Bell of Lost Souls: RUMORS: Space Hulk Chatter

  • PenelopeTheWonderPony · 8 months ago
Maybe this means that GW is about to launch a new member of the GW Hobby Supplies- GW AA batteries! Priced at £12 for a blister pack of three...
  • daddy · 8 months ago
heh heh! yeah but you need 4 GW AA batteries to play it...
  • Sathos · 8 months ago
    lol

I have been desperately trying to think what they could possibly want batteries for in a 40k universe game.... if its for the flashy doors I can see the game costing £100 which would quite frankly be a joke.
tacky led lighting in the corridoors?
    talking battleship sfx?

or maybe it will have a built in c d player with that album by bolt thrower....
  • mordiano · 8 months ago
They did something about khorne right?? But if i remember right it was kind of heavy, and would therefore scare of the kids!!!

Im going for the sliding doors :)
  • Dajanitor · 8 months ago
    Holy Crap this sounds amazing.

I hope these rumours stand true and become a reality.
  • mordiano · 8 months ago
Interesting indeed, only thing is that the text should say best GW Warhammer 40k boardgame..

Best 40k boardgame is of course SPACE CRUSADE!! :)
  • Anonymous · 8 months ago
    Seconded :D
  • Sathos · 8 months ago
    chant with me....

    hehehe
  • adam · 8 months ago
HELL YEAH!! space crusade was what got me into the hobby first, so yeah im kinda biased, it is the BEST 40k boardgame. (ive actually been trying to make an entire space hulk to go over the top of my old crusade boards, taking way longer than i had anticipated tho)
  • Angelic_Despot · 8 months ago
Same here. I remember those great adverts on tv... I loved the game. In fact; I introduced it to my 10 year old cousin a few months ago. He had a few 40K figures but wasn't really getting the game. He loved it, bought a copy on ebay... And I'm seeing him again tomorrow to have another game.
I don't know why GW don't do something similar these days.
  • Mr. Pants · 8 months ago
Sure space crusade is the best 40K board game....in crazyland.
  • Drop Trooper · 8 months ago
YAY!! this'll be tops, but I agree with Alex They should re-do Space crusade, as the game that brought me into the hobby i'd really like to see it. In fact every time i hear 'space crusade' my first thought is of the Imperial Fists and their heavy weapon suspencers.
  • orkistotle · 8 months ago
    Huh???? Batteries???? Batteriers. Batteries!!!!!! Woohoo!
  • The David · 8 months ago
    dream on
  • bsmoove · 8 months ago
Please. Please. Please let this be true. I'm not too bothered about batteries and whatnot... but plastic modular board pieces with new terminators and genestealers would be simply glorious. I'm taking deep breaths and trying not to get my hopes up...
  • nurglespuss · 8 months ago
Hmmmm... Rather than resurrecting old board games, I'd like to see more support for modeling. Bits kits, conversion packs and the like. I'd also like to see a redevelopment of GW coloured spray paint.

Space Hulk was OK but I must admit as far as GW modular board games go, warhammer quest was a far better game design, and much faster to play (and therefore more accessible) than space hulk. I think the nostalgia connection makes a lot of people forget that this was a game meant to bridge the gap between boar games and wargaming, and so is a dilution of both (while being an enhancement in other elements).

But I'll with-hold judgement until something concrete appears.
  • Matthew Rider · 8 months ago
I realy hope this is at least half as good as it seems to be lol

But if it is as good as it is rumored to be my head may explode in excitement
  • AshHammer · 8 months ago
Oh man. I used to recommend to customers to buy the last version of this when I worked at a game store. It came with 10 plastic terminators. So when they wanted to get a set of plastic terminators, I tell them for twice as much money you get a whole bunch of Genestealers and a WHOLE other game too.
I must have sold about 40 sets that way. My manager loved me.
  • Ranma711 · 8 months ago
Space Hulk was one the few games I do not own a copy of :(
So I hope this rumour is very true and if so I would be at my local store buying it on day one.
  • Jonathan · 8 months ago
Oh please oh please oh please....let this be good.

If true these rumours are frankly arousing.
  • Anon · 8 months ago
I'm all in on everything except the batteries. Please, oh, please don't let it be the 40k version of Talking Battleship....

  • Anonannoyed · 8 months ago
Flashback from 2029: "The best thing about Space Hulk was the 10-20 hours of modeling required to get it into playing shape. Fun! Once you factor in the special effects (provided by BATTERIES and LEDS! Look out Atari!), it's sad this was overlooked for the true classic it was. Nowadays the $200 ($500 in today's dollars!) price tag looks like a pure pittance when pristine sets are going for as much as a grand."

