Bell of Lost Souls: REVIEW: Imperial Armour Masterclass Vol:1

  • Ruggerman08 · 1 year ago
I just got my signed copy yesterday. I have already read most of the way through it. The techniques are very useful and should help get some of the rust and wear techniques down.

The book is very high quality and the gloss pictures are very helpfull. For the most part I give it a thumbs up worth the cost of admission.
  • Sergeant_Uriel_Ventris · 1 year ago
Well, maybe if it didn't cost an arm and a leg they would sell more... but I suppose that with high quality comes high cost.
  • Bobx66 · 1 year ago
    Tank porn? yes please.

Why did you get your copy already? I want mine, and I preordered it!
  • DS86 · 1 year ago
That diorama sounds awesome, cant wait to see it!

But Uriel its always been that way matey, IA and the likes, as they are large glossy books of new smell goodness, they arnt going to sell many so the price increases :(

Could always wait till someone scans it into the comp and puts it on a torrent site ;) haha you'd get the tank goodness but not the smell :(

    1) Do they also explain what to do when one wants sand on their tanks? I want my Blood Angels' tanks to suffer the harshness of the desert.

    2) Is the part on tools and equipment useful for international customers, like in Switzerland we don't get that Klear stuff? In other words, are the descriptions detailed enough that I can go and hunt for a similar product in our stores if I can't get the exact brand of something?
  • RedScorpionsGirl · 1 year ago
They don't go over using sand (maybe something that will appear in future books?), however the part on adding the Trojan from the D-Battery 45th Artillery company article may prove useful if taken in stride. They make an earth mixture to simulate the tank sinking into the ground, ( while you aren't trying to simulate the tank sinking in the sand, the idea may help) and using how they did that, you could apply sand in a similar manner, just not as heavily as the area that the Trojan is sunken into the ground for the diorama. Just a suggestion though.
  • Parcival · 1 year ago
Thank you for the tip, I'll look into it. =)
  • RedScorpionsGirl · 1 year ago
1). They don't directly speak of using sand for anything (maybe in a future volume?). However, the article on the D- Battery 45th Company Diorama article may prove a bit useful for you. When they get to adding the Trojan, they use an earth mixture they paint on both the tank and the base to simulate the tank sinking into the mud and having driven through it. While I know you are trying to simulate sand, this idea may prove useful for you if taken in stride, and you use a sand/pva mixture (not making mud consistency, but more PVA to make it more liquid) and use that tank as an example. Just a suggestion though.
2). I believe they explained it clearly enough that no matter where you are you can get something that will work the same way. They show you a large two page spread of the items they used, and the picture is clear enough you can read the descriptions on the respective bottles. While this may sound a bit tedious, you can figure out what they are, and what you can substitute for that if you don't have access to that particular brand. Be wary though, just because it has the same name doesnt always mean it will work the same exact way. As bigred always says caveat empor.

Aren't water filters filled with charcoal particles?

Maybe they are big/flat enough to look like rivets.
  • RedScorpionsGirl · 1 year ago
The pictures/explanation show a 2qt. water filtration pitcher and the filter from it respectively. They don't state the brand they use, and they show it being a mix of black and tan particles, then go into how to use them for rivets.
  • UltramarineFan · 1 year ago
ah, thanks it kinda makes sense now.
  • UltramarineFan · 1 year ago
Check out the second-armoured spearhead- SM sample army on the GW website.
Now! Count the number of Heavy Support! I mean it! This could be VERY important!
  • phill · 1 year ago
    Any alien vehicles?
  • W.Irving · 1 year ago
There are some Tau flyers (a manta and a tigershark) in the book. Other than that, I think not...
  • Ahriman · 1 year ago
Ultra-Fan What are you babbling about? the Terminators have a dedicated transport.... SO WHAT?
  • UltramarineFan · 1 year ago
THERE'S FOUR F-ING HEAVY SUPPORT CHOICES!!!!!
LAND RAIDERS HAVE ALWAYS COUNTED TOWARDS THE HEAVY SUPPORT EVEN IF THEY'RE A DEDICATED TRANSPORT!
    or have I missed something.
  • Sigvaldi · 1 year ago
You missed something. Termies can buy Land Raiders as a transport option without using a heavy slot. Only one unit of each type of termie can do it, but it can be done.
  • UltramarineFan · 1 year ago
WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME?!
    *sigh*
Can I just ask how you found out?
  • Sixsystems · 1 year ago
We've been trying to keep this from you for a good, long time. Unfortunately, the cat is out of the bag now.... *sigh*
  • UltramarineFan · 1 year ago
Hey, you're on -4 for your rating now. Clearly people do not like you. Can't think why...

