We have played a few games on 4 4'x6' some sort of plastic sheets to give the game a 3 dimesional look. It did not work well. We used bent coathangers to move the pieces around the middle parts of the board but it's a start.

Love the fleet shown. What are the little escorts up front though. I don't remember them.
One of my Favorite ships is the Vengance Class Grand Cruiser and her sisters. I have one which leads my own fleet! If anyone in Central GA plays BFG, let me know!

I´d like to see a Rogue Trader Fleet!
Fantasy Flight Games is going to produce much background material for that through their new Rogue Trader-RPG. ; ]
The official rules for the Rogue Trader model are somehow missing on the GW page.
Nice article fracas

The Warp Rift rules are pretty good for the Rogue Trader fleets, however, i have the originals knocking around somewhere aswell... Sadly the demkise of the Specialist Games website meant that much of the official rules and extras were lost, as only a few of the plethora of rules were re-hosted on the new GW website. GW released some pretty good Rogue Trader fleet models mind...

Hi, all official rules are on the GW site. Except the faq as said and the Rogue Trader rules. But the faq's on the most popular BFG site: www.portmaw.com
yeah i recently picked up a whole bunch of tau stuff from forge world. thats the cheapest fleet, and lucky for me i already play tau in regular 40k. the forge world tau stuff is pretty amazing, not to mention it is not made out of metal. im sort of a beginner to the game, so i really dont know how to form my army, but as far as im concerned the models are what count. and i love the fact that all the rules are free

Nice article.
"The only class of ship missing from the game is submarines."
I do not fully agree. I think daemon vessels are the equivalent to submarines in some way.

The Demonships can "pop up" out of the warp, kinda like 40k deep striking. Not true submarine action of shooting you with you having the chance to fight back effectively, but closer to how subs originally worked.
viron

They can also drop back into the warp, repair and reappear in later turns.

Woohoo I love BFG, probably more than 40k and AI. Now I just need to justify spending heaps of money on these spaceship models that you can't really modify very much. I really love the idea of fleshing out your army even if you don't intend to play BFG by giving your army a fleet. Makes it feel much more complete. I want to get my old Tau ships mixed with the new ones and some turncoat Imperial ships as well!
There's a really good BFG version for Vassal that I've used, and it even contains most of the unit details in the engine, so you don't have to keep doublechecking things.
One of the things I love about this is how you're forced to move a certain amount before you can turn and stuff, so planning ahead is a big deal as inertia can lead you into some very bad positions. The fighter and torpedo rules are really cool too. The rules also have the best campaign rules I've seen in a GW product, with lots of upgrading and so forth.
As with all specialist games I suppose, I'm just afraid that when I finally decide to start collecting them, they might maybe actually get rid of them.
And I want to get AI first too :P Are we gunna have someone have a go at tackling that game also?

Ehm... rule books are not free and downloadable anymore, actually -.- Thanks so much, GW, this is really explicative of how much you care of us...

Wrong.
The rulebooks are free and for download. Check out the games workshop website. Under specialist games - battlefleet gothic - resources.
Actually there are plenty of opportunities to model and customize ships in BFG. A poster above asked about what my chaos escorts are. They are customized Idolator class escorts. And though less obvious due to the size of the pic, the Planet Killer and my Styx heavy cruiser are also customized some.
I'll address this topic more in my next post.
Thanks for reading all.

I thought there was something diferent to your planetkiller, kinda looks like it was built backwards.
I love Gothic too, easily one of GW's best games, too bad it doesnt get more support.
I currently have two fleets, a Space Marine fleet that I have to finish painting someday and a completed Chaos Fleet. So if anyone in the GTA wants to throw down, let me know.

I have to say that the prices are very tempting and in the long run I'll probably get a space marine fleet if not to play with just because they look good and maybe a pre heresy death guard force (I love that colour scheme).

I have a Necron fleet and an Eldar fleet. I really like the way BFG rus as a game. It always feels like strategy is more important.

Yeah, in BFG it actually matters which side you're facing.
(is that a converted planetkiller? it looks like it has less guns than usual.)

I'm interested in picking up a small fleet for my DIY space marine chapter. I saw a few models on the FW site. Is there anywhere else to get these?
Ahh, nevermind, I see they're available on the main site.

GW's online store has the whole range (i think). Huge choice of spacemarine and imperial navy ships to choose from.

As far as conversions...I de-chaosed some of those models and use them as VERY old pre-heresy imperial ships that did not defect. Especially if you want to use them as an Eclisiastic Black Ship.

Surface navy battles of WWII? Not hardly, the ranges are pitifully point blank range and for gods sake you have rules for boarding actions! While yes there were a few boarding actions during WWII if I recall they pretty much all involved seizing control of U-boats that had been forced to stay on surface due to damage. There were also very few actions that allowed gun armed ships to get within striking range of enemy carriers, one in the pacific and the sinking of the HMS Glorious in the atlantic if I recall were about it. If all surface actions started at about 8k meters then yeah, you might have an point, but no.

the models are representations of the ships. they are not set to scale of the table ranges.
yes, they have rules for boarding actions, as well as lances, shields, and aliens. so no, it is not a WW2 fleet action exactly.
stormhammer
Of course I know they have lances etc, but I'm refering to tactical considerations. You can 2 battlecruisers moving towards each other blasting away and quite likely the 2 battlecruisers (assuming they maneuver to avoid torpedo launches etc) can move past each other before one of them takes severe damage. That means very short range tactics, effectively speaking you're at knife fight ranges at all times maneuverwise. I'd put it closer to civil war river gunboat duels than your typical WW2 surface action. This is reinforced by your typical "board edge" restrictions. Space doesn't have board edges.

I have always felt that BFG has soem of the best rules that GW ever developed. The game runs smoothly and I have yet to play a gmae that wasn't action packed.
The Grog
When I played way back on release it rapidly turned into 'Whoever has more fighter bays wins' and 'Eldar wins'. A significant bay advantage let you stand off, run away while picking off escorts, and then just swarm cruisers. Did they fix that?
The Grog
Oh, and assault boats/boarding torps were godly. 3 or 4 hits from either tended to turn a cruiser into a weaponless hulk for several turns.
Dooley
Maybe its because not alot of people played back when I did but it seemed like if you didnt play either Imp Navy or Chaos fleets you werent gonna do very well. I tried doing a space marine fleet but constantly got outclassed by the inexhaustible amount of cruisers Carriers destroyers and the such that the IN and CF can produce! Or maybe I just sucked at it!

a balanced fleet has usually works well for me, and i have not been overwelmed by other carrier based fleets or eldars.
i think most fleets should have 2-4 bays per 500 pts. if the enemy has more than you, play defensive with Combat Air Patrol (now available in BFG v1.5). i also always take ships with 45cm range batteries to handle eldars.
like 40k, you need a nice mix of forces, tanks, anti-tanks, infantry, fast infantry, etc. a maxed out focused force can wins you many games sure, but it will lose plenty as well.
Yes some fleets are stronger than others, like Necrons and Eldars, but they don't automatically win. And some fleets are a bit weaker, like Space Marines, but i have had success with them as well. Interesting enough, this is keeping in with the fluff (higher tech of Necrons and Eldars and that Space Marines aren't usually used for fleet actions)
