Its the GW corporate strategy game. All you need to simulate a company hemorrhaging money, treat employee and customer both like they were something they stepped in and still have them crawling back for more with a price increase. Game book, board and pieces are all included!!! GW lube sold separately! (It doesn't work but that's the point for the realistic experience)

I think this is a really crap idea. I'm tired of GW making some of their coolest items "limited, you better be here the day it comes out or you aren't getting one" BS. Yes, I wanted the limited 40K in ammo crate release. But I have a job so I wasn't able to be at the GW store and get one of the 3 or so they had. I tried the local independent store, but they could not get any in. I know others who also wanted this and they were not able to get one. Same thing happened with the Harry the Hammer limited fig. Wanted one, even was able to get there the afternoon they came out, but they were gone and no more were coming in. Again...FU GW. How f'ed up of a company do you have to be to take a cool idea and only make about 1/3 of what would actually sell? What kind of idiot says "hey, we could probably sell 3000 of these so let's just make 1000" and then "hey, the original run sold out in one day, let's not make any more. It somehow makes sense to our tiny little almost non-functioning minds to not make any more of a product people want." I also didn't appreciate the local GW store looking at me like I was 'tarded when I asked if they may get any more.
Additionally, some GW stores have the Gamer's Edition for sale on the shelf and Battle Bunkers are also selling the AMMO CRATE separately for $20.
That said, I agree with the gist of what was said and had this conversation earlier today with a friend at the Battle Bunker. It should not require a Herculean effort by customers to obtain new, exciting products.

Thanks...I was actually unaware that was available online. When it came out, I actually called GW Direct to ask about it and they said it was sold out and no more were planned. Since it was a limited item, I never bothered to go and check online. I just went with what they told me over the phone and at the local GW store (Games Workshop - Mall of Georgia).
Also, responding to posts above and below. I have never seen the metal ammo crate for sale at the local GW store or any of the local independents (Atlanta, GA area). If stores around you have them, great, maybe this area just doesn't do well with limited items and restocks. Note that my 'vent/bitching' is based on what is available around me or within reasonable driving distance. When the box came out, I even called stores in Birmingham, AL (about a 3 hour drive).

Yep, the shallow end of the gene pool washes gently at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Some say Deliverance was based on an Alberta Love Story.

faultie

It's strange where you find good game shops. For example, there's not a single (good) game shop in all of D.C. The majority of the ones in the area are rubbish. I have to ride the metro for an hour to get to a decent one. Sure do miss San Diego.
As for Alberta, I've not been there. Sounds like I shan't be going!

Indeed! That's the important issue here.
Don't even get me started on GW's basing kits. Limited edition basing kits? Seriously? You don't expect to sell many of those, some people make their living selling nothing but terrain kits and bits...
And the limited edition armydeal only battlestandardbearers? Sheesh, core units only available in a limited edition fashion. Now there's a great idea. Why not make all the core units unavailable as well. Generate some hobby incentive in people.

Actually, GW has done coupons before. I remember getting my "Mighty Fortress" with one and my "Realm of Chaos" book with another.

Might I interest you in becoming an advisor (before I order these Lords of Change behind me to take that knowledge from you)?"

Molochi

Niche?! Half the players of the game are Xenos!
Frostclaw222
Yes, niche. While half the players may be playing a xenos force, a necron or eldar or tau ruins set would cater to just necrons or eldar or tau, not all xenos. Ergo, niche, Molochi. Understand your exasperation; I'd like nothing more than for my Space Wolves to be taking the fight to the enemy instead of saving Governor So-and-So's fallen hive, but I think we were lucky enough to get modules for all the xenos that got serviced with the Apoc "command vehicle" upgrade stuff. A whole series of boxes of xenos terrain, whether ruins or as part of the Planetstrike Bastion rollout, would be great, but ultimately wouldn't move enough product and would call for suspension of other production in a big way.
MeanAngel

I think (hope, also) it's not Space Hulk. Firstly, Space Hulk doesn't fit that "never done before" premise and secondly, I think that the amount of profit that could be made out of a remake of Space Hulk would be vast, according to the HUGE interest in it from the gamers, and thus it would seem foolish to me to limit it just for one shipment.
I own the original Space Hulk, but I would buy it again, should it come out with new models and stuff ...

