LOL
  • ds86 · 4 months ago
    Squads?

    You mean Squats 0.o

And no its a Demiurge, Squats are gone and just the mentioning of their name could bring the inquisition down on y.....
  • RetributionAngel · 4 months ago
Gone?!!... never really there?!! YES....becaus no one like them... xD

40k player wont buy dwarf or troll knockoffs...
if they wanted to...they would play fantasy

looks like this is going to be a spacehulk kind of game
    with dwarfs vs inqusition
    Dissapointing!!!
  • Bulwark · 4 months ago
40k player wont buy orc or elf knockoffs...
if they wanted to...they would play fantasy
  • Anonannoyed · 4 months ago
Long debunked. Squats sold as well as other non-marine lines. They were discontinued because none of the developers could come up with ideas or enthusiasm for them in 2nd edition.

All the squat-hate since then is mostly manufactured. Attempts at being fancool combined with the bleating of the herd.
  • RetributionAngel · 4 months ago
Yeah but dwarfs are classic rpg chars...they cary big axes or hammers...in fantasy they also build guns
just giveing them a stormbolter does not make em an alien race in 40k.
Translation is possible...but then you wont have the axe swinging berseker dwarf anymore. I don´t think people would buy that. If you look a the Squats figs in 2nd ED they looked laughable...nothing like fearsome warriors. Back then GW claimed that they would be worked on & comeing out soon...but they never did.
GW is clearly testing out the market with this X-box. They are aware that dwarfs are no cifi charackters.

Orks & Eldar have been around for a bit & do mix in with the 40k fluff. Along with SM & CSM orks + eldar are the main races of 40k. New races have never been exepted that well from all of the 40k community. Also should new races not really be new races...??? instead of fantasy translations. Look at Nids or Tau they are both more successfull than Necrons or DE, becaus they were NEW races when they came out.

If Squats find enough fans they might make there way to the 40k millenium... but lets hope not! xD
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
of course no one likes them... its not as though my mate angus still fields them for anything upto 5000 points or anything....of course not....
  • RetributionAngel · 4 months ago
Does he play them AS squats?
With what codex then... there never was a Squat codex as far as i know.
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
He does indeed play them as squats... there isnt much more you can do with a bunch of space dwarves
and as for what codex? his own, a bunch of us helped write and playtest it for 3rd edition based on some
old bits and pieces mixed with a fair amount of common sense and we have since updated it for each
new edition, changed and tweaked stuff... an while it is just a set of rules and not a book that hides its rules
in short stories, it only took us 2 months to sort it the first time around from scratch then a week to redo
it per new edition. If we wanted to fluff it out into a "Codex" then that could have easily been done during
the 2 month initial writeup.... which leaves us wondering why GW are so damn lazy when it comes to codexes.
  • RetributionAngel · 4 months ago
They are lazy becaus they get paid for it ^^

Thats a fair way to do it... just wright your own codex. But you will be doing loads of conversions &/or casting.

    Still i don´t need dwarfs in 40k.
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
you make doing lots of conversions sound like bad thing...
besides most of his force are first edition squats ^^
throw in a few tamiya apc kits and so on and jobs a good 'un
  • Conrad_Dakarn · 4 months ago
    Squats had a Codex...kinda...
I've got the Dwarf with it in as well as the black and white "multi" codex that came with 2nd edition and had Squats in as one of the many armies....including the original Sisters of Battle
  • RetributionAngel · 4 months ago
Yes the Black codex had a lot of cool armys...but i don´t consider space-dwarfs as one of them.
Why can´t GW do Renegade Militia or more of the Adeptus armys or just something complettly new and inovativ. If Squats do come..whats next
    space-lizardmen,
    space-vampires,
    space-beastmen
    space-ratmen
    space-woodelves
    space-BRETONIANS ?!!!
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
As an addendum tyranids have been in 40k since the early days, I have the miniatures sat on my desk awaiting ink washes. and squats were originally a complete force so they have already "made their way into the 40k universe"

besides... they owuldnt need to release "new" races as there are many in the 40k universe that dont have models and stuff ^^
  • RetributionAngel · 4 months ago
But back then it was small armys...almost no vihicles. For me 40k is about big Wars with lots of Tanks and maybe titans. I don´t really see dwarfs fighting titans ever.
Theres a reason why the Nid-cultist and Squats got droped. GW is a bissunes they sell what ever brings profit and that what doesn´t gets droped.
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
sounds like you need to play epic more lol...
and if space elves and living fungus beasts can play with
tanks and titans then why not vertically challenged people ;)
  • RetributionAngel · 4 months ago
epic suck....apoc with 10k points up is the real deal ^^
  • Conrad_Dakarn · 4 months ago
Squats ain't gone....they're never got rid of them just written that they were destroyed by Hive Fleet Leviathan.

