Bell of Lost Souls: 40K SNEEK PEEK: Planetstrike Cover & Vulkan

  • Ryan · 7 months ago
That Vulkan's looking pretty sweet. Though his spear arm looks a little to inwardly facing and seems to crowd the model.

I'm a bit iffy about Planetstrike. Need to learn more to get an opinion.
  • Miami · 7 months ago
Check out Warseer. Just like with the IG codex, The Dude has a pretty good summary of what is "known" so far. Some pretty interesting things, I think.
  • nurglespuss · 7 months ago
OK,... that Vulkan is pretty busy-busy, if that were a conversion on cool mini or the like, people would complain it was too cluttered, or that the one handed spear/underslung wrist gun, just looks very awkward on that model.....
  • Andrew · 7 months ago
I agree with nurglepuss, very cluttered. I have a 16 yr old at my club that has made a better Vulkan..
  • UltramarineFan · 7 months ago
Same I have to say that I've seen better conversions and although my own isn't great I have to say that it's not as cluttered as their Vulkan. For a model with really cool equipment and a nice fluff the model itself is surprisingly, well, bad.
  • PrimaryIterator · 7 months ago
I agree that the Vulkan's nice, but not amazing. Perhaps this is because there have been a lot of good conversions of him already the real model seems a little underwhelming? I think the model's good (and the painting there's great), but am also not sure about the spear-arm.

I wonder whether the head is a separate piece? I had a thought that the artwork showed a slightly older-style helmet, but may be misremembering.
  • FabricatorGeneral · 7 months ago
Let's wait to judge when we get the 360 and can see the different posing options.
  • Miami · 7 months ago
Agreed on the waiting... I'm willing to bet that it's more the awkward camera angle more than anything else. It looks like the arms are further away from the body than it appears on first inspection.
  • DeathscytheHell · 7 months ago
    WoW sweet Stuff
    and first post yay
    cant wait
    nevermind i just got beat
    lol :(
  • GuyLeDouche · 7 months ago
That's a shame, you missed out on all the fame and riches that come with being the first person to reply to a blog post.
  • Mike X · 7 months ago
Planetstrike appears to be another "oversized" book like Apocalypse.

Not sure if I really dig the Vulkan model. It's alright.
  • DeathscytheHell · 7 months ago
yea now looking at it the flame on back looks kinda lame and the model is too crowded it should have been made more dynamic in pose
  • Mike X · 7 months ago
Well, from what I've heard, Vulkan carries all of the artifacts of the Salamanders as wargear/weapons... so that's why he's overcrowded. However, it makes him look really encumbered and uncomfortable.
  • DeathscytheHell · 7 months ago
that's a heavy burden to bear
    lol
i hope his helmet is separate cuz i want it
  • Mr.P · 7 months ago
I'd like to think the his encumbered look is because of the extra insulation he has on his suit being that he's constantly on fire. With all those twin linked Meltas and Flamers he brings to the fight it's bound to get pretty hot.
  • snotgun · 7 months ago
Yeah, another "bigger wars" expansion that I don't give an eff about... I'd rather keep playing Epic and get a whole army including titans and stuff for the price of a single superheavy in 40K
  • Miami · 7 months ago
You apparently give enough of an eff to publicly state you don't give an eff...

This is supposedly an expansion for the regular game (as well as apocalypse). It focuses more on set-up and deployment, making games more "attacker/defender" as opposed to the standard "equal ground" style.

Pretty much, they're trying to diversify the way 40K is played, which in my mind is more than welcome whatever the scale.
  • phaze24 · 7 months ago
i agree that model looks over crowded...i dig mine lol
  • Randy St. George · 7 months ago
That model looks over crowded because of the cape, it'll look better in person. Still a badass model
  • LordSandwich · 7 months ago
And I thought Mannfred von Carstein was cluttered...
  • Drop Trooper · 7 months ago
I like the mini acturally, I wouldn't use him, but the helmet is nice, true.
  • StephenK · 7 months ago
    It's spelled "sneak".
  • manton · 7 months ago
i thought Vulkan looked crowded too, but if you look a bit closer, the reason he looks weird is because unlike all the other spear-wielding 40k models, he's holding the spear in an under-arm way, much like a javeline, like he's about to throw it at some poor sod. having figured that out i think he looks fantastic because it means he is a uniquely posed character model.
as for planetstrike, it just looks like the CoD book to me. ss in it's obviously a different book, but it doesn't look too stupidly oversized.
any word on a release date?
  • Honsou · 7 months ago
The arm doesn't really match the rest of the pose. If he was about to throw, he'd probably be holding the spear higher up and have a bit more movement in the pose. That model is more static, so would look better holding the spear at ease. Though it's probably a separate piece so some simple chopping can fix that.
  • Lordofstuff12 · 7 months ago
I agree. I even really like the rest of the model alot, but that is not how you hold a spear to thrust or throw. And I know a bit about spears (SCA combat is my other hobby) and an underhand grip with a spear single handed like that is terrible, unless your fighting with the shaft resting on your shoulder. Not to mention that thrusting across the body like that loses part of the reach advantage a spear would give you.
  • Epps · 7 months ago
That Vulkan looks like an overbuilt swiss army knife.

