Truly this is the end times.
  • KillMeForPrizes · 1 year ago
Still cheaper to buy online from the US, even with shipping.
  • NallTWD · 1 year ago
Holy crap! The Canadians are actually going to have less to complain about for once... Here comes the "but but direct services still sucks!" comments...
  • Crazy Legs™ · 1 year ago
Well considering the US direct sales website will ship to Canada (and last time I tried it, even went as far to include GST in the order), I wouldn't be at all surprised if the next step is to combine direct services. Even if only at an online ordering level.

Can't be that difficult to have the online store use the Canadian retail price and direct the order to a Canadian distribution center.
  • Volrath · 1 year ago
Clearly, US prices were changed to reflect changes in Canada =P

Gotta make up the difference somewhere right?
  • Aze · 1 year ago
    Well thats great for them.
The price increase is all around the world due to rising prices. Canada is just getting lucky because as they have combined with GW USA they now use the US dollar and not the Canadian dollar when comparing to the British pound, as the US dollar is stronger the prices go down. Therefore the price increase is nothing to do with their prices going down, so don't complain about it.

I can just see lots of people who live on the border applying for a one day pass to go over and buy miniatures cheaper, lol.
  • Matt Varnish · 1 year ago
Well, first of all you guys have to realize Canadian prices were way higher than US prices when the dollar was the same. We were getting the shaft.

I think now it is simply the GW Nerf bat coming to nerf our high prices back down to yours. Never thought Id see it though, too bad I have pretty much everything I need except for supplies.
  • Vancouverite · 1 year ago
Wooo hooo! I've always tried to support my FLGS(s), but when prices are 50% more I admit I've often resorted to the "run for the border". What with gas prices being what they are, it'll definitely be shopping locally 100% of the time now.
  • Savark · 1 year ago
WHAT BOUT OZ??? the prices are SO high here it is $50 4 a box of marines and were currently at the same price as the US
  • Parcival · 1 year ago
I noticed the high prices in OZ as well. When shopping on Ebay from Switzerland, I never purchase Australian GW miniatures because a) they're so pricey and b) it's about the most expensive shipping one can have as well.
  • Stad · 1 year ago
Aw some went down, some went up. Baneblade now 110 from 95 and spraypaint up to 17 a can!

I can live without can, but I was hoping for 3 more baneblades
  • abhinavjain · 1 year ago
correct me if i'm wrong but isnt the baneblade a plastic kit.... and i blv ur talkin abt the 95 in terms of US dollars... all plastic kits are unchanged in terms of pricing
  • abhinavjain · 1 year ago
    nevermind... wrong line of thought..
  • Taffeh · 1 year ago
Baneblades in the UK are £60 at present -> not sure what they are like after the price hike but I thought they were plastic? - if you do a currency converter £60 = $110, so I guess it brings it in line with UK prices (aka the home of GW)
  • Crazy Legs™ · 1 year ago
I noticed that and went "What? Why did the baneblade go up $15?" Surely I did something to deserve this punishment. But not a bad day to decide to pick up a Russ Squadron :D
  • Augie · 1 year ago
I do not see much on that list that wasn't already "cheaper" (relatively speaking). I mean, I don't see Vampire Counts Blood Knights at all for example. So this price drop is just **** in the wind. I guess it will help out Canadians a bit, which is cool, as I think those guys have been getting the shaft for way too long.

Even still though, with price hike today, I think it's the end times for me building anything remotely serious outside of the plastics. And with the rumors flagging around about plastics going up next year, who knows. I guess it is time to start looking seriously at recasting.

