Bell of Lost Souls: SNEAK PEAK: Dawn of War II Campaigns

  • Rook · 1 year ago
I saw this on the IG message boards a few days ago, and I must say, it looks pretty sweet! I just hope my computer can handle it...
  • Cognitive · 1 year ago
you got rpg in my rts
  • Miami · 1 year ago
Indeed, Cognitive! It looks like they're trying to appeal to all those WoW players out there. It'll be interesting to see what the finished product looks like. Does anyone know if there are campaigns other than the Space Marines?
  • Darkseer · 1 year ago
I agree with you. It's very similar to Warcraft,,,,which completely puts me off.

I want to play 40K as a computer game, not Warcraft in a 40K wrapping.
I think I'll stick with the original Dawn of War series.

Yes, I'm sure there are campaigns other than the space marines.
You have Eldar, Orks, Marines and Tyranids in this one.
  • Madjob · 1 year ago
No, there are not, actually. Relic is returning to focusing solely on Space Marines for the campaign of Dawn of War II. All 4 factions will of course be playable in multiplayer, which from what we have been told will differ somewhat in gameplay compared to the campaign. What exactly they mean by that we don't really know yet.

    Hmm.

RTS games have had skill upgrades and "RPG" elements for much longer than there has been a WoW. Even 40k strategy games have been doing it - Rites of War (arguably the best 40k game) for example.

I've not seen the video, as they wont load at work, but I'll take a look at it tonight!
  • Clepto · 1 year ago
It looks like a squad-based Diablo. Actually it kinda reminds me of Fallout: Tactics, except on a larger scale. And real-time. And good.
  • Daeval · 1 year ago
I think you mean it reminds you of Chaos Gate, but in real time, and less crashy. :P
  • Parcival · 1 year ago
Oh yes, Chaos gate was wonderful. =)

While watching the trailer, I was thinking more of Diablo II and Warcraft III than e.g. Command & Conquer as well. I have to say I like the DoW II approach, though they could probably sell to me any game with a 40K tag on it.

Does anybody know wether there will be one for the Mac?
  • xbruthamanx · 1 year ago
I am glad someone else mentioned it. Dawn of War 2 is not going to be "like" other games you are familiar with. It actually "IS" a recreation of a 1998 game http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000:_...
but not turn based and hopefully able to be played past the lord of change :)
  • Mac · 1 year ago
Looks good...but a side note. I was under the impression THQ was a British company so why the American voice-over?
  • Ktan · 1 year ago
Relic, who are developing it, are Canadian, I believe.

I don't know, I have serious doubts about DoW2... they're moving into WC3 area with smaller squads and such and I hated WC3. I loved DoW1but this is straying pretty heavily from standard RTS game play. Granted I think a bunch of RTS gameplay is fairly dated and could use some innovation... still not sure smaller squads and no base building is the answer.
  • Madjob · 1 year ago
No base building I think is something that the RTS genre has needed for a long time. It's outdated and simply doesn't make sense, even with the strategic points innovation Relic made with DoW.

And smaller squad based combat could be interesting but I am unconvinced at this point that it's something that works for Warhammer 40,000, at least in the manner they are presenting it. If this were a Space Hulk game I would be much more enthusiastic about the direction they are taking.
  • faultie · 1 year ago
Yeah, I agree. From what I can tell, it's WC3, but 40k styled.

However, I think that until we have intelligent AI that you can say "assault that area using 'x' tactics" and then go off and command something else, smaller squads is what we're going to have.
  • saphius · 1 year ago
I think Endwar might be a game to look at... It's not out yet but some of the concepts and AI that have been put into the game are supposed to be pretty good.

If Endwar AI is as good as it's been presented, then the RTS market might be in for a big change in the following year or two.
  • MarcusZ · 1 year ago
I don't think they are moving down the Warcraft3 lane at all, and somebody who compares this to WoW certainly hasn't played that :p

In fact they are moving quite a bit away from the RTS genre in general an more towards squad-based tactic games like Commandos or the Space Marine Tactics game on the Nintendo DS (which was brilliant, but I forgot the name ...)

Since this is actually quite similar to how I play RTS games anyway (optimizing synergies between different units, keeping losses as low as possible, etc. I really do like this new approach. It is more in line with the books or the fluff in general, or maybe small games with less than 1000 Points and not so much like Apocalypse, but it definitely captures the 40K spirit.

DoW was/is a good RTS, DoW2 looks like it is shaping up to become a good tactic game. I have to agree though, that it is a bit strange that they use DoW2 as a name for something that appears to be quite different from the original DoW...
  • Anon · 1 year ago
The DS game was Squad Commander, and it was also released on PSP. Interesting game, needed a few extra layers of polish (and voice actors).
  • WarHamster · 1 year ago
i think it's also been influenced by company of heroes, especially the way cover works now. i really can't wait for this. :)
  • TheInnerGeek · 1 year ago
Ditto! I may have to go home and punish some Nazis tonight! Company of Heroes is one of my top two RTS of all time, along with DoW. Bringing the two closer together is a great idea in my opinion.
  • shadowsilver03 · 1 year ago
This is the same video they were showing at GamesDay UK, not that it makes it any less cool.

I've heard various comments that it seems to be going along more of a company of heroes route (not that I can comment, haven't played CoH)
  • Admiral Halsey · 1 year ago
    I'm skepetical.

