Bell of Lost Souls: BoLScon 2009 Pod-Racing and More!

  • faultie · 5 months ago
I'm already working on my Imperial pod-racer! Just you wait.

This sounds incredibly fun! While some of us may not be able to get to BoLSCon, at least you were kind enough to give us rules to give it a shot! Thanks!

I think this is a great idea, and I would be tempted to attend, however for 40k at least, I feel that 2 hours to play a 2000 point game will be very very rushed. I can see many games finish at turn 3 and I would prefer to play fewer games, but be more relaxed, and have a decent chance to finish the game.

My pod racer is nearing completion. This is going to fun.......and 2 hours is plenty of time for a game.

The pod racing rule slook really fun although im not sure i'd have enough space to have a good race track

We've been having ablast in testing with 4-6 folks per standard 40k table. Games take 15-20 minutes and are fun and fast-paced.

I'm sure we will have some fancy over-sized tables with all kinds of special rules and terrain at BoLScon!

if you're really short for space and just want it to fit on a standard table you could always take a bit from the old racing game rules that gw put out years ago

at the end of every turn, shift everything on the table backwards the same distance (including terrain), say 6 or 9" (it doesnt have tobe the same distance each turn, just try and keep the 1st place racer at least 12" from the end of the table, if anyone drops off the back of the table they're out of the race. randomly determine placement of new terrain using dice (and scatter dice to determine direction)
after a predetermined number of turns, say 6 or 10 or longer. place the finish line down, and move that along with the rest of the scenery.

Mount one on a couple engine pods... or with its legs grasping on to some...

Yeah, those pod rules are pretty sweet.
I will look at running this at the LA con coming up.
I have good terrain to do one side as a canyon, the other as a cityscape road, and give a "sand people" rule for each one. Gretchin pot shots in the canyon, and juves and spugs tossin' fire bombs in the city. . . have them make an attack at the lead car each time they get to a certain point.

The real question is what to do about modeling up grandstands? That's a hell of a project right there. Maybe start by having some that are empty. . . Does anyone know if there are (cheap, plentiful) molded groups of people sitting down as audience members?

    DKOK in stands here http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/dkkgorginf.htm

    50 for under £50

Um, yeah. Not audience members. Not cheap.

No GW product, by the way, can come close to an affordable target. A very small grandstand will hold about 200 people. If you want to look impressive you will need 500-1000. I sent a note to wargames foundry to see if a generic Roman/Robed torsos and legs or a generic Modern torsos and legs could make it onto their sculpting bench. They actually hold polls for potential pre-orders, which needs 1000 sprues before they'll do it.

One nice sprue could have two rows of people, each maybe 6 persons wide. Fill out with a mix of torsos, arms and heads (or use your own extra arms and heads, like tau or catachan or Pig Iron) and you can get 12 per sprue. So a hobbyist who wanted a grandstand of 240 people would need 20 sprues. Hell, with math like that, I would want 60 sprues! How cheap could they be made available, and how many other avid hobbyists would be willing to "sign up for" seated audiences of either robed or modern (assume robed serves double duty for aliens as well)?

OK, I added an official submission, so it should arrive some time in the wargames factory listing. EZ-link for lazy people provided below:

scotia grendal has the plastic void junkers and veridian marines, they are less than $1 a piece including shipping (make great guardsmen, warzone proxys, and penal legionnaires...even work as storm troopers). They are multi piece so you would have to build them, but by mixing matching you can get a great variety.......still expensive for 500 or 1000 guys....but crap loads cheaper then a bunch of static dkok guys, Really who in their right mind is going to pay $2000, to fill the stands with forgeworld resin.

Best I could find was one pound per figure, plus shipping. Do you know something I don't?

That Pod-Racing sounds absolutely hilarious! I have already suggested it to my local group of players (thanks for sharing the rules!)

very nice set of rules for the pod racing

i love the way the racing is worked from 1st to last, and the special rules are worked last to first, showing the benefits of being behind when it comes to weaponry and boosting etc, compared to the better positions in front (in terms of racing position)
  • RTM · 5 months ago
    Agreed, very clever.

Also means if someone gets "jumped" then they have to make the decision. . . do I fire at that bastard, or do I just line jump them again and hope I don't roll a "1"? Looks like a nicely balanced rules set. Also means double teaming provides real value. If someone is way ahead, they can get shot up and sent back a few notches if all the other pods work together.

Good idea and rules, but -50 wizard points for referencing Episode 1.
