Bell of Lost Souls: WFB NEWS: The Skaven are Upon Us!

  • Myu · 1 month ago
I know I've seen them before, but those are nice models. Pity the storm vermin cost as much as a land raider...

Can't wait to get my Skaven army book!

Update: got the book, and I am one happy camper. Haven't read the rules yet, but I love the fluff sections - looks like the author read Skavenslayer ^_^

Nice Halo vehicle, but it looks more Khorne than Nurgle to me with all those sharp edges.

Deathmaster Snitch = hope for a good Ragnar Blackmane & Lemartes models. He is such a sweet model. Plus, IIrc, a real beast in the game.

I have my eye out for the Stormvermin severed heads, they look sweet.

Hopefully they will be fun to play with and against.

I have seen some very cheap Skaven on ebay and not just the old but also the brand new. Worth checking out for those so inclined....

and here come the flood of core stone throwers.... that everything the template touches is hit...

a dark day for rank and file armies...

They're pretty awful. I've gotten in a few games against those little things, and they haven't done much but they have been very scary, so I suspect they will be really bad at some point. And cheap for what they do, too.
  • james2191 · 1 month ago
awful in what way? awful good, or awful bad? From just a glance at the rules, boy do those poisoned wind mortars look painfully good.
  • mcnutter · 1 month ago
A 500 lb rock landing in a tightly packed unit could be considered a bad thing for rank and file troops, yes
Possibly able to put a dampener on the day......

Ive planned my list! Its all the cool stuff I like.

Battalion box is such a steal, you get the rat ogres for free and the plague monks for mostly free!
  • smurfhater · 1 month ago
Its the old one with new rats in stead of old ones but more expensive
  • kaptinscuzgob · 1 month ago
Rat Ogres are still free :P

Don't know about your store, but my FLGS didn't need GW to cause them to be rat infested ;-)

    Hey guys,

Just shelled out for a pile of new Skaven models including 2 boxes of Clanrates (I just love these models for some reason, very characterful). Question: I'm a serious noob at WFB, so I'm wondering if there's any reason why a person would take Skavenslaves instead of Clanrats? Is it to simply flesh out a list if you have extra points, or are they a strong tactical choice?

I can think of several reasons to use them. First, sheer numbers. Skaven are weak, but they can't be bested in numbers on the field. Numbers can swing a lot of battles. Use the slaves to shield your clanrats, storm vermin, or plague monks. Let them take the shooting damage and the charge. When they flee, and they will, they don't run away. They go crazy and then just die. In death they can inflict damage. On your turn, charge the now diminished unit and have at them. They are also good for flanking or locking up units. They add a massive numbers advantage, so don't underestimate that.

You can also slam them right in front of your opponent, leaving him the option to either charge, win and be in a position to be ganged upon by several of your supporting units; or not charge and have that giant annoyance right up his face. You'd be surprised at how many people take the bait.

Put them either in front of your army and let them be charged (and then explode on your opponents) and then charge in with better units. You can also put them on the flanks so your opponent can't outflank your better units. Lastly, keep a unit near the doomwheel so they soak up the early game warp lightnings which invariably hit your units (although I find units of giant rats perform this function better).

If you give them slings, the whole unit can fire at large targets. Ive seen skavenslaves take down giants just because of the sheer amount of shots they can put out against large targets.

Slaves are useful when used properly. Don't give them ANYTHING! No leader, no spears, no shields... okay, maaaaybe a musician, but only if you're feeling less than frugal. Anyhow, I just played against a mounted Mortals of Chaos list and the slaves were beautiful blockers. They didn't do a single wound in combat, but when they exploded they took out two units of warhounds and almost a unit of Marauder Horsemen. Plus, they let the Knights break through in HIS turn so that they all got jumped by two or more units. Which, depending on your math, equals some dead damned knights.

Also, never underestimate your leadership. My clanrats were sitting at Ld 10 for most of the game, thanks to strategic placement of my general.

just played against skaven, really good stegadons don't like getting shot at
