Bell of Lost Souls: NEWS: Forgeworld New Releases

  • Catzilla · 1 year ago
Actually GW uses resin in some pieces of the terrain (barricades if I remember correctly) and especially in the basing kit they sell (excellent product btw). Resin gives better details than plastic and rivals metal models too, but heating/drying that stuff is quite hard without getting bubbles into it. Warped resin can be bent using hot water so thats not a problem, but air bubbles destroy details so you got a lot of waste products for one good sellable one.

During a break from painting I was looking at my email on a laptop while sitting in our Battle Bunker today when the Forge World newsletter came through with these new products shown in it. I have to admit, since I first saw a picture of the Type II Cobra a few months back, I've been seriously considering it in spite of the cost. I'm in the middle of painting an Eldar army at the moment, making it very tempting. It is oh so cool looking!

Note that Imperial Armour Volume 6: The Siege of Vraks Part 2 is also about to be released as well as the models mentioned above. At UK Games Day they are giving away free rolled, not folded, posters with each copy of the new book.

Gun envy anyone? Since when did the D-Cannon become super massive? Since it started tossing space/time rips? Get it? Supermassive/time rips....Bu dum bum! Thanks! I'll be here all week!
  • TheInnerGeek · 1 year ago
I see I'm not the only one who bought Quantum Physics for Dummies... just kidding. I think it's funny.
  • Augie · 1 year ago
Ah hah! So you admit to delving into the Forbidden Lore of the Mechanicus?! No lasgun for you, conscript!
  • Herald of Nurgle · 1 year ago
    Hmm. I'd buy the Cobra
  • Tim Taylor · 1 year ago
I can confirm that the siege of vraks happened before the anphelion project. The first lands of Varks were in 812.M41 and the first telepathic call was in 995.M41
  • Denzark · 1 year ago
The forgeworld letter confirmed it is the earlier Sgt Culln before he became a 'famed company commander'.

At least it gets us away from specualting about frogs...
  • nurglespuss · 1 year ago
hmmmmm.... A bit dissapointed with those vanguard, the GW ones to come look more detailed/dynamic...
  • PrimaryIterator · 1 year ago
The new legs in the veteran-assault squad look pretty good.
  • StaysCrunchyInMilk · 1 year ago
Red Scorpions are in Vraks II and Vraks III, which has Daemons (Causing Inquisition to turn up in response) - More unique Characters, and "allegedly" a flame-bombing flyer. Sweet....
  • number 6 · 1 year ago
That Cobra is gorgeous, I would almost get one just to model it, certainly my tiny tiny Eldar force doesn't justify such a purchase.
  • Culial · 1 year ago
Cobra - is sweet, but not a lot of good to my Red Scorps army...maybe in the future if Eldar catch my attention...

Dread - Nothing special, but I'll still get it, if nothing else the standard will make a nice Chapter Banner, as I'm useless at freehand :)

Veterans - 5 Mk IV helmets, 5 MKIV Torsos, ONE MKIV legs...Hmmm...ok then...
Nice for what they are, but basically that's just the other torsos with purity seals and Jump Pack straps added...also take into account that you get half the ammount of heads/torsos/pads as the other veterans and I wonder why 1 set of legs and 2 jump packs costs £17...not very pleased with that, but I'll still get at least one lot for a Jump Pack Captain conversion I have planned
  • TheInnerGeek · 1 year ago
I'm not a Red Scorpions collector (though I do have Culln for a conversion) so even though their new stuff looks nice, I'm not too tempted by it. That Cobra on the other hand would look really nice skimming along with my Altansar Eldar though...
  • Forhekset · 1 year ago
Boo Red Scorpions. Oh well they still look cool, love those helmets.

Did someone say Vraks III? Are you kidding? Are we ever going to leave this crappy planet?
  • WalksInTheDarkness · 1 year ago
Love the new Cobra. I prefer it to the old version. The fact that it looks like the vehicle has been built around the massive gun, rather than dumping the gun on top of a falcon or wave serpent makes it look so much better.

