That long top-knotted hair is very "1980s female aerobics instructor."
  • Gotthammer · 4 months ago
I think they need to unchain Jes from his desk so he can go outside and see hairstyles have advanced a tad. Still, removed easily enough :)

More leg poses and arm arrangements are always a good thing.
  • HerbTarlek · 4 months ago
Jes obviously is longing for days of flowing hair.

this is the problem right here! Jes Goodwin does not model Space Marines anymore. Looks like these were done by some of the recent "painter turned sculptor" people from the 'eavy Metal team. Bad. Maybe the metal characters will be a little better.
  • ReverendTiberiusJackhammer · 4 months ago
Heh, top-knots seem to be the most common hairstyle in the 41st millennium. Orks have them, Chaos has them, Wolves have them, the Eldar and their Dark brothers have them, some Daemons have them, the Inquisition has a couple of top-knotties, the Tau have Shadowsun, and it looked like the Space Marines were going to be clear of the hairstyle, until the Mk 1 armour marine made his way into the collector's range. I'm half expecting the Tyranids to receive a Top-Knot biomorph in their next codex. Just why is the top-knot such a common hairstyle in the Wh40k? It boggles the mind!
  • UltramarineFan · 4 months ago
Well, if they don't have their hair tied in some way it looks like sigvald and isn't warrior like enough. And what other styles could they give them; a Mohawk? Actually better not ask.
  • mithril · 4 months ago
given the norse/Viking influence on the Space Wolves, Braids would have made sense. or long wild hair.
  • Dr Henry Killinger · 4 months ago
From a sculpting perspective, giving a bare head a ponytail or other long-hair style would restrict how it can be positioned when putting the model together. The topknot is easier because it doesn't go down interfere with the neck joint.

The topknot also seems to be a relatively new hairstyle in the 41st Millennium. Apart from Ragnar and Abaddon, I can't really think of any 'old' models that had them. They came out on Chaos, Space Wolves and Orks with the plastic sprues, though there have been a number of plumed helmets (such as the Mk1). I think Mohawks and Flat-top styles have been far more common.

Here is the text that goes with the top pic; it's from the latest newsletter.

    Incoming! Space Wolves

The Space Wolves were one of the first Space Marine Chapters founded by the Emperor; fierce and barbaric heroes of legend who charge fangs bared into the teeth of the enemy. In October, this Chapter of ferocious warriors is being re-launched with a brand-new Codex and range of Citadel Miniatures.

As a newsletter subscriber, we thought you should be among the first to catch a glimpse of the all-new Space Wolves.

    Space Wolf Grey Hunter
This stunning Grey Hunter has been assembled using the forthcoming multi-part plastic box set; just one of the fantastic new Space Wolf sets coming in October!
  • khazadvarn · 4 months ago
cant say i like that model at all looks like a snap fit guy with fur attached hopefully the images will improve.
  • LordSandwich · 4 months ago
I'm guessing that's just the angle of the pic. It looks like he's got a fair bit of movement in his legs.
  • Vepr · 4 months ago
Not a fan. To be fair though I have not been a big fan of the wolves since 2nd.
  • Blackmane · 4 months ago
i'm liking what i'm seeing so far, can't wait to see what the updated characters will look like, hopefully better than Vulkan He'stan
  • depl · 4 months ago
Maybe it's just me, but his thighs seem too thin.
  • mike · 4 months ago
yeah, apparently space wolves only bench and curl.
  • poochute · 4 months ago
being a rehab specialist i LOL'd so so so so so hard at that.
  • lonestar394 · 4 months ago
They only seem thin simply because the designer of the marine armour hoped against hope that both knee pads and flairs would be comming back into fashion!
  • daniello_s · 4 months ago
    ehhh... another space marines codex...
  • bhsman · 4 months ago
Digging the mohawk on that Blood Claw
  • Asymmetrical Xeno · 4 months ago
cant say I like it - im not saying its a bad sculpt, its not. But the face looks like a Cockney-murderer, the hair looks goofy, the legs and body look strangely thin (allthough that might just be the angle/picture), and it really isnt that special, I'd of hoped they'd go further with making chapters with their own codex look much more unique ect..but from that it just looks like a skinnier marine with bad hair/facial hair, and a bit of fluff and a few SW logos here and there..could of been much more IMO. I doubt my Space Wolf friend will be buying these if the rest are like it..guess we'll have to wait till October (hopefully ill be wrong though about my views!).
  • Lamenter · 4 months ago
I know it's early days but I'm not impressed so far.
  • kriegfreak · 4 months ago
Not impressed really. I'm all for space marines, but a Xenos should have been out before this.
  • whitestar · 4 months ago
    Dark Eldar next?
  • Engelus · 4 months ago
Dark eldar are the next logical xenos release, however, thier entire model range needs to be redone, not just recut. whereas Wolves just need a few upgrade sprues, 2 or 3 metal characters and they are done.
  • BigGrim · 4 months ago
Nothin' like beating a dead horse.