FiscalHermitCrab

My money's on the fact that it's Space Hulk, to my knowledge GW has never re-released a game so that fits the bill. It'll probably be an advance release on the 15-16th of August and have like an October full release.
It would be even cooler if it was a primarch that they were releasing in an official capacity, preferably Leman Russ to tie into the Space Wolf release later this year. Once again, something GW has never done.

This is most likely the 'shadow' product they have been rumoured to be working on. The one which the studio is amazed hasn't hit the forums yet.
So, building hype like this is great, but running it as a limited edition? I think they are missing the boat, unless they do what they did with the master of the ravenwing on the jetbike, limited edition, until it turns out it is really popular and it becomes general release.
I don't think they would do a limited edition space hulk, possibly a limited edition with special metal miniatures to roll out a different generic version later on.
If it IS a stand alone game, it would possibly be something to do with the marketing of dropping the bomb. Non race specific and you can use any of your own miniatures in it, much like a necromunda style simplified kill team game. One side trying to stop the button being pushed, whilst the other tries to push the button to drop the bomb.
I am curious, but I can wait to see what they come out with.

So, being that it is described as being "something new, and totally unheard of", but is a board game (allegedly) it cannot be:
Space Hulk - done...twice Hero Quest etc
Maybe it is Monopoly WHFB or WH40K? Cluedo "Heresy Style" - Horus, on the bridge, with a power claw.
I don't see that Harry Potter would fit the GW mould, plus a company like Hasbro would be more likely to be approached to create a board game due to their track record.

I could tell you what they have not done before, but you are not going to like it.
Pre-painted models.
I'm calling it now, Space Hulk will be pre-painted.
PaD

Damn - I was going to say that! :-(
That's why it's a "Limited Edition". Once the pre-paints are gone, they will roll out the regular version that you paint yourself as normal.
Makes sense to me.

Perhaps a Black Library compendium or e-Book database? With some package of books broader than the expected general release? Caters to the fanboys and perhaps drums up crossover players.
Maybe they have several products ready to drop, and are waiting to see which one generates the most buzz. Would show that they're interested in hearing and responding to what the community wants, something they've been loathe to do.

I wonder if it's the BUgman's Bar Game I spied at the ForgeWorld Open day this year?
Someone at the local store pointed out that the "Chaos in the old World" is due out in the time frame of the rumor and as a third party product would be a first in GW corporate stores.

I thought that Space Hulk was tentativly slated for an x-mas release? I would have thought that would rake in a lot more profit, as well as long-term sales, than a 'one off' release mid-year?
Please God-Emperor don't let it be Hulk! I really want the new version, and my luck has always sucked with limited release stuff in the past! No Aquila Bag, Guardsman Bag or Cities of Death resin Strategem markers for me... :-(

It is Spacehulk. 1st, Spacehulk is a stand alone game/set. Spacehulk could potentially be played with more than one race (Marines, Genestelaers, Orks, and Chaos) due to the Spacehulk background.
As for the "It is something that GW has never done before." Games Workshop has never rereleased 1st edition Spacehulk, and it has also never released Spacehulk with Plastic tiles, which is what that is referring to.
According to my sources, it was something that a lot of HQ guys wanted to do and rerelease, but it wasn't really viable to keep it as a mainstream product available for sale for years and years. Hence the limited edition/release.
-It is not Planetary Empires. -It is a board game.
Obviously, Spacehulk still fits these conditions.
-"Very limited GW people know what it is". Well, again, I have friends and contacts that all know what it is. In fact, I was first told of Spacehulk resurfacing over a year ago. I remember being told of the new terminator sculpts back then, which supposedly include a great new librarian, as well.
It's Spacehulk. ONce you get over the "something that GW has never done before." and realize that's just hyperbole/razzle dazzle (*because they have never done it before.... with plastic boards), its pretty obvious, even if you don't know people that have explicitily told you what it is.

I don’t think it’s going to be a board game because GW has licensed Fantasy Flight games to produce board games. My money is either on a Thunder Hawk or following the release of Planet Strike it may be the Indomitable Fortress from the Planet Strike book.

in "getting started with planetstrike" it talks about the "Fortress of Redemption"
"This is no normal scenery either - in Planetstrike the strongholds that the defender has available to him range from gun-bunkers and rockcrete bastions, to the mighty building known as the Fortress of Redemption."
maybe that?

