Bell of Lost Souls: NEWS: Forgeworld Model Masterclass Released

Unfortunately, even with the right training and stuff, the GW decals are mediocre at best.

I picked this up at GD UK in September and it really is a fantastic reference book. Loads of step by step painting guides with great photo's demonstrating the techniques. The book concentrates on tank and armour painting but you could easily adapt the methods demonstrated for regular miniature painting to give a more 'realistic' effect.

After reading this you'll really want to go to town when building and painting your next tank!

Is there anything about conversions and the like?

I picked my copy up at GD UK too, and it really is a great book. It does cover conversions, but that depends what you mean. Battle damage, extra plating, crew detail, weathering, all are covered in the various step by step guides. "converting" as in barrel swaps, reposing etc.. not really, its not the focus of the book. It aims to show how to acheive a more realistic effect on your armour.

Highlite for me - mixing a gloss paste to represent rust and grease on hydraulics!

It does demonstrate subtle hyper-detailing like adding hydraulic pipes, extra rivets/bolts and examples of battle damage but doesn't really go into weapon swaps.

Since buying it I've added to my collection of painting equipment - I'd studiously avoided using oil paints on my models but this book shows how they can be used extremely effectively.

I've also been considering purchasing an airbrush as there are so many effects I'd like to try out...

The Siege of Vraks diorama in the last sample photo is most impressive.

Those of you in the US who put off Forgeworld purchases because of the price (or who might need that last little push to justify a purchase) might want to look at the current US$ -> BP exchange rates. The lending crisis has hammered the Euro and th British pound more than the dollar.
I put my order in Friday, but it looks like things might favor a US$ purcahser even more in the next few days.

looks good, sadly like all forge world books I have to budget when I can afford it!

Hopefully there's an entire chapter titled "When Your Forgeworld Model Doesn't Fit". Forgeworld makes the coolest stuff. Forgeworld also makes the worst-fitting stuff ever.

I can attest to this. I just recently got the DH Chimera Doors(Granted from a TP and not direct) but they were new/sealed. I was ready to use them when I discovered the rear door is literally 2mm narrower than the GW door. :( Nothing I can do as I didn't buy direct, I guess I may cut it to use the iconography instead.

Mmmmm, tank porn. This is my first Forge World purchase. The improved exchange rate played a big factor into that decision.

Ehh...could pick up 4 modeling books that explain such techniques or better at my local store for the cost of this one book. Of course, assuming I needed the hyper-detailing on model that won't be used for display....
