There was enough of it in DoW and its supplements. Now they show another aspect of the Space Marines, the commando opperations. And thats good. If you want to play big battles with lots of tanks and Space Marines, then play DoW.

BTW: you all know, that we have no real clue about the story. You all know, that all we seen are only teasers, not the whole game or the possibilities you will have while playing a campaign or quest.

Don't criticise a game only by a bunch of vids. Maybe it's the best W40K computer game you've ever seen and played, maybe not.

Re: SNEAK PEEK: Dawn of War II

I think that the major problem is less a lack of learning from past mistakes than a desperate need to get more products to market as quickly as possible (after all, many squad-based games worked well and were very popular). GW is trying to drive sales any which way that they can, and I think that DoWII will help them do that with younger audiences.

Let's face it, DoWII is meant to appeal to the small squad player, and that generally means younger audiences (who have not yet matured to RTS playing) and older gamers who like a lot of flash and hard to kill units without the nonsense of resource expenditures. Hopefully if they hit enough youngsters those same kiddies will Google Warhammer 40K and maybe get into the hobby, further driving sales (and bankrupting their parents).

Personally, I think that this is a good thing, but my only gripe is that it should not be called Dawn of War. This is basically a glorified Kill Teams game, so it should probably have a suitably grim name, like Warhammer 40,000: Spearhead. Leave DoW titles for Strategy-oriented games and produce two different games.

Re: SNEAK PEEK: Dawn of War II

That devastator seargant really sounds like a deamon prince from DOW Dark Crusade...

Re: SNEAK PEEK: Dawn of War II

way to give into an anon troll war guys.

Re: SNEAK PEEK: Dawn of War II

We are talking about DoW2 here. There is no doubt that DoW is an RTS. DoW2 single player is not going to be RTS (per THQ's words). In a typical RTS it is possible to create additional units and structures during the course of a game. This is generally limited by a requirement to expend accumulated resources. These resources are in turn garnered by controlling special points on the map and/or possessing certain types of units and structures devoted to this purpose. More specifically, the typical game of the RTS genre features resource gathering, base building, in-game technological development and indirect control of units."

that includes the DoW method of resource management

Re: SNEAK PEEK: Dawn of War II

Those hymns were so hilarious! The new direction of the game isn't nearly as bothersome to me as it seems to be for others. I love the feel and play of DoW, but the fact that one could credibly lose a full Company of Marines per battle (not to mention three to four Chapters' worth of Dreadnoughts) always made me roll my eyes a bit. The scaled-down action seems far more appropriate to me, more of a 2nd Edition 40K feel.

The voice acting's a tad grating, though. The original DoW, barring a few exceptions, had some excellent voice work. Who can imagine a Librarian with any other voice now? Here's hoping that this is just a bad selection.

Re: SNEAK PEEK: Dawn of War II

Check out Net Hulk.

Re: SNEAK PEEK: Dawn of War II

Google 'RTS'; it'll help clear up your semantic problem.

Re: SNEAK PEEK: Dawn of War II

that's just semantics, if you show the average person gameplay footage of starcraft and gameplay footage of DoW then they would say they are in the same genre.

Re: SNEAK PEEK: Dawn of War II

I'm not much of a fan of Steve J. Blum anymore: he's literally EVERYWHERE, and doesn't do much to make himself sound different from role to role.

"he'll be fine as a sneaky bastard (he's got experience)."

That's for certain: he was the Vindicare in previous DoW titles. Were it not for the voice filters applied to his recordings for the Vindicare, he'd sound exactly like the Space Marine Scout character.

Re: SNEAK PEEK: Dawn of War II

"Instead of a quality DoW follow-up, we are given a patrol based dungeon raid-type DoW2."

While there would have been outcry about them not working on a new DoW title, Relic really should have just taken the ideas they had for DoWII and made a Space Hulk game. I'd have bought it.

Re: SNEAK PEEK: Dawn of War II

Yeah you are missing something. You're confusing RTS with RTT (Real-Time Tactics). Play some RTS games or do some reading and you will see that the RTS genre includes resources and expenditures (hey I didn't make up the term, it's common game developer knowledge...also check Wiki for the 'RTS' definition).

The fact that a game is "real time" doesn't make it RTS. Otherwise FPSs would be considered RTS since...uh they are in real-time. By your definition, anything not turn-based would be RTS...which is why you're wrong.

Re: SNEAK PEEK: Dawn of War II

"20 men is much more 40k for me"

So maybe "Patrol" scenarios are more your schtick. That's fine. Ever play a 1500+ point SM battle? It's definitely more than 20 guys, and most would say more rewarding. And yes it's fun to play against an Ork Waagh!, but that usually means 150+ Orks (DoW or tabletop)...not the 20 they've shown in the trailers. The point that some of us are making is that this probably doesn't deserve to be in the "DoW" lineage. Call it "DoW Patrol" or DoW Dungeon Raid" because that's what it is shaping up to be.

The scale has changed, the gameplay has changed, but it doesn't look like change for the better. It's too bad to see them dumb it down (don't get me started on "Space Marine" and its stupid "execution moves"....yawn) to try for broader appeal. The scenery and models look great, but what about the gameplay? Running around in gothic settings, and commanding your favorite 40k units is fun at first, but if the game lacks content and depth it will fall flat.

I am hoping there is more we haven't seen that will hopefully appeal to the core of DoW players. Right now this is looking like a bargain bin title, not a $59.99 GOTY.

Re: SNEAK PEEK: Dawn of War II

I think its fine that a space marine Army in DoW2 is only going to be about 50 marines or so. Pretty much all the Gameplay vids so far have focused on them. It'll be interesting to see an ork army being played. Taking like 200 orks in an army fits their style, but not the Astartes.

Game looks awesome, can't wait.

Re: SNEAK PEEK: Dawn of War II

More specifically, Cyrus is voiced by Steve Blum, famous for his role as Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop along with his very extensive voice acting career in many anime, cartoons, and video games.