Not impressed by the fact that it's £25 more expensive though!
  • Ranillon · 1 year ago
Great stuff. I just wish you didn't need to mortgage your home to afford it. If FW cut their prices in half (or turned those pound signs into dollar signs) I'd buy things from them all the time. But, I balk at the idea of paying $200-$1000 for a single model no matter how nice, despite the fact I would spend that much and more if they had cheaper models.
  • smurfhater · 1 year ago
Same here, but it it just ain't going to happen. because forgeworld uses resin they speed up the drying time on there models. As a result many are not good enough too be sold. the best example of this is thunderhawk gunships only 1 in 10 made are good enough too besold to the public. so when you buy one you are not only paying for the one you recieve but the other 9 that weren't good enough.
  • Culial · 1 year ago
Wow, you learn something new every day!

That's a bit distressing though, considering the quality of some of the lower-priced kits I've personally recieved.

I wonder how they define 'good enough for Joe Public' a little conversion work goes a long way...probs why the Forge Worlders have such huge armies :P
  • Forhekset · 1 year ago
They work for GW why don't they just use their gear? That may be a stupid question, I don't know shit about this industries manufactorums.
  • Anonymous · 1 year ago
They use resin, GW use metal and plastic. Resin is much better for low-run minis and specialised stuff that might be popular, but won't sell nearly well enough to justify the full citadel treatment. Metal's expensive, and plastic is even more so when you aren't making a warehouse-full of it.
  • Ranillon · 1 year ago
I don't know -- this explanation sounds a bit too convenient to be taken at face value. I have no doubt that dud models are produced that can't be sold, but on the other hand this sounds like a sales slogan (and excuse to justify high prices) -- "We throw away most of our production to guarantee you get the very best!" <cue sales jingle>

Just what is the margin on a typical model? If it's low (10%>) then the current prices seem reasonable (though one would have to wonder about the effeciency of their manufacturing process). However, if it is high (<%25) then they would be shooting themselves in the foot not to lower prices and increase production to fill all those additional sales -- unless, bizarrely, they thought there was a (low) fixed limit to how many models can be sold regardless of price.

I also wonder how much the price is influenced by a simple disinterest in greater production or even just snob appeal. FW can run its business however they like, naturally, but one has to wonder if they aren't missing a real opportunity. For example, I've lusted after their models for years, but I've bought maybe $100 worth in all that time as I just can't jusfiy their huge prices for mere models. Yet, at half the price I probably would have spent thousands on their stuff by now.

I'm feeling nosy and opinionated so I'm going to lash out...

SURELY if they could be bothered (financially as well as physically) they could discover a solution that works well for them, directly decreasing costs and increasing sales. I mean, they don't even have sales to try and clean up old stock (if they even have stock). Who wouldn't turn into a rabid salivating chaos beast at the mere hint of an annual sale on the more expensive ranges? Warhound titans, 1/3rd off for 2 weeks or while stocks last! Who wouldn't go out of their way to buy that knowing that we'll never know when/if they'll do that again? Anyone who says they don't want a titan is a liar.

That's just one sales idea, I'm sure theres a myriad of other avenues to explore, regarding behind the scenes work such as manufacturing. I've only spent 2 minutes thinking about it...

You may class this as a bitch but really I'm so passionate because I think Forge Worlds work is utterly brilliant, and quite simply, I wouldn't be nearly as interested in the model side of the hobby without the (very distant, mind you) future prospect of one day owning some of these items. The very fact that they exist in such over the top extravagance is amazing, I mean, Reaver titans? Come on, what the hell would I do with one of those? Besides lovingly build it, paint it, and just stare at it for every day thereafter.

But for now I simply have to content myself with window shopping for my Phantine XX Thunderbolt Wing (Just finished Double Eagle :D) in 40k scale, my Chaos renegade army, my Narmenian 1st armoured regiment, or my Tau Ksi'm'yen Recon Contingent with human auxilliary based on the Elysian range.

In summary, I think all I really want to say is, I love Forge World and I wish I could buy all their stuff :P

