REAL WORLD: Bolters are Real!
Uh then you're not really into RTS. DoW2 does not look like an RTS. Do you see any resource management in any of the tralers? Dow2 is not RTS. It's a dungeon raid.
Seems like your into the RTSBAMFC Genre....
Or we could, I dunno to keep classifications of games easy, call them all RTS's because they are happening in real time, and involve strategy. Maybe it's just me?
The fact that a game is "real time" doesn't make it RTS. Otherwise FPSs would be considered RTS since...uh they are in real-time. By your definition, anything not turn-based would be RTS...which is why you're wrong.
"In an RTS, as in other wargames, the participants position and maneuver units and structures under their control to secure areas of the map and/or destroy their opponents' assets. In a typical RTS it is possible to create additional units and structures during the course of a game. This is generally limited by a requirement to expend accumulated resources. These resources are in turn garnered by controlling special points on the map and/or possessing certain types of units and structures devoted to this purpose. More specifically, the typical game of the RTS genre features resource gathering, base building, in-game technological development and indirect control of units."
that includes the DoW method of resource management
Hehe can you say cheese!
Really looking forward to the game, but I think that was a bit....disappointing!
Is it just the need to complain about all things GW related and then hand over cash to them anyway?
I want to play this game because I adore the series, regardless of the bugs that every game is bound to have.
As for those that want to complain about the game, tell us how much it will suck and so on... do us all a favor, and don't buy the game.
GW is now sliding backwards. What's next FireWarrior2? Anyone wonder why the 40k mod community is so active? It's basic market forces in action. There is a void for games with 40k content and GW struggles to deliver. We have a great universe to pull content from. Unfortunately it seems that GW execs still don't have a clue on how to convert 40k into quality gameplay, or even a good movie.
It's like watching Stan Lee all over again. How many horrible Marvel adaptations were there until X-Men, Spiderman, Hulk, Iron Man came out? They may not have been perfect, but they represented a new generation of production and thinking f(and profit) or Marvel comics. Why can't GW learn from its past?
While there would have been outcry about them not working on a new DoW title, Relic really should have just taken the ideas they had for DoWII and made a Space Hulk game. I'd have bought it.
Let's face it, DoWII is meant to appeal to the small squad player, and that generally means younger audiences (who have not yet matured to RTS playing) and older gamers who like a lot of flash and hard to kill units without the nonsense of resource expenditures. Hopefully if they hit enough youngsters those same kiddies will Google Warhammer 40K and maybe get into the hobby, further driving sales (and bankrupting their parents).
Personally, I think that this is a good thing, but my only gripe is that it should not be called Dawn of War. This is basically a glorified Kill Teams game, so it should probably have a suitably grim name, like Warhammer 40,000: Spearhead. Leave DoW titles for Strategy-oriented games and produce two different games.
They just made it a bit easier during development and combined both into one unit type in the game. I don't think, that was a bad thing at all.
If you are making a computer game out of something you always have to make changes, or you end up with a perfect "conversion" of the original, but a really bad computer game at the same time.
I mean seriously: a "true" computer version of Warhammer(40K) would have to be turn based... but that would only appeal to very few "oldschool, hardcore gamers" (not meant in a negative way). It would be hard to make money with such a game.
On topic: I'm looking forward to DoW II. I like the new direction they are taking, going even further away from the classic RTS game.
I want to play it anyway ;)
And as for the Scout Sergeant, that guy looks like he came from the Space Wolf chapter...
As for voices, Cyrus is being voiced by the guy who did the Defilers from Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Corruption. That guy has an AWESOME voice, he'll be fine as a sneaky bastard (he's got experience).
"he'll be fine as a sneaky bastard (he's got experience)."
That's for certain: he was the Vindicare in previous DoW titles. Were it not for the voice filters applied to his recordings for the Vindicare, he'd sound exactly like the Space Marine Scout character.
Looks fantastic, just hope single player campaign is enjoyable.
Game looks awesome, can't wait.
The voice acting's a tad grating, though. The original DoW, barring a few exceptions, had some excellent voice work. Who can imagine a Librarian with any other voice now? Here's hoping that this is just a bad selection.
soulstorm is worse than what i've heard so far. ;)
BTW: you all know, that we have no real clue about the story. You all know, that all we seen are only teasers, not the whole game or the possibilities you will have while playing a campaign or quest.
Don't criticise a game only by a bunch of vids. Maybe it's the best W40K computer game you've ever seen and played, maybe not.
Instead what we have been given reeks of a console conversion, or WoW squad-based bastardization. The gameplay we have seen so far looks scripted. The missions look like they are simply guiding the player along a mission path. Doesn't look like much of an explorable (or usable) world outside of what they are going to feed you along the path. Multiplayer looks like it will be some sort of squad-based MMORPG PvP. Space Marines ala Neverwinter Nights.
This may appeal to a lot of players and that's fine. But for at least some of us I think we were expecting an expansion on DoW, not a downsizing.
nuff said
So maybe "Patrol" scenarios are more your schtick. That's fine. Ever play a 1500+ point SM battle? It's definitely more than 20 guys, and most would say more rewarding. And yes it's fun to play against an Ork Waagh!, but that usually means 150+ Orks (DoW or tabletop)...not the 20 they've shown in the trailers. The point that some of us are making is that this probably doesn't deserve to be in the "DoW" lineage. Call it "DoW Patrol" or DoW Dungeon Raid" because that's what it is shaping up to be.
The scale has changed, the gameplay has changed, but it doesn't look like change for the better. It's too bad to see them dumb it down (don't get me started on "Space Marine" and its stupid "execution moves"....yawn) to try for broader appeal. The scenery and models look great, but what about the gameplay? Running around in gothic settings, and commanding your favorite 40k units is fun at first, but if the game lacks content and depth it will fall flat.
I am hoping there is more we haven't seen that will hopefully appeal to the core of DoW players. Right now this is looking like a bargain bin title, not a $59.99 GOTY.
Fluffwise a company of SM should take on a whole Waagh or capture one planet, etc....
Tabletop wise, well, in 1500 point games you should either have 150+ orks and 5 SM or 30 SM + gear and 700 orks....a BIG no no either way...it's just balancing, guys....can't have someone buy 700 minis and his oponent only 30-40 pcs. can we? ;)
Ahh...the memories...i still remember the comic Damnation Crusade where 1 neophyte of the Black Templars was cutting down dozens of orks....:)))))