Completely ridiculous. I've seen a half-dozen scratchbuilds that look better than that.
  • Kris · 7 months ago
That vulkan looks good, but as others have said a bit cluttered. I think if the pose of his arm can be changed, perhaps holding the spear at attention or angling the fist out a bit more, it might be better. The sigil on the back looks odd, but could be probably be changed or left off, or just given a better paint job.
  • Krull · 7 months ago
Is that anew type of guard army I see there?
  • Lord Gir of Irk · 7 months ago
the guard army is valhallans. perhaps a vostroyan style limited release?
  • Rodney · 7 months ago
Nah those are straight up Steel Legion zapping xenos scum in the face in the name of the emperor.
  • Lord Gir of Irk · 7 months ago
check out the guy on the far right, he's got the ruski-hat and the shoulder-slung blanket and all. and no re-breather, though i'm sure Steel Legion have fought without them at least once in their illustrious career.
  • RealGenius · 7 months ago
I think you mean flashlights plinking off Xeno armor as the Guard prepare to turn and run!

Glad to see my Eldar getting some GW cover art love. I don't know the artist, but I recognize the style from other pieces and he/she is one of my favorite from GW.

I especially like the Striking Scorpion and CCW Guard guy both in their wind-up about to strike. Reminds me of the old rule "strike blows simultaneously with defenders" (in cover), even though that really wouldn't apply to Eldar with plasma grenades, but whatever! Cool art.
  • nick · 7 months ago
nice source of bits, but not a model I am looking forward to.

I for one will be doing my own now that I have seen the official one.

Oversized book again? Oh well, no drama. I am off to see the dudes round up.
  • Gibbtall · 7 months ago
HotneEEEEESSSS!! :P Seems like GW is finaly painting fire CORRECTLY.

He may be cluttered a bit, but I think it adds to the BEEFY armoury type that Sally collanders should be known for.
  • ThatGuyWhoChecksBSLTooMuc · 7 months ago
I spy with my little eye...a metric ton of Eldar. I wonder what role they'll play in the whole...invading of planets. And the attacking of guardsmen. Perhaps new Eldar stuff is near?
  • Forhekset · 7 months ago
I don't know why people keep on insisting that artwork has anything to do with anything.

It's just a painting for a cover of a book.
  • m1n3rv4 · 7 months ago
There is that rumour of new Eldar stuff though...but yeah I love the cover!
  • The True Mooseman · 7 months ago
Maybe because of how Cities of Death had the Vostroyans and the (then) recently released Tau.
Or how Apocalypse had both a Baneblade and a Stompa, both fairly accurately drawn to their eventual minis.
Or how one half of this cover contains soon-to-be-released Guard.
    Just sayin'...
  • Iop · 7 months ago
Whats those guards, they are looking pretty cool tho, sort of DKOK/Steel Legion/Valhal all in one^^
  • Yamagon · 7 months ago
hmm... that sure does sound like greatcoat rumors there. Maybe they are making ambiguous guard that can be converted into many.

    here is hoping!
  • The True Mooseman · 7 months ago
Looking at the more detailed scan, they are definitely Valhallans. God damn it, if they come out in plastic I'll never be able to afford anything ever again!
  • SinnerBeta · 7 months ago
Please God, let there be something for Inquisition.
  • Mike X · 7 months ago
    What's the Inquisition? ;P
  • Alex.B · 7 months ago
    Ordo Malleus
  • nomoreroominhell · 7 months ago
    Ordo whaticus?
  • Rift Knight · 7 months ago
Ordo Malleus is 1/3 of the Inquisition, add in Ordo Hereticus (Witch Hunters), and Ordo Xenos ( only thing for that so far in 40k is Black Watch marines).

