Bell of Lost Souls: WARMACHINE: Armies of the Iron Kingdoms: Cygnar at a Glance

  • Bobby Hostile · 1 month ago
I'm one of the Press Gang, the volunteer reps. As such, I can say that we do not encourage people to play the game by bashing any other games. My reply to, "Which is the better game." is always the same. "The one you enjoy playing." We also understand that Warmachine and Hordes are not for everyone.

Regarding the article. I think it does a good job catching the flavor of the Cygnar faction (which I play) and gives a nice concise overall view of Warmachine. My only critique is that it did not touch on Gun Mages, which are a unique and staple unit only in Cygnar. An elite unit capable of firing magical bullets of varying types, to tailor their attacks to a particular targets.

I have the same user name in the Privateer Press forums. I'd like to invite anyone interested to join our forums and if you have any questions, PM me. I'll do what I can to help you out and if I can't answer your question, I'll get someone who can.
  • Reinholt · 1 month ago
    Whoa!

This is the internet, pal. You aren't allowed to come here and say constructive things or offer to help. I call a party foul!

    Ahem.

With that said, I agree about the "one you enjoy playing". I don't think pissing matches about various games matter. It's like arguing about your favorite color...
  • No_Gaming_In_Mississippi · 1 month ago
I like green, Therefore it is the best.

Just playing. I do think people should give Warmachine a go but play what you will.
  • Dark_Templar · 1 month ago
Can I just say that the combination of this article and the post above by Bobby has convinced me to collect Warmachine. I am purely a hobbyist fluff addict and not really a big gamer, and although I have not got anybody within about 250km to game against, I will happily collect these miniatures.

As a side note. Any chance of them being released as multipart plastics or are Warmachine purely metal?
  • scadugenga · 1 month ago
They are starting to release "plastics" for some of their miniatures--particularly the heavy warjacks/myrmidons. However it's more akin to resin (at least, to my perception) than the plastic you might be familiar with w/GW. And goodonya! Warmachine and Hordes are outstanding games with really well thought out storylines behind them.

And I believe you can even play WM/H on Vassal, if you're so inclined.
  • Dark_Templar · 1 month ago
Thanks. I love doing some converting and was just curious as to whether it was a realistic hope to see non-metal minis. I might just have to learn to work with pewter a bit better.
  • Myu · 1 month ago
Green! Heretic! Blue is obviously better for no explained reason :P
  • No_Gaming_In_Mississippi · 1 month ago
My wife says purple and she is the boss so it must be so!
  • Eternum · 1 month ago
Purple? And your wife said so? Hmm... purple it is! Huzzah purple!

    (you are a wise man)
  • scadugenga · 1 month ago
    Very well said, and bravo!

Though I have to say, while I love gun mages--they're really too squishy. :)
  • bobaferret · 1 month ago
As Bobby said, Gun Mages are pretty integral to Cygnar, but to be honest, I didn't start using them a lot until Epic Caine came out. I tend to run my Cygnar melee-heavy with ranged as support.

I enjoyed the write up, very nicely done. And like Bobby, I'm a Press Ganger and can be found on the Privateer forums under this name as well.

    Jen

P.S. Love the paint scheme on the first pic in the post. Are there closeups of those minis somewhere?
  • ForsakenImp · 1 month ago
I'd agree that gunmages capture the essence of Cygnar- kinda squishy specialists with the right tools for the job. Deadly in the hands of someone who knows how to use them. Sadly, they've fallen out of favor in a lot of lists. Let's see what Mark II does for them!

BTW, Battle Boxes are the way to go. Easily enough to play the game in one awesome value box, and actually built with a beginner in mind. Finding WM reminded me of my level of excitement upon finding 40k.
  • krius666 · 1 month ago
posting to block someone from saying FIRST.

Warmachine's Models have always been interesting to me but the only people I've ever seen playing it were kinda elitist douchebags.
  • SonoftheMountain · 1 month ago
I've seen the exact same thing. A bunch of the people in my old gaming group switched from 40k to warmachine when i was in Iraq. I tried it when I came back, but it isn't really clicking with me. The main reason is that most of the WM players spend as much time insulting GW and the players who still play 40k than they do playing WM.
  • Reinholt · 1 month ago
Though, is that more a commentary on the players or on Warmachine?

I've played a lot of 40k and I'm just now getting into Warmachine. So far, my initial impression is that it's simply a better game. More dynamic, more balanced, more tactical.