Sarcasm (very temporarily) aside, I am hoping they can focus on getting a fun game out to GAMERS and not be so blinded by their own bullshit that they essentially release a pretty set of figures and terrain for 40k.
  • Sathos · 8 months ago
Depends on the definition here of "GAMERS" ... frankly I feel it should be done the same way the original was, a tantalising glimpse at 40k whilst actually being almost nothing to do with it thus redefining to "BOARD GAMERS" ie father and son bored on a saturday night and dont fancy another game of monopoly this week...BANG the ultimate sci-fi assault game!!!!!!!!!

or similar lol. I must say the idea for plastic corridoors unless prepainted seems a bad one as you will just end up with an extremely bland looking game by today's standards.

Unless they are aiming it at us, the players of 40k.... okay, why bother? a small variant rulebook would do as we have the kit already unless they are thinking more like assault on black reach style.
  • Anonannoyed · 8 months ago
Got it in one. Unpainted plastic and tons of kit to assemble makes for a very unappealing boardgame unless they're just aiming at a (percentage) of their 40k players.
  • daveisdvd · 8 months ago
Yeah I think I'm not concerned with electronics, but I imagine they are making it to be integrated with regular 40k. This will be great for modelers working on fort constructs or spaceship internal combat battlefields. We'll see how it turns out I guess but it will probably be worth buying for most gamers.
  • Brother_Marius · 8 months ago
I hope this turns into something close to the rumor... I can't wait to play it and then try 40k rules in it :D
  • bucho · 8 months ago
The previous sets were supposedly really expensive to produce with all the card stock corridors (as they didn't do those in-house) but if it is all plastic, I can see them seeing it as a cheap outlay to get a big boost to sales. AND get ongoing sales from selling additional corridor sprues or upgrade sprues to get additional new rooms and the like.

I hope they support it like they did for the 1st edition of space hulk, rather than the one off sort of deal they did for the 2nd edition of space hulk.

either way, I am more than happy to hear it is out september this year!
  • Joe Wright · 8 months ago
I'm really excited for this. I came late to the game, and I've constantly heard great things about Space Hulk, so I'm waiting with proverbially bated breath.
  • RobK · 8 months ago
First, let me say that I am minorly excited about the release of the box set, but not for Space Hulk.

I did play Space Hulk once (a loooooong time ago) and I used to play Warhammer Quest a little too. But I didn't see those becoming a major part of my hobby time. What I did do a lot was use the space Hulk boards to play a house-rule heavy 40k and used the WHQ boards to play true Dungeonbowl!

I do hope the part about modular plastic boards is ture, because I would like to add them to my collection. What I would also like is some support for linking 40k units into Space Hulk games, or making the rules modular tot he main 40k game set (like the 40k flash ruleset), as opposed to a totally different set of rules for how to use the same (marine and genestealer) minis.
  • SinSynn · 8 months ago
ummm...ok I never played Space Hulk, but calling it the best 40k boardgame seems strange. Bust boardgame compared to...what? The world is not exactly rife with 40k boardgames.
I can't really get anything but angry hearing this. 40k is, to me-and I know I'm alone on this one, so please, allow me my insanity- just a big ol' mess right now. Ork players have sprung up everywhere- former 'nid and necron players, mostly, and Nob biker lists are every 2nd army I see, the other being chaos. The game is extremely unbalanced right now, and I kinda get the feeling that the upcoming IG Codex release will not alleviate the situation at all.
So many armies need codexes, but we get.....Space Hulk?!?
Whatever. Wake me when we've gotten over the initial 'ooh-brite shiny new toy' phase and moved on. Like with Cities of Death, or any of the other 'specialist' games.
    Y'know what's stupid? Me. I'll probably buy it. I'm a victim. Dammit!
  • 2kewl4skewl · 8 months ago

  • Mike X · 8 months ago
"The best Warhammer 40k boardgame ever made"? Isn't it the ONLY 40K-based board game?
  • Sevej · 8 months ago
I think there was space crusade, and a light wargame called Armageddon if I'm not mistaken. I just hope that It'll be affordable (the new space hulk...)
  • denzark · 8 months ago
Advanced space crusade, some thing with ASC hive ship board and terminators, Armageddon, Horus Heresy, technically Space fleet as that came with boards (and my vote for best 40K board game with the expanded WD rules), Ultramarines (scouts on a space hulk board).

Whilst I don't begrudge GW fro re-releasing Space Hulk again, since after all it was a cool game, I just feel they should be putting their resources elsewhere. If the current rumors are true, then by the end of this year, we can except to only see two 40k codices and one warhammer army book released. This is a bit poor especially when you realise that this will make only three 40k codices released one and a half years after they released 5th edition. And it is likely that they will all be Imperial codices. As a result of this, I feel that 40k will lose a lot of players as they move onto other systems that are better supported since it gets a bit boring facing Space marines, Orks and Imperial Guard.

