We won't change our minds. Thanks for keeping it civil though!

Re: 40K VOTING: IG Command Squad Challenge

I don't see how you can so readily dismiss the red that he's painted as he's clearly painted it with care and attention, look at the meltagun. The 'big blob on the commissars coat' as you say looks to me to be intentional and works as it provides some contrast in shading. Look basically neither of us is willing to back down and say that the other one is better as we both clearly have individual opinions and aren't likely to agree. Basically this is going to lead to nothing whatsoever other than us having decided that the other is wrong in their choice.

Re: 40K VOTING: IG Command Squad Challenge

I find this immensly interesting. As my own IG-army is heavily based around washing. He seems to have filled the wash out with water which is good but still managed to leave a big blob on his commissar's coat. I don't find the red impressive at all, even though I can see some improvement on the banner compared to their uniforms and gear. But as should be considering the size of the banner. I agree that the areas of white are small but the intensity of the white is an excellent contrast to the rest of the uniforms.
I don't think bases or convertions are the most important part, I realise I might have given the impression that I don't care at all about convertions which is not the truth, I just don't want entries to win just because they converted stuff. I think bases and convertions are secondary to painting and agree that quality of painting overrides the quality of bases. Though they boost general impressions.

Re: 40K VOTING: IG Command Squad Challenge

I'm not trying to make excusses for the russians, but I do feel there is a major difference of intent.
Thanks for proving some of my points. I never said Jews, I said races; Slavics, Polish, Gypsies and Jews can all be considered races (and thats why the Nazi's targeted them).
And some people are going to say that different lives do have different value. A child being gased to death for who his.her parents are IS different then a rapest freezing to death while mining for iron.
And I won't fight that Stalin was a monster (he was), but he was a different kind of monster. He was a monster through ignorence. He just didn't care if people died. Hitler, put a huge effort into making sure people died.
That makes the difference between a death camp and a (deadly) labor camp. If you survived the gas, the Nazi's shot you or buried you alive. If you managed to be a good spot like camp nurse, or a southern gulag, or just made it through everything, the Soviets let you go free after time served.

Re: 40K VOTING: IG Command Squad Challenge

So, what you're saying is that some lives (those that were persecuted for racial differences) are worth more than other lives (those that were persecuted because they were a "bane to society")? That's a great respect for human life, I tell ya...

It makes no difference on the time frame. If you kill 40 people in an hour, and I kill 200 people over the course of 10 years, does that make me any less of a mass-murdering SOB?

Also, the Nazi's persecuted way more people than the Jews for more than merely racial reasons. There were Slavs, gypsies, political enemies, homosexuals, and those that just didn't agree with the National Socialist agenda. They didn't discriminate too much on who they murdered.

You're also not giving proper due to the condition of the gulag's. The Soviets purposely put fluoride in the water in order to sedate the population of the prisons, which later caused all sorts of cancer and nervous system epidemics for those that were actually released and even those that stayed in prison. It was just as much of a murder camp as Auschwitz or Dachau. It makes no difference HOW someone was murdered. The fact is that the Soviets murdered them, through direct killings or simple neglect.

Stop trying to make excuses for what the Russians did.

Re: 40K VOTING: IG Command Squad Challenge

Will's done more than simply give it a wash of black, either that or he has the best wash in the world. I pretty much just give my guard a wash of black and the result isn't that good. if you look carefully you can see that its got a gradient from black to that off yellow colour that you don't get from a simple wash of black. Also looking at that red I was very impressed as to how he managed to get that very rich red, again with shading and higlighting. Lokking at Simon's models however I didn't see how they could compare(no offence to Simon). the colours seemed a bit plain and somehow not particularly drawing to me. The white doesn't look like it was done with much difficulty as it's in a few areas with barely any shading and from my experience it's shading white which is the hard part.
If you're view is that the convertions don't really matter(though in my opinion they do as they add to the character of the model which is important in a painting competition) then I don't see how you can rank the bases as also being important. Personally I admit he could have done a better job but keeping it as sand makes sense seeing as they've got an off yellow colour to their fatigues; however the quality of the painting overrides the quality of the base and in my opinion Will's painting is better.

Re: 40K VOTING: IG Command Squad Challenge

Yes they are, check my blog for more info
http://lordsofterra.blogspo...
and thanks to everyone that voted for me!

Re: 40K VOTING: IG Command Squad Challenge

Its also the same mustache as Charlie Chaplin! The gulag's were made of pretty much everybody in jail, and political dicidents were the ones that tended to be killed. The Nazi's targeted racial groups, and to a lesser extent POW's.
Even the philosophy of the camps were different, the Soviet's felt that 10-20 years hard labor cleared the body and mind of everything bad, and the [now hard-working] person could be re-introduced back into society. The Nazi's wanted the 'sub-humans' to be removed from society and the gene-pool.

Re: 40K VOTING: IG Command Squad Challenge

Its similar to the Iron Gobs for the Orks, just a really awesome looking bit so why not use it to death?

Re: 40K VOTING: IG Command Squad Challenge

I find it hypocritical of those that take issue with a Nazi-themed army, but don't bat an eye at Valhallan IG armies that are themed around Soviet Russia. I'm sure we've all heard of the gulag's before, haven't we? Nine-teen million plus people were murdered in the gulags by Stalin, over twice as many people that were murdered by Hitler and his goons. Soviet-themed armies are rampant in this game, yet no one seems to remember this little tidbit of history. It's the result that counts. And I hate to see good painters loose because somebody else had a go at the green stuff. I agree that it's all a matter of perspective.

However I'm quite curious as to how you motivate Will's painting to be better than Simons? (Will, if you read this, don't take it personal, it's a hobby competition so I get picky.) Will's bases are simly sand without any details. Clothes, belts, flak armour...all in the same colour with a black wash over it. No convertions, just some headswaps. I don't get it?
Simon's squad has fine even layers of paint, good use of white (which often is a b*tch), nice details like the squad markings on the shoulder pads, decent bases. The banner also shows he's steady on the hand. There's not a doubt in my mind that Simon's the best entry in a hobby competition...

Re: 40K VOTING: IG Command Squad Challenge

or maybe he just thinks its interesting that they are getting rediculously popular.