My opinion, of course, but it seems superior as of yet.
  • Davidw86 · 1 month ago
Kind of...but it also lacks vehicles of any sort, which is why I like 40k, but it does have less stuff you need to paint to start up, which is a plus, especially now that they are starting up with plastic kits
  • SonoftheMountain · 1 month ago
it's mainly a critique of the players. As for the game, i really don't like the extreme emphasis placed on your Warcaster. Never really liked the idea of no matter what I do to his army if I don't kill his caster and he kills mine I lose. I know some people will say I just need to use sound tactics and for the mosrt part that might be true, but that part of the game never sat right with me.

And as for "superior" that's a highly subjective term. How do you define "superior?" If WM had the same amount of factions and units that 40k does I'm sure there would be more problems. You are already seeing that if you only play a Hordes faction and the rest of your group has been playing WM Mk2.

And I just like tanks, no tanks in Warmachine.
  • Reinholt · 1 month ago
It is highly subjective; preference in games is almost entirely subjective. All I'm saying is that I, personally, find Warmachine superior to 40k. Other people will feel otherwise, which is cool.

We all have our reasons (I, for instance, dislike tanks!). Thus, there's more than one game out there.
  • Meatshields · 1 month ago
To be fair, how different is this apparent experience from people who summarily dismiss Warmachine as an 'inferior' game, without knowing anything about it?

I played 40k for ten years. It's a fine game for a casual afternoon of 'let's hang around and roll dice', but Warmachine is just a plain superior game in the factors that lead to a result. Every turn matters, each inch of game board matters.

Often for 40K, it comes down to 'my army list beats your army list' without any dice being rolled. In Warmachine, bad matchups exist, but it's quite possible for the result to be in either direction due to crafty tactics.

Really, the game just plays better. Because the player is more involved. You don't just roll dice and roll armies at each other, you have to outplay your opponent with your own wits.
  • No_Gaming_In_Mississippi · 1 month ago
I'm right there with you, plus there custoner service is so much better than GW's it's silly.
  • BiG_Weasel · 1 month ago
Gotta call you on that one. Privateer Press is amazing, and they've even released their Mk II rules for FREE on their site (granted, in a non-photography version). Customer service aside, they're customer friendly in terms of entry into the game. Rules are $25, battle box, $50. Can't start playing 40k out of the AOBR box, you'll need to at least buy some more minis.

Coming from a 2nd edition 40k and Battletech background, I've found lots to love about Warmachine's rules.
  • No_Gaming_In_Mississippi · 1 month ago
No,No,Noooo. I was saying that Privateer Press has good custoner service and that GW has no service at all. I love Privateer and I've only been playing a few weeks
  • Myu · 1 month ago
"it comes down to 'my army list beats your army list' without any dice being rolled. "

Not for me. I've been playing for a number of years too and there have been plenty of games where it looked like I was going to lose, but I thought through my options and won.
  • krius666 · 1 month ago
To me people that play the game reflect what the game is to me. I play magic because I like the players who play. Casual and nice. I hate Yu-Gi-Oh because the players are tweens or mouth breathers. The same concept goes for Warham and WarMech. I've had a few people be absolutely terrible to me while playing Warhammer but no where NEAR as bad as it is to sit and listen to a group of guys rag on me while they're supposed to be "teaching" me how to play WM about how it's a "far superior game in every way". This isn't just limited to my LGS but every LGS within 100 miles of my house. Some of the models are hits and misses for me and NO TANKS. I just find 40k more fun to model, play, and the atmosphere in the GW stores and LGS are more calm and fun. My opinion. Plus even in the WM rule book it calls people pansies and idiots, where's the gaming spirit in that?! I'm being a bit generalist on the players and I'm sure there are lots of people who do not fit this description. I've just never seen one yet.
  • Myu · 1 month ago
I know what you mean. Whatever the rules, if the people are nasty, the game is no fun. And having fun is why we play.

One example of where I think the rules are good, but the people nasty is the online DOW1 community. Not all, but most of them. I got bored playing on the highest difficulty, but then couldn't play online since I wasn't good enough. It's no fun if no one will play with you because you don't have a win ratio of more then 60%. And EVERYONE online seems to have that much. How? No idea.