    Rift Knight
  • Mike X · 7 months ago
Black Watch? You mean Death Watch.

And I was kidding when I asked who the Inquisition were, since they haven't had a very good mention by GW lately.
  • Rift Knight · 7 months ago
I stand corrected, I must of been thinking of Battletech, been reading some of that lately. Your right about the lack of love for them recently. I would like to see a combined codex for all the Ordos. With the size of the recent codexes that should not be too hard.

    Rift Knight
  • RealGenius · 7 months ago
Please God, let them phase out the Inquisition.
  • Mike X · 7 months ago
The Inquisition are good armies. Great models, good fluff, and just the right amount of originality. They won't be phased out... but I do predict a "Forces of the Imperium" dual army book for them.
  • SinnerBeta · 7 months ago
They said they won't drop anymore armies, nor will merge those two together.

Also, there was something about making those Codies more about GK and SoBs, and less about Inquisition, Storm Troopers, Assassins and Church Freaks... which makes me really sad.
  • Matthew_Rider · 7 months ago
Excuse me? What is the reasoning behind your statement?
  • RealGenius · 7 months ago
Don't get me wrong, I like the Inquisition, but really, if they are going to let it languish for so long and not update the codex, better to just cut it off and let it go completely. Then maybe it can return in the future, better than ever in some new/combined book.

Really, Daemonhunters is barely a book at all, more like a pamphlet, if you take out all the rules that don't do anything anymore.
  • Matthew_Rider · 7 months ago
Actually I love their codexes- they are some of the only ones left that actually have any freedom at all
  • Savark · 7 months ago
Yay. just the inspiration i need to start salies! (after orks, steel legion and blood angels. yes i am making a armageddon reclamation force) now with planet strike. what exactly is it?
  • Krull · 7 months ago
Here's hoping for plastic greatcoat guard..
  • Brusilov · 7 months ago
As a Frenchman, I find this hilarious! The French Games Day has not even happened yet and we're already getting news of what "was presented" there. I had to double check my ticket to make sure I did not miss it.

As for the rumours themselves, it is nice to have GW increase the variety of ways to play 40K. Playing a Apocalypse/Cities of Death/Planetstrike game (or any combination of these books) may be very fun!
  • anoon · 7 months ago
It's probably a picture from an upcoming White Dwarf, since those are written months in advance. Maybe one was on display at the recent FW Open Day?
  • MarcusZ · 7 months ago
Congratulations, you have just volunteered to bring us lots of pictures from the French Games Day! ;)

