Well the frog is black with red (its a very striking black and red too) and the Blood Angels AoD minidex has got a lot to do with black and red... at least this is my supposition. Happy holiday over there anyway.

My frist minis where some space marines from the mid 90s. While I no longer have them (sadly). It was a Blood Angels army I first aquired. They were a lot of fun. Ah, memories.

Alas, it is another day at work for us Aussies!
  • Wraithwing · 1 year ago
You're working on a Slann mage Priest perchance?

And thanks for the work comment. I shall paint Dark Angels while at work to cheer myself up :P
  • Suneokun of Pathfinder · 1 year ago
Ahh ... Rogue Trader Space Marines boxset, you were obviously swimming in the same learner pool as me...

My RT era Space Marines are now filling out the ranks of the DeathWatch Kill Team, the RT Imperial Army (yes Imperial Army - wonderful) are now manning my mortars and volunteered as my conscript legion! The RT Era Orks are about to be resurrected as Da Boyz and then we'll be casting voodoo over the Advanced Space Crusade Tyranids and performing some nasty little conversions too...

GW models don't die, they just get recycled as grunts.

PS: Now is only we could work out how to reuse the squats - life would be good.

PPS: Well there's always Codex: Deamonhunters - they'll fit in there somewhere!

If you're ashamed of your first space marine then I'm ashamed of everything I've ever painted :P
  • MarcusZ · 1 year ago
Well, I can't let bigred alone out there!
My first minis are a little bit younger - they are from the 2nd Edition Boxed Set.
Here is a picture of the first 2 and a half Space Marines that I have painted long ago:
    http://img67.imageshack.us/my.php?image=marines...

But to be honest there are have been 2 other models that I messed up before them:
    http://img523.imageshack.us/my.php?image=greens...
The brownish-white one wasn't even painted using citadel paint, but with some Revell paint I had lying around.

I'm still far away from a golden demon class painter, but I've become quite a lot better since those days. :)

best regards from Austria on a boring monday workday,
    marcus

Nice first models I salute you!
  • jasperflint · 1 year ago
my first minis were some 3nd edition black templars that turned into blood angels and then into dark angels before returning to black templars, by this time there were so many layers of paint on them that they looked more like man shaped bits of blue tack than anything resembling a space marine.

i reckon you're working on a plane with a top and bottom different colours! lol
  • MarcusZ · 1 year ago
    forgot to guess:

I think you are working on a nice, glossy paintscheme for Nids!
  • Argentius · 1 year ago
Hmmm, the frog. Colour scheme for a scratch built generate slann army for 40K for necrons to eat?

As for chaplian aspirants I'd forgotten about those :) I'll need to make a few in my new Silver Skulls army to keep it retro.

Enjoy your holiday, mind you I find a day off work called Labor Day when none of you are labouring :)
  • Cyber_Wulf · 1 year ago
A poison dart frog? by which u mean "a pdf" so a new pdf will be winging its way to us very shortly? someone mentioned angels of death so my guess would be that. hahaha.
  • Forhekset · 1 year ago
Wow never would of thought of that!
  • Da Orks! · 1 year ago
Man, all my old models, were stolen along with all three Space Hulk box sets. Sad times... for the record though, my very first mini was a Chaos Knight from Heroquest, who was painted all black, poorly.
  • Corvusgeek · 1 year ago
I love those Mk. 6 Corvus helmets from the RT Marines kit, they have such a classic lean and mean look to them. Every one I can get my hands on goes straight to my DIY marine army.

I wish GW would release a few "different extra heads" sprues, with all the different old helmet styles and some bare head variants.
  • CT · 1 year ago
    Amen to that!
  • Gonka Koff · 1 year ago
That frog has the colour scheme of "Legion of the Damned"!