I can't learn if I can't play the game. Alternatively, I don't want to learn if there's no one nice to play against.
  • stormklaw · 1 month ago
I have to disagree with the statment, "Often for 40K, it comes down to 'my army list beats your army list' without any dice being rolled." I'm one of those few players in 40K who plays standard troops and HQ with nothing too special. No special characters, LR's, etc. Just troopers and some basic tank choices. I've never come up against a list I couldn't beat at least after a couple of tries. I stayed with the game because I believe it can be won based on tactics and not just by what new "meta"list your taking.
  • relasine · 1 month ago
A nice summation of Cygnar's strengths and weaknesses, Ben. Keep it up!
  • evilPidge · 1 month ago
I'd really like to see a nice quality 40k post like this. I don't realty care for Warmachine or WHFB or LotR. I come to BoLS for the 40K posts, but lately it seems more like, "Today on Coffee Talk, Chaos Daemons: What do YOU think? Talk amongst yourselves."

    Just makes me sad.
  • Dark_Templar · 1 month ago
I see where you are coming from, but maybe you should put together something like that and submit it for posting? I have emailed bigred about doing an article for them and am just in the process of putting together a skeleton of what I want and where I want to go with it.

    Just a thought.
  • evilPidge · 1 month ago
What and put my money where my mouth is? but this is the interwebs!
  • Dark_Templar · 1 month ago
I didn't mean it in a negative way, nor was I having a go at you for making a request based on personal preference. I just thought it would be interesting to see some more people posting articles on here, especially if you know exactly what you would like to read as a visitor.

But you are correct, it was silly of me to think people on the interweb would actually do something other than complain, I mean, that is a mandatory requirement in the terms and conditions right?
  • evilPidge · 1 month ago
I didn't take it in a negative way. I was making the exact same point you just made. Do something other than complain?! Weird!

I was just making fun of myself.
  • faultie · 1 month ago
Good summary, and fantastic paint jobs on most of those. I'm just a smidge jealous.
  • TAUfanatic · 1 month ago
I've got to say its all about khador (if I spelled it right)
their warjacks look cool, are durable, and deal a lot of damage
plus they remind me of the russians and I have a strange fasinaction with the russians
(I don't even play the game I'm just interested in the warjacks since they look so awesome)
  • Kraggi · 1 month ago
The Khador are the first faction that got me into Playing Warmachine. I also have the Cryx and Trollbloods.

With reference to WM players hating 40k... nearly everyone who plays WM that I know also plays 40k, and says (like me) that it is still a very good game.

I just find that in the space of 45 mins a Warmachine or Hords game goes faster and is more balanced, whereas in 40K some armies just dont work well at.

For instance Combat Patrol is the easiest way to get a quick game of 40k, but too many armies just dont play very well at that level. So at the moment for me either WM or Hordes is good for a quick pickup game, whereas when I play a larger game it tends to be 40k.
  • BiG_Weasel · 1 month ago
Also, we don't have to wait around for new Codexes all the time. When WM releases a new version, EVERY army gets a simultaneous updating.
  • Gregory · 1 month ago
Those are some pretty cool models.

I really like that guy on horseback in the last picture. He's awesome.
  • deuce1984 · 1 month ago
It is funny to me that people like the warjack models. I am personally not a fan and it is one the biggest deterrents keeping me from even looking twice at WM. That and I don't know anyone that plays it.
  • Faolain · 1 month ago
Same here. I've said it before, but I wanted to get into Warmachine when a friend of mine did. I looked at all the armies and nothing bit me. The models are just uninspired.
  • no_gaming_in_Mississippi · 1 month ago
God I love War Machine. I just got off their forum where I registered today. I posted a question in their Q & A area and it was answered in about five or six minutes. I can't say they'll always be like that, but their customer service really impressed me. Getting a question answered in a few minutes vs. getting a question answered in MAYBE six months or a year or waiting ten plus years for a new codex is ridiculous. GW could learn a thing or two from Privateer Press. I'm not saying that I hate Games Workshiop, just their total lack of customer service and their ridiculous price gouging. If they don't turn it around soon, they'll lose more than just me as a customer. Here's hoping some of the Games Workshop trolls will read this post and take it to heart.
  • VonKoeder · 1 month ago
I don't want to see GW overtaken, they have never provided good service and to be honest I have given up that they will. I wish the company would shoot for long term growth and take hints from upstarts like this. I have no issue with hearing from other games and in fact enjoy it to see the comparison. One guy posted towards the beginning that WM players just sit around and talk smack about GW. Its sad that there are groups of people that are former GW enthusiasts that LEFT the GW to support another company. I hope the trend doesn't continue and even more so that these people can be won back over if not to play once again to at least say the customer service and support has gotten better.

As for WM. my group continues to try to demo it for me - I will get to see it soon.

