Bell of Lost Souls: NEWS: UK GW Website, Exclusive Model

  • Sergeant_Uriel_Ventris · 1 year ago
I think people are way too hard on the new website. Sure, I miss the old hobby articles as much, if not more, than the next guy, but I really think this is more of a "hating what's new" kind of reaction than anything else. The new website is much easier to navigate, the pictures are fantastic, and the ability to click on anything and get a larger version or image is wonderful.

Unfortunately, the wife would never let me spend $100 on minis right now, so I'll just have to sit and drool about the Sergeant mini. If any non-Marine player gets one and would like to trade it for something else, drop me a line!
  • abhinavjain · 1 year ago
the new website is great but as you said, the loss of a lot of great hobby articles is shameful... why were they not added to the new site? i particularly miss the SM command squad conversion article.... and yeah the site is painfully slow... takes forever to load... wonder why?

and another thing is that the events section is no longer updated on a regular basis... the GW US store events for september werent even put up on the website until the second week of september!!!
  • MarcusZ · 1 year ago
I did not have any loading problems with the new US site at all, worked fine from deep within europe so far. To be honest the old UK site was always the slow one for me. Of course the new one is a bit slow at the moment, but I think that will go away once they have tweaked their servers and the interest for the new and shiny site decreases again.

I think the new site is far supperior to the old one. It is so much cleaner and better structured than the old pages. Of course it is sad to loose so much content but I really hope, that they will bring back all that stuff sooner or later.

I hope they will switch the german pages to the new system soon. While we do have the same shop as the "old" UK pages, our content sites are just such a bunch of old looking, outdated and inconsistent "things"...
  • Anon · 1 year ago
OZ site is still old format. UK was my refuge for hobby articles when the US site got redone. Hopefully it'll take them awhile to get to that one.
  • TheInnerGeek · 1 year ago
I've got that Limited Mini and it's really nice. It's not too hard to spend $100 with GW, so it's an easy mini to get... I got mine on accident!

The loss of content will be sad, but I've found a lot of old content on the new US site. None of the Black Gobbo stuff though, and I liked that better than anything!
  • Brother_Marius · 1 year ago
Yeah the UK site has so much that the US one didnt... and it appears not all of the articles made it over. Hopefully the fix it soon or add new goodies
  • Damien 1427 · 1 year ago
Horribly slow, ugly layout, and it even timed out on me.

To be fair, I had stopped "using" it anyway. The death of the bitz range neutered the online store, which is what this really is, so I can't see me using the site any time in the future. Even if I were, the clunky, unintuitive layout would put me off.
  • Lord · 1 year ago
do you know if the Black Gobbo will be coming back? overall I do not like the new site, as it does not have the great hobby content. when I got started in the hobby, I used to sit for hours at a time reading all there was on the site, so I now know a lot about the armies. Now that all the info is gone, I guess I will have to rely on great sites like this! (wait, is that a good thing or a bad thing?)
  • JohnOSpencer · 1 year ago
Black Gobbo will not be coming back. It had ended up just being a collection of links to articles that were on the website. Sort of a 'here's what's new". You can find that in the articles section of the website(bottom right hand corner of the main page).
  • Volrath · 1 year ago
WORST decision. site is slow, ugly and you cant find anything useful hobby wise unless you knew it existed beforehand!!! It's soooo corporate it hurts......

It is painfully slow isn't it?

I found a pic of an ork flash gitz from the new site on google image search...but it's not anywhere on the new GW site...although the model has been photographed in the same style as the new 'how-to-build-orks' images.

I wonder who comissioned this website redesign?
    It's not human friendly.
    It's not google bot friendly.
    Who is it intended for?

And why hasn't google penalised GW for using black hat SEO by redirecting all clicks to their portal page (which is probably loaded with cloaked keywords)!?
  • baronvoncarson · 1 year ago
I agree. The old sites were much more user friendly and easier to get around. They had neat articles and some pretty awesome content. These new sites have almost zero content, run like arse and are hard as hell to navigate.

All it is now is a massive online store with promotional stuff to push different products cloaked as content. It's a sad day.

As an aside, which Chapter is that marine painted as? Aurora, Sons of Medusa or something else?
  • shadowblade · 1 year ago
Personally I think that the new model is awesome and encourages people to use the online store rather than ebay, as for the new gw site is sooo difficult to navigate and I miss all the conversion articles.
  • Veahirin · 1 year ago
Honestly I don't think this one mini is going to get people off of EBAY. The only time people will buy on the GW website is when EBAY is just as much, or more expensive (yes, it happens, lmao)

  • boreas · 1 year ago
It will! Exactly because you can resell that mini for 40+$ on eBay right now. So spend 100$, get the mini, resell it on eBay... There you go!

A lot of the hobby articles can still be found on the Internet Archive of the GW site:

Finally - the 3-Beer-Marine arrived in UK. The new GW-Websites are awful slow and you can't find anything... better to drink the 3 beers that were ordered by the marine :-).
  • Kresh · 1 year ago
Somehow I missed that mini. Gorgeous!