Someone got RTS in my RPG. And it sure as hell doesn't look like 40k. I mean thats clearly a space marine. But he seems to have left behind his other 7 squad members to go poncing around in a three.
And did I here him say force commander? Isn't that the techincal term for the captain in charge of the battle area if multiple companys are involved? Is he really walking around with that smaller escort?

... Great graphics, maybe good game, but warhammer? Not seeing it yet.

Also, Dawn of War two? Show me the links to DOW. Just one. Except they both have blood ravens.

I'll be in line when the store opens on release day for this one. It looks to have taken all the right ques from Company of Heroes plus given me the chance to customize squads. I think it will rock. Although, to be honest, I think the Blood Bowl game is going to rock too, so take my opinion with a grain of salt!
  • Madjob · 1 year ago
Hah, why do I have to be pessimistic about your opinion because you think Blood Bowl will be good? From the interviews I've been reading and stuff I've seen, the team working on that seems to have a much better handle on reaching the original playerbase of the board game than Relic ever had of 40k, to the point where they're practically making 2 different games, 1 for purists with a traditional turn based flow, and another for newer players with real time, though to be honest I really can't wait to try both!
  • Miggidy_Mack · 1 year ago
It really looks like DOW2 is coming along great. Can't wait to see the finished game!
  • Xas · 1 year ago
I want 40k on an epic/apokalypse scale like supreme commander but without base building :(

but tactics game could be fun too so we'll see. as long as pathfinding is better than in DOW (so no squads get stuck cause 3 people off diferent squads went up snogging behind some wierdly placed tree...) it will be cool

I loved the original Dawn of War PC games series and made some time to play them just to see how THQ made the beloved tabletop game spring to life. DoW II looks great, but I'm unlikely to get it because:
    1) My PC is now too old to run it.
    2) I have too many real GW models to work on and doing so is still way more fun than playing a computer game for me. With massive ongoing projects for both new and existing armies of models, it will save me some time and money by staying away from DoW II.
  • Urien · 1 year ago
THQ really needs to invest in a better movie player plugin, that one is terrible.
  • Madjob · 1 year ago
Having seen this video a little while ago already I've had some time to think about what I've been seeing and I've got more than a few concerns.

When details about Dawn of War II were first coming out, I was ecstatic. Interactive cityscapes with an active cover system, Space Marines deploying in numbers closer to what you would find in written fluff, campaign persistant consequences of casualties, and a Warboss that wasn't Gorgutz (look, I enjoyed him in Dawn of War, but I honestly wanted to see someone different in this new game, but more on that later...) Some alarms went off in the back of my head when I read little blurbs about "collecting wargear" and "acid chainswords" but I pushed them aside and waited in anticipation for more info.

Time passed and the biggest news soon became the new intro animation, which is very nice, though with it came the news that once again we would have a female Farseer leading the Eldar forces. Sidestepping any arguments about gender representation in 40k, this disappointed me as I really wanted to see less more of the same as far as representation of the various armies of 40k went. I certainly was happy once the full movie was revealed and we learned of the Tyranids being included as the 4th army.

Now lots of details about the campaign have been coming out, and that alarm I had been hearing earlier is going full force. The Warboss we have seen dies early in the campaign and is replaced by Gorgutz. Wargear dropping left and right from filthy aliens (inexplicably of Imperial make) is apparently picked up and wielded with abandon by Space Marines, squads are much smaller than I had expected, and our squad leaders can never die because the plot can't afford to lose them. There are BOSS FIGHTS, something the industry still cannot seem to escape in genres where it is no longer appropriate. The squad-based tactics we have been promised are painfully simple and obvious and are nothing new: Having a Librarian use Smite on a squad from the enemy's flank while other marines ran up in the original DoW gave us the same thing as what we see in this video, and I have trouble seeing what else there could be if this is all there is to it. The leveling system I do not mind so much but it seems rather basic and not very engaging, so I ask "What's the point?"

I will continue to follow development of the game but I'm already sorely disappointed with the direction the sequel has taken. This, coupled with the Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine game, seems to be shaping up for a very gross misrepresentation of the IP in the coming years to a large number of people completely new to the setting and I don't look forward to how it will affect the inevitable new influx of tabletop players.

I already saw this at gamesday but I loved it
  • Kenzaburo · 1 year ago
I liked what I saw, even if the embedded vid on here was too small to make things out. But I was under the impression, DoW 2 would also be brought to the Xbox 360, yet the developer mentioned only a PC release. Did it get cancelled or did I just miss something?
  • Tonelowke · 1 year ago
I'm not going to let any pre-concieved notions about the game get in the way of how cool this looks. I'll wait for the reviews to come out closer to release, and if they are good, i'll buy it. Plain and simple.
  • Veahirin · 1 year ago
I really think I would like to see a Warhammer (40k or WHFB) game that is more like Rome Total War and less like Command and Conquer. Not that I don't love C&C cause I do. But I think a 40k: Total war game would just be sick! Think about it, if you don't know much about the Total War series, look it up. It would be great.

In other news about GW games, what is everyones thought on Warhammer online?

This seems really cool it's going to be a completely different style of play but if that means that I'm not harrased every second by enemies on the offensive then I really don't mind!
Interesting the idea of cover being more important. Also did I hear right that the squad leaders come back to life but can't do anything until their 'revived' somehow?
  • paelkeizah · 1 year ago
yep and reinforcing means that dead troops come from drop pods that can land on various things

This looks pretty darn slick! I know quite a lot of people that are fans of the "typical" RTS style of DOW 1, so I hope this version doesn't put players off of what looks to be an otherwise interesting game.

I'm quite looking forward to this game!