You think your first minis where bad.
My first minis wher ok (Lord of the rings Haradrim)
my first 40k on the other hand, Eldar guardians.
Worst models I have ever painted along with my Eldar Jetbikes and Vyper.
IF I go back to Eldar I will have to replace those models, have to.
  • Algoroth · 1 year ago
Some of those old GW sculpts are pretty wacky...I not while they're evil nasty Dark Elves they're still smiley and happy Elves...
  • Shabbadoo · 1 year ago
You would of course be doing up some Skinks in that frog color scheme. Either that or you would be doing some Blood Angels. One or the other.

    ;)
  • daboarder · 1 year ago
my money is on a bllod angel army of death as you guys have said an mini-dex is in the works
  • Brother Noh · 1 year ago
    My vote would be 'Nids.
Poisonous frogs and 'Nids go very well together.
I've at least 2 examples in my samples box.
  • GeorgeLupus · 1 year ago
I REALLY REALLY wish that I had kept some of my old Imperial Army minis. I've heard 'but I can't paint good like you do' more times than I can count (and compared to most, I'd say that my minis are still only mediocre), but anyways, they were the old pre-Imperial Guard 2nd. ed. minis, the generic guys. All I had was a Testors military paint set, no primer, and my end result looked like little more than a bunch of green army guys.
  • pcrotteau · 1 year ago
I painted a (new) veteran in my DA army as an aspirant with the black arm, pad and helmet.
I thought I was the only one that remembered that piece of lore.

It was reprinted in the Compendium I believe.
  • Bigred · 1 year ago
According to that White Dwarf article, a white helmet and right arm can also be used to indicate aspirants to the Apothacarium.

Just some cool tidbits to customize your army.
  • TPR Trewevas · 1 year ago
I lost all of my original minis from the '80s, but I still have the memories. I used to get a real attitude about painting and I refused to take it seriously. Being kind of a jerk, I spray-painted all my minis silver, and put swastikas on the shoulder pad and called them the Knights of the Reich. The swastika thing was a super pain-in-the-ass (which is funny, considering I was not supposed to be taking it seriously), but I had an idea and a plan and I toughed my way through the whole thing. I think that they were supposed to be some off-shoot of the Grey Knights. Anyway, that's pretty much it... although, I guess that this is my 20th year in the hobby... yay me!
  • Shaefer · 1 year ago
Cool models, found a load of my old guard stormtroopers and necromunda orlocks the other day when cleaning, have to admit the quality of gw models has definately improved alot over the years. my old plastic storm troopers look terrible compared to the current stormtrooper/kasrkin ones.

regarding the frog..well i remember some of the fluff from warhammer ages ago..the old ones crashed their ship in the old world and the slann are the last living slaves/troops/crew/whatever.

If a new minidex is coming..maybe a list for the old ones? or at least slann in space (retro game called battle toads anyone? :D )

Love that Rogue Trader stuff. I have two boxes worth of those original Space Marines scattered around my around my collection. I also have the original Fantasy Regiments miniatures; that set was $22.95 for 60 miniatures, 10 each of 6 different armies, and I got it with a coupon (yes, GW had coupons back then) for half price!

BEAT THE PRICE INCREASE ON NEW SPACE MARINE CODEX AND METAL MINIATURES:
Speaking of prices, note that the prices of some items on GW Advance Order 40K are higher than they were just recently, specifically the new Space Marine Codex and metal miniatures. Prices there now reflect the prices after the coming price increase. A Space Marine Spearhead is now a better deal because it's priced with pre-increase pricing. See price details at:

  • Archon Kirendia · 1 year ago
I keep my first painted model on my desk at work, a plastic high elf archer from an older editionof Warhammer. One one where you got the cardboard picture of a wyvern and rock lobba.
And then I keep two of my most recent models next to it, so I can remind myself that I am getting better after 15 years ;)
  • Malevon · 1 year ago
These have got to be my first models... old, old Chaos Warriors from a starter paint set. The hand was at some point inked purple by someone else.