Leaked concept sketches and this latest "plastic" model would seem to suggest the possibility of a re-release of Demiurge/Squats in some form or another....as an army, maybe not but they could introduce them small scale first to test the attraction to the little guys.

It wouldn't take much imagination or writing for GW to bring back the Squats....they've already got half the story with the Demiurge in Battlefleet Gothic.

    ----edit-----
Oh yeah...and people seem to have forgotten about GW announcing they're working on releasing a "new" race soon.
  • duder · 4 months ago
    that announcement was chaos dwarfs
  • Myu · 4 months ago
Demiurg would be cool anyways. I like the models, though hopefully they'll become more pose-able.
  • Conrad_Dakarn · 4 months ago
They announced it would be a new race though....Chaos dwarfs has never really been removed to my knowledge only set back further and further.

Squats, for all intensive purposes were removed.
  • 03bbrevenge · 4 months ago
looking at the sprue in the middle right of the picture I get the feeling that the minis are 40k scale, the demiurge behind it looks to be mounted on a 25mm round unless the inquisitor scale have slotted bases. If that is the contents of the mystery box im gonna want alot more then just a few figs, since its supposed to cost around 710 bucks. Plus Space hulk is relatively easy for them to redo, they currently have snap fit termies and genestealers.
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
710 bucks? the market really has bombed then between UK and US if £50 sterling (the long rhumoured price for this box) is equivalent to $710 US lol
  • RTM · 4 months ago
Those are wine corks for the heresy figs. I am probably not the only one on this forum who knows how big a wine cork is.

As for the Mystery Box, I have v1 and v2 space hulk. I look forward to whatever v they want to call it. Space hulk is still a good game! Buuuut, if I'm wrong, I hope I am "new plastic Hrud boxed set" wrong, or even better, "new plastic arbiters and Judges" wrong. Oooh, tent raising all around.
  • Myu · 4 months ago
    tent raising?
  • Chaosgerbil · 4 months ago
Myu, sometimes it is better not to know.
  • Anonannoyed · 4 months ago
The number of wanking metaphors and outright references in the average WH rumor post just gave me an unfortunate insight. I think I've finally placed "that smell" that hovers around the group at the FLGS.
  • Myu · 4 months ago
"Myu, sometimes it is better not to know."

    I agree heartily
  • asymmetricalxeno · 4 months ago
Plastic Hrud would make me cream my pants. Especially if they had some Umbra buddies to hang out with.
  • alessander · 4 months ago
Umbra models? you mean black marbles?
  • asymmetricalxeno · 4 months ago
black marbles with horrific tendrills, claws and mouths. Look at the artwork of them fighting smurfs in Xenology.
  • LEGION3000 · 4 months ago
Ah yes Xenology, the worst GW reference since "My brother's best friend knows a guy..."
  • Snyderson · 4 months ago
That just made my day... :D
  • asymmetricalxeno · 4 months ago
And whys that ? because it actually delves into *interesting* aliens that arent the atypical conservative bipeds the masses lap up, or because your a boring necron player ?
  • TentaclePornBaby · 4 months ago
Legion3000 seems like a very boring person. I find it a shame that so many Sci-Fi fans and especially 40K fans are so conservative and unimaginative. What is so wrong with adding to the mythos? What is so bad with unusual beings and strange homeworlds? That is what Sci-Fi/Cosmic Horror should be about. Doing things that cannot be done in other genres or mediums, pushing the boundaries and exploring new territory. 40K needs more references like Xenology not less.
If you just want a bunch of bipeds why not just become a historical wargamer? I really don't get it.
  • b_G · 4 months ago
They're doing an official box opening and build in my local on Monday at lunch time. Its going to be the first time anyone in the store, staff included has seen whatever it is, and they'll be taking pre-orders at the same time.
    I'm already booked in.
  • jon · 4 months ago
I'll say what I've said elsewhere, if the Demiurge are space minors who live on big space mining ships...maybe the ship is being invaded by genestealers :)
...they look preetty snap fit :)
  • Coffee · 4 months ago
Space, "minors?" I think the Powers That Be would take exception to children being violated by Genestealers. :P
  • jon · 4 months ago
now timmy, ... show us on the teddy where the savage, flesh hungry space monster touched you !!! ha ha :)
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
Now Mr Genestealer, you do realise it is a criminal offence to touch minors in inappropriate locations and especially without theirs, or their legal guardian's consent to touch them at all?
    How do you plead?

    "Genocide"

Mr Genestealer, this court finds you guilty on all charges of molesting Demiurg children and has sentenced you to 25 years imprisonment in the nearest uninhabited spacehulk headed for the Ultramar system with no option for parole.