After these guys (who really needed an update) I'm hoping next year will be completely Xenos. That'd rock.
  • Vodski · 4 months ago
It looks like the legs are thin because the whole image has been cut out
  • Keeno79 · 4 months ago
Got to say I'm not a fan of those at all. I was quite looking forward to potentially doing a wolves army but if thats the general look and feel then I'll wait until DE
  • flamingfaith · 4 months ago
What a bunch of moaners. Take a look at both models. If they were any more covered in fur they would be cousin it. Wolves look set to become more barbaric than ever. And besides not living up to expectation for a lot of you what would you have changed?
  • Armiger84 · 4 months ago
Decent paint jobs on crappy plastics. I want my 3rd Ed. sprues back.
  • HerbTarlek · 4 months ago
We are most certainly in the 90 day "I HATEZ IT" window, I will be recording for posterity all those HATORZ, who will, after Codex release, be swooning for grey and wolves.
  • Anon · 4 months ago
The model is ugly. Unless we all drink for the next 90 days I doubt anything will change that.
  • BittenByDesign · 4 months ago
topknot is a bit out of date with where all the other army designs have moved on to.

But, I am liking the skull feature pieces in the backpack. That is certainly a bit I can bring in to my generic space marine chapter.

Hopefully the talk of the sprue having 30+ heads means there was only one or two with silly hair. And its plastic after all, so it wouldn't be too hard to do a bit of chop and carve on it.
  • frostclaw222 · 4 months ago
More bareheads and totemic pelts and whatnot = good.

My problem with the topknots comes from a lazy modeler perspective. The lean and flow of the topknot will dictate motion in a more dynamic pose, and if it flows contrary or even just out-of-whack from the rest of the pose's motion, that means snip and reglue, which means fiddly bits that could break.

But if 30+ heads means a few with topknots, you know what? I'm game. The rest of the model looks like it has lots of optional doodads that I'll be able to take and make some more nice looking Wolves with.

My only issue with the model is the "thinness" mentioned before. Could that be a result of either lighting + paintjob or whoever published the pic having copied the height dimensions a smidge out of relation to the width?
  • Catzilla · 4 months ago
    Skull backpacks...Mortifactors anyone? :)
  • Guytholimew · 4 months ago
Haha, I actually quite like the look of these models so far.

I know, far out comment, right?

Honestly, he looks like he could do some proper charging with his better-defined legs. It's as if the vanilla marines have thick legs so they can stay planted and do the gun-wall thing nad not move whilst taking loads of punishment, and these guys can do some hard-core running, rolling and jumping antics. And I like the details like his sideburns and canines. A fair bit more characterful so far than Dark Angels, that's for sure.
  • IAMANAME · 4 months ago
I'm sooo stoked for this. I'm especially glad that the wolves will still be blue/gray, rather than the awful codex gray color scheme. It seems much more space marine that they would be a bold bright color. Looks badass even with the dopey topknot, I hope we get some grizzled bearded long fang heads though!
  • poochute · 4 months ago
I'm almost 100% sure they stole those legs from Buzz Lightyear.

    To The Fang and beyond!!!
  • Woody · 4 months ago
    You're not a Space Wolf, you're a toy! T! O! Y! TOY!
  • Mike X · 4 months ago
I don't like the new Space Wolf teaser model at all. The backpack seems pretty cool though, I dig the double skulls.

And yeah, the topknot needs to go. It's way overdone in the 40K universe, and really isn't a very cool hairstyle to begin with.

I don't know about Britain's pop-history, but I've been alive in America since 1983, and can't ever remember a time when topknots were considered attractive or badass.
  • tarod · 4 months ago
    never been fashionable over here
  • captforrix · 4 months ago
Eh, I think they're decent. Although my unenthusiastic opinion might just be because I don't play or particularly like Space Wolves. But the model is decent, and I can see some pretty fun and cool opportunities for a nice kit-bash.