    Space Marine Codex page 136:
"one terminator squad in the army may select a land raider of any type as a dedicated transport. (see Heavy Support fot points costs)."

    also

"one terminator assualt squad in the army may select a land raider of any type as a dedicated transport. (see Heavy Support fot points costs)."

Just to clear up where it comes from.
The last codex was vague on this issue. It also did not specify whether Crusaders can be taken, which is weird because they are built even more so for carrying units.
I like that they state that we can select a land raider of "any type".
  • UtramarineFan · 1 year ago
How did I read over that! oh well, at least it's sorted now.
For the crusader I never really saw the point in having transport 16 seeing as youcan't take 2 squads.

I make it a rule to be entirely honest with people on these forums. Invariably, that causes some contention and aggression- in others as well as myself. Sooooooo... I'll get rated poorly everynow and again. It doens't really bother me that some folks don't care for me (read: "Truth", Assy, et al). I rather enjoy that they have rating systems to do what these haters can't do in discussion... win.
  • Sixsystems · 1 year ago
I guess I should note that I never rate anyone. Ever. If someone writes a kick ass post, I'll let them know. If they generally suck, I'll let them know that too...
  • Hatchett · 1 year ago
People don't like Frankenstein's monster, either; or, for that matter, Britain, but that doesn't stop tourism, does it?
And by the end of Shelley's book, you just love the big lug.
  • Sixsystems · 1 year ago
Love? Hmmmm..... Not too sure about "love", Hatchett. People I love can come over and hangout with me and the lady, pet my cat, get a beer out of my fridge without asking and dislike my brother right along with me.

That big lug will not be welcome to my beer, (neither will most Brits barring Ultra and Nurglespuss) etc. I'd guess that we are just arguing semantics, but I thought I should make myself clear... ;)
  • Sixsystems · 1 year ago
    Hey! Hey!

I'm up to being rated a zero. I guess some folks might be warming to me! Have no fear, Ultra, I'm sure to find someone to piss off in a week or so. I shall return to the land of negative ratings soon enough!!!!
  • Ahriman · 1 year ago
Ha ha yeah - it took the Laughing Man to expose it all!
  • Jake Nelson · 1 year ago
Er, no, upon double-checking old books to see if there used to be some weird rule to that effect and you were just out of date, that's -never- been true. The only way Land Raiders were different was that they counted as normal vehicles instead of dedicated transports for the purposes of Victory Points and capturing objectives. (And in 5th, of course, that no longer matters.)

If they did count towards Heavy Support, there would never be a reason to take them as a dedicated transport (or to have that option in the books), since a HS LR wouldn't have the limitations on which squads it could transport that a DT one would...

Dedicated transports always count as part of the same FOC 'slot' formation as the unit they're taken for. A Rhino taken for a Tac. Squad is a Troops unit, a Land Raider taken for a Term. Squad is an Elites unit, etc.
  • UltramarineFan · 1 year ago
I'm confused but happy, glad I know now, I'll be able to tell my chaos playing friend, he'll be delighted. I never relised because I thought because it never said it didn't count towards heavy support I assumed it did count. oh well.
  • Ahriman · 1 year ago
Yeah! You can have a landraider as a dedicated transport - as can CSM's

Does it cover how to properly prep the resin and get a nice smooth surface? Most of the forgeworld I've put together lately has been pot marked and very roughly surfaced (i'm doing eldar, so it doesn't quite fit right with the rest of the models) I ended up doing a lot of sanding / filling and recutting panel lines (poorly i might add) but I'd love to know how the studio does it.
  • Ruggerman08 · 1 year ago
It does cover it briefly not in detail. It appears they do alot of smoothing with green stuff as well as files and sand paper. They did stress that sanding blocks are very helpful on flat surfaces.
  • Klownboy · 1 year ago
Somethin that's still not clear to me: Can you paint over (or glue on top of, a future/clear wash effect after it's dried?
Anything extra you have to do for paint adhesion?

Order delivery seem to be pretty quick.
Ordered this book, a Cobra II and some other stuff to get to the free shipping point; ordered on a Thursday AM. At my house 3+ days later on a Monday afternoon.

Having read this book cover to cover i find it to be a cornucopia of really useful info and advice. Having painted figures and tanks for many years the techniques shown in this book made look like a beginner.......grrr :-(
Kleer is a floor polish varnish and its acrylic and mixes well with inks tho not tried it with new washes. It dries quickly and leaves shiney finish. Yes you can paint over it with no problem. Kleer is made by the Johnson & Johnson Group here in the UK.
To clean resin i always use a fine cleaning powder like Ajax, an old tooth brush plenty of water and like it suggests in the book sanding blocks. Also when cleaning resin with sanding blocks and files etc always wear a mask resin dust is nasty stuff.
This should remove the releasing agent and leave fine scoring on the resin which gives undercoat a surface key. Also allow undercoat good 24hrs to dry before you start painting model.