I miss the "exploded" feature of the old sites that allowed you to see what sprues and bits came with a particular kit or mini blister. Hope it's not a dead horse issue.
  • CT · 1 year ago
I don't understand why they don't post the bits/sprues with the item either. All the new ones are photographed and printed in White Dwarf. How hard is it to upload the photo and post a link? It's pure laziness in my opinion.

The navigation is pretty good once you get used to it. I still can't figure out how they determine which category an article belongs in. It takes me three guesses to find the space marine chapter gallery everytime.
  • Augie · 1 year ago
The hobby articles will likely not be coming back or at least, not in the mass quantity that used to be there as I understand the thinking.

That is what White Dwarf is for.

    Lucky us.
  • The_Tempest · 1 year ago
I like the general style of the site, I feel theve taken a step into the 21st century in that case, but the speed and layout are really questionable. They seem to be really trying to push the store, considering its intergrated right into the site, but they really do nothing to organize the site in terms of armies.

Also, what about all the links posted in white dwarf? The only link I ever see is ca.games-workshop.com, and this does me absouloutely nothing to help find the article/coverage.

The mini that they are giving away is from the white dwarf subscription in the uk, so its nothing new (i.e. Ebay time).

or you could just buy it for $10
  • gwmaniac · 1 year ago
what's up with this slow thing? it's fine when i go on the site.
  • beakie · 1 year ago
I sure would like to check out this GW website you speak of, but either it's been broken for over a week, or the dam thing won't even load on my browser any more. Lots of white space on that broken page.
  • Daddy · 1 year ago
+++ Noooooooooo! I go to the UK site so that I could actually search for something and find it before the end of the decade! The US site is good looking but slower than hell! I do however agree that with the lack of usefull articles and Black Goggo style stuff the number of times I'll go to the site is limited to seldom if ever. Canada has some cool articles mmmm have to head back there...
  • TheLuc · 1 year ago
the site is a no go sluggish and unfriendly, of course like most of you the contenent that disapeared is dispointing but it's to sell WD.

more it goes more GW is going Corporate , less gaming and it's all but buy buy buy.. so thats the reason bits are gone and also the conversions showing how build stuff was kind of saying don't buy from us but build it yourself. the bad thing in all of this is that most stock holders are not players..it is one of the major reason we are ignored by the company.

they will keep producing books and minis and i suspect that it will be on a bi-monthly regular basis to keep us buying which i'm pleased of but in the end will it benefit the game.. so far new releases didn't change much, it's mostly FW ideas or old ones.

for the Exclusive mini.. well i could build one out of plastic marine parts so not that exclusive for me, plus it's a Marine again..heck i'd would have put somthing so really players would have gone crazy like a new Necron Warrior, Dark Eldar Sybarite, a Long Coat IG Sergeant, a plastic Meganob, Plastic Sister or even a GK
stuff that players really ask for...

thats been known for eva, well known about

I'm sorry but that figure looks silly. What is he doing with the power fist, waving bye-bye to the enemies of the Emperor?
  • Cpt Vineum · 1 year ago
    That's not a website. It's a E-commerce.
Using the opportunities that the new web 2.0 offers to just have a new e-commerce is an example of how to waste time, resources and good moeny. This is an old fashioned way of doing business.

Wonder how many access does Bols weekly more than Gw's site.
Just imagine how nice would it be games-workshop.com with Bols as homepage :/
  • UltramarineFan · 1 year ago
NOOOOOO! WHY?! This is this is the worst thing they could possibly do to the website.
1.There aren't nearly as many decent hobby articles.
2.All it is now is a fancy online store.
3.As an online store it's not that good a format.
4.It's slower than it used to be.

I declare this piece of news the worst I have heard all day and the new website CRAP!
  • shane · 1 year ago
I had already tried the U.S. site and found it slow, cluncky and awkward so after reading this thread I immedeately went to the U.K. site that I had always found astoundingly easy and enjoyable to use and guess what? Slow clucky and damn awkward to use. Don't get me wrong, I'm overjoyed that I now have the opportunity to get that specific model(£50 on ebay!!! it aint that nice) but after 3 attempts to make a purchase over £50 and all I ended up with each time was an empty basket I've decided enough's enough. G.W. BRING BACK THE OLD SITE.... pretty please
  • shane · 1 year ago
plus it's hard to moan to G.W. about it all (hence the good moan here) hurah for B.O.L.s
  • Mike X · 1 year ago
Yeah, not only is the US version slow loading but gives FireFox users "script not responding" errors for each page.
  • UltramarineFan · 1 year ago
Mine's slow but it eventualy gets there, the thing is it just isn't a hobby website anymore it's a minis online store with a few articles here and there, the old version was much better.
Think about it newbies seeing that as the website, hardly impresive.
  • UltramarineFan · 1 year ago
GRAHH! I go onto the site seconds after I posted the previous thing and it says that 'maintenance work is being performed'. Whoever came up with this version of the website should be sent down to burn in the fires of hell for the rest of eternity to pay for the monstosity they have created!
  • TheLuc · 1 year ago
yep thats GW alright messing up thats their motto, since the squat they mess up.. after new codex out it's the web site ...funny that they try to get rid of the ebay curse, they just make it worse hahaha

BolS is the new place to be for your gaming needs
  • Zantesuken · 1 year ago
