Hm, nice video, but I don't like the voices at all.
  • faultie · 1 year ago
I am looking forward to another chapter in a very enjoyable franchise.
  • timmy · 1 year ago
Most RTS players are looking forward to Starcraft II, but I'm looking forward to Dawn of War 2! From what I've seen this looks awesome so far. I love the DoW series. I love how Relic interprets the 40k setting. I love that I don't have to mine crystals and gas. :)
  • Anonymouse · 1 year ago
"I love that I don't have to mine crystals and gas. :)"

Uh then you're not really into RTS. DoW2 does not look like an RTS. Do you see any resource management in any of the tralers? Dow2 is not RTS. It's a dungeon raid.
  • Havik110 · 1 year ago
there will be resource management in the multi player games as far as I have heard. The single player part of the game will not focus on it however
  • saphius · 1 year ago
Uh... Am I missing something? Doesn't RTS stand for Real Time Strategy? Does DoW2 happen in RT - Check. Does it involve Strategy? - Check. Seems like it is a RTS.... Does it involve Building and Mining for Crap? - Possibly not...
Seems like your into the RTSBAMFC Genre....

Or we could, I dunno to keep classifications of games easy, call them all RTS's because they are happening in real time, and involve strategy. Maybe it's just me?
  • Anonymouse · 1 year ago
Yeah you are missing something. You're confusing RTS with RTT (Real-Time Tactics). Play some RTS games or do some reading and you will see that the RTS genre includes resources and expenditures (hey I didn't make up the term, it's common game developer knowledge...also check Wiki for the 'RTS' definition).

The fact that a game is "real time" doesn't make it RTS. Otherwise FPSs would be considered RTS since...uh they are in real-time. By your definition, anything not turn-based would be RTS...which is why you're wrong.
  • high_marshal · 1 year ago
that's just semantics, if you show the average person gameplay footage of starcraft and gameplay footage of DoW then they would say they are in the same genre.
  • Anonymouse · 1 year ago
Google 'RTS'; it'll help clear up your semantic problem.
  • high_marshal · 1 year ago
    ok. to quote Wikipedia:

"In an RTS, as in other wargames, the participants position and maneuver units and structures under their control to secure areas of the map and/or destroy their opponents' assets. In a typical RTS it is possible to create additional units and structures during the course of a game. This is generally limited by a requirement to expend accumulated resources. These resources are in turn garnered by controlling special points on the map and/or possessing certain types of units and structures devoted to this purpose. More specifically, the typical game of the RTS genre features resource gathering, base building, in-game technological development and indirect control of units."

that includes the DoW method of resource management
  • Anonymouse · 1 year ago
We are talking about DoW2 here. There is no doubt that DoW is an RTS. DoW2 single player is not going to be RTS (per THQ's words). Multi-player may have an RTS aspect to it.

Death and despair to anyone who wanted to take this game seriously!

    Hehe can you say cheese!
Really looking forward to the game, but I think that was a bit....disappointing!
  • static grass · 1 year ago
How can you look forward to something that you think is disappointing?

Is it just the need to complain about all things GW related and then hand over cash to them anyway?
  • Sons of Guilliman · 1 year ago
Going to have to agree with your statement.

I want to play this game because I adore the series, regardless of the bugs that every game is bound to have.

As for those that want to complain about the game, tell us how much it will suck and so on... do us all a favor, and don't buy the game.
  • Anonymouse · 1 year ago
Well a lot of probably won't buy this game unless THQ/GW puts together a compelling reason. I suspect a lot of people are going to wait to see what this thing turns into, and look for the game reviews. Instead of a quality FPS, we are going to be given a PoC like "Space Marine." Instead of a quality DoW follow-up, we are given a patrol based dungeon raid-type DoW2. Why is this so hard for GW?

GW is now sliding backwards. What's next FireWarrior2? Anyone wonder why the 40k mod community is so active? It's basic market forces in action. There is a void for games with 40k content and GW struggles to deliver. We have a great universe to pull content from. Unfortunately it seems that GW execs still don't have a clue on how to convert 40k into quality gameplay, or even a good movie.

It's like watching Stan Lee all over again. How many horrible Marvel adaptations were there until X-Men, Spiderman, Hulk, Iron Man came out? They may not have been perfect, but they represented a new generation of production and thinking f(and profit) or Marvel comics. Why can't GW learn from its past?
  • Madjob · 1 year ago
"Instead of a quality DoW follow-up, we are given a patrol based dungeon raid-type DoW2."

