It's download exclusive? I thought it'd be in stores, like the other GW games...
This is not the best marketing tactic...
Not to mention I completely forgot about this game.

It will be coming out in stores, but not for a couple of months, the direct download is for people who want it now. I believe it will be available on Steam in September.
fuego_llama

Ahh, just the news I was looking for! Steam or retail is pretty much a must IMO, most download services just aren't worth it (especially when you pay to download it once, and that's it).
Mike X

Well that's good to hear. I hate Steam though, there's nothing worse than DRM.
Blaznazn
But I really don't mind steam DRM because it's unobtrusive, and I've never had it interfere with my play. It's that type of DRM that actually works, but you never see, that is the successful kind.
Mike X
I dislike DRM in general, and although Steam isn't directly obtrusive, it still uses RAM and hard drive space.
Blaznazn
True, but computers/laptops are getting enough ram and HD space that I honestly don't see this as a problem. I mean, you can get a 1TB HD for $100 and 4GB of RAM for $50.
Mike X

This is true, but it's just upsetting that they require you to install third-party spyware in the first place.

Word. Don't accept Steam's limitations and don't even listen to its justifications.

I boycott all DRM games, whether it's Steam or another company.

Parts of modern DRM will be questioned in UK/EU courts soon as they breach UK/EU laws under ownership terms.
Apparently the concerned law states that once you buy the "product" it is yours to do with as you please including resale/trade with its original licence code and that you may make a solo backup copy.
Various games at the moment (I believe Fear 2 is one) have a 1 use licence code which prevents "trade-ins" or handing the game over to a friend or similar.
Not sure if any of this affects the US though as I dont know your regs on the subject.

As much as I've been waiting for this game, I must give it a pass since it uses SecuROM for DRM. If the Steam version doesn't contain SecuROM, I might get that one. Otherwise, I refuse to support them.

I must have it!
But I get the feeling it's been released at this price for download just for people like me who will pay extra to have it earlier than everyone else.
Maine
Retail price will probably be the same too, and the Steam release in September. Download versions are usually same price as retail at launch.
It's worth it. Just spent a couple hours playing it, and I imagine I sounded like my father and mother watching the Packers play when I was younger (I never really got into [American] football much myself). My wife gave me some strange looks.
I've been playing mostly the Classic play style, which is true LRB 5.0 rules. My BB league from work which fell apart after our league commisioner went to another company, has reformed on it.
It also features hot seat mode, so I'll be teaching a friend how to play.

Meh.... another trailer in a years long tradition of not showing actual game play.
I'll wait until I can see polished game play videos.
dan
there are videos of gameplay
BuFFo
No there aren't. Those are videos of staged scripts with varied camera angles. I see no game play videos at all.
But thats what people want, flash over substance. People tend to not care if the engine doesn't work as long as the paint is nice when it comes to video games.
But maybe I am wrong. I want to know how a game actually looks when its running on my computer instead of a staged demo. Thats just me.
steesefactor
Unfortunately, the gameplay isn't going to look very exciting. It's a faithful recreation of the boardgame, so it's a bunch of guys standing around on grid.
When this game was originally announced, I figured it'd be an xbox arcade release, as it's a pretty niche game.
Also, there's a fairly steep learning curve if you aren't familiar with board game rules, which may put off a lot of new players.
This seems like a better fit for the DS and PSP, and I believe those versions will come out in September as well.
BuFFo
You see? This is EXACTLY what I am talking about.
Some of the people on here foaming at the mouth "grrr arg I gotta has this!" just see the premade scripted videos and assume the game is going to be some action game, but will buy the game and go 'wtf is this? this is a strategy game!?!?"
I know about Blood Bowl, and even I didn't know it was going to be a turn based game. Its called sly marketing, and everyone does it.
Skragger

Look up the trailer on Youtube.. there's an extended one with gameplay footage. I played the beta and its very very impressive looking. yes it's not high-def total blow your mind top-o-the-line graphics, but thats not whats important in a game anyhow!
Maine
There is a real time mode, it's pretty fun too. It's like a cross between Blood Bowl and the classic Pigskin 621 AD arcade game. It is much faster (about 10 minutes for a game), plays differently enough but is still somewhat Blood Bowl in feel.
BuFFo

I agree. After being in the beta I'd say this is a game that is best tried before you buy.
Kilcin

