warhammer 40k knoc outs star wars universe.
  • Big Jim · 1 month ago
    Well that came outta nowhere.
  • SonoftheMountain · 1 month ago
really? While I am a big fan of both 40k and Star Wars, I kinda doubt 40k will ever be as popular or successful as Star Wars.
  • Anon · 1 month ago
Well, 40k will certainly last longer, and probably end up being more of a money-spinner if you include Forge World sales, DoW sales etc.
  • Bulwark · 1 month ago
Because Kenner and Lucas Arts < Forgeworld & DoW ???
I would hazzard that Star Wars made more in it's first year than GW has made since it began.
  • Denzark · 1 month ago
I think not baby puppy. George Lucas IP/star wars brand has billions of sales (George lucas net worth is 3billion $.) GW turned over 110 million with 10 mill profit this year. Never happen.
  • Spanky_Harrison · 1 month ago
Totally. I mean, I love 40k, but if you really look at it, star wars is pretty much the most powerful IP in the world.

Bigger than lord of the rings, star trek, and pretty much everything else.

I has more books, more games, and more success. Star Wars is HUGE.

    Disney?

Star Wars is, generally speaking, the happy future. Granted, some nasty stuff goes down. But there aren't whole planets lost to demons and such.

40k is, generally speaking, the unhappy future. Granted, some nice things happen. But there aren't a lot of planets living in harmony and populated only by ewoks. (Dark Eldar would steal em, make em into coats).
  • mazzdakka · 1 month ago
Actually, a civilisation that would wipe out the Ewoks can't be all bad...

Seriously though, the Star Wars universe definitely has it's Dark side (pun intended), sure demon's don't kill everything in sight, but they do have the Death Star and the Yuuzhon Vong (spelling?) which make the nids look warm and cuddly. Sure the Nids will consume your entire planet and digest you, but at least they don't believe in inflicting pain as a form of religious experience.

I would definitely say that the 40K universe is a lot darker though, if only because there are no "good" factions in the 40K universe unless you count the Ultramarines and the Tau. And even those two are debatable.
  • Some Guy · 1 month ago
Sure the Nids don't practice inflicting pain as a religious experience. That's what the Dark Eldar are for. And Space Wolves are plenty "good."
  • otenrider · 1 month ago
the Puppies are "good" in a "bad" way!!!

    does this even make sense?
  • LordSandwich · 1 month ago
Nah, Nids are darker. Sure the YV hurt you as a religious practice, but the DE inflict pain for FUN. And want to know who's darker between DE and Nids? You guessed it, Nids. The Nids have ZERO good reason to do what they do, and yet they keep doing it. (Food you reply? Rest of the galaxy, I counter.) And the thing is, the Nids get better. And better. And better. In a couple hundred years, they'll eat absolutely everything, including the Necrons, and they'll be left in an eternal war with the Daemons, or alternatively they'll just move on, leaving the entire 40K galaxy void of life.

Now look me in the eye and while keeping a straight face, tell me that YV are darker.

See the StarWars universe starts out as a fairly happy if imperfect republic. Then a manufactured emergency causes everyone to suspend sanity to give power over to this guy that is actually the one that manufactured the emergency in the first place (never waste a good emergency). He tries to stamp out any and all resistance/voices against what he feels everyone should be doing and his vision of how things should be. The more freedoms that are removed from the average person in an effort to protect them or the greater good *insert cause here* the more "systems will slip through your fingers." It gets a little convoluted here as allot of laws are broken and stuff blows up. In the end the good guys win and random chaos returns as people are once again able to figure there own way through life instead of being a cog in the imperial machine.

Oh and there is this guy that wears all black that serves as the guy in the field making all this stuff happen for the empire that's kind of scary but very articulate despite having to talk through a machine. In the end he sees the error of his ways and switches sides.

Its a good fantasy. Couldn't ever happen in the real world.
  • Caerolion · 1 month ago
You do realise the story of how the Empire was created was based almost entirely on Augustus Caesar, don't you? Sure, they didn't make a Death Star or two, but the Roman Empire was created in almost exactly the same way.
  • VonKoeder · 1 month ago
Ahh. Well in that case its a good thing history never repeats itself. Except in fashion. I even saw our president not that long ago in robes like you see guys from the Roman senate wear in movies. LOL