    I don't know, man.
that image captured me as soon as i saw it.
    its striking.
what i notice is that it is a deep black and a striking red, but it is right in the middle of this interesting, but relatively indescript flower.
that is sort of a metaphor for what it is that we do as mini painters. the 28mm scale, which you could say is the medium in which we produce our art, is a mathematical fact. it is simply what it is. however, there are some fantastically talented painters who are able to put life into the model. the 28mm scale and the model as a lifeless representation of reality are both the flower. Our impossible goal of giving the illusion of life to this lifeless realm, of making the unreal seem real, is the frog.
  • Mad Hatter · 1 year ago
Are you painting a Tyranid Army? This frog is a fine example for a paint pattern! All those minis are painted better than mine! :(
  • Admiral Drax · 1 year ago
Ahhh...RTB-1. I loved those minis, and had a sprawling 2nd Edition Space Wolves offshoot army: the 'Shadow Wolves'. Shocking. And shockingly badly painted.

Always loved the beaky helmets, and it's good to hear about the dismally bad missile launchers. Imperial robots were fairly shoddy minis, too...!

As for old prices? I distinctly remember going 'halves' with my brother on a box of six Epic warlord titans (with a choice of weapons) for £15. Crumbs - and we thought that was a bit pricey!

    - Drax.
  • TheInnerGeek · 1 year ago
Yes! I too spilled the big money for the Adeptus Titanicus box set. It was thirty US dollars when I bought it. My friends and I had a lot of fun stomping around with 3 vs 3 Warlord Titans!
  • quietviper · 1 year ago
I've got it your starting a new space marines army. The imperial Poison Dart Tree Frogs! Brilliant...wish I had thought of it first.
  • Augie · 1 year ago
He's going to make a Slann army of red and black frogs?
  • Augie · 1 year ago
Oh, started with RTB01 myself too. :)

I miss those days when a "corporate" was some kind of weird dish served to geeks in suits.
  • TheInnerGeek · 1 year ago
Hm. I wish I still had some of my old stuff. I believe my first GW mini was a space marine terminator of some sort. I think it was even the original Grey Knights minis. Two in a blister for $7.50, those were the days.
  • wienas · 1 year ago
Ahhh memories. My first model was a Genestealer for Space Hulk. I painted the thing bright red with gloss Testors paint. The next Genestealer I did had arms from the plastic Goliaths from Necromunda. He was a Hybrid with a shotgun (and looked like crap).
  • Dvastator · 1 year ago
My first minis were epic scale imperial beastmen attack platoons. I still have one of those RT marines along with the Origional Land Raider.
  • Slawson · 1 year ago
My first GW minis were halberdiers in blue and red for an Empire army that I never played and gave away. After that I painted a catachan back when they first came out in metal in the early 1990s.
  • Swordlord · 1 year ago
I love the old school GW/Citadel minis! I sold my original (circa 1989) RT era Space Marine army, but I kept a few select ones for my collection.

As for the poison dart frog, I always preferred the frog with blue & black mottling. ;)
  • LEGION3000 · 1 year ago
Ah...Alas all my Rogue Trader era marines met their demise at the battle of One Thousand Fireworks.
  • Muskie · 1 year ago
I have those "fantasy fighter" Dark Elves. They were partially painted by a friend but I've since stripped them. I painted up some of the original greenskinz a few years back and even GW'ers were surprised how good I got them to look for ancient static plastic models.

Here is a link for those visually inclined to pictures of my first miniatures and some old ones from my collection:

Me thinks the froggy is representing a desire to create a new Flesh Tearers force...with all the shiny new models. Either that or its some kind of strange freudian reference to amphibian lovin.
  • BittenByDesign · 1 year ago
looking through my old RT era stuff, a huge swathe of it is no longer supported, or not in the game. Hello squats, thudd guns and other crazy weapon options. (yes I have a space marine with a shuriken catapult as they used to be able to get them as a special weapon) but I may have to dig out my old conversion beamer miniature as it is now back in the game... ;-)

I have so many RTB01 beakies that most of my opponents in tournaments ask me either what they are representing, or how I found so many of them. It is telling how old you are when you have miniatures older than the people you are playing against...

"back in the old days, we used to have to walk three miles in the driving rain to get a look at a model, not like you young things getting on the internet thingy"