My feeling are the same for Planetstrike. Why release a game system that will include all armies when no one wants to play over half the armies due to outdated codices? "I could play Planetstrike but it's not worth play with my outdated rules so I won't bother...", is what I expect to start hearing a lot more of.
  • denzark · 8 months ago
A re-release of SH would, if Deathwing and Genestealer rules were also on the cards, would be a more significant release than any codex (except Squats!).

However, remember when miniatures cost £2.99 for 3-4 - and the blisters had a blurb about how they weren't toys - they were finally detailed models and not recommended for children under 14?

Well you can argue about how some children are more mature at a younger age (although the etiquette posts always target the younger age group with the harshest infractions) but the last thing the hobby needs is to go further down a toy-like route by putting BATTERIES in the bloody thing - they are models not toys - I can suspend disbelief that they don't really kill each other in a myriad of heinous ways so I certainly don't need effing sound effects PIAOW PIAOW etc.
  • Hyperion · 4 months ago
hehehe they are so toys... and the sound effects are what makes the game fun... lighten up willya
  • duder · 8 months ago
While I'm all for more codex releases over anything else, I will always support a GW specialist game!
  • Big J · 8 months ago
Batteries? Does it pleasure me while I play too?
  • Mr. Pants · 8 months ago
Oh how quickly everyone forgets about the rumors from a couple years ago.

    Timers, people. Timers.
    Electronics use batteries.
Sand timers are more expensive to produce in mass quantities than electronic counterparts are.
Therefore if a timer is reintroduced, then it will be electronic.
  • sjap · 8 months ago
Yes Mr.Pants you might be on the money!
    Timers is the logical thought,
Space Hulk brought me to 40k. It was claustrophobic, and with the countdown for the termies player it always gave me the feel of the last scenes of the first "Alien" movie (Sigourney Weaver escaping the ship while the countdown for autodestruct is counting down).

    i can't wait.
my wife will kill me (there's almost no room left for new games in the the house...)
  • SoulPhr34k · 8 months ago
Space Hulk was my baptismal experience for the 40K universe, as such I have the fondest memories of playing it. The plastic board stuff sounds good, and updated models would be fantastic.

My one true wish for the re-release, however, is an expanded set of optional rules for bringing the other armies into the game. I really can't help but think how great it would be to bring Chaos Space Marines, Tau, Necron, or even another Tyranid hive into the Hulk instead of Space Marines.

Heck CSM, SoB, Grey Knights should be an easy adaption, right?
  • TheInnerGeek · 8 months ago
Original Space Hulk had rules for pretty much all races when White Dwarf articles are taken into account. Google around a bit and you may just be able to download the whole shebang.
  • denzark · 8 months ago
Original Space Hulk had rules for Terminators, Traitors Terminators, Genestealers and hybrids, and also power armour marines. I didn't see rules for anyone else (although the space wolf campaign may have had some specifics for their better h-t-h.)

May be you are thinking of Advance Space Crusade which had army lists for Guard, Orks etc.
  • TheInnerGeek · 8 months ago
Eldar put in via Citadel Journal #5, article by Ian Pickstock.

I'm sure I saw IG in somewhere too, but I'll concede that one as I can only find peoples online rules for them.
  • Mr. Pants · 8 months ago
Imperial guard, eldar, eldar harlequins, chaos space marines, traitor terminators, even tyranids before genestealers were part of the tyranid list.

Lots of kooky stuff was thrown in there. But the added stuff never matched the eloquence of the original game or the deathwing expansion. They all paled in comparison.

Its one of the reasons why I really hope that the game is just termies and stealers. It would be nice to include other races, but the mechanics get bogged down and the frail yet perfect balance that the original had get easily compromised.
  • Mr. Pants · 8 months ago
oops forgot normal space marines as well.
  • TheInnerGeek · 8 months ago
Bring on the Hulk! It'll be hard to top the classic game though. Bells and whistles are only cool for getting attention and making noise. I hope the new game can back up the noise.
  • izzysplace · 8 months ago
if they are true I may just make sticky pants
  • xNickBaranx · 8 months ago
I was never a huge fan of the last edition but this edition sounds awesome. And even if I don't like the game itself - if there are plastic modular hulk sections, I'm going to be one happy modeler.
  • squighound · 8 months ago
My local store manager said September, £60. But what do they know?
  • PaD · 8 months ago
I have heard (a completely unsubstantiated rumour, admittedly) that the new version would be just a Rules/Scenarios Book, with accompanying plastic board sections sold as separate kits – a’la Cities Of Death buildings….

Either way, I can’t wait. I’ve started painting half a dozen AOBR Termie Squads in anticipation!
  • Culial · 8 months ago
    Hmmm...mixed feelings for this one.

More Terminators - Who ever has enough? May even round me off to a full First Company!