While there would have been outcry about them not working on a new DoW title, Relic really should have just taken the ideas they had for DoWII and made a Space Hulk game. I'd have bought it.
  • Anonymouse · 1 year ago
    Check out Net Hulk.
  • cavalier1864 · 1 year ago
I think that the major problem is less a lack of learning from past mistakes than a desperate need to get more products to market as quickly as possible (after all, many squad-based games worked well and were very popular). GW is trying to drive sales any which way that they can, and I think that DoWII will help them do that with younger audiences.

Let's face it, DoWII is meant to appeal to the small squad player, and that generally means younger audiences (who have not yet matured to RTS playing) and older gamers who like a lot of flash and hard to kill units without the nonsense of resource expenditures. Hopefully if they hit enough youngsters those same kiddies will Google Warhammer 40K and maybe get into the hobby, further driving sales (and bankrupting their parents).

Personally, I think that this is a good thing, but my only gripe is that it should not be called Dawn of War. This is basically a glorified Kill Teams game, so it should probably have a suitably grim name, like Warhammer 40,000: Spearhead. Leave DoW titles for Strategy-oriented games and produce two different games.
  • Latchford · 1 year ago
erm need i remind you all of Fire Warrior... exceedingly dissapointing game engine..yet didnt we all play it anyway JUST to use a bolter in an fps setting? :)
  • Dragonlv8 · 1 year ago
Looks like some much needed background fix's, I hate the fact that tactical squads can take 4 heavy weapons in DOW and now there are actually tactical squads and Devs, looks like it will work alot better, if Back ground is acurate and weapon strength ect ect then im all happy.
  • MarcusZ · 1 year ago
Well what was the difference between a tactical squad and a devastator squad anyway before 5th Edition came out? (besides the amount of heavy weapons of course)
They just made it a bit easier during development and combined both into one unit type in the game. I don't think, that was a bad thing at all.

If you are making a computer game out of something you always have to make changes, or you end up with a perfect "conversion" of the original, but a really bad computer game at the same time.

I mean seriously: a "true" computer version of Warhammer(40K) would have to be turn based... but that would only appeal to very few "oldschool, hardcore gamers" (not meant in a negative way). It would be hard to make money with such a game.

On topic: I'm looking forward to DoW II. I like the new direction they are taking, going even further away from the classic RTS game.

I keep hearing the Team Fortress 2 theme...
  • Timo · 1 year ago
Powerrangers? Captain Planet? What happend to the voices?!?

I want to play it anyway ;)
  • pinhead · 1 year ago
i loved the 1st one because the Huge spectacular battles and great gameplay.. commanding a few squads of marines are not as funny as commanding an army..i will still play it tho
  • iaguz · 1 year ago
Not as funny? It's apocalyptic conflict in the grim dark future! There's nothing funny about it!

And as for the Scout Sergeant, that guy looks like he came from the Space Wolf chapter...

As for voices, Cyrus is being voiced by the guy who did the Defilers from Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Corruption. That guy has an AWESOME voice, he'll be fine as a sneaky bastard (he's got experience).
  • Zamzoph · 1 year ago
More specifically, Cyrus is voiced by Steve Blum, famous for his role as Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop along with his very extensive voice acting career in many anime, cartoons, and video games. Definitely one of the most famous voice actors around.
  • Madjob · 1 year ago
I'm not much of a fan of Steve J. Blum anymore: he's literally EVERYWHERE, and doesn't do much to make himself sound different from role to role.

"he'll be fine as a sneaky bastard (he's got experience)."

That's for certain: he was the Vindicare in previous DoW titles. Were it not for the voice filters applied to his recordings for the Vindicare, he'd sound exactly like the Space Marine Scout character.

Really looking forward to this game. I have to ask though, what's up with the Sniper in that preview, did anyone else notice the Emo haircut? lol
  • relasine · 1 year ago
Looks neat. I hope there will still be vehicles, though. Has it been confirmed that this in fact will not be a building game, but rather a hybrid RPG?
  • Tsaroth · 1 year ago
Looks like Marines are going to be the default win again.
  • Anonymouse · 1 year ago
    Huh?
  • Si · 1 year ago
Hehe, sounds just like Chaos Gate. Isn't the "we are their doom" a direct quote?

Looks fantastic, just hope single player campaign is enjoyable.
  • TSINI · 1 year ago
ah man that takes me back, Chaos gate was so funny, the chanting hymns that sounded like "i'll never take soap from a lady" and firing missile launchers at lone berserkers, hehehe fun
  • Anonannoyed · 1 year ago
Those hymns were so hilarious! I also have "God is hungry, who wants nickels?" and "Chaos soup - it's the righteous soup!" burned into my brain forever.
  • iaguz · 1 year ago
Actually, scratch my earlier statement, Cyrus looks like John Bonham.
  • Shin_Ra · 1 year ago
im a little disappointed that there using the same voice actor from DOW 1 but the game play that there promising in campaign actually sounds fun. like a fable/rts game hopefully the campaign is not limited to just the blood raven.
  • grimsnikk · 1 year ago
I think its fine that a space marine Army in DoW2 is only going to be about 50 marines or so. Pretty much all the Gameplay vids so far have focused on them. It'll be interesting to see an ork army being played. Taking like 200 orks in an army fits their style, but not the Astartes.

