REAL WORLD: Bolters are Real!
I would hazzard that Star Wars made more in it's first year than GW has made since it began.
Bigger than lord of the rings, star trek, and pretty much everything else.
I has more books, more games, and more success. Star Wars is HUGE.
Star Wars is, generally speaking, the happy future. Granted, some nasty stuff goes down. But there aren't whole planets lost to demons and such.
40k is, generally speaking, the unhappy future. Granted, some nice things happen. But there aren't a lot of planets living in harmony and populated only by ewoks. (Dark Eldar would steal em, make em into coats).
Seriously though, the Star Wars universe definitely has it's Dark side (pun intended), sure demon's don't kill everything in sight, but they do have the Death Star and the Yuuzhon Vong (spelling?) which make the nids look warm and cuddly. Sure the Nids will consume your entire planet and digest you, but at least they don't believe in inflicting pain as a form of religious experience.
I would definitely say that the 40K universe is a lot darker though, if only because there are no "good" factions in the 40K universe unless you count the Ultramarines and the Tau. And even those two are debatable.
does this even make sense?
Now look me in the eye and while keeping a straight face, tell me that YV are darker.
Oh and there is this guy that wears all black that serves as the guy in the field making all this stuff happen for the empire that's kind of scary but very articulate despite having to talk through a machine. In the end he sees the error of his ways and switches sides.
Its a good fantasy. Couldn't ever happen in the real world.