Project Xbox? Good grief. I also hope it's something lame, like, I dunno, a new 'feeble Imperial peasant' model for inquisitor. There'll be the grand opening, people will already have spent a ton of effort reserving their 'Xbox', and then there's the grand reveal. Gleeful, excited expressions chenge to puzzlement, and after a painfully long silence, someone finally asks 'What the fu

OMG OMG OMG - forget Space Hulk!

    DEMIURG!!!!
I can't believe they have actually made a model - I had been told that FW had been forbidden from making any type of 'dwarf analogue in space'. What does this signify?!
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
Nothing at all... Forgeworld are a part of Games Workshop and any form of "space dwarf" revival should come directly from the parent company, not its subsidiaries.
  • Ahriman · 4 months ago
In my local store it's not called the "Mystery Box" it's called the "Mystery Game" - i suspect that it is Space Hulk, but the staff are adamantly tight lipped!!

Was chatting with my local GW shop guy the other day....he was wearing the "Everything you've been told is a lie" T-shirt but said that he knows nothing about this box, neither does our manager. They know it's coming but nothing beyond that.

He's also confirmed that several members of staff HAVE been fired for revealing things to do with this box.
  • UltramarineFan · 4 months ago
GW staff are TOLD to exagerate things like that, when there is a mystery thing like this GW want to fan the flames of rumour into much wilder ideas; it just makes it more likely that people will hear about it and want to buy it.
  • BittenByDesign · 4 months ago
and give them ideas about what else would sell well to the gamers.... ;-)
  • Chaosgerbil · 4 months ago
If that is true we can expect to see squa-- I mean demiurgs pretty soon. Sigh.

    Fix 40k first, GW!
  • duder · 4 months ago
haha total myth hes telling your tall tales my friend
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
Never believe anything you hear from anyone in GW....and I mean ANYONE! if you want a 100% dodgy rhumour, cite a GW worker as your source lol GW promise "to tell none of the truth, part of the truth or everything but the truth so help me god" ;)
  • Conrad_Dakarn · 4 months ago
The guys at our store a pretty solid for telling truths actually. Most the time our manage couldn't give a crap about anything any ways...hence why I've already got a copy of Planetary Empires....

As for the guy I spoke to, he's so laid back, he's nearly in his grave. He really doesn't care about spinning things or hyping stuff up. If he says people have been fired....that's what he knows. He may have been told exaggerations but I highly doubt he'd tell me that to hype this thing up.

By the by....it will be announced this Monday in our store.
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
And a laid back person with enough charisma could tell you that your purple socks are really
green and that you need to get your eyes checked with sufficient conviction that you would

I'm not saying your guy is actually lying or exaggerating, all I am saying is that its their job ;)

    Mystery Box is SPACE HULK

Confirmed from the local Store they got quite a few pieces
Most were reserved as well I hope I can get mine !

So ye, wtf was the "Something we never done before .." bullcrap anyway ? lol
    GW are weirdos
  • Conrad_Dakarn · 4 months ago
Space Hulk isn't the mystery box...it's being released but it's not the box.

I know this because our store manager is holding a competition for people to paint either a Genestealer or Terminator for the release of Space Hulk. Yet he also said that the Mystery Box will be announced in store on Monday.

Why would he confirm Space Hulk and then say the Box would be announced Monday?
  • UltramarineFan · 4 months ago
After reading an almost unseemly number of refernces to the areas inside or near people's underwear I have concluded that I don't think it's space hulk, what it is though I have no idea but if anything comes from GW staff then I would be unlikely to believe them.
  • duder · 4 months ago
I swear every time there's a rumor discussion i can't help and groan and roll my eyes when anyone begins a post with "I was talking to my local GW reps today...."

almost 99% of time the following information is either completely false or pulled word for word from more reliable rumor sources
  • Chaosgerbil · 4 months ago
Yeah I had a red shirt once tell me that an ork warboss kit was coming that would be the size of a daemon prince. This was in 2007. Pure BS.
  • Sathos · 4 months ago
I once had a red shirt tell me that Forgeworld were working on the primarchs and the emperor as a series of life-sized statues...
I once had a black shirt tell me that GW was branching out into children's cereals by buying out Kellogs and putting a plastic miniature in every box of cereal.
  • Chaosgerbil · 4 months ago

As somebody who is very good at body language and lie detection, I can say with confidence that after a conversation with staff at our local workshop I think it is Space hulk......This new statement that all the staff in various games workshops are robotically repeating “It is not what you think it is” is a very poor attempt by Gw to keep the rumour mill turning. Don’t get me wrong, the marketing people at Gw have defiantly produced interest in this product; even people that don’t buy stuff from Gw are interested.
I just hope its 3D plastic corridors 