    Game looks awesome, can't wait.
  • LexingtonNet · 1 year ago
Looks good! The new direction of the game isn't nearly as bothersome to me as it seems to be for others. I love the feel and play of DoW, but the fact that one could credibly lose a full Company of Marines per battle (not to mention three to four Chapters' worth of Dreadnoughts) always made me roll my eyes a bit. The scaled-down action seems far more appropriate to me, more of a 2nd Edition 40K feel.

The voice acting's a tad grating, though. The original DoW, barring a few exceptions, had some excellent voice work. Who can imagine a Librarian with any other voice now? Here's hoping that this is just a bad selection.
  • TheMightyWarHamster · 1 year ago
    hehe... SPESS MEREEEHNS!
soulstorm is worse than what i've heard so far. ;)
  • The Orange Ork · 1 year ago
That devastator seargant really sounds like a deamon prince from DOW Dark Crusade...
  • German guy · 1 year ago
I think it's good, that THQ didn't make another base-building RTS. There was enough of it in DoW and its supplements. Now they show another aspect of the Space Marines, the commando opperations. And thats good. If you want to play big battles with lots of tanks and Space Marines, then play DoW.

BTW: you all know, that we have no real clue about the story. You all know, that all we seen are only teasers, not the whole game or the possibilities you will have while playing a campaign or quest.

Don't criticise a game only by a bunch of vids. Maybe it's the best W40K computer game you've ever seen and played, maybe not.
  • naut · 1 year ago
I only have 1 question. What will the system requierments be ? Because then i know if i have to save some money or spend it on more drop pods
  • Anonymouse · 1 year ago
I'd be looking forward to this game if it looked like I could field more than a dozen models at a time. They should change the title to DoW: Patrol. I was hoping THQ and GW would be expanding DoW more along the lines of (the highly acclaimed) Company of Heroes. More interesting resource management, deformanble terrain (looks like there is some of that), more paths for unit upgrades and traits, etc.

Instead what we have been given reeks of a console conversion, or WoW squad-based bastardization. The gameplay we have seen so far looks scripted. The missions look like they are simply guiding the player along a mission path. Doesn't look like much of an explorable (or usable) world outside of what they are going to feed you along the path. Multiplayer looks like it will be some sort of squad-based MMORPG PvP. Space Marines ala Neverwinter Nights.

This may appeal to a lot of players and that's fine. But for at least some of us I think we were expecting an expansion on DoW, not a downsizing.
  • TheMightyWarHamster · 1 year ago
dude, space marines don't do the "huge army" schtick. kicking the crap out of a an ork waagh with 20 men is much more 40k for me than commanding the whole bleeding chapter with throw-away red-shirt marines like in DoW 1.
    nuff said
  • Anonymouse · 1 year ago
"20 men is much more 40k for me"

So maybe "Patrol" scenarios are more your schtick. That's fine. Ever play a 1500+ point SM battle? It's definitely more than 20 guys, and most would say more rewarding. And yes it's fun to play against an Ork Waagh!, but that usually means 150+ Orks (DoW or tabletop)...not the 20 they've shown in the trailers. The point that some of us are making is that this probably doesn't deserve to be in the "DoW" lineage. Call it "DoW Patrol" or DoW Dungeon Raid" because that's what it is shaping up to be.

The scale has changed, the gameplay has changed, but it doesn't look like change for the better. It's too bad to see them dumb it down (don't get me started on "Space Marine" and its stupid "execution moves"....yawn) to try for broader appeal. The scenery and models look great, but what about the gameplay? Running around in gothic settings, and commanding your favorite 40k units is fun at first, but if the game lacks content and depth it will fall flat.

I am hoping there is more we haven't seen that will hopefully appeal to the core of DoW players. Right now this is looking like a bargain bin title, not a $59.99 GOTY.
  • rakshasa · 1 year ago
    Abslolutely off-topic :) :

Fluffwise a company of SM should take on a whole Waagh or capture one planet, etc....

Tabletop wise, well, in 1500 point games you should either have 150+ orks and 5 SM or 30 SM + gear and 700 orks....a BIG no no either way...it's just balancing, guys....can't have someone buy 700 minis and his oponent only 30-40 pcs. can we? ;)

Ahh...the memories...i still remember the comic Damnation Crusade where 1 neophyte of the Black Templars was cutting down dozens of orks....:)))))