The topknot looks good from a quality look, but for Space Wolves I'd think they'd be going for wolfs tails over topknots. Topknots seem too, i dunno, Abbadonish...
  • Shrek · 4 months ago
Notice that the space wolf is holding the bolter with both hands? Guess no more true grit?
  • Crazy Legsā„¢ · 4 months ago
His lip looks a little chapped. Don't they have Blistex in the far future?

Seriously, I'm not hating the model, though I was hoping for more of an upgrade kit to add to the existing marine range rather than brand new boxes. But I suppose if a box of Grey Hunters costs the same as a Tactical Squad then it's better than buying the tactical squad as well as the upgrade box.
  • Spud · 4 months ago
I thought Space Wolves were grey.
  • Mike X · 4 months ago
The Space Wolves color scheme has always been a dull baby blue, but pretty close to grey.
  • Gotthammer · 4 months ago
Except for the start of RT, when they were actually a very light grey (astronomican grey is a good match).

    I am a 2nd edition spacewolf/eldar player. I have been waiting for the new codex and wishing for upgrades to the current range of models. I am very disappointed if these are the new style of figures that are to replace the current box sets. If you look at the 2nd edition and rouge trader marines design and then look at the legs and arms of these new releases you will see that the modeling is going back in time not forward. IMO the legs, specifically the thighs, are too small for the calves. If the models thigh armor was to support the entire upper torso then it would be under a ton of strain. The calf looks up to the challenge of supporting the suit while providing adequate armor, but the entire portion above the knee looks slimmer and thin. much to thin for a full thigh to be placed inside of armor with any thickness to it. I am being to picky I guess. I know I couldn't sculpt a better one myself so I will have to live with it. I just wish that true scale marines and vehicles would make its way onto the scene. Oh to hope, dream, and wish. While I am wishing I may as well ask for a Horus Heresy Movie series to be put into action as well...bad@$$! :-}
  • Wolfy_Molder · 4 months ago
i think he looks great, i mean hey, you can say "he looks ugly wah wah" dude! he's a space wolf! these guys are supposed to look like they rested their faces on a belt sander or something, if you want a pretty army go play eldar, or damn, even sisters of the battle, I'll be happy as long as i get a good number of non top knotted heads with the top knotted ones, and because the upgrade sprue apparantly has 30 heads on it, i think i won't be disapointed, and another thing, they said they are updating the WHOLE RANGE, lol we've seen two and you are already complaining? yikes, and about the "jeez another marine army" SW haven't had a dex for 9 years or so they deserve a new one as much as anyone else, and yeah, i'll admit, dark eldar have been punted down the list yet again, but are you really surprised? they are almost the new squats! i personally think they are much cooler than squats and i do beleive that sometime down the track dark eldar will receive a new dex, maybe the reason why it is taking so long is because they are putting alot of effort into them? maybe they are adding a few nice snazzy units or something?

Sorry, ranting i know, this is what V and boredom does to you kids, don't end up like me haha
  • Sternhammer · 4 months ago
Hair is so easy to sculpt. Just chop the top knot off and give the model long hair. I've done this with wolves before - now you only get 5 head variants, so you need variety. The trick is not to make it too long so it interferes with the backpack. Half a peanut sized blob of GS will do.

"Finally, the last of the "add-on" non-stand-alone codices falls."

Except for Daemon Hunters and Witch Hunters of course.

Oh and Lost and the Damned, which now points to TWO OOP codexes.
  • masterslowpoke · 4 months ago
DH and WH are stand-alone. You can take allies but it's not necessary.
  • daveisdvd · 4 months ago
LATD need their own codex!!! Even if it is only free to download PDF.

I'm working on one. Here's the most recent version:

    http://chaosgerbil.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/...

