An ordinary human killing a hive tyrant in close combat one on one? Not to mention she lets you take wyches as troops. She also has combat drugs and she can choose which one her AND HER UNIT benefit from. all for 90 points. or what about asdrubael vect on his flying landraider that counts as dred in combat with I and ws 7 attacks.
Or what about Beliel that lets you take termies as troops or sammuel that lets you take Ravenwing as troops.
Or even blood angel ones like mephiston being ws and i 6 with a str 5 force weapon that can have a possible 8 attacks on the charge.

Re: BoLS POLL: Rating the Named Characters

"Shrike and his magical fleeting Terminators" is one of the most amusing and unusual strategies I have thought of. Shrike's ability allows all units to replace their combat tactics with the ability to fleet. As far as I know, since terminators have that ability, they can fleet. Granted this makes little sense when coming to the idea unless you believe in personal teleportation devices like the ones in DoW, but it is funny to think about. I like the idea of Assault terminators in Land Raiders and charging them straight into the enemy. When you add up all the distances, you can move a maximum of 27.5 inches if the terminators assault. (12 inches LR movement + 2 inch disembarkation + 1.5 inch base + 6 inch maximum fleet + 6 inch assault move) This is a total asshole maneuver; only reason I think I haven't heard of anyone doing this is how expensive pointwise this formation is. 3 LRC's and 24 termies + Shrike isn't cheap. However it might be fun to try in Apoc.

Re: BoLS POLL: Rating the Named Characters

I have actually played out fights like this on the board. If you start the characters 18 inches away, Calgar should just back off and shoot Abbadon to death. Plus, this forces Abbadon to run towards Calgar to stand any chance, allowing Calgar to always get the charge (not that it matters much). However, once Abbadon get Calgar, there are three things that usually happen.

Abbadon can roll a one for his deamon weapon, get slapped in the face by his over-sized sword and later get taught a lessen by Calgar about how stupid it is to bring an unstable weapon into combat. This happens rarely, but if Abbadon rolls a one and Calgar had already managed to take a wound or two off (mind you, Calgar's guns still need 5's to wound even though he has the re-roll) then Calgar usually takes down Abbadon.

Abbadon could also get to attack, but may not get enough attacks to kill Calgar outright, leaving him with a wound or two. This leads to Calgar surviving, and depending on how many wounds Abbadon has left, Calgar may or may not take him down. If he doesn't, then it all depends on what Abbadon does in the next phase.

And last but not least, Abbadon cuts down Calgar like he is some little girl. Rolling a 5 or a 6 to determine the number of attacks Abbadon gets means that Calgar will probably die outright, unless he is good at rolling invuls. This does happen a lot if Abbadon gets close to Calgar.

However, this is all based on single combat. If you are looking for a balance of a powerful fighter but also one that provides a good boost to your army, then Calgar definitely outshines Abbadon. The ability for all his units to pass or fail leadership tests is amazing, considering that if you lose in close combat but still wish to continue fighting, your units do not take armor saves since the leadership test was passed; the unit was not fearless, even if they hve the basic ability to act like one. Abbadon is purely a single power model, which means the best way to fight him is to not fight him at all. If you can keep your army away from Abbadon, then you have denied your enemy a good chunk of useful points. The ability that Calgar gives to the entire army should be enough to land him a spot on this list.

Re: BoLS POLL: Rating the Named Characters

why you care is a mystery to me. in game terms, he rocks

Re: BoLS POLL: Rating the Named Characters

Can you really do all that in the new Codex? Why? Let me set it up; Shrike, Jump-Chappie, 10 Assault Termies, 10 Sterns(all w combis) in Drop Pod, 2-3 10 strong Tactical w flamers n drop Pods, 10 Jump-Vanguard-or-Assault Marines, and maybe a Scout squad or 2 w Tele-homers. 2 Drop Pods come in (your choice) shoot n assault, all else in deep stirke. ALL of the army has fleet. Termies autolock Let the guard/Chaos/Necrons/Orks deal with that....

Re: BoLS POLL: Rating the Named Characters

I see some folks questioning Eldrad. In three years I have yet to face an Eldar list that doesn't have him. Best character isn't always about HtH. He gets the redeployment and will fortune, guide, and doom units all day long... on three dice.

BTW I don't play Eldar. He may not be top of the pile but he's definitely in the top 7.

Re: BoLS POLL: Rating the Named Characters

Lysander or Ghazghkull, gotta be!

Both affect their whole army's performance and both can thrash most other things in a 1 on 1 fight.......

Lysander probably edges it for being cheaper and harder to kill

Re: BoLS POLL: Rating the Named Characters

What about Commander Farsight? Maybe not the best, but 7 STR10 PK attacks at WS6 on the charge and immune to instant death is nothing to ignore.

But it is the Prophet of the Waggh! ability that makes Ghazzy over the top.