    (it's on April 19th, isn't it?)
  • Magnus · 7 months ago
    yes it is :)
  • CommanderCorvus · 7 months ago
I know not many people like the Vulcan model... But no one has asked what is the gun under his arm I am guessing it is a flamer of sorts but it is really hard to tell... Anyone got any guesses
  • UltramarineFan · 7 months ago
It's the heavy flamer that's built in to the gauntlet on that hand, it's in the codex.
  • CommanderCorvus · 7 months ago
Oh cool that makes sense... I havent read the codex :)
  • Evil-the-crusade · 7 months ago
I think the pose they have build it in, is not so good.I, would have the spear loking upwards.
Also, since the spear is looking sideways, in front of the torso, gives the sensation of "ultra-dense" miniature, but I think that it is not that dense, i'd say it has the same detail as Sicarius.
That heavy flamer on the left wrist, seems ok, but that armor plate on top seems a bit too big, and to me, gives the sensation of inmobility.
  • Dragosanii12 · 7 months ago
I think the model actually looks quite cool, i'm not sure about the pose but i reckon you could snip off the ribbon bits near the blade and turn the whole hand around so that he is holding the spear behind his back.
  • Parcival · 7 months ago
All this talk about Vulkan - am I the only one to hope that this book is a clue towards the release of a plastic Thunder Hawk? =)
  • BrassScorpion · 7 months ago
GW employees had a product seminar a few weeks ago regarding all the upcoming releases for spring and summer. A Thunderhawk was not included in that presentation. A Planetstrike release for July, however, was included, along with lots of other goodies.
  • Lord Gir of Irk · 7 months ago
    Thank you mister Scorpion.
    Yay JULY!
  • Parcival · 7 months ago
Awww, it would have been too good to be true. Fortunately, we Swiss are very patient people. =)
  • SinSynn · 7 months ago
hopefully you can change the arm angle on the vulkan model so the spear points in a better direction, because the one displayed here is at a completely bad angle. He's even difficult to store with the spear that way. If the weapon could point straight up with the butt end in the ground and the spear tip pointed at the sky it would be much better. The chosen angle for the pic here is just wierd.
And yeah, he does look completely encumbered, as well. I can see him digging through his pockets- "Emperor's loose change! I know I've got a quarter SOMEWHERE!"
  • klemanius · 7 months ago
Guys its not the spear its the legs, they are static yet a spear denotes some form of momentum. If the forward leg was facing the direction the spear's pointing there would be little issue. It may also be that bit of hide sitting between the legs. Either way its still a good model, and if I were using sallies would still get this model. I am even seriously considering using it for a conversion.
  • Lepp · 7 months ago
I know this is going to sound ridiculous, but please understand that i am excited about Planetstrike and think that GW does a great job - for the most part. But that Vulkan He'Stan model...the blade is too small, and it looks like he's preparing to throw it. WTF?! And the Guantlet of the Forge in the docex, as i recall, looked like a smaller power fist with the barrels of the flamer coming out above the knuckles, And what's with the growth on his head? If I buy that model, I'm going to chop the crap out of it.
  • Psyberwolfe · 7 months ago
I know why the model is bothering everyone. He looks like the little brother in "A Christmas Story" when he went out to play in the snow. It basically is too much for a human frame. If he stood at rest his arms would stick out from all the stuff he has on his armor. I'm so tempted to get this model so I can really make the "Christmas Story" look complete.
  • faultie · 7 months ago
I'll have to go to Glen Burnie now!
  • Artur from Chicago · 7 months ago
Why is everyone whining so hard??? As if this model was a mandatory purchase to play 40K? If you can make your own look nicer, please head for the basements and do so. And apply for jobs at GW so that we can all buy your own great models in the future... IMHO people who have no skill with GS or any luck with converting models at all, surely will like it. For moderately decent hobbyists cutting the hand off at wrist and pointing the spear differently will not look like rocket science.
  • nomoreroominhell · 7 months ago
Ah, the old "Don't comment if you can't do better" bull.

People are complaining because the model is not as dynamic or awesome as it could have been. And they're right, as far as I can see from that picture. Maybe it's nicer in person, but from the pic the model just looks static and weighted down.
  • Dude · 7 months ago
I am the only one who finds the model AWESOME and i am proud! this guy is just great!! (for a space marine :P) oooh, and looking forward for the rest of the releases!! :)
  • Lord Gir of Irk · 7 months ago
Heck no! I love it too. I think in the 3D flesh he'll look more dynamic. Frankly I'm glad that whoever designed it realised that Space Marine Captains unlike guard commanders (apparently), don't routinely pose for dramatic portraits whilst in close combat with the foes of humanity.
I think my abandonned attempt at Salamanders maybe resumed somewhere around, ooh i dunno, July maybe!
  • Parcival · 7 months ago
Yes, the model is really nice, but I guess that's also to a big extent because of the spectacular paint job. =)
  • Arch_inquisitor · 7 months ago
If you look closely on the Vulkan model you can see that it joins at the wrist ie spear and hand are separate to begin with, so that is a simple fix.

Its okay and all but I'll stick with mine.
  • Dontbeahater · 7 months ago
I always knew the Salamanders were a bunch of spear chuckers.
  • SinSynn · 7 months ago
Funniest post I've read in a week!
    Two points, sir!
  • CT · 7 months ago
This may be a silly question but, fluffwise, what colour is a salamander (the creature)? Has it ever been mentioned?

I'd always assumed they're white because of the logo.
  • Old_Paladin · 7 months ago
I'm not sure it's ever been mentioned; but the Index Astartes shows a Nocturne Salamader Cloak to be a faded green colour.