In the german edition of WD containing the Planetstrike stuff was a small ad about the new boardgame "Chaos in the Old World" wherein you play one of the great four Chaospowers intend on corrupting the world or some such thing. This was to be out very soon, the ad had a small picture of what was probably box art (mostly black) BTW GamesWorkshop did quite a lot of boardgames back in the golden age, Chainsaw Warrior, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb to name a few

Its Chaos in the Old World. I have no solid proof, just observations
-August/september they are selling a box set for around £50. (@$70 USD) Estimated Shipping time is around Sept and thats the same price point as Talisman(roughly)
-It is a completely stand alone set that is not related to any race. Its a board game and doesnt tie in with the existing games(not WFB or 40k)
-It is something that GW has never done before. see above
-Some local stores are only getting one shipment; when that sells out it will no longer be available. its not produced by GW, but by Fantasy Flight games. the reason its limited its because its not one of their products, but more like a partnership deal . -You can't advance order it. You have to be there on the day to get it. See prevous point :)
why anyone would want it to be space hulk is beyond me. I mean its going to be limited edition, if they redid space hulk why would anyone want that to be limited-ed ? and besides, the minis exist, the first edition of the game is fine and its more fun building your own 3d board out of plaster ect.
Personally id like a war in heaven 6mm/epic game with necrons/Old Ones/Enslavers, now THAT would be awesome...but awesome is rarely in the GW vocab..

i would gladly bet that retail stores will get multiple and that ordering online will get you one as well, GW often says they have less then what they actually do just to generate more hype for something limited edition. - see how the 40k collectors back and limited edition fancy thing is still available.
now just on the lighter side of things, "something GW has never done before" We can be certain to assure ourselves that it wont be another price rise :)

I'm thinking either those crazy quotal( spelling, sorry) race ( think gaunt's ghosts mid series) with the crazy predator shoulder shotguns, or a board game where you get to pick a side for the horace herasy....
Either one would be cool, but they did just release planet fall, with these limited terrain pieces, so maybe it's a limited, limited expansion, lime instead of drop pods, there ww2 inspired water landing crafts.... beaces of normandy being held by the I.G., as orks start storming up... that would be awsome!

Bugman's Bar Room Brawl has been announced in August White Dwarf!!!
No joke.
My WD hasn't arrived yet (on subscription) but I was in the store today and got my hands on their copy and in the front sections it was confirmed that they WILL be releasing Bugman's Bar Room Brawl.
This is 100% true and anyone with access to August's WD can confirm this.
I've not been able to read the article that surrounded it as, unfortunately, the WD was whisked away out back by the managed after letting a few people flick through for a sneak peek.

Ok, I have a theory about this: There is a shirt that GW staff is going to wear after the 17th that says "Everything you know is a Lie" or something like that. So think about that and add it into the rumours that have been circling like it's a board game etc. that indicates, that the whole joke is that everything that has been told about the whole "mystery box" is a lie, and that means it could be anything. It could be Space Hulk (or something similiar) even though it has been made before but there comes in the "lie" part
also one other thing.. isn't it that in 40k universe it's about year 999? so that would mean Warhammer 41K so who knows if it's something to do with that

hey my local gw store revealed the mystery box......its SPACE HULK ^_^ the models looks so epic, there are 11 terminators, and i dunno how many gene stealers though, sorry bout that, but yeah in Australia its $165 and i say its sooooooooo worth it, hope this settles some peoples nerves. awsome box, the models are not just normal looking terminators of gene stealers as they are in like awsome poses, gene stealers on walls are some of the models, and yeah its just pure epicness
-Remember when they said the last (sorry, second-to-last) price hike was caused by the increased price of plastic due to high oil prices? I am still waiting for the corresponding post-oil-price-drop price reduction.
… DEAR GOD, ITS A GW PRODUCT THAT WENT THROUGH A SOMEWHAT DECENT QA AND EDITING PHASE!

Maybe it's a price cut...
Warmaster 40k (15mm in the wh40k universe)?