After being in the beta, it's a must buy if you enjoy playing Blood Bowl on the table top. The single player is better then I imagined and multiplayer is always enjoyable, as long as your opponent is not a jerk.
Ssyrie
That depends on which version of the rules you use. Most people I know use the last commercial version of the game where there weren't so many ways to get a turnover during your turn. That way it made strategy more important than hoping you don't blow a block at the beginning of your turn.
Legionary

Ridiculously overpriced. There's just no way that I'm paying that amount. And it's selling for £40, which means it's cheaper for Americans to buy it.
mordiano

faultie

Hold on...if you *download* it, there is a different price depending on where you are?
Mike X
It's selling for $50 in America. Video games here are typically $30-60, depending on newness, popularity, and edition.
And come on... you play GW games and you're complaining about the cost of a video game?! I would've thought you'd be used to things being overpriced by now.
Andrew
No dark elves or undead....come on, they had both those teams in Chaos League and sudden death(The developer had an earlier game and an expansion that were probably based on bloodbowl, but was not turn based).
Obviously GW has a right to protect their property and i'm not going to say they ruined the game, but no dark elves....they were pretty popular.
And i know there hasn't been mixed race teams since 2nd ed, but that was my favorite version. With out mixed races how can you play the allstar game at the end of the season?
elotsip

Is there any idea when it will be out for xbox?
steesefactor

September. Though I worry about how much it'll sell if they price it at $60.
Agatheron

I downloaded it and have played it on single-player turn-based for a short-term league to get a sense of the mechanics. It plays just like the tabletop, but perhaps a bit better as it automatically maps out "best path" options for moving players across the field.
The website stuff shows both cinematics, as well as actual gameplay. They're hard to tell apart, actually... The game looks great, and it is very fun to play.
The game also includes a "blitz" mode where one can play more video-game style. I've not tried it yet, as I am much more partial to the turn-based game.
As for what teams it is lacking, I'm sure there is always room for expansion. The mechanics for the game are solid... We will see additional teams as soon as their graphic development catches up.

Could you please link me to the actual game play? The only videos I can see are the crappy ones with cheerleaders for 3 minutes and scripted action. I don't see any turn based game play at all.

well since the trailer ends before showing any real gameplay- but gee the cutscene intros look nice- I'll wait for a review since that just strikes me as fishy. If the trailer had shown me some game mechanics like crazy tackles, some passing or touchdowns being scored I would be a little more excited. But the trailer ended with a kickoff, and no real gameplay. I'm too lazy to dig thru the website looking for something that really should be in the primary trailer. If the game does feature bone crunching tackles you would think that would be a great selling point- put it in the trailer! And if Steam is in any way involved- forget it. That lousy program will NEVER get back on any of my machines. I had to reformat my main computer to get rid of it! I swear the devil himself coded that program.....damn resource hog.....
The teaser video, which has been out for ages, has the action you want. After the beginning with the wood elves vs orcs, you get treated to watching in-game action. Here's the teaser trailer plus customizing your team. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6Nu3MyaIJg
Currently you don't need Steam to download the game. I would imagine that Dark Elves and the Undead will be in the first expansion, if there is one. The reason I believe this is because they have skins for both amongst their files.

Well, I made the purchase but I am having a devil of a time downloading it. It links to a site in France that initially downloads pretty quick, but 5 minutes into it, comes to a screeching halt. After an hour of not being able to download the first BIN file (size 547MB) I'm serously considering cancelling the order.

I bought it, if you like the board game you should like this. There are 2 modes classic mode, useing LRB 5.0 rules. and Blitz mode, that can be played in RTS or TB and has add rules. The Online is good you can Start your own league online and play with friends all over the world. The public league kind of sucks because there is no Matching system, you have to sit in the chat room asking people if they want to play. "Orc Team 1050 Lookin for a Game", heh
Pros:If you are a big fan of blood bowl buy it cause it is very true to the board game. Cons:, The DRM realy sucks, and you only have 24 days to download it then the link goes dead. Limited activations. Over priced for what seems like a simple game.
Pukeface

The link goes dead after 24 days. Thats sucks, but at least we can add the serial to steam in september, which takes care of that (unless you really hate steam).
Btw, i also bought the game and love it. Shame they didn't do all the races, but they claim to be adding more stuff as downloadable content, starting with adding Undead and Dark Elves.
Froglok

Cyanide said the serial will not work with steam. If steam didnt get any money from your purchase they are not going to let you download it for free, So back up your download file on CD

Now a little over 2 hours into this mess and still haven't been able to download the first BIN file, let alone all three. I've had to stop and restart the download at least 50 times and the farthest I've managed to get is 200MB.