Other popular guesses are black (from the soot of their environment); are red (glowing with heat).
  • CT · 7 months ago
Thanks for the response. I'd never seen it mentioned in any of the material I have. It seems like Forgeworld sticks with green for their iconography as well. Forgeworld's looks like a wood elf dragon IMO.
  • Mellon · 7 months ago
There are a lot of different lizards that are called salamanders. Check out the Wikipedia article, it was great.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salamander
  • CT · 7 months ago
Oddly enough the Salamanders had a salamander-like yellow/black scheme during the Badab War according to Lexicanum...
    http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Image:Salamande...
  • Khorneguy · 7 months ago
Urm, guys, have you read the wording on the caption properly. It says he's a games day *exclusive*.

Now i dont' know about anyone else, but i havn't seen a model for this year yet, so have you considered that he might be this year's Games Day model?

If that's the case, i can forgive the middle-ish quality of the model, as most Games Day minis are crap anyway.
  • Joe · 7 months ago
Reread it. The unveiling to the public was (or will be) a Games Day exclusive. This years figure is some Chaos warrior.
  • Psyberwolfe · 7 months ago
This years GW Games Day model was in the last two White Dwarfs. It is a WoC champion.
  • Evil-Termite · 7 months ago
From what I've heard of Planet Strike, there is a good chance I'll buy it unless the price is more than $30. I'm hoping for a release date sooner than later.

I play using the Vulkan character in my army but it isn't Salamanders. Since that Vulkan model has the Salamander head all over it, and it doesn't seem all that incredible, I think I will probably stick with my conversion and spend the cash on something else.

That being said, it is still a pretty good model and if it was available when the codex came out I probably would have purchased it and tried converting a little to make it more personal.
  • dizzy · 7 months ago
The marine is ok, but look!! Valhallans!! :D
  • berzerkermike84 · 7 months ago
planet strike-just another excuse for them to tell us that we need to buy more and more models from 40k and BFG.
thats what planet strike is. thanks for all the resent years of whoring ur self out just to make money and raise the price of ur models ever higher gamesworkshop.
  • hrudboy · 7 months ago
Ok, normally I'm all for levying heavy criticism at GW (gotta keep em on their toes or they stop trying lol), but c'mon. You don't need to buy Planetstrike. No-one even knows what it's going to contain or what other releases are going to be associated with it. So why react like that? Chill. Personally, I've gotten my hopes up for some new Eldar stuff based on that cover art :)
  • Mike X · 7 months ago
Yeah, we have no friggin' clue what's within Planetstrike. And besides, I still don't even own Apocalypse, just to show you that you don't have to buy expansions.
  • Azzy · 7 months ago
Wow. There's cynicism, there's bitterness, and then there's what you have. I'm not sure what to call it, but it's pretty sad whatever it is.

Planetstrike is another expansion, like Cities of Death, that will allow taking the standard 40K game in a slightly different direction by adding additional possibilities. This is great from the standpoint of those that like narrative games and campaigns, as well as those that like to push 40K beyond the little box that the basic rulebook encapsulates.
  • Jipin · 7 months ago
Not too psyked for Planestrike in all homnesty.... will have a good look online or in store before I buy.. .wasn't impressed with CoD but Apoc was good, so will wait and see on that.

Now, for Vulkan..... He gets the thumbs up from me. I couldn't get the flamer right on my version (I tried to make one of out of a power fist and a BaneBlade Flamer so yeah :-P) He seems to be in pre-throw, with the way his legs are angled he's about to set himself to launch his Spear rather than actually already set - someone mentioned the Heroic Poses of the Imperial Officers - not this guy! I do hope to attend Games Day this year, so will have a good old look then, but I will most likely be picking this guy up - even if to shave off those lovely Sallies Icons.
  • Forgefather · 7 months ago
Now that's lame. Do you get this model when you hand in your ticket at Chicago / Birningham / somewhere else, or when you buy the ticket?

Also, getting this model will be a pain in the ass when you can't actually come to the Gamesday. :<
  • Azzy · 7 months ago
I believe this is an "exclusive look" at an upcoming product that will first be unveiled at Games Day (much like Planetstrike), not a "Games Day Exclusive" model.
  • Jipin · 7 months ago
Yeah - most likely this model will be on display - perhaps available for purchase early, but not an Event Only item.

  • Erus · 7 months ago
Sorry.. But the vulkan model looks hideous... The robe/cloak is too chunky and big, crowds the model... The legs/shins seem too short and out of proportion, the spear arm is just awkward, and the gauntlet of the forge they made look way too cumbersome and clunky. Epic fail GW, epic fail...