    Our home and sacred land!
  • Kresh · 1 year ago
Reminds me of how the pharmaceutical market works. The US pays the big prices and the rest of the world gets the cheap prices. *shrug* Eh, not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Capitalism: somebody somewhere is paying lower prices than you, and somebody somewhere is paying higher prices than you. You just feel screwed because it's your wallet.
  • TheInnerGeek · 1 year ago
Ah, a welcome break for our friends in the great white north! Now that we've sent you cheaper GW products, can you send us some cold wind? I'm in Texas and it's still freaking hot here.
  • Brother_Marius · 1 year ago
Looks like they didn't drop all that much, 30 CAD for a codex... 28.50 USD... they could probably buy from ebay way cheaper anyways. Still, can't be bad thing for folks that don't like ebay and have the spare moola
  • Chuckles · 1 year ago
This probably has more to do with the Canadian Dollar reaching parity with the US Dollar and the merging of operations than much else. The Canadian Dollar has been stronger than the US Dollar for a while now (almost a year?), and lots of organizations have had to rework their Canadian price structures, magazines being one example. Exchange rates are more than just an intellectual exercise.
  • faultie · 1 year ago
It's actually been a touch less than the dollar since about June, but it has fluctuated over and under for the last year. Regardless, the loonie has traditionally (last few decades) been less than the dollar (as low as ~$.65 from '98-'02), and the prices have been based on that. A touch of justice for the Canadians. Hoo-ray.
  • sista akt · 1 year ago
Damn! This is awesome. I actually have a reason to go to a GW again!
  • Maxis Lithium · 1 year ago
I had heared that this idea had been batted about at GW Canada for a while. I'm very gad to see it happening. I suspect we'll still get hit with a price hike on the metals when it happens, as all the models we see price drops on in this list are all plastics. Not even a hell hound in there! No hybrid kits and no metals. Still, $25 for a box of 10 boyz plus a Nob? I'm detecting large quantities of WIN in this vicinity.
  • MarcusZ · 1 year ago
    Good thing for the Canadians!

Now if only GW Germany would adjust its pricing to the UK level as well.
The difference here is not the end of the world and not uniform over the whole range, but a Battleforce Box for example is 80€ here in Austria (GW Germany is responsible here so we have their prices here as well) compared to 90$ or 50GBP which both turns out to be around ~63€ at currents rates. That is 26% more!
Not everything is that expensive, the new SM codex for example is "only" 10% more than UK prices, but overall we do pay quite a lot for that tiny little bit of water between UK and continental Europe :p
  • Brother_Marius · 1 year ago
Ouch... is there a reason why it'd cost that much more? I'd figure with the unified currency it would be more in line with the pound than the dollar.
You would be a better served ordering it on the net from a discounter or from an ebay merchant (wow I do keep harping on that). I've saved ridiculous amounts of money that way. Paypal all the way, though. Protects you far better than some of the other bidpay setups
  • PhilBrad · 1 year ago
GW product have always been :

    a) A niche/luxury product
    b) Pricey (see a)
    c) Have a customer following that will keep buying regardless of cost (for the most part.)

GW like all companies have seen a rise in their overall costs recently and have to up their price to counter this. Anyone paying for fuel/food etc.. will be well aware of the current market. GW's is doing what it has to to keep money coming in. They've turned a corner financially judging by the last set of accounts and recent shareholder meeting report, they are just following everyone else and having to raise prices to cover production, marketing and distribution.

It's not GW being 'greedy' just reacting to the market. My big surprise is they've kept a lid on plastics pricing. I think we'll easily see 10-20% going on these in the next 12 months.

My advice, if you want to save buy from an non-GW source, it is VERY rare I buy anything direct form GW these days and haven't done for the past 3+ years.

Glad to see this now. It's hard to rationalize spending, in some cases, 50% more on a model, when you know you can order it from our friends to the south. The Canadian dollar has been very strong over most of 2007, and lead to first a parity, then a gain over the US dollar.

I'd like to support the local store more, but it's hard when we were getting charged 50% more on the box price with a very near even dollar.