Well, to clarify the production and waste process here: The resin warps when it cools, depending on how much time it is allowed to cool in (and if it's at a regulated temperature). The moulds are rubber and need replaceing every time a part breaks off - which is quite frequent, (on the larger detailed titan parts it will sometimes break after 2-3 moulds) wheras the costs for a mould in plastic and metal are offset against the thousands and thousands produced (Just as well, they cost 50,000 each, and the baneblade had seven spues total - that's 350,000 for just one copy of moulds, let alone if you made another copy for the american manufacturing plant). The costs aren't just for the material - That resin isn't cheap - It's not just for the staff to make the models and the moulds, it's not just for the design team's wages - a risky investment if you look at it from the beginning - but also the management and company costs and overheads - I'd guess about 30-40% of the total costs. - They have to make a operating profit, replace equipment, and all this time tread water, especially with the current looming recession - Hobbies are the first thing to go off peoples spending. I, personally think it's a shame Forgeworld are so expensive, as i want more of them. I don't think that they are unreasonably priced, just too highly priced for my budget (bar very special occasions.) the only gripe I have is the returns service for faulty products (I expect to have to do hard work when I get my bits, but i've had some unworkable howlers that in the end i just had to throw and convert from scratch) and that they cn't be ordered from the store, to collect from the store. Couldn't they do a monthly or Bi monthly delivery - you place your order on that knowledge of delivery delay, with decent notice for a fee that's not 12% of cost. Ireckon they don't as they can't garuntee the delivery, and the complaints of faulty bits to staff would be a nightmare, along with the upset that it may cause with less experienced modellers
  • smurfhater · 1 year ago
i heard this from an ex GW manager who explained too me why forgeworld prices were so high.

also the thunderhawk is the most extreme waste but i know sqiggoths are are around 1 in 5, but even so when you produce models on an industrial scale thats alot of waste time and materials.

btu yeah i wish they would slow down and do things efficently and halve the prices. i wouldn't even mind waiting for longer too reicieve the product if it was not as high price.
  • Culial · 1 year ago
Still, I have to wonder if it wouldn't be more efficient NOT to rush the drying time and end up with more usable models...
  • Zaarin7 · 1 year ago
Nice models but other than some IG Leman Russ turrets I don't have any FW stuff on account of the cost.
  • Veahirin · 1 year ago
I will get one for sure, Ill throw in an Avatar too just cause the FW avatar is way better than GW...
  • CarbonBased · 1 year ago
Not bad, still not enough to make me stop saving for the FW chaplain dread.
  • Veahirin · 1 year ago
Yea, that chappie dread is sick. I was thinking of picking one up too.
  • Sarpedon · 1 year ago
I don't even play eldar, and I would buy that to paint it. And yeah, that looks way better than the first ed. Cobra, which looks like if a gretchin stood on the end of the gun barrel it would break off bcuz it's so unbalanced.

    now i just need 250$ plus shipping. : /

And is it just me, or do eldar helmets painted white look like KKK masks? maybe i'm just crazy.

Also, i'm glad i learned about the resin process, i admit that i don't know too much(and still don't), but this does do a little bit better job of explaining than i've heard(my friend purports that they must cool the resin in the blood of virgins to put the magic in FW resin).
  • BrassScorpion · 1 year ago
To give Forge World credit where credit is due, they have very few bubbles and imperfections in their models, which is certainly essential given the cost of most FW kits! The detail and quality are both quite high and in spite of the cost, I am very pleased with the FW models that I am lucky enough to own. I own a few FW Dreadnoughts, one Titan and some Chaos Marine and Terminator upgrades and they are all outstanding. Even on badges and scenery pieces, the quality is excellent. The resin on my Arkurian Pattern Baneblade variants is near flawless; you can check them out, fully painted and with FW Mechanicus badges added for decoration at http://www.40konline.com/community/index.php?to...
  • IamapersonandImCoolAintI · 1 year ago
    wow!
    That cobra model is amazing!
I'm getting one for christmas so check out my site soon!
  • Andy · 1 year ago
Do you Eldar players ask FW and GW to keep making your vehicles as goofy and ugly as possible? Seriously, I've never seen an aesthetically pleasing Eldar vehicle.

Wtf is that thing? A dildo?
  • LEGION3000 · 1 year ago
I think you are the first person I have ever heard of that DOESN'T find eldar vehicles excellent looking.
  • erfunk · 1 year ago
I think Eldar vehicles vary from alright to good, but none of them really engage me. Wave Serpents are probably my favorite of the lot due to the smaller gun proportions. Though I suppose my only actual Eldar gripe is the infantry and their helmets.
  • Rift Knight · 1 year ago
They have to have some place to put all that hair. ;)
  • Forhekset · 1 year ago
The most iconic part of them?
  • Veahirin · 1 year ago
I think you might be the only person I have known to not like Eldar vehicles. I guess you hate the revenant too? whatever.