Nice summaration. I don't play WM and don't feel like it either.

Also, Cyngar's fluff makes them sound like the Iron kingdom's Ultrasmurfs, if you know what I mean.
  • meatshields · 1 month ago
It's really more sophisticated than that. Cygnar is the 'modernizing, more liberal' nation, which is struggling to come to grips that their economic prosperity and tolerance doesn't mean people like them. The Ultrasmurfs really are just do-gooders.

Likewise, they aren't exactly good guys either. They may be better than most, but they've put their citizens who belong to a hostile religion in internment camps, and taken land from native trollkin after breaking promises. They've likewise had strings of harsh kings and failed to back up their closest ally from being conquered by Khadoran expansionism.
  • Spun · 1 month ago
Who painted these? Can we get a tutorial on it? They're superb. I didn't even read the article yet.

So I'ma go do that too.
  • gridespider · 1 month ago
I'm a die hard GW player but I am open to other games, I own four different warjacks all from different factions. I use them in epic games as titans when I play my brother in friendly games. and I use them as dreadnoughts as well, I visited the WM website and downloaded the rule book and going to try them out. I think ill be the judge of whether its better than GW or not..
  • Bobby Hostile · 1 month ago
WM plays differently than 40K or WHFB. I don't think you can really compare them side by side because of that. Aesthetics and such are more to taste and not subjective to being stated as facts. Like I said, if you like it. it's a good game.

Privateer is introducing plastics into their range of miniatures and right now it's limited to some heavy warjacks and medium base sized infantry aka "Heavy Infantry" by most players.

For me, the draw is the melding of science and magic. In most games, it seems that they are opposing "sciences", whereas WM and Hordes melds them into a unique and flavorful science. Also, right now is a good time to get into the game. Privateer has posted the full rules for the 2nd edition aka Prime MK II, along with all that stats for the WM armies. The companion game, Hordes, will start a Field Test in the middle of this month. Privateer is going to release the rough draft (only slightly rough) of the Hordes rules to their players and give them 30 days to submit any feedback for changes they'd like to see or rules inconsistency. Then the field test closes, Privateer finalizes any changes and the books go to print.
  • Dark_Templar · 1 month ago
Hrm, when was the last time GW did any rules testing with the general public?
  • No_Gaming_In_Mississippi · 1 month ago
I was alot like you a few weeks ago.......
  • anonymouse · 1 month ago
I've watched WM before and the thing that always gets me is the lack of emphasis on terrain, and the flexibility in movement that vehicles bring seemed to be missing. It aways looked like some dressed up Napoleonic miniatures game. Line your guys up, and march forward. Granted the different units had other abilities. Not a bash, but just an observation of the way it was played.
  • fiend · 1 month ago
Players that have a bit more experience will use terrain and movement with a lot more subtlety. Usually with the player with the greatest ability to ignore terrain penalties working to take the fight into the terrain, and the other doing their best to avoid it.

And, in most games, you'll have the stage where each player tries to outmanouver their opponent, looking to make the first charge and to not be the recipient of the first charge.

I personally tend to put down between 4-6 pieces of scenery in between the two deployment zones, and the use of those has been key to who wins in most games.
  • BiG_Weasel · 1 month ago
That's really no different that WFB, honestly. It *is* fantasy, after all. There are instances when cover is used effectively, mostly with models screening and dropping smoke, etc.
  • James diGriz · 1 month ago
Bell of Lost souls, if you start covering both 40k and Warmachine I may have to give you money or something.

On a side note... one of my favorite things about Warmachine/Hordes is the fact that the Warcaster is such a critical part of the army. Just changing them can change the way your entire force plays... Sigh not enough time to paint, work, go to school and actually play... :(
  • fiend · 1 month ago
Aye. One of my group plays most games with the same handful of beasts and solos, but in changing the warlock very much changes the style with which those handful play.
  • BiG_Weasel · 1 month ago
Exactly- each of the original Cynar warcasters plays differently. Stryker's the support guy- bufffing units, Haley's the disruption/crowd control caster, and Caine's the show off shooty guy.
  • Grant McMasters · 1 month ago
Great write up! Having played, and still playing, both 40k and Warmachine I have to say I enjoy both games for the different tactical elements that each one brings to the table.
  • Azrael88 · 1 month ago
I've been playing 40K since 2nd ED. Unfortunately, it got worse from ED to ED, now in my humble opinion it is only extreme cool fluff and universe that I stick to it. 40K used to be a game of control, now I hardly can control my own troops with all those random stuff.
WM/H are still games about tactics, combinations and proper/improper decisions. It's more dynamic; that's why after 12 or so years of 40k playing I dropped it in favour of WM/H.
Just try it. If you don't like it, that's OK.