Plastic Boards - Hells yeah! and if GW have any sense (yeah, right...) they'll make them compatible with the CoD stuff (at least size-wise)

Batteries - Meh, even Monopoly needs these nowadays (for the credit card reader)

Rules - Here's where I get stuck. If they're anything like the Update on the GW Website a while back, I think I'll just buy it for the gubbins. Seemed far too complicated! I much preferred the Anphillion Base corridor fighting rules, more like 40K+ than a different system as Space Hulk Update was.

I've got to be honest though, I'm ruddy excited for all of this!
  • wraithcannon · 8 months ago
I'll be looking at it not only for the rules, but also for the possible use with Necromunda.

I'll probably buy 2, one to paint up the miniatures for, then swap them for the unpainted ones in the second box when my nephews open it on Christmas morning so they can set down and play right away.

Nothing says Merry Christmas like stormbolter fire.
  • Sathos · 8 months ago
Am I the only one to have spotted a potential marketing failure in this rhumour....

Plastic corridoors woop! amazing! brilliant! fantastic!

Now tell me, do your models look "woop! amazing! brilliant! fantastic!" when you take off that clear film of a new box of whatever and open it? or do they look like bland grey plastic thats gunna really need some work.

I cant see GW going prepainted just yet... would they go as tacky as stickers?

Will children open this on christmas day, look at the box in delight and then open it, look at a mess of grey plastic, shove it to one side and break out a football or something.

Plastic corridoors sounds awesome to a modeller who already builds and paints his terrain but to someone grabbing this as the standalone awesomeness that it used to be I can smell fresh, grey, disappointment.

Its your move GW, roll a six and make it a good one.
  • Andrew Cluetain · 8 months ago
    Just don't Roll "ONEZIE"!!

Anyway, I was concidering getting a 4th edtion book for kill team rules, and ebaying a space hulk, how ever Space Hulk may be just that (espicaly because the rules and 'Space Hulk' kill team are gone from GW site) As for batteies, I think, other than a timer, these are pure fiction. However all the other goodies, including plastic corrdors and rooms are cool!! Also if it's rule system is eather A: like 40K or B: you can addapt 40K rules for it; ALL factions can play, that will be sweet
  • Tony teh Lurker · 8 months ago
I really hope that if this rumour is true, the following is done:

    - Loyalist and Traitor Termie rules (to allow for 3 player all in brawl).

    - Not just Genestealers, but guants or some other leaser nids included.

    - & some boss type nid (say a Zoat or something unique to this box set)

I just think, given that 'stealres are now elite nids, other nids should be chucked in for some variety.
  • PenelopeTheWonderPony · 8 months ago
The only thing I can see GW adding to the original teams, and the only thing I'd WANT to see them add, is a Broodlord. It seems perfectly fitting to use as a "boss creature", plus it fits the whole "Aliens" vibe- although then we'd need a Sentinel Power Lifter too...
  • Tony the Lurker · 8 months ago
Well in Aliens, we have facehuggers, bugs and the queen,

So with SH, we could have Rippers, Stealers, and broodlord.

I dont know what could be a power lifter apart from a dread, which would be a bit silly.
  • Azhrarn · 8 months ago
There is a Forge World Sentinel Power-lifter which should do exactly what you want it to do. :D
  • Joe Wright · 8 months ago
Anyone remember seeing that green of the broodlord with feeder tendrils on Warseer? Because I do.

And if they have included full plastic characters in Assault on Black Reach and Battle For Skull Pass, I don't think it'd be out of the realm of possibility for them to include maybe a Terminator Captain and his Broodlord adversary.

Also, agree with some others: the timer would (should) be the only thing GW makes that needs batteries.
  • Bloodthirster · 8 months ago
is anyone else thinking what i'm thinking space hulk terrain for the badab BoLS book it would easily pass as a space marine ship surely and the rules would work along side perfectly
  • Edchopp · 8 months ago
If this is true then that would be awesome. However (and this is just conjecture here) does anyone remember the movie rumour from last year? It said that a movie would be released on DVD in september of this year. Might it be a Tie in with Space Hulk? Just a thought. Oh and if anyone else has thought of this then I apologise I don't want to step on anyones toes.
  • Bucho · 8 months ago
looks like in the move we have lost some of the comments off this posting...
  • pierce raats · 7 months ago
These kind of games are always gonna be fun, and even if it isn't; i cant see this not being worthwhile to get even if the rules suck as long as there are cool stealers, termies, and especially 3d plastic ship interiors. Just think of the awesome gameboards you will be able to make, i would use it for normal 40k and kill-team games too.
Also, how hard would it be to combine or link games of battlefleetgothic, space hulk, and planetstrike games of 40k.

"oh, your going to call down a rok with your strategic asset? not if my termies can disable your tractor beams by turn 3."
