I know what you mean about people regarding elves as underpowered- I have yet to fight someone who plays them in Wotr- very good article
On a side note will there be an Uruk Hai by the numbers?

A Uruk-Hai by the numbers will be forthcoming. We plan on doing all the armies in this way. Thanks for reading!

"Thought by many to be an unnecessary addition to the movies "
Why? Just curious, because I didn't care about her one way or the other.
Back to the article;
It's a good article, I probably wouldn't be able to tell the units apart without it (something that I found a common problem with LOTR).
Rules-wise, it's odd that elves have a unit (High Elf Cohort) that is Defense 7. I thought that was the domain of dwarves and similar.

Well some people feel that Arwen is just kind of shoved in as the love sub-plot that all Hollywood movies HAVE to have. If you look at her roll in the movies, ( the theatrical release more then anything, compared to say the extended edition) she doesn't really do anything and has very little impact on the movie. Almost all of the parts with her where added for the movie and are not in the book. The only time she really has an effect on the story is when she rescues Frodo and fight the Ringwraiths, something which in the books is done by Glorfindel, some people are annoyed they cut him out. Of course they gave this roll to Arwen so they could have her do ANYTHING in the movies, and also so hey would not have to introduce a new person who would do nothing after that, something Tolkien did a lot.
As for High Elf Cohorts, just about every army has a defense 7 unit, Dwarfs are 8 or better.

I personally thought she improved the movies with her expanded role, showing why Aragorn is in love with her and that they are, rather than it just being a fact. Tolkien is great, but some of his characterisations do come off flat.
Anyhoo - I'm starting up LoTR with Galadhrim, and looking to WoTR, so this article has been most helpful, thankyou :)

Personally I don't mind her in the movies, I'm really rather ambivalent either way about her.
Glad to be of help to you and good luck with the army!
I'd rather have articles about specific tactics and army builds than just a long list. A lot of the information is just reiterating stats and abilities which people can just look up themselves.
Plus, I feel that these articles are too long for a blog. About half the length I think would be better.

I disagree - I like the opinions shared here. They provide excellent points to reflect upon, for those of us who only can get a game in occasionally, and don't get to see these units in action very often. Getting reports of effectiveness is great - whether you're playing the elves or fighting them.

Me too. In time it may be good to have specific tactics, etc. But although I've bought this game, I've only played a couple of demo games (with GW staff who didn't know a lot of the rules), so it's really helpful to have an overview of the army.
I'll still read about it myself, but now I'll have an impression to compare my reading to. As I go through, I can think - this is the unit the review said was bad, but they look good to me - or not, as the case may be.
Thanks iamaddj for the round-up.

Our initial goal is get a first set of "by the numbers" articles out for the entire army range of WotR, and we are working our way through them.
That will give everyone a baseline, that writers can build off of to explore individual tactics and units in more detail.
Its a slow but steady route to our goal.

Well Bigred beat me to the punch on that one! Thanks for reading and for the kind comments everyone!

dude, I loved your comments on Arwen. Good summary of all the units and heroes though. I agree with you on all points!

As someone who just started Elves in WotR, this article was timed nicely. Nice write up for someone new to the game.
It seems like the only solid melee elf units are rare/legendary and metal... damn.
Since Galadhrim Regiments are much cheaper, I'm going to try them for awhile and see if I can get them to work.
This article nudged me in favor on bows on the cavalry instead of shields too... makes sense.
Overall a nice article. I look foward to more in depth ones in the future, but this is exactly what I needed for now.

As to the problem with the metal models for High Elf Cohorts and Rivendell Guard I would look at using the new Galadhrim models with Spears and Shields. Seeing as how the only elf unit to come with hand weapon (which spears count as) and shields are High Elf Cohorts and Rivendell Guard, and that it is in fact impossible to take Galadhrim with only hand weapons and shields it seems like they intended this. It also makes sense if you are trying to do a Galadhrim themed army.
For army make up I would take good flighty units as your rare and fill your common with archers.
We will of course have more in depth articles int he future, thanks for the kind comments.