Additionally, some GW stores have the Gamer's Edition for sale on the shelf and Battle Bunkers are also selling the AMMO CRATE separately for $20.
That said, I agree with the gist of what was said and had this conversation earlier today with a friend at the Battle Bunker. It should not require a Herculean effort by customers to obtain new, exciting products.
I live in Alberta, the "south of the north", and we too happen to have one of the best game shops in all of North America. Despite a population that can barely read, drives trucks that make truckers wince, and in many places it's ok when your daddy and your uncle are the same man.
Yep, the shallow end of the gene pool washes gently at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Some say Deliverance was based on an Alberta Love Story.
Paddle faster, the banjos are getting louder!
As for Alberta, I've not been there. Sounds like I shan't be going!
They should be around - at least if the mgr is any good he'll try an hook you up.
My intent was to vent my frustration about the fact that some of the coolest items GW makes, they make limited quantities of or cost an arm and a leg to get here in the States (I'm looking at you Forge World).
Just a note, I did not attack anyone here and while you may not agree with me, your tone is rude and shows that you must lack basic social skills. But hey, it's the internet so insult away.
Sorry but I lol'd...
You dont even know what this is, it could be Barney the Purple dinosaur's happy adventures in pedo land for all you know and yet you give it all the big wah-wah.
quit crying at least until you know for certain what the release is lol
want
Don't even get me started on GW's basing kits. Limited edition basing kits? Seriously? You don't expect to sell many of those, some people make their living selling nothing but terrain kits and bits...
And the limited edition armydeal only battlestandardbearers? Sheesh, core units only available in a limited edition fashion. Now there's a great idea. Why not make all the core units unavailable as well. Generate some hobby incentive in people.
If I was allergic to profits, I'd be trying to limit the amount of those in my diet as well.
I bet It's gonna be something largely useless to anybody except 12-year-old fanboys.
Damnit, I want that too! ;)
still got my crappy old blue plastic terminators from the first one :P ha ha
I hope all this talk about not being able to advance order it doesn't mean you wont be able to buy it online,..hmmmm ?
Also I think the August release is Space Hulk.
Can't be Space Hulk, then, can it? :(
Basicly beating around the bushes about space hulk.
If it's "regular" game stores and not just GW stores that can order it, I'm sure I can get my store to tell everyone what it is before it's "announced"
Maybe its a coupon for a discount on 40k items?
Yes, I am THAT old. I was there each year and bought both...sad but true...
Ahriman and Voldemort storm the Black Library. Oh NOES!!!!!1!!1!
I'd love it if it was xenos terrain, but it's too niche. I expect, rather, that there's something more generalized. What that might be, though, I have utterly zero clue.
"So all I do is kill someone, cast a spell, chop off a bit of my soul into an object, and I can return to the physical world within a few years? Might I interest you in becoming an advisor (before I order these Lords of Change behind me to take that knowledge from you)?"
I own the original Space Hulk, but I would buy it again, should it come out with new models and stuff ...
More seriously, I'd be majorly ticked if they do such a "limited" release for the new (rumored) Space Hulk.
But the mystery box could be anything, it could even be a boat!
Vale,
JohnS
(maybe a battlebarge. But "I'm on a barge" doesn't work as well.
Now, who are you gonna' take...?
Aaaaaand....T-Pain.
Here I am wondering with just a wee bit of hesitation...
It would be even cooler if it was a primarch that they were releasing in an official capacity, preferably Leman Russ to tie into the Space Wolf release later this year. Once again, something GW has never done.
Hell I'd even be cool with it if step 1 was to cut a hole in the box.
Plenty of time to generate interest. Order quantities are probably fixed based on sales for each retailer.
In that case the "never done before" could be "a Game" that is limited release to all but corporate stores.
IIRC all games have been available by mail order so a "store only" could be the first.
Risk 40k!
This news really blows for anyone living in Florida. We don't have a single GW bunker in the state. Enjoy your goodies Texas.
i just hope it's somthing functional or atleast cool. 2 other friends of mine are gonna pitch together for this for a mutual friends birthday, and if it's crap, we will all feel like crap
Its a power mushroom!
Space Hulk - done...twice
Hero Quest etc
Maybe it is Monopoly WHFB or WH40K?
Cluedo "Heresy Style" - Horus, on the bridge, with a power claw.
I don't see that Harry Potter would fit the GW mould, plus a company like Hasbro would be more likely to be approached to create a board game due to their track record.
Who is to say it is 40K related anyway? I don't think it says that anywhere does it?
or, y'know, underpants or something...
The 'never been done' part is plastic corridors or some other new feature (wasn't there a rumor it would have some electronics in the game?).
No, just kidding, clearly its space hulk.
Pre-painted models.
I'm calling it now, Space Hulk will be pre-painted.