I know at the beginning of the year, a bunch of us watched the dollar very closely, and we peaked at approx $1.10 US. That prompted a few of us to make a couple different orders from GW US and TheWarstore. I myself saved almost $100 on an order that included 2 DE Raiders, and 1 box of wyches, and Asdrubel Vect through GW US. With TheWarstore orders we saved even more than that with bigger orders, my girlfriend started a brand new ork army.

In a hobby where armies cost hundreds of dollars, if we can save that much that gives us more options to play. This was as much a bussiness decision for GW Canada, even the die-hard bussiness was being lost to cheaper pricing in the US.
  • Son of Dorn · 1 year ago
Wow, as a Canadian customer I really feel like this is the first time we've ever even been noticed as a group. I mean up until yesterday that hadn't even added the SM stuff to the "Advanced Orders" section of the GWCA website. Always we're just that other North American country, but this? Awesome!
Add that to the 30% discount that a certain Canadian online retailer offers, and we're actually doin' great.
    Christmas in September!
  • Brother_Marius · 1 year ago
You should look on ebay if you can stomach the risks. I've been able to pickup brand new things from the folks who get unboxed orders from GW direct (best guess is they setup a merchant account, get a ton of stuff and either close shop in a few months or something). I've had good luck and for around 600 bucks US i've probably bought around 1200 retail. Best advice if you do go ebay is get paypal for the protection it offers. Every single dispute I've had has ended with me getting my merchandise or getting my money back.
Oh and find the merchants with the free shipping... that saves even more off the tip end.
  • Son of Dorn · 1 year ago
Yeah, I've been down the ebay road with excellent results. Another good place is Great Canadian Miniatures from British Columbia, they sell most of the stuff at 30% off, although I don't know how this price change will affect them.
Not sure about the posting links policy here, but copy and paste to Google and they're top of the list.

4 years later: No 50% discount on plastics?
  • Millenium_King · 1 year ago
So if I read the letter right, the new US facilities which were paid for by US consumers are going to be used to reduce prices in Canada... so in effect, US consumers are subsidizing Canadian customers. Typical.
  • Azzy · 1 year ago
So, in effect, what you're saying is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yi4CRZQEcGg ?

    *rolls eyes*

Personally, I'm happy for our Canadian neighbors -- it's really is about time that their pricing got addressed.
  • Battlemind · 1 year ago
Wow M_K, you have no idea how economies and private businesses work do you? That's the stupidest thing I've read on this forum.
  • Millenium_King · 1 year ago
Someone earlier brought up the excellent point that this is exactly how the pharmacuetical companies work.

I think you are the one who may not understand how businesses work. If American consumers will pay more then make them pay it. If Canadian consumers cannot afford as much, then operate with a lower profit margin in Canada and use the high profits from the US to offset it. Lots of corporations work this way: Division A operates at a loss, Division B operates with high profits - but the corporation needs both Divisions in order to be competetive. In essence, Division B is subsidizing Division A.

Please help yourself to an economics textbook when you get the chance.

CA's been getting the short straw for a while now anyway in terms of prices but you're reasoning is...strange.
  • Son of Dorn · 1 year ago
Apparently (by your reasoning) only Americans are employed by this setup, so essentially GWUSA gets the jobs and syphons money out of our country. Typical.
  • Brother_Marius · 1 year ago
If you read it right, it's both combined. It sounds more like they're bringing mail order warehousing more local so canadians don't have to pay for the shipping from the US and then local shipping. Haven't been able to find out if they've actually built a manufacturing facility yet but I'd wager there's something coming. Same thing happened for the US when they built the manufacturing plant here.
  • Son of Dorn · 1 year ago
Oh dude, I got that. See, that was sarcasm, I was just poking fun at the original poster, Mr. Millenium_King. But you do make a very good point.
  • Bruce Lee · 1 year ago
Memphis has manufacturing, and that is where all of Canada gets product from. The Canadian warehouse closed about 2 years ago. They used to ship from UK to Canada, and then out. Now if you order from GW Canada, it just comes right from Memphis.