    Here's the blog for it:
    http://chaosgerbil.wordpress.com/

    I'd love more feedback.
  • Anon · 4 months ago
Well, I likes it, but it could do with a few more squadrons. I would imagine that although LATD may lose far more tanks due to lack of repair skill, you need to account for disciplined armies such as Blood Pact that have the expertise to field full regiments. Also, the Mutant Overlord needs to lose the option for a power fist or weapon, and become a monstrous creature. Or you can tone down the stats a bit. For his points cost, he's a bit over powered. You need to lose the Jealous Gods rule, otherwise you'll exclude all the undivided players who want to balance things out. Also, there needs to be a limit on CSM squad sizes (maybe limit them to 10 man instead of 20). And Penal Legions should be a part of the main list as opposed to a every 500 points unit, seeing as you would expect followers of Chaos to know more dirty tricks etcetera. Rant over, hope it helps, and I sincerely look forward to seeing the final version. Everything else is absolutely fantastic, so keep up the awesome work :D
  • daveisdvd · 4 months ago
Hmmmm it is interesting. Would like to see the command options influence the armies abilities a bit more. I agree with Anon, it needs to have a more flexible feel to reflect the huge variance of chaos renegades that exist.
An example would be the "rouge trader" option. He might allow the army to have squadrons of vehicles or allow the use of valkyries and vultures. The commander to me would dictate the feel of the army whether he be a deranged psychotic lunatic or a well regimented sinister warlord.

    Good luck.
  • Chaosgerbil · 4 months ago
Thank you to both. Great feedback.

For disciplined armies such as blood pact, using the IG codex intact seems like a better option. Also, keep in mind some of the restrictions are there for balance as much as for fluff.

The Mutant overlord will get reworked.

Penal squads will get taken off the restricted list, it is not like they are a huge power unit.

Jealous gods... this is another fluff plus rules balance restriction, but I could see taking it out in the interest of including undivided forces.

From what I hear, the bigger threat from Chaos Marines is squads of up to ten in Rhinos, so I'm not sure a big group option messes things up. Also, Word Bearers have it in their fluff that they have large squads. I can see your point though.

Special Characters are on their way, and I will do my best to cost them appropriately. Some will allow for different army builds like in the newer codexes. I'll probably give a choice in the HQ section, like generic rogue trader vs. special one with better gear and a special rule or two.
  • hrudboy · 4 months ago
He looks more like a Luna Wolf to me. Thinking of using some parts for my chaos army
  • daveisdvd · 4 months ago
I can't say that I am overly impressed or that I see the need to redesign the kit.... but that is just me.

Having said that, being a puppy player since their first codex, I am happy to see them being brought back up to speed.

Look forward to seeing some excellent new models and rules to match.

Yee-Haw! The Wolves are FINALLY getting the update they deserve! These models look GREAT! The diamond chest gem, dripping with runes and wolf pelts. Plus wolf icones, teeth on the Blood Claws greaves, the heads look great IMO, the trim on the Grey Hunters greaves and backpack (along with the skulls). I am a very happy Wolf player. I've been playing these guys since Rogue Trader. I can't wait for more images of these guys and, frankly, October cannot come fast enough!

New Imperial Guard upcoming pack - some sort of sentinel squadron. My guess is two of the new squadron in one box, maybe two but i doubt it from the price.
You can find the title and price on www.scifigenre.com under Games:Miniatures:Games Workshop:Warhammer 40k:Imperial Guard: Catachans. there is a green "P" next to it for pre-order - however all the site really offers is a price $49.50

These look more like Luna Wolves than Space Wolves to me. The Space Wolves should subtly look like transforming Werewolves or have elements of Vikings and Dwarfs mixed in.
  • fleshtuxedo · 4 months ago
I would say, on par, not a strong design, if this is the marketing shot that is to get us drooling... meh.
I would specifically point out two things that bother me more than topknots and teeth.

    (1) Is it me, or has the horizon of the shoulder armor dropped, making his head stand taller --> this is bad because now guardsmen will look just as "imposing"
    (2) also - the new "curve" to the shoulderpad rims, though stylized, looks a little like a weak play at sneaking in some new ways to differntiate your horde of plastics. - ditto that on the meaningless banding added to the armor on the legs and backpack?
  • fleshtuxedo · 4 months ago
also, in regards to the legs looking thin,
have you notices the same from your "battle of hells reach" marines? I have, often, new trainee sculptors are brought in and make variations off of existing model stock/ be it 3-ups for plastic, or new digital sculptors on new frames. this was done with the most recent relaunch of chaos tactical marines and the chaos terminators.
  • grimgorn · 4 months ago
i think new 'Wolf anything is good. if they follow the premise of the Black Templar/Dark Angles upgrade sprues then i know what i'm doing with all my left over Space Marine parts from my 13th army. finish my Space Wolf army from back in the day!!

the picture doesn't look that great, however i'll leave any judgement until i see the bits themselves. this wouldn't be the first time a good model didn't look good from angle of the picture.