I really don't like the way WM plays @ all. Which is a shame really, as the models are in general, spectacular! I'm still occasionally tempted to buy & paint some WM minis despite having sold 2 separate (albeit small) armies of them back when I tried to convince myself that I really liked the game.

Ive been playing GW games for a decade now. 40k obviously due to having most players and support from gw wud b the game ive played most. I actually find my games of warmachine are a breath of fresh air every now and then. I play cygnar and am looking at the new retribution stuff.
i thought the article was quite good at surmising the various strengths of cygnar. i have to agree that cygnar shooting does indeed rock but u really cant overlook things like the basic ironclad for melee. hes a rock solid option able to rip almost anything apart give him some focus and hes just mean. (nemo can give him 5 focus O_o)

i really dont understand y people always look for somet to smack talk about. warmachine and 40k play nothing like each other. and as far as warmachine players bashing gw goes...all teh guys taht dominate the wm tournie scene WORK for GW. last i recall the design team play wm a hell of a lot ;p
  • ForsakenImp · 1 month ago
I have to say I'm glad to see this. as a 40k/Fantasy player with a 1000 point (before the change) cygnar army, I think you nailed cygnar. The only other thing I would mention is cygnar is the specialists faction. Want your army to do X insanely well? Cygnar has the build for you. Cryx is sneaky, khador survives and beats down, and Menoth swarms, and burns, but cygnar has an elite troop just waiting to counter them. It will take a bit to get used to cygnar, but it's worth it.

Warmachine is build different from 40k. Read Page 5 of a WM book to see the difference. In 40k, to be balanced all armies need equally powerful units. WM says that as long as each army can do equally insane things, everything is all good. They let every army be broken rather than balance everything, and it meets a fairly nice equilibrium.

Also, check out Mark II. The new rules and cards (stats and points costs) have been released in PDF form on the website. Great chance to find someone with working knowledge of the game and proxy a few games! Much quicker and usually with a more epic feel, you loose the feel of entire armies clashing and of massive blasts and craters. You feel the epicness in a personal way, with a throw of a 'jack or a crazy shot across the table.

If you're in amherst, look up BrotherSwas on bolter and chainsword or track me down here. I'll gladly give demo games.
  • Bryan · 1 month ago
I've gotten into Warmachine recently too. With regard to the comments re: unpleasant people playing warmachine in your area, that's a pretty standard complaint that can be leveled against all wargames everywhere.

I like how the game is centered around different combos and interactions, similar to the Magic card game; whereas there appears to be an unspoken code in 40k that using abusive combos and interactions is dirty.

I've collected 40k and played for about 15 years, and my enthusiasm for the game is mostly gone now. For whatever reason, Warmachine has gotten me back into mini gaming.
  • Dark_Templar · 1 month ago
Going by the 4 or more 40k forums I have scoured, the abusive combos and interactions thing is definitely not "unspoken", it is probably the biggest thing people bitch about.
  • meatshields · 1 month ago
That's the point of the game though. EVERYONE has amazing potential. It's not one faction, or whatnot, but every faction and indeed, each Warcaster has incredible powers that can win the game if applied correctly to the situation.
  • Dark_Templar · 1 month ago
I hate you all. I have tried so hard to ignore all of the Privateer Press stuff and will therefore have to try and outwit myself in a game of WM whilst collecting their minis.

Thanks all. I am about to be financially ruined due to being sucked into this new world. ;)

Being a model builder and painter first , and a gamer second , I'm not very familiar with WM , however , from what I've seen of the models , I like . Kudos to whoever built and painted the above examples . My question , in a friendly game of 40k , could some of these models be used ? Some of the special characters look like they could be fine subs as a commissar , or even an inquisitors retinue , or as scouts . Varriety is the spice of life .

Played 40k from the begining of Rogue Trader, and Warmachine from its begining. In my honest opinion neither game is better than the other, they are just too different and have completely different feels to them. I love them both. Every game has its elitist dueschbags and it seems to me to be a regional thing, in my FLGS the local Deuschbags are "flames of war" fatbeards. So yeah I can sympathize :)

Any chance of a palette of general colors used? Those are some fantastic paint jobs and I'm really interested in ripping off the bronze-gold used on the Thunderhead in particular.
